WA 92 (1/2009): The 2005 Solaia is a fresh, primary wine loaded with the essence of super-ripe blueberries, blackberries and sweet toasted oak, all laced with an attractive inner perfume. While the 2005 doesn’t quite match the very finest versions, it is a remarkable effort in this tricky vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2023.
VM 90 (8/2010): Saturated ruby-red color. Blackcurrant, licorice and a hint of spicy smoke on the nose. Juicy, spicy and penetrating, with lovely cut and intensity to its red fruit, oak and tar flavors. The long finish features building but smooth tannins and fresh acidity. (I will review Antinori's famous Super-Tuscans Tignanello and Solaia in my upcoming coverage of the Tuscan coast.) |

Today the wine remains extremely reticent, but the tannins show extraordinary purity and silkiness, suggesting the only thing missing is time. VM 97+ (10/2011): (three years in new barriques, then one year in stainless steel): Good full red. Distinctly balsamic aromas of brown spices, tobacco, pepper, camphor and star anise. Thick on entry, then bright and sharply delineated in the mid-palate, with great energy and tactile minerality. This compellingly solid, chewy, classic Barolo finishes with great tannic force and grip and is virtually impossible to spit. An explosively long Barolo that will need long aging. Clerico can now keep these bottles in the special climate-controlled Per Cristina room in his new winery until he feels they're ready to drink.
VM 94 (4/2012): The 2005 Barolo Percristina is gorgeous. Mocha, dark cherries, flowers, spices and tar are some of the notes that flow from this beautifully delineated, layered Barolo. The 2005 impresses for its length, textural finesse and fabulous overall balance. Sweet red cherries, mint and flowers meld gracefully into the finish. In many years Percristina can be a very big wine, but the 2005 is much more finessed in style.
JS 93 (7/2013): Wonderful aromas of dark fruits, flowers and licorice follow to a full body, with fine tannins and a clean finish. It's drinking beautifully now. So much nut and fruit flavors at the finish. Still very young. Better in 2015. |

WA 95+ (10/2009): The recently-bottled 2005 Barolo Cascina Francia is, as expected, somewhat closed down at this stage from an aromatic perspective. That said, it is impossible to ignore the wine’s richness and depth, both of which are impressive. With time in the glass hints of sweet roses, cherries, spices and tar emerge, all framed by impeccably silky tannins. As always, readers should taste this wine as soon as possible, as it will almost certainly head for a slumber during which it will be impossible to evaluate with any accuracy. Today, this mid-weight, graceful Barolo Cascina Francia looks to be accessible relatively early, which means around age 10-12 give or take. It is another superb Barolo from Giacomo Conterno. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2030.

Open-knit and supple, the 2005 offers good depth and vibrancy to match its silky, nuanced personality. The 2005 is an especially polished Cascina Francia that is just entering the early part of its plateau of maturity. Interestingly, it is also the total stylistic opposite of the much more virile Monfortino. Antonio Galloni.
JS 93 (3/2011): Aromas of truffles, forest floor, and ripe fruit. On the palate, leather and orange peel. This is rich and powerful, with some serious tannins. I love the fruit now, but should be peaking after 2014. |

| VM 93 (8/2010): Readers looking for a recent Montevetrano that is ready or close to ready to drink should consider the 2005. Early tertiary notes of tobacco and smoke have begun to develop. The fruit is round, soft and harmonious all the way through to the long, polished finish. This is a relatively simple, accessible Montevetrano in this context, but it should drink well reasonably early. The balance and overall sense of harmony remain that of a first class red. WA 93 (4/2010): The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova is quite a bit darker and richer than the straight Brunello. Cherries, plums, spices and French oak meld together beautifully in this silky, textured red. In 2005 the Tenuta Nuova boasts fabulous overall balance in a fairly restrained style for this bottling. Kirsch, roses and spices linger on the dark, enveloping finish. This is a terrific effort from Casanova di Neri. The Tenuta Nuova is made from vineyards in Le Cetine and Pietradonice, both located in the southern part of Montalcino. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2022.
JS 93 (12/2010): It may not be 2004, but this is a rich and dense wine with lots of blueberry and dried berry. Full bodied, with lovely combination of fruit and lightly toasted oak. Enjoy now or let it age for a few years.
VM 91 (7/2010): Good full ruby-red. Aromatic nose combines red raspberry, superripe red cherry and dried herbs (rosemary, sage, bay leaf). Then sweet, suave and wonderfully fine-grained, with fleshy red cherry and red plum flavors given shape by harmonious acidity. Finishes with excellent length, but becomes a touch austere on the back. |

VM 93 (5/2011): The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is typical Sangiovese from the southern part of the zone in a cool year. A gorgeous, translucent red, the Riserva offers up a classic profile of red fruit, tobacco, underbrush, mint and crushed flowers. The 2005 naturally has quite a bit of primary fruit left, but the real joy will come in another 5-10 years when the full range of tertiatry aromas is fully developed. This understated beauty is not an immediate wine, but in time it will thrill those who can look beyond instant gratification. An impeccably long, mineral-laced finish points to a bright future. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030.

WA 93 (4/2010): The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino captures an attractive middle ground between modern and traditional styles. Sweet scents of oak lead to ripe, succulent cherries, sweet roses, licorice, tar and smoke as this deceptively mid-weight, firm Brunello opens up in the glass. Waves of flavor continue to develop in the glass, balancing the tannins with great class. The only thing that seems a touch out of balance is the oak, but bottle age should help. This is a captivating effort from proprietor Riccardo Campinoti. I can hardly wait to see what future vintages bring. The 2005 Brunello was made exclusively from the estate's holdings at Le Ragnaie, close to Poggio Antico, and among the highest-elevation vineyards in Montalcino. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022.
VM 89 (10/2016): The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino is now starting to fray a bit around the edges. Advanced notes in the aromatics, slightly oxidative overtones and the wine's mid-weight structure all suggest the 2005 is best enjoyed over the next few years at most. When the 2005 was young, I thought and hoped it would come together in bottle. That may have happened at some point, but today, the 2005 is in decline. (Drink between 2016-2018). Antonio Galloni. |

JS 96 (6/2013): Ripe strawberry and black cherry on the nose, with hints of flowers. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and lots of fruit, vanilla and even white pepper. Long and rich. This is really amazing.
VM 93 (11/2009): Good deep red. High-pitched aromas of blackberry and bitter chocolate; more like the basic Marcenasco in its fruit quality than the Conca. There's a penetrating quality and enticing minerality to the pure dark berry flavors; this, too, strikes me as Burgundian. Finishes with the densest tannins and the greatest length of these three bottlings, but the tannins are fine-grained and arrive late, coating the teeth. A very good example of the grand cru quality of the Rocche.
WA 93 (10/2009): The 2005 Barolo Rocche shows lovely richness and depth in its dark fruit, flowers, herbs and French oak. The Rocche comes together beautifully in the glass, as the tannins soften a touch and the wine gains clarity. High-toned, floral aromatics accompany the fruit through to the long finish. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025. |

WA 95 (4/2009): The 2005 Barolo Bric del Fiasc is a huge, muscular wine. In 2005 the wine shows a decidedly fruit-driven, fresh style. The purity of fruit here is remarkable. The dark, brooding quality that is often present in the wine is absent, while floral, perfumed elements dominate in this vintage. The fruit remains dense, ripe and primary. From start to finish, this is a remarkable Bric del Fiasc. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030.
JS 94 (4/2012): I really like the dried red fruit, almost stewed, with berries and spices. Full bodied, tannic and powerful. This is a huge wine with a tremendous finish. Hold off on this until 2015.
VM 94 (12/2009): Good deep red. Sexy aromas of dark cherry, redcurrant, smoke, tobacco and minerals. At once silky-sweet and vinous; pliant yet firm. This classy wine spreads out to coat the entire palate. Superb volume here in a very elegant package. Finishes broad and very long, with suave, fine-grained tannins. A beauty. |

| VM 88 (10/2016): The 2005 IGT Pegasos is a wine Soldera produced only once and will probably not bottle again now that all of his wines are sold as IGTs. Soldera explains that Pegasos is a cask of Brunello juice that matured faster than the others and that was therefore bottled earlier than is typical here. That would make Pegasos a rough equivalent to the Intistieti Vino da Tavola (not to be confused with the Intistieti Brunello) Soldera made a few times in the 1980s. The 2005 Pegasos remains a somewhat compact, slender wine that has not really grown or changed much since it was first released. Occasional shades of Soldera brilliance come through from time to time, but otherwise this is a pleasant but not especially exciting wine. (Drink between 2016-2023). Antonio Galloni. |

VM 93 (8/2007): Dark red with purple highlights. Very pure, highly complex aromas of black currant, blackberry, violet, espresso and dark chocolate, with the telltale licorice component of this wine. Rich yet lithe on the palate, with juicy black and red fruit flavors complicated by black truffle and minerals. Extremely long, silky-smooth finish features seamless tannins.
WA 92 (6/2008): The 2005 Redigaffi (Merlot) is the most finessed, elegant Redigaffi I can recall. This is a Redigaffi that emphasizes clarity and precision over sheer power. Suggestions of new leather, spices, plums, currants, minerals, blueberry jam and toasted oak emerge from this medium-bodied effort. Although the 2005 might not have the structure of previous vintages, the tannins are beautifully balanced and the wine offers terrific overall harmony. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2022. |

WA 94 (4/2009): The estate’s 2005 Barolo Brunate is a brooding, mysterious wine that possesses a level of sheer concentration and richness that is exceedingly rare in this vintage. It is also an incredibly primary, full-bodied Barolo that will require significant patience, but all of the signature Brunate notes are in the glass, and this Barolo should develop into a splendid wine over the coming years. This is another awesome effort from Vietti. I may be underestimating this wine, as it is ridiculously great even at this early stage. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2035.
VM 92+ (12/2009): Good full red. Restrained but complex nose hints at musky brown spices, tobacco, violet, minerals and smoke. Suave and silky on entry, then quite backward in the middle, with a serious spine currently dominating. Finishes with substantial tannic structure and a slight youthful dryness. I like this wine's light touch but it's most attractive today on the nose. |

| WA 95 (10/2009): Donnhoff's 2007 Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Auslese leads with an unusually floral aromatic display, and the palate impression is so honeyed you'd think it were Bienenauslese (selected by bees). There is remarkable density here, with site-typical layering of flowers, orchard fruits, citrus, berries, along with smoky, peat-like, stony mineral suggestions that become more prominent as the wine takes on air. The finish is almost luxuriantly rich by Hermannshohle standards. But I am sure this wine will find more to say with time and not fall silent for 30 years or more. |

VM 94 (2/2012): Rich golden yellow. Luscious aromas of candied pineapple, lemon oil and acacia honey on a bed of smoky botrytis. The succulent weight of papaya fruit is levitated by crisp minerality on the palate. A fine balance of creamy fruit and herbal spice on the seductive, very long finish.
WA 93 (12/2011): Smoky black tea wafts over quince preserves and almost overripe pear on the nose and the glossy, subtly creamy, yet bright palate of Donnhoff's 2010 Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Auslese Gold Capsule. Nut paste and a savory smoked meat dimension contribute complexity to this lusciously lingering Auslese, but one that " like its Brucke counterpart' does not capture the dynamic spirit of the 2010 vintage to quite the extent of its Spatlese siblings, and would benefit (might well, in time) from a bit more focus. Still, this will impress regardless for at least two decades. |

| VM 95 (6/2020): Like its Brücke counterpart, this Auslese reflects genuinely botrytis-free grapes, said Dönnhoff, but ones that were too numerous and too high in sugar to use elsewhere, “and certainly not in the Grosses Gewächs, which would then have ended up with 14% alcohol.” Sea breeze on the nose intimates the sweet-saline savor of raw scallop that emerges on this wine’s lusciously lingering, mouthwateringly umami-rich finish. White peach and quince preserves feature throughout, reinforced on the soothingly creamy palate by nougat-like nut essences. WA 96 (10/2009): Gardenia, peony, and resinous herbs in the nose of Donnhoff's 2007 Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Spatlese give way to a palpably extract-rich palate of vibratory intensity, suffused with stony, saline, and tactile suggestions of mineral matter, yet at the same time rich orchard fruits. If the Krotenpfuhl was painted with water colors, the medium here is definitely oil, exhibiting both dynamic and intricate brush work as well as dense layering. This masterpiece - picked simultaneously with the corresponding Grosses Gewachs - was only beginning to show its depth in the spring and needed almost six months in bottle to really shine forth. Take as long as fate permits you to savor this; I can't imagine it disappointing a quarter century or more from now.
VM 93+ (2/2009): Tantalizing aromas of papaya, sweet herbs and incense. Discreet but intense black cherry fruit rises from the mid-palate, accompanied by brilliant acidity. Animated and finely spiced, with a deep, long finish. I may be underrating this. |

| WA 94 (12/2011): Picked-out, like its Hermannshohle counterpart, in the last, early-November days of harvest, Donnhoff's 2010 Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Auslese gold capsule was, he estimates, "perhaps 50% affected by botrytis, and dry botrytis, no mere rot." Candied lime rind and marzipan; lily and honeysuckle; white peach and salted caramel inform this wine's haunting nose and rich yet buoyant palate, with the mouthwatering savor that characterized the corresponding Spatlese undiminished. This needs some time in bottle to better focus, and it will be interesting to see whether it develops more sense of cut and brightness. But it's already irresistible, and almost sure to prove worth following for a quarter century or more. |

| WA 96 (2/2013): High-toned, distillate-like herbal extracts along with ripe fresh strawberry, apple and quince inform the scintillating nose and electrical charged palate of Donnhoff’s 2011 Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Spatlese. “We were able to just keep waiting on this site," he explains, “so that even this lightest wine from the Brucke was picked only in the last days of (regular) harvest." Hints of pits and seed, along with black tea, nut oils, zesty citrus, and myriad mineral impingements add to a sense of quickening that goes well beyond mere invigoration in this gem’s strikingly persistent, shimmeringly vibrant finish. I was left with salivary glands palpitating and arms covered in gooseflesh. It will probably be hard to resist such a wine at any point over the next quarter century, but those with the requisite remaining life expectancy should make an effort to defer for the duration the pleasure of at least the last bottle or two. |

WA 99 (10/2009): The over-ripe pear and quince featured in other nobly sweet wines of this collection are very much present in Donnhoff's 2007 Schlossbockelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Beerenauslese, along with aromas of distilled gentian, gardenia, lemon oil, freshly baked bread, and white truffle. The intensity of inner-mouth perfume here - orchard fruit, floral, and herbal distillates - is nearly beyond belief. Pear nectar, quince preserves, apple jelly, liquid gardenia, brown spices, and a certain saline and smoky suggestions of things mineral inform a finish of trance-inducing duration. This amazing elixir - harvested largely in the Turmchen section of the site - should be worthy of 40 years cellaring. When Donnhoff laughingly referred to this as the year of Felsenberg, he was not in fact kidding, nor was he referring just to the sheer number of bottlings!
VM 97 (1/2009): Rich golden yellow. Sublime aromas of candied citrus fruits, lemon oil and acacia honey. The succulent weight of papaya fruit levitates over the wine's understated minerality. The palate-staining finish boasts an impeccable balance of creamy fruit, smoky botrytis and herbal spices. An Outstanding effort for the vintage! |
