Quite austere, but more vibrant than the 2020, with a long finish, this exhibits a return to the classic, dry wines of the Loire before the effects of climate change became apparent. Very serious early frosts between 6-8 April caused the domaine to lose 70% of its crop. Overall, the year was cooler than other recent vintages with selective picking on 17, 24 and 25 September, and a yield of only 7hl/ha. Vinified and aged in a mix of wooden casks, demi-muids and barriques averaging five years old for 21 months, followed by a further 12 months in stainless steel. Bottled early June 2023. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, it's chiseled and saline, with impressive cut and grip.
BH 91-93 (6/2020): (the proportions have changed again and in 2018 are in a 35/65% proportion from Les Languettes in Aloxe and En Charlemagne in Pernand.) A restrained, ultra-fresh and distinctly floral nose reflects notes of various white orchard fruit aromas, lemon zest and discreet wood toast. There is outstanding volume to the rich and succulent broad-shouldered flavors that possess focused power on the beautifully long and sappy mineral-infused finish that is shaped by citrus-tinged acidity. This isn't quite as structured as the Chevalier, but it too is promising. Drink 2028+. |
