2020 Bernard Baudry Chinon Le Clos Guillot
Vintage: 2020
Region: Loire
Color/Type: Red
Size: 750 ML
Tasting Notes:
VM 91-93 (8/2022): Hailing from the limestone-clay slopes on the outskirts of Chinon town, home to other famous vineyards like Clos de l'Olive and Chêne Vert, Le Clos Guillot 2020 offers a cloud of Cabernet Franc fruit with fine refreshing acidity. Savory, silken and seductive, the wine is flooded with a stream of acidity. It is a calm wine with a mass of chalky tannins that coat the palate reassuringly. The finish is long, quiet and scented with dark raspberries and spice. There is a minor complaint of a touch of dryness at the very end of this wine. Rebecca Gibb.

| WA 90+ (8/2021): The 2015 Chinon La Croix Boissée is intense and floral on the nose, showing ripe, intense and elegant fruit as well as some untamed or even animal flavors that you either accept or don’t. Silky, smooth and elegant on the palate, this is a generous, well-concentrated and structured Cabernet Franc with good freshness, tightly woven and crunchy tannins and a close-meshed limestone structure. The wine has both a certain rustic character as well as a good freshness and finesse. I’d cellar it for at least 10 or 15 years. |

| VM 96 (10/2021): The ripeness of the 2018 vintage gives an almost Syrah/Viognier character to the Chinon La Croix Boissee, which offers sweet black fruit and a creamy apricot note. Sumptuous yet never ever opulent, it's almost as if the wine's just done a yoga class. Plentiful tannins give the inside of your cheeks a chalky rub, while there's surprising freshness considering the ripeness, leading to a lengthy finish. This is a baby that will turn out to be a great adult. Rebecca Gibb. |

| WA 89+ (8/2021): The 2015 Chinon Le Clos Guillot is terribly reductive at the moment and shows lots of volatile and animalic (Brettanomyces) scents on the nose, which also reveals dark, ripe fruit aromas and a nice flintiness. The 2015 is pure and fresh on the palate, silky textured and provided with fine and refreshing if not crisp tannins. However, the 2015 is a bit austere right now and quite astringent and should be allowed to breathe a lot! |

| VM 92 (7/2020): Same aging and vinification as the 2017, but this is even fruiter, with more oak influence. More floral than savory, and purple in all ways: purple color, purple flowers, purple fruit. In the mouth, there’s black cherry and plum and big, wild acidity, almost white-wine-like acidity, and a cool, fresh finish. Should be interesting to see how this has developed in a year or two. (Drink between 2021-2046). Jason Wilson. |

| VM 95-97 (10/2021): Just outside the village, Clos Guillot sits on a slope on clay over limestone. The 2019 Chinon is a serious barrel sample that melts in your mouth with its silken texture. No crushing, very little remontage and a year in used barrels all lend a very gentle touch. The tannins build gradually, coating the mouth with the finest of chalky textures. Excellent acidity keeps things fresh through the finish. Rebecca Gibb. |

| VM 93 (10/2021): Sourced from a single vineyard located at the bottom of Chinon's slope on alluvial/clay soils, the 2019 Chinon Les Grézeaux is currently a bit shy in terms of revealing its fruit flavors. It’s also a hint reductive with its smoky bacon characters, but that's unimportant. What matters is the core of fruit and excellent focus. It's very relaxed and fluid with mouthwatering acidity. The tannins are more serious than the front and midpalate would have suggested and betray a little grittiness. Aged 15 months in cement, this could be opened in one to two years, but the concentration and structure offer drinking over a decade. (Drink between 2022-2030). Rebecca Gibb. |

$225 |

| |
| VM 92 (10/2023): The 2020 Bonnes Blanches is a dry and vibrant Chenin Blanc. It's the latest parcel to be harvested as it is north-facing and on schist, which degrades to clay so the soils are cooler, creating a long ripening process. Offering up masses of concentration, perhaps a result of the nearly 40-year-old vines and the low yields, as well as a powerful schist-derived finish. Structure and firmness are the keys to this wine in youth. There are delicate, tangy apple flavors, Sicilian lemons and white flowers marrying with subtle almond pastry-like characters following 13 months on lees in demi-muids. Balanced and settled wine, ready for its life ahead. (Drink between 2024-2034). Rebecca Gibb. |

Anjou Roueres |
$125 |

|
| |
| VM 92 (10/2023): The 2020 Rouères is a sweet wine but not unctuous; it has a sense of freshness and a bitter twist, providing a clean, long finish despite its 150-odd g/L of residual sugar. It is almost tart and offers an herbal, aperitif-like character, combining celery, marmalade, toffee and smoke notes. It's already approachable, but its structural tension and sweetness point to longevity if you wait. (10% alcohol). Quite frankly, it's a triumph this was even made after rains wiped Les Quarts parcel out. It might not be typical Quarts de Chaume - neither as rich nor luscious - hence why they've decided to label it as a Coteaux du Layon even though they could legally have still called it Quarts de Chaume, displaying the integrity of this producer. (Drink between 2023-2043). Rebecca Gibb. |

| Decanter 92 (3/2024): Citric notes with a touch of honey. Lean, mineral and precise, reflecting this cooler vintage, with a long, vibrant and quite an austere finish, but clear potential to age. Comes from four small, closely grouped parcels totalling 1.85ha that are just to the northwest of the village of Savennières on the plateau. Planted in 1988, the vines are on sandy loam soils over schist. Harvest was on 30 September with a yield of just 7hl/ha due to frost damage. Vinified and aged for 14 months in barriques (228 litre) with complete malolactic fermentation and bottled in November 2022. (Drink between 2024-2045) |

| VM 91 (7/2024): The 2020 Savennières Ruchères is ripe yet delicately scented with aromas of pineapple and almond meal. There's purity and focus to this mid-weight wine, but it remains round. Lick-your-lips salinity and a line of acidity run through like a tight thread, keeping the wine persistent and long. A hint of warmth on the finish just knocks its balance. (Drink between 2025-2031). | |
| VM 96 (8/2025): All in all, the 2020 La Rougerie is seamless and expansive with a high level of elegance. Sweet, nutty oak makes the first impression before pure cassis and black cherry notes shine through. This possesses a whole lot of intrigue in its infancy but has a long way to go before it fully reveals itself. That said, the 2020 has class, sophistication, excellent handling and a tram-like line of acidity and chalkiness that allows it to persist. I'd love to see this up against some St-Émilions. Buy it and embarrass your nerdy friend in a blind tasting. (Drink between 2027-2042). Rebecca Gibb. |

| VM 88 (7/2024): An acid-lovers' wine, the 2022 Saumur Blanc Les Chapaudaises is taut, chiseled and unyielding. There's real essence, power and tension within its textured, structured core. Taut and restrained, it is far from open and generous, but it evokes a purity and transparency that's rare. Flavor-wise, it sits on the citrus side of things with the first traces of almond meal starting to creep in, but it's still young and firm. There’s a decade of evolution ahead. WA 94 (1/2021): A tensile, racy wine—two-thirds from Pernand-Vergelesses, one-third from Aloxe-Corton—the 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with scents of white flowers, orange oil, buttery pastry and nutmeg. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, it's chiseled and saline, with impressive cut and grip. BH 91-93 (6/2020): (the proportions have changed again and in 2018 are in a 35/65% proportion from Les Languettes in Aloxe and En Charlemagne in Pernand.) A restrained, ultra-fresh and distinctly floral nose reflects notes of various white orchard fruit aromas, lemon zest and discreet wood toast. There is outstanding volume to the rich and succulent broad-shouldered flavors that possess focused power on the beautifully long and sappy mineral-infused finish that is shaped by citrus-tinged acidity. This isn't quite as structured as the Chevalier, but it too is promising. Drink 2028+. |
