2004 Cavallotto Barolo Bricco Boschis
Vintage: 2004
Region: Italy
Color/Type: Red
Size: 12x750ML
ETA 90-120 Days; No cancellations or returns. This item may be subject to tariffs.
Tasting Notes:
VM 93 (10/2008): The 2004 Barolo Bricco Boschis tastes just like it did from barrel, which is to say sweet, layered and totally irresistible. The ripe red fruit is incredibly primary, and this wine is years away from offering its finest drinking, but it is already very impressive at this stage. This is an especially refined, elegant vintage for this wine, and I can only say that I await the Riservas with eager anticipation. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.

| JD 90 (5/2024): The 2020 Barbera D’Alba Vigna Cuculo is a crowd pleaser of a wine, coming from vineyards just south of the Bricco Boschis. Pouring a deep magenta color, it’s plush with notes of ripe plum, candied flowers, and cocoa. Medium to full-bodied, it has good richness with good lift on the finish and is approachable now. Drink 2024-2030. Audrey Frick. |

| JD 93 (4/2026): The 2023 Barbera D'Alba Superiore Vigna Cuculo pours a youthful red/purple hue and was fermented in stainless steel before aging 18 months in large Slavonian oak casks. It opens with wild black cherries, delicate rustic earth, incense, and violets. Medium-bodied, it’s vibrant and well-balanced, with fine tannins and a savory citrus lift that carries through the finish. A traditionally raised Barbera with both energy and structure, about 8,000 bottles were produced. Drink 2026-2036. Audrey Frick. |

| VM 93 (3/2015): Sweet rose petals, hard candy, cinnamon, mint and new leather open up in the 2010 Barolo Bricco Boschis. Sweet, layered and exceptionally polished, the 2010 is a superb example of the year. At the same time, there is more than enough fleshiness to allow the 2010 to drink well with just a few more years in bottle. Expressive floral and spiced notes reappear on the finish. This is one of the best young vintages of the Bricco Boschis I can remember tasting. Antonio Galloni. |

WA 96+ (6/2017): Cavallotto is on a roll with some very impressive new releases. The 2013 Barolo Bricco Boschis is a tremendous effort that has an edge on the excellent 2010 vintage in my view. The wine shows a beautifully exuberant but elegant bouquet with the ethereal and undertone fruit and spice aromas you get with Nebbiolo. Although the wine is never overdone, it does show silky persistence and a long finish that comes from the noble nature of the tannins and the wine's textural finesse. Yet, it is playfully deceiving in a way because behind that polished grace, it delivers impressive depth and power. VM 92 (10/2017): The 2013 Barolo Bricco Boschis is terrific. Dense and powerful in the glass, the 2013 offers notable energy and muscle in its dark-toned Nebbiolo flavors. Smoke, graphite, rose petal, licorice and menthol develop in what is a decidedly brooding, inward Bricco Boschis. There is real staying power and persistence to the 2013. I wouldn't plan on touching a bottle anytime soon. Antonio Galloni. |

JD 96 (5/2021): The 2017 Barolo Bricco Boschis is highly aromatic with anise, dried leather, and burnt orange. Ripe and structured, it offers ripe cherry, turned forest floor, and a long finish. The warmth of the vintage is felt while remaining fresh. Drink 2024-2042. Audrey Frick. WA 94 (6/2021): Available in numbered bottles, the organic Cavallotto 2017 Barolo Bricco Boschis is a generous and fleshed out expression that opens to immediate aromas of cherry, wild plum and cassis. There are floral notes as well, and some spice, licorice and grilled herb. Like many of the Barolos I tasted from this vintage, the bouquet is accessible and generous now, but the wine is tannic and more austere in terms of mouthfeel, requiring extra bottle age. The hope is that both the bouquet and the palate will evolve at the same pace. From 45-year-old vines, this was a release of exactly 19,410 bottles and 999 magnums. VM 93 (2/2021): The 2017 Barolo Bricco Boschis is superb. A rush of crushed raspberry, rose petals, mint, sweet spice and blood orange gives the 2017 its effusive, sexy personality. Medium in body and exceptionally polished, the 2017 is an absolute jewel of a wine. Many 2017s are nervy and in need of time to soften, but not the Bricco Boschis. All the elements are so well-balanced. If I was going to open a wine for someone who was not familiar with Barolo, I might very well open this. It’s impossible not to love the 2017 Bricco Boschis. Antonio Galloni. |

JD 95 (5/2023): The 2018 Barolo Bricco Boschis pours a deep ruby and has spiced and enveloping aromatics of cigar box, leather, pure red cherry, and turned earth. This medium-bodied red is approachable and graceful, with moderate tannins and good concentration in its notes of Earl Grey tea, blood orange, and raspberry liqueur. Drink 2024-2044. Audrey Frick. WA 94 (6/2022): The Cavallotto 2018 Barolo Bricco Boschis (a certified organic wine) is a lovely expression with fruit from one of the most beautiful sites in Castiglione Falletto, measuring 7.3 hectares. The wine is streamlined and tight with forest berry, blackcurrant and spice. It is taut and silky, showing fruit that has been shaped by cool nights and warm days. Bricco Boschis always delivers a special sense of sharpness and focus. Production is 23,747 bottles and 1,333 magnums. Decanter 94 (1/2022): Muscular and powerful, don’t search for elegance here. Bricco Boschis is an old style Barolo typical of Alfio Cavallotto and his passion for authentic wines. The concentration and power are impressive for the 2018 vintage. Prunes and leather, leafy lightness, a touch of orange and an almost grapefruit note are sustained by firm acidity on a large, full, biting palate built for the long haul, filled out with youthful fruit concentration. VM 92+ (2/2022): Cavallotto’s 2018 Barolo Bricco Boschis is a powerhouse. A blast of sweet dark cherry, menthol, licorice, gravel and incense hits the palate. Youthful and quite strapping in terms of its presence, the 2018 holds quite a bit of promise. That’s the good news. But readers will have to be patient, as the tannins are quite searing at this stage for a wine that has typically been a bit more forthcoming. This is an especially serious edition of the Bricco Boschis Barolo. Antonio Galloni. |

| Decanter 95 (2/2023): Alfio Cavallotto is one of the most traditional producers in Langhe. His winemaking is not only classic but old-fashioned: indigenous yeast, oak fermentation, almost no temperature control, and long maceration with submerged cap. His wines are dark and concentrated and this 2019 is no different. Earthy and smoky, it has dark cherry and blood orange aromas alongside plenty of dried fruits. There's firm acidity to the fore, as well as firm tannins, with great mid-palate extraction. There's ome stickiness on the gums now so it comes across as very austere at the moment, but it's very good on the finish. This deserves more time in bottle and consumers who appreciate the style. |

WA 94 (1/2025): Opening to a dark Nebbiolo color, the organic Cavallotto 2020 Barolo Bricco Boschis is a little richer in this vintage. The quality of aromas also takes on a bigger profile with dried blackberry, licorice and earthy black truffle. This apparently comes from the fruit but is also shaped by the wine's long aging regime that sees 36 months in Slavonian oak casks. As a result, the delicate mineral and floral nuances that are an important feature of this wine are less prominent in 2020. This is a release of 18,582 bottles. JD 93 (5/2014): A youthful saturated red/ruby color, the 2020 Barolo Bricco Boschis leaps from the glass with tangy aromas of sour cherries, orange peel, clove (it smells like heffeweisen), and dried earth. The palate is lovely, revealing a refined structure, ripe, velvety tannins, and a pure core of concentration with a ripe yet weightless feel. It has good depth and remains fresh, and its structure lasts long on the finish, but so does its fruit. I liked the palate more than the nose at this stage, and it’s likely going to improve with time in bottle over the next 12-15 years. Drink 2026-2040. Audrey Frick. VM 93 (1/2025): The 2020 Barolo Bricco Boschis is beautifully rich and resonant right out of the gate. Black cherry, blackberry, licorice, cloves, leather and scorched earth are amplified in this decidedly dense, large-scaled Barolo from Cavallotto. There’s a good bit of finesse here, but the 2020 could stand to shed some baby fat. Even so, there is certainly no harm in drinking this now. What a gorgeous Barolo this is. Antonio Galloni |

WA 95+ (6/2025): The organic Cavallotto 2021 Barolo Bricco Boschis shows tightness and firmness at this young age, and we can expect this pretty wine to soften and unwind slowly with bottle evolution. There are aromas of tart cherry, redcurrant, iris root and sweet spice delicately layered over a solid, medium-plus mouthfeel. However, what stands out most in the Bricco Boschis is the extreme focus and sharpness of its fruit flavors. This 7.3-hectare site has 45-year-old vines that enjoy panoramic southeast and southwest exposures at 230 to 350 meters in elevation. This wine ages in Slavonian oak casks for 36 months (both 20-hectoliter and 100-hectoliter foudre). Production is 22,000 bottles and 1,000 magnums. JD 94+ (4/2026): Also fermented in stainless steel and aged 36 months in large Slavonian oak casks, the 2021 Barolo Bricco Boschis pours a medium red hue. It opens with ripe raspberries, piney herbs, orange zest, and stony earth. Medium-bodied, it shows nervous tension, coiled tannins, and bright acidity. Somewhat inward at this stage, it clearly has the structure to improve over the next several years. 22,000 bottles plus 1,000 magnums were produced. Drink 2027-2047. Audrey Frick. VM 92 (5/2025): The 2021 Barolo Bricco Boschis is just as impressive from bottle as it was from tank a few months ago. Dark and mysterious in the glass, the 2021 offers up an exotic mélange of black cherry, licorice, new leather, espresso, menthol and dried herbs. This is an especially fine Bricco Boschis, a Barolo that finds the Cavallotto family in very fine form. (Drink between 2029-2041). Antonio Galloni. |

WA 95 (6/2018): Here is another excellent rendition of the celebrated Bricco Boschis cru (one of the best performing vineyards in Castiglione Falletto) from the talented Cavallotto family. The 2012 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe sees fruit picked only from the central part of the vineyard parcel. This area suffers less stress during the hottest months of summer because it is more protected and isolated. This wine is the proverbial overachiever among this estate's new releases. The bouquet shows a highly refined and focused quality with extreme varietal precision. The 2012 vintage stands somewhere in between 2010 for its elegance and 2011 for its power. In fact, I tasted this wine next to the 2011 expression and found that the 2012 vintage plays its cards closer to its chest. It has a lot to give in the future as it continues down its evolutionary path. Patience is required. Savory spice and smoke make for an elegant twist on the finish. VM 94 (11/2019): The 2012 Barolo Riserva San Giuseppe is a striking wine. Rose petal, mint, dried flowers and sweet red cherry fruit give the 2012 considerable brightness and floral lift, especially next to the 2013 tasted alongside it. Medium in body, with tons of supporting structure and energy, the 2012 impresses with its persistence, balance and classiness. More than anything else, though, the 2012 is not that far off the level of the 2013. It will drink well earlier and is also quite a bit less expensive. This classy, polished 2012 has so much to offer. Antonio Galloni. |

WA 99 (7/2020): The Cavallotto 2013 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe feels magically cool even as the wine warms in the glass. Eucalyptus, menthol and medicinal herbs rise from the bouquet, with dark fruit and savory spice in tow. When you first open the bottle, it shows a distinct mineral character with crushed aspirin, limestone and graphite. I opened a second bottle a few days before this tasting and had both bottles side by side to compare. Both showed impressive results with a pristine level of focus, sharpness and linearity. With aeration, those dark fruit nuances come to the forefront, showing dried cherry, plum and candied orange peel. A few hours later, you pick up on leather, tobacco and cedar wood. This is a fluid and ever-changing wine that is well worth adding to your cellar selection. What a beauty. VM 95+ (11/2019): The 2013 Barolo Riserva San Giuseppe is just gorgeous. It's good to see how well the 2013 has come together since I first tasted it. Powerful and virile, with tremendous aromatic intensity and tons of structure, the 2013 has so much to offer. Time in the glass brings out myriad layers of nuance. Sage, mint, lavender, geranium, cinnamon and blood orange add an exotic flair. Put simply, the 2013 San Giuseppe is everything Barolo should be. Unlike the Vignolo, the San Giuseppe is going to need a number of years to be at its best. Even so, it is impressive in the early going. Antonio Galloni. |

JD 98 (5/2021): The 2015 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is ripe with dried plum, saddle leather, crushed rock, and tar. Revealing a mineral-rich earth and full structure, with black tea, dried porcini, and cherry pit, it is warming with a wintery feel. This is a great one to lay down and check in on in 4-6 years. Drink 2025-2050. Audrey Frick. VM 96 (2/2021): Cavallotto’s 2015 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe rounds out this trio of new releases. A big, strapping wine, the 2015 possesses remarkable intensity to match its classic, mid-weight frame. Like all of these Barolos, it seems to have less overt fruit and more classicism. Camphor, licorice, menthol, pine, underbrush and scorched earth all run through the 2015, a big, brawny Riserva that will delight for many years to come. The 2015 San Giuseppe is what Barolo is all about. It’s a must for Cavallotto fans. Antonio Galloni. |

| VM 95+ (2/2022): The 2016 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is a powerhouse. Huge swaths of tannin wrap around a core of dark fruit in a brooding, almost somber Barolo that demands patience. Hints of licorice, spice, leather, menthol, incense and black cherry fruit begin to emerge with time in the glass. I won’t be surprised if the 2016 turns out even better than this note suggests. There is a ton of potential here. I find the combination of power and translucent energy both evocative and quite promising. Antonio Galloni. |

| WA 96+ (8/2023): Organic fruit for this wine comes from a small parcel within the hilltop Bricco Boschis cru with 60-year-old vines. The Cavallotto 2017 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe shows ample texture and softness with layers of dark fruit, plum, dried cherry, baked terracotta and spice. This vintage delivers more accessible fruit overall, and the Cavallotto house style delivers elegance and depth. Production is 6,637 bottles. |

WA 96 (1/2025): Aged in Slavonian oak botti for an impressive 60 months, the organic 2018 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is the big gun from vintner Alfio Cavallotto and his merry team in Castiglione Falletto. This wine is impossibly complex and deep with savory knots that are tied into fabric or rich dark fruit. The bouquet opens to blackberry, plum cola, dried herb, spice and a lingering floral note of lilac or violet. To my palate, the Riserva Vignolo has a little more vertical lift and minerality in this vintage. The Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is more about heft and texture, with dusty tannin. Production is 7,222 bottles. VM 95 (1/2025): The 2018 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is quite the powerhouse. Sage, menthol, licorice, cloves, dried flowers, scorched earth, leather and gravel infuse the San Giuseppe with all of its classic signatures. A dense, backward Barolo, the 2018 is going to need a handful of years to soften. It is a super-impressive wine for what has turned out to be an irregular vintage. This is beautifully done. (Drink between 2025-2040). Antonio Galloni. |

JD 97 (4/2026): The 2019 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe pours a slightly deeper ruby than the Vignolo and offers a seductive perfume of black raspberries, black cherries, suede, sage, licorice, and lavender. Fermented in stainless steel and aged 60 months in large Slavonian oak casks, it fills the palate with generous medium to full-bodied richness while maintaining remarkable finesse. Broader-shouldered and more expansive than the Vignolo, it combines even tannins, refreshing acidity, and outstanding length. This is a compelling, cellar-worthy Riserva that’s also stunning now. 8,888 bottles, 666 magnums, and 111 double magnums were produced. Drink 2027-2049. Audrey Frick. WA 97 (6/2025): The organic Cavallotto 2019 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe shows thick texture and density with dark fruits, plum and blackberry layered with extra depth. This wine makes a big impact on the palate and wraps lavishly over the senses. This is one of the most opulent and full-bodied editions I have yet tasted. The fruit is sourced from a 2.38-hectare site with 60-year-old vines with southwest exposures at 310 and 340 meters in elevation. The wine sees 60 months of careful maturation in 20-hectoliter and 100-hectoliter Slavonian botti. In a curious sequence of numbers, production is 8,888 bottles, 666 magnums and 111 three-liter bottle formats. Decanter 97 (11/2025): In the heart of Bricco Boschis, the 2.38ha San Giuseppe vineyard sits on a mix of sandstone and sandy marls. Crafted from the oldest vines, this Riserva simultaneously reaches earthy and mineral depths by way of dark and heady florals. Stunning fragrances of black tea, leather and crushed granite meld with pressed violet. Solid and sturdy, the palate sports a dense charge of blackcurrant and tart rhubarb. Sophisticated tannins are resolutely welded to the fruit. Patience is required for this to unfold. VM 96 (12/2025): The 2019 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is silky, elegant and quite refined, much more so than it was when I tasted it a few months prior. That makes me think it might be approachable earlier than I had originally envisaged. Floral overtones and beautifully sculpted Nebbiolo fruit are the signatures. Bright acids and beams of tannin shape the persistent mid-palate and finish. (Drink between 2029-2044). Antonio Galloni. |

VM 94 (10/2017): A dark, powerful wine, the 2011 Barolo Riserva Vignolo has nevertheless preserved good freshness for the year. The breadth and amplitude of the vintage comes through, and yet all the elements are impeccably balanced. Readers can look forward to another 20 years of fine drinking. This is very nicely done. Antonio Galloni. WA 93 (8/2017): 2011 Barolo Riserva Vignolo is a dark and succulent expression that showcases the characteristics of the warm vintage. The bouquet puts forth a compelling set of dark fruit characteristics with Morello cherry, dried blackberry, mocha and delicate accents of sweet spice. The vineyard team was careful to keep the clusters under the shade of the canopy for as long as possible during the summer months to prevent the grapes from ripening too fast or bleaching their color pigments. The results are very nice indeed. |

WA 95 (6/2019): The 2013 Barolo Riserva Vignolo surprises for the sheer darkness and saturation of its color. Upfront and without too much bother, the wine offers immediate richness and concentration with dark berry fruit, plum and dried cherry. There is a lot of intensity here, but the wine is more horizontal and broad in character than it is vertical per se. In other words, it shows a heavy center of gravity, and its very character is focused on richness and power. This wine ages in 20- and 100-hectoliter Slavonian oak botti for up to five years before its commercial release. Production is exactly 6,666 bottles. VM 94 (2/2020): A big, dense wine the 2013 Barolo Riserva Vignolo is going to need quite a bit of time to be at its best. Today, it is decidedly dark and brooding. Black cherry, smoke, licorice, iron, leather and spice add to that impression. Time in the glass brings out a super-classic profile of rose petal and tar, but the 2013 remains quite imposing. I can't remember a Vignolo with this much sheer brawn. Readers will have to be patient , but there is certainly plenty to look forward to. The 2013 saw 36-38 days on the skins followed by five years in cask, with a preference for larger and more neutral oak that allows for a more gradual pace of aging in the cellar than smaller casks. Antonio Galloni. |

JD 97 (5/2021): Lifted and savory aromatics initially jump out of the 2015 Barolo Riserva Vignolo, with graphite, incense, brushed leather, and dried sour cherry. Full and balanced, with dried currant, tobacco leaf, and clove, it has a powerful, noble structure. This is a wine with layered complexity that is hard to pin down. Drink 2024-2050. Audrey Frick. VM 95 (2/2021): The 2015 Barolo Riserva Vignolo is a powerful, tightly wound wine that is going to need a few years to soften. Its gorgeous, translucent elegance is impossible to miss. Sweet red berry fruit, gravel, rose petal, mint, licorice and darker earthy tones all run through this compelling, beautifully layered Riserva. Impressive. Antonio Galloni. |

| VM 94 (2/2022): The 2016 Barolo Riserva Vignolo is going to need time to emerge, as it is pretty austere today. Red cherry, iron, incense, white pepper, cedar and tobacco are enshrouded by a blanket of intense tannin. The flavor profile is decidedly old-school leaning, in a way that is not too common these days. Firm, dusty tannins wrap it all together. Quite frankly, the 2016 tastes like a wine from another era. I can’t wait to see how it ages. Antonio Galloni. |

| WA 95 (8/2023): Vignolo is a small vineyard site just down the hill from Bricco Boschis. The 2017 Barolo Riserva Vignolo (made with organic fruit) shows extra richness and density and more mineral definition that give this wine precision and focus. There is pencil shaving, crushed stone and licorice around a core of wild berry fruit and soft cherry. This vintage shows a broader more generous personality overall. The vines are 40 years old on average, and this Barolo ages in large Slavonian oak casks for 60 months. Production is limited to 2,609 bottles this vintage. |

WA 97 (1/2025): The organic Cavallotto 2018 Braolo Riserva Vignolo delivers the focus and straight-shooting concentration that we can expect of a Castiglione Falletto. The wine ages for an extended 60 months in large Slavonian oak casks, and fruit comes from a southwest-facing slope with 40-year-old vines. The wine's core of fruit remains on the dark side, but you also get pretty lift and verticality with tart berry aromas, shaved mineral, cola and mint (like when you walk through the vineyard rows in summer). The wine is amply structured and fleshed out and delivers texture. The Riserva Vignolo is my favorite of Cavallotto's wines this year. VM 94 (1/2025): The 2018 Barolo Riserva Vignolo is a young, tightly wound wine. Dark-toned fruit, leather, spice and menthol infuse the 2018 with notable density. Vignolo is typically marked by relatively soft, supple contours, but the 2018 is very much on the virile side for this bottling. Even so, it is pretty impressive, especially for the year. I would give this a few years in bottle, as the tannins are rather imposing in the early going. (Drink between 2025-2040.) Antonio Galloni. |

JD 96 (4/2026): From south- and southwest-facing vineyards near Bricco Boschis, fermented in stainless steel and aged 60 months in large Slavonian oak casks, the 2019 Barolo Riserva Vignolo reveals notes of ripe cherries, fresh leather, mandarin, menthol, and tobacco. Medium-bodied, it carries a compact core of sapidity, bright acidity, and linear drive. Compared to the Vigna San Giuseppe, it shows greater tension and lift, finishing with warming spice and well-defined tannins. Built for the long haul, it should have no problem aging gracefully over the next two decades. 6,566 bottles were produced. Drink 2027-2047. Audrey Frick. WA 96 (6/2025): The Cavallotto 2019 Barolo Riserva Vignolo (a certified organic wine) shows an earthy and savory side with the extra texture and concentration that is characteristic of this warm vintage. With fruit selected from a 1.96-hectare site with 40-year-old vines, the wine reveals a core of black and purple fruits, with dried plum and blackcurrant. It closes with powdery tannins. This Riserva ages for a long 60 months in 20-hectoliter and 50-hectoliter Slavonian oak casks. Production is limited to 6,566 bottles. VM 95+ (5/2025): The 2019 Barolo Riserva Vignolo is a deep, sensual wine. Dark red cherry, kirsch, cinnamon, blood orange and pomegranate all race across the palate. The aromatics are especially alluring, even if the Vignolo remains a bit less forthcoming on the palate. Kirsch, rose petal and mulling spice explode on the back end. This is the sort of Barolo that is a total turn-on with a bit of age. Actually, it already is. (Drink between 2029-2044). Antonio Galloni. Decanter 95 (11/2025): Sitting at lower overall elevations than Cavallotto’s San Giuseppe vineyard in Bricco Boschis, Vignolo boasts a similar southwestern exposure. It is characterised by limestone-rich white clay with little sand. It is thrilling in its earthy scents of tar, damp soil, sandalwood and forest brush. Dark red cherry and raspberry lurk in the background. Still very taut and tense, the palate is all about texture. Dry, chalky tannins cling to a smooth, almost creamy, packed core of wild, pure brambles. Vigour is deftly channelled and this ends on a bright note. |

| JD 91 (4/2026): The 2023 Langhe Nebbiolo is aged for 18 months in large Slavonian oak casks and pours a youthful ruby red color. It offers a ripe perfume that’s a bit shy, but the palate really shines, offering ripe red berries, a bit of rustic earth, fresh tobacco, and incense. Medium-bodied, zesty, and refreshing, with a good balance of sunny pure fruit, fine tannins, and refreshing acidity, it’s a very appealing Nebbiolo to drink now or over the next 8-10 years. A star in this category, no doubt, it’s delicious and I would snap it up. Drink 2026-2036. Audrey Frick. |

WA 96 (1/2009): The 2004 Solaia is breathtaking, as it so often is. Soaring aromatics lead to a sweet, layered expression of dark fruit. The wine possesses super clarity and precision with a gorgeous inner tension that carries all the way through to the long finish. The tannins remain incredibly finessed and silky. This is a more restrained, elegant style than the full-throttle 2001. 2004 is the first vintage in which the component wines were aged separately, rather than together, as had been the custom in previous vintages. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024. VM 89 (8/2007): (cabernet sauvignon, sangiovese and cabernet franc) Very saturated dark ruby, almost black. Intense bell pepper slaps you across the face, with aromas of dark cherry, cigar box and underbrush following. Dense, highly concentrated and intensely flavored, with harmonious acidity framing the sweet black fruit and black pepper flavors, and little of the bell pepper character showing on the palate. Finishes long, with very silky tannins. But the green pepper aroma is neither typical nor endearing in what is usually one of Italy's greatest wines. Perhaps I have caught this at an awkward stage. |

VM 96 (1/2018): The Barolo Villero is not my favorite Brovia wine, so I don’t tend to reach for it very often. Perhaps that is a mistake. The 2004 is simply magnificent. Dense and powerful in the glass, with all of the alluring aromatics and balsamic notes that are typical of this site, the Villero simply has it all. Antonio Galloni. WA 94 (10/2009): The 2004 Barolo Villero is heady, sensual stuff. This ethereal, mid-weight Barolo wafts from the glass with white truffles, spices, menthol and sweet perfumed roses in a defining expression of this Castiglione Falletto vineyard. The wine retains tons of grace and elegance as firm, yet well-integrated tannins frame the fruit through to the close. This is a terrific effort from Brovia! I tasted two bottles; the first was open and accessible, the second very much shut down. I would give this wine at least another few years in bottle before giving it a try. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. |

VM 94 (1/2025): A beguiling mix of tobacco, dusty earth, ash and sage gives way to dried strawberries as the 2004 Brunello di Montalcino La Casa slowly blossoms in the glass. Silky smooth with cooling acidity, it offers bright cherry-berry fruits complicated by rosy inner florals and hints of worn leather. A saline mineral tinge lingers as the 2004 finishes with spicy tension, no longer tannic yet still lively, with a twang of sour citrus mixing with licorice and a dusting of cocoa. Knowing how stern La Casa can be in its youth, this is a testament to its noble status among Montalcino crus. (Drink between 2024-2032). Eric Guido. WA 93 (11/2024): The Caparzo 2004 Brunello di Montalcino La Casa feels the most concentrated in terms of mouthfeel. The wine reveals a special softness that is linked to oak aging, revealing spicy cinnamon and nutmeg along the way. The fruit is present and almost chewy in texture with baked cherry and blackberry. Given the wine's plush richness and sweetness, the acidity is balanced but it plays a less prominent role in this vintage. |

VM 98 (5/2015): The 2004 Barolo Cascina Francia boasts staggering depth and explosive intensity from the very first taste. One of the most brooding, backward 2004s, the Cascina Francia is one of the only wines in this vintage that I am slightly disappointed to have opened, as it is so intensely backward. Hints of sage, tobacco, menthol, rose petal and graphite open up in the glass, recalling just how mesmerizing the 2004 was in cask. At once silky, while at other times virile, the 2004 Cascina Francia is constantly changing in the glass. The multiple shades of nuance and complexity are those of Nebbiolo from a great site as expressed by one of the region's historic families. The price of Monfortino has escalated rapidly over the last few years, but by comparison, the 2004 Cascina Francia is still available in the market and represents a good relative value. Antonio Galloni. WA 97 (10/2008): The 2004 Barolo Cascina Francia is an explosive wine that faithfully captures all of the promise it showed from barrel. This spectacularly rich, concentrated Barolo possesses striking perfume in its smoke, tar, spiced red fruits, licorice and flowers. The wine offers tremendous length and a finish that lasts forever. This is an especially dense, powerful Cascina Francia with a gorgeous core of perfumed sweet fruit that will require some time to fully emerge but is breathtakingly beautiful even at this early stage. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2029. |

| VM 100 (2/2021): The 2004 Barolo Riserva Monfortino confirms its place as one of the finest Monfortinos ever made. From magnum, it is so special. The long growing season produced a Monfortino of unusual silkiness, perfume and elegance. In many ways, the 2004 is the first modern Monfortino – the first vintage that was gorgeous right out of the gate, qualities it shares with the 2008 and 2014, also wines from later-ripening vintages. Soaring aromatics and silky tannins give the 2004 so much sheer appeal that recall the 1982. The 2004 has long been one of my favorites, as it is again on this night. Antonio Galloni. |

VM 95 (1/2025): The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva tempts the imagination with a mature blend of tobacco, dried herbs, autumnal spice, violets and lavender. It sweeps across the palate, profoundly textural yet energetic, with depths of dark red fruit offset by spiced orange. A salty mineral flourish embellishes the close. The 2004 remains remarkably fresh and vibrant, just gently tannic, finishing with a pleasantly bitter tinge that lingers as a hint of brown spice slowly fades. This is simply fantastic in its maturity. (Drink between 2024-2030). Eric Guido. WA 94 (4/2010): The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva reveals impressive richness in its wild cherries, sweet herbs, spices, minerals and tobacco that meld with a high-toned bouquet. This gorgeous, medium to full-bodied Brunello blossoms on the palate as intricate layers of fruit continue to emerge with a wonderful classiness. The long, harmonious finish leaves a lasting impression. This is a terrific effort from Costanti. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029. |

WA 98 (10/2007): The 2004 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is even more compelling than the Rabaja. It floats on the palate with an ethereal core of sweet fruit that calls to mind a profound Musigny, but with the unmistakable structure of Nebbiolo. The perfumed purity of the fruit carries all the way through to the deeply satisfying, resonating finish. Made in a soft, seductive style, this remarkable wine is decidedly more approachable and easy to appreciate today than the Rabaja. Giacosa fans will have a great time discussing the merits of the Rabaja and the Asili in 2004, but to me they are virtually equally moving; Asili for its feminine gracefulness and Rabaja for its size and power. The Asili should prove more accessible at an earlier age. Bruno Giacosa says his 2004 Asili Riserva will turn out to be just like his 2000 Asili Riserva, the wine he still thinks is the best he’s ever made. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025. VM 96+ (12/2007): Good medium red. Very ripe nose melds fresh red fruits, exotic Indian spices (coriander?), marzipan and deep nutty oak. Sweet, layered and deep, with highly concentrated flavors and powerful underlying structure. A wine of uncanny sweetness and breadth: this really coats the entire mouth. Finishes with substantial but suave and ripe tannins and Outstanding persistence. This should make a great bottle. It's easy to see why this is Giacosa's only riserva Barbaresco from the '04 vintage. For his part, he describes this one as powerful, while the 2000, which has been a personal favorite of Giacosa's since the start, is more elegant. |

| |
| VM 90 (5/2015): Bruno Giacosa's 2004 Barolo Croera is an excellent choice for drinking over the next decade or so. A pretty, understated wine, the Croera offers lovely balance in a feminine style that is typical of La Morra. Rose petal, mint, sage, crushed raspberries and anise shape the aromatic, mid-weight finish. If opened today, the 2004 needs a bit of air to soften the tannins a touch. The Croera is the one and only Barolo Bruno Giacosa made from La Morra. Giacosa eventually sold this parcel after a series of wines that did not meet his exacting standards and were never released. This bottle showed quite a bit better than the bottle I tasted for my recent 2004 Barolo retrospective. As it turns out, both bottles were from the same case I purchased upon release. VM 97 (5/2015): Giacosa's 2004 Barolo Falletto is a rock star. The truth is that, if tasted alone, the white label Falletto could easily be mistaken for the Red Label Riserva. It is every bit that compelling. Intensely perfumed yet also towering in stature, the 2004 is simply magnificent. The main difference between the white label and red label is finesse in the tannin, which is a bit less polished here. But that is only because there is a comparison. Taken on its own, the Falletto is one of the very finest wines of the vintage. Elegance meets power. With a little advance aeration, the 2004 can be enjoyed young, but it is frankly best left alone for another few years, especially for readers who only own a few bottles. This is yet another 2004 that has really blossomed in bottle. Antonio Galloni WA 96 (12/2007): Giacosa’s 2004 Barolo Falletto is so compelling it will be hard not to drink it in its youth. This gorgeous Barolo reveals a deeply structured frame layered with sweet dark fruit, mint, spice and pine. At once delicate and powerful, it is a beautifully finessed wine that is sure to provide much pleasure. A recent bottle of the 1982 is a testament to the virtues of this great site as interpreted by Bruno Giacosa. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024. VM 94 (12/2007): Saturated medium red. Musky aromas of sappy cherry liqueur and minerals. Juicy, mineral-driven and gripping, with excellent clarity and thrust to its intense, slightly candied flavors. A very sexy, wonderfully rich and broad Barolo with substantial ripe tannins. The pHs of the Barolos and Barbarescos here are higher today than they were previously, admits Giacosa, but that's a function of warmer years and riper fruit rather than any change in philosophy. JS 91 (5/2012): Compelling aromas of citrus fruit and berries. Full-bodied, medium tannins and a long pretty finish. This is ready. |

The tannins are refined and the wine shows lovely overall balance. In 2004 the French oak seems to be toned down relative to past recent vintages, which gives the wine a clarity that hasn't always been present. (Drink between 2013-2019). Antonio Galloni. |

| WA 92 (2/2008): The 2004 Campoleone, the estate’s signature wine, is simply gorgeous. This blend of equal parts Sangiovese and Merlot spent 12 months in French oak. It is a firmly structured wine with superb density on the palate, where layers of tobacco, dark cherries, earthiness, smoke, licorice and toasted oak all come to life. The tannins finish slightly dry and astringent, likely a result of an overly exuberant use of French oak. Still, this is a beautifully delineated, focused Campoleone. WA 96 (6/2008): The 2004 Messorio is clearly the most complete of these 2004s. It is a remarkably elegant Messorio endowed with a seamless, layered personality that exudes generous dark plums, prunes, mint, licorice, smoke, chocolate and toasted oak. Despite its considerable appeal, it is a powerful, structured wine with a significant tannic backbone that will require patience. It shows well-integrated tannins, superb balance, and a seductive, inviting personality that is absolutely irresistible. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2022. VM 92 (8/2007): Dark ruby. Refined aromas of blackcurrant, coffee liqueur and cassis are complicated by minty and herbal notes, but this also exhibits (like the Paleo) some rather obvious coconut. Beautifully suave on the palate and lighter in style than other famous Italian merlots, this exhibits compelling flavors of cassis, dark chocolate, and almost garrigue-like spices. Finishes smoothly tannic, very long and complex, with a distinct touch of mint and a hint of alcoholic warmth. |

Orange peel, white pepper, wild flowers, lavender, mint and rose petals all blossom in the glass. | VM 91 (6/2009): Neri's 2004 Brunellos are immensely successful. I look forward with great anticipation to the 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto, which should be released some time next year. The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is a big, fruit-driven wine. Made in a concentrated, opulent style, this Brunello offers tons of fruit and a round, soft personality. There isn't too much nuance in the wine today, but that should develop in bottle. The long, polished finish invites a second taste. For now, this remains one of the more overtly fruit-forward wines of the vintage. The entry-level Brunello spends roughly 40 months in large, neutral oak. Antonio Galloni. |

WA 96 (4/2010): The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto is deep and powerful in its smoke, tar, spices, scorched earth and plums. The wine has shut down quite a bit since I last tasted it a few months ago, and the refined silky tannins that were present a while back have turned decidedly virile. Still, the wine’s pedigree is impossible to miss, and the only thing this needs is time, probably lots of it. Pretty scents of soy, smoke and incense inform the long, elegant finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024. VM 90 (7/2010): Fully saturated deep ruby-red. Very deep aromas of ripe red berries and licorice, plus nuances of minerals and graphite. Then dense, rich and smooth in the mouth, with concentrated flavors of red and dark cherry, smoky plum and flint. Finishes long and smooth, with no hint of excess alcohol or of tired fruit-two characteristics that mar many '04 Brunellos. This is no doubt due to the Cerretalto vineyard, which is cooler and ripens later than many in the zone. That said, I really dislike the note of graphite on the nose, and never want to find this element in a Brunello. Even though I understand owner Giacomo Neri's assertion that this note is typical of the Cerretalto vineyard, I have always scored this wine lower for its presence. |

JS 93 (12/2010): Very fresh for a 2005 with dense fruit and silky tannins. Not the same depth of fruit of the 2004 or the 2006 for that matter, but it is clearly one of the best 2005’s in my opinion. I suggest another couple of years of cellar age. Great finesse, richness, and freshness for the vintage. WA 93 (6/2009): The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova reveals layers of dark perfumed fruit intermingled with French oak, spices, minerals, violets and licorice. The Tenuta Nuova is impressive mostly for its textural richness and sheer depth, both qualities it has in spades. The finish is long, sweet and pure. Here, too, the wine will need at least a few years in bottle before its full range of aromas and flavors emerges. Neri gave the Tenuta Nuova 30 months in medium-sized French oak tonneaux. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2024. |

WA 92 (6/2009): The estate’s 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is gorgeous for its clarity, elegance and precision. Medium in body, the wine reveals ripe red cherries, mint, minerals, tobacco and licorice in a taut, medium-bodied style. Today the Brunello is fairly tightly wound, but it should be a beauty once the tannins soften somewhat. This is a wine of grace, purity and superb balance. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024. JS 91 (2/2011): Love the fresh mushroom, dried dark fruits and cedar aromas that follow through to a full body, with silky tannins and a tangy finish. The acidity is a little aggressive but it's very Brunello in character. No reason to wait. VM 88+ (8/2009): Bright, dark red. Black cherry, menthol and truffley underbrush on the reduced, rather bound-up nose. Rich, broad, ripe and savory; in an elegant if rather primary style, with good vinosity and firm, building tannins giving the wine very good grip. I picked up a slight dryness on the back, but this unevolved wine needs at least a few years in the cellar. Not quite up to my expectations, though. |

WA 95+ (5/2012): The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento is developing beautifully. This is a decidedly feminine, graceful style of Poggio al Vento. The wine literally floats on the palate with gracious layers of fruit. Silky tannins support sweet red berries, flowers and spices on the mouthwatering finish. The 2004 is flat-out beautiful. This was a relatively generous harvest, and that comes through in the wine’s medium-bodied structure. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2044. VM 94+ (10/2013): Good bright medium red. Subtle aromas of spicy red cherry, red plum, dried flowers, tobacco and coffee are lifted by menthol and balsamic notes. Enters the mouth very suave and fine-grained, showing extremely pure floral and spicy nuances to the red fruit flavors. The very long finish is mountingly tannic but nobly polished, with lingering ripe, spicy echoes of darker fruits. This very impressive Poggio al Vento needs plenty of time in bottle to enter its optimal drinking phase. In my view, the 2001 Brunellos are generally better than the 2004s (with exceptions), but in the case of the Poggio al Vento the contrary is true. JS 94 (1/2011): I really like the layered character of this wine, which shows velvety tannins and complex fruit and spices on the palate. Full and delicious. Give it time to come together, even though its so wonderful already. Open this after 2013. |

VM 100 (1/2017): As hard as it may seem to believe, the 2004 Masseto is even more expressive. It, too, is incredibly silky, bright and polished, with captivating aromatics, nuanced red cherry fruit and stunning overall balance. The mid-weight, gracious style bears some resemblance to the 2010. From magnum, the 2004 is a showstopper. Antonio Galloni. WA 97 (6/2007): The stunning 2004 Masseto (100% Merlot) presents layers of sweet jammy dark fruit and mineral notes that burst forth from the glass with notable length, purity and delineation. It is a decidedly elegant and super-refined Masseto that continues to integrate its 100% new oak well, showing extraordinary class and fine, silky-textured tannins that caress the palate on the long finish. The 2004 will be hard to resist in its youth as it is incredibly delicious even now, yet it promises to develop gracefully to at least age 20. It is a phenomenal effort that is not to be missed. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2024. JS 96 (7/2014): There is such precision and refinement to this Masseto with a freshness and deliciousness that makes you want to drink it now. It full to medium bodied, with lovely density and a bright acidity with fine tannins. Goes on for minutes on the finish. Drink or hold. |

WA 95 (1/2010): The 2004 Ornellaia (magnum) has always been a beautiful wine, but stylistically it stands out quite a bit from other vintages of this era, something that is particularly evident in this tasting. The 2004 is perhaps the most delicate, feminine Ornellaia ever made. Silky tannins frame a perfumed core of ripe fruit all the way through to the sublime finish. The wine’s inner fragrance, sweetness and balance are all impeccable. The 2004 remains one of my all-time favorite Ornellaias, and it is firing on all cylinders on this night. In 2004 the growing season was long and even, with a cool early summer and warmer late summer. Yields were on the high side, as the vines released the stored energy they had held in reserve from the previous year, which required the estate to aggressively green harvest in order to keep the plants in balance. The 2004 Ornellaia is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. The relatively high percentage of Cabernet Franc may explain the 2004’s gorgeous, vivid bouquet. The wine spent a total of 18 months in oak (70% new) prior to being bottled. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024. VM 92 (8/2007): Deep ruby. The initially reticent nose begins with a hint of grass before revealing wonderfully complex notes of raspberry, red and black cherry, leather, tobacco and intriguing minerality. Much more explosive on the palate from the get-go, with deep, ripe red and black fruit flavors given extra lift and complexity by pretty coffee and dark chocolate highlights. The very long, nuanced finish features smooth tannins. A very successful Ornellaia. |

WA 96 (12/2007): The estate's 2004 Barolo Bric del Fiasc is another awesome wine. Initially linear on entry, it explodes on the palate with a compelling array of dark fruit, smoke, tar, licorice, new leather, plums and baking spices. Although Bric del Fiasc is typically a wine that relies on power, the 2004 is notably refined and elegant, with sweet silky tannins that support the fruit from start to finish. Simply put, this is a remarkable wine from Enrico Scavino. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022. VM 94+ (12/2007): Good deep red. Superripe aromas and flavors of plum liqueur, redcurrant, mocha and chocolate. Sweet, pliant and downright plush; a hugely concentrated, dense wine that saturates every nook and cranny of the palate. Wonderfully shapely, structured wine that finishes with superb grip and length and a captivating juicy quality. A great vintage for this bottling. |

VM 94 (5/2015): The 2004 Barolo Carobric is in a great place today where it is starting to show the first signs of aromatic complexity, yet it also clearly has plenty of upside for the future. Firm yet nicely integrated tannins give the 2004 much of its energy. Sweet tobacco, plums, underbrush, cherries and melted road tar linger on the multi-faceted finish. Carobric is a blend of fruit from Cannubi, Rocche di Castiglione and Bric del Fiasc. Antonio Galloni. WA 94 (12/2007): Scavino’s 2004 Barolo Carobric comes across as classic in its expression of violets, black cherries, minerals and sweet toasted oak. It too offers gorgeous inner sweetness to its fruit, but it is more focused and less concentrated than the other 2004 Barolos. This is a beautifully proportioned, vibrant Barolo that is sure to find many admirers. Carobric is made from a blend of Rocche di Castiglione, Bric del Fiasc and Cannubi This bottling has often suffered an identity crisis among the single-vineyard wines in the lineup but in recent years its personality has gradually begun to show its potential. The 2004 is a terrific effort. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024. |

| VM 97 (5/2011): The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is another epic wine. It is remarkably textured and vivid for a young Soldera, with endless layers of fruit. The wine literally explodes on the palate with sweet hard candy, expressive red fruits, licorice, tobacco and mint. Everything is held wonderfully in place by the silkiest of tannins. From start to finish this is a towering effort. The 2004 Riserva is so beautiful it can be enjoyed with no guilt whatsoever today. Readers should note there are three lots of the Riserva in 2004. This is Lot F77, which is made from Intistieti, the vineyard that has yielded virtually all of Soldera's most legendary bottles. |

| WA 91 (2/2007): The estate’s 2004 Guidalberto (45% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Sangiovese) beautifully captures the pedigree of its superior vintage. It presents a lively, darker color as well as a more vibrant, well-delineated set of aromas and flavors, including suggestions of dark cherries, violets, toasted oak and earthiness with a lovely underlying note of minerality and long, fresh finish. Although the Guidalberto is not made from the same vineyards as Sassicaia, it is hard not to wonder how that wine will turn out in this important vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2016. |

VM 96 (8/2007): Deep ruby. Absolutely ethereal nose offers intense yet refined aromas of ripe red cherry, smoke, leather and black truffle, with a pretty mineral element nuance and clarity. Velvety-smooth, ripe and rich on entry, then awash with mid-palate flavors of red cherry, smoky red plum, cassis, spices, bay leaf, roasted coffee bean and dark chocolate. Bright acids and silky-smooth tannins give this extraordinary wine extra lift and precision. Compared to recent vintages, this is a far richer and plumper yet extremely refined version of Sassicaia at a similar stage of its development. The finish goes on for minutes, highlighted by an enchanting mineral quality. The best young Sassicaia in years. WA 93 (6/2007): The 2004 Sassicaia is a lovely, understated effort. Medium in body, it presents nuanced layers of sweet dark fruit, licorice, menthol and toasted oak that gradually open onto a finely-knit frame of notable length. Today it appears to be quite reticent and still holding back much of its potential. Both bottles I sampled showed less vibrancy and freshness in both color and flavors than the other top 2004s I tasted alongside it, suggesting that the wine is still suffering from bottle shock. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2022. |

WA 96+ (4/2010): The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano continues to develop very positively. This huge, concentrated Madonna del Piano dazzles for the richness of its fruit and the delineation of its aromas. The clean, vibrant finish suggests many years of cellaring potential. The Valdicava Brunellos are often misunderstood when young because they possess so much richness, but with time in bottle the wines turn more delicate and complete. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029. JS 95 (1/2011): This is drinking a little tight at the moment. Still, the bright and decadent fruit give way to nice chewy tannins. Very complex, full bodied, and balanced. This needs some time to come back around. Drink this after 2012. VM 88 (7/2010): Very dark ruby-red with a light rim. Overripe aromas of red cherry, plum and underbrush give the nose a blowsy quality. Then sweet and creamy in the mouth, with pretty balsamic nuances to the ripe red and black fruit flavors. This rather fat wine finishes with decent complexity and smooth tannins, but I found myself wishing for a little more finesse. |

WA 94 (1/2021): A tensile, racy wine—two-thirds from Pernand-Vergelesses, one-third from Aloxe-Corton—the 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with scents of white flowers, orange oil, buttery pastry and nutmeg. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, it's chiseled and saline, with impressive cut and grip. BH 91-93 (6/2020): (the proportions have changed again and in 2018 are in a 35/65% proportion from Les Languettes in Aloxe and En Charlemagne in Pernand.) A restrained, ultra-fresh and distinctly floral nose reflects notes of various white orchard fruit aromas, lemon zest and discreet wood toast. There is outstanding volume to the rich and succulent broad-shouldered flavors that possess focused power on the beautifully long and sappy mineral-infused finish that is shaped by citrus-tinged acidity. This isn't quite as structured as the Chevalier, but it too is promising. Drink 2028+. |
