WA 96 (12/2010): Mascarello’s 2006 Barolo Monprivato is incredibly primary at this stage. The 2006 is an explosive Monprivato endowed with layers of ripe red fruit backed up by firm, muscular tannins that speak with great eloquence. I expect the 2006 to go through a period of stubbornness - as it often does - but it should begin to show well at around age ten or so. From time to time, the wine shows glimpses of its nobility. The 2006 is shaping up to be a profound Monprivato. The only thing it needs is time. This is a fabulous effort from Mascarello. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2036.
VM 93+ (11/2011): Medium palish red; less saturated than the 2007. Less fruity and floral and more earthy/spicy on the nose than the '07; exuded notes of red berry liqueur and underbrush with air. Then tighter and more penetrating in the mouth, conveying more force than the '07 and a much more austere texture. Seems large but at the same time lower in alcohol. This very precise, powerfully structured wine finishes dry, long and youthfully imploded, with subtle spice and floral nuances. More classic than the 2007 but also far less agreeable today: forget this one in the cellar for a decade, at which point it may make my early rating look stingy. |

Despite its seeming fragility, Monprivato is one if the most long-lived of all Baroli, even its weakest vintages. The 2007 is spectacular, but it is very, very young and in need of significant cellaring to shed some its baby fat. Purists may prefer the 2006. I have not tasted both wines side by side from bottle, but 10 years from now it won't matter. Readers will be thrilled to own either. In 2007 Mascarello opted not to bottle his Riserva Ca' d'Morssio as he didn't think there was a huge difference between the Riserva and the straight Monprivato. I guess we will never know for sure, although my barrel tastings have always suggested otherwise. In any event, savvy readers know what happens when there is no Ca' d'Morissio in a good to great vintage. Recent examples include the 1999 and 2005. | WA 94 (6/2016): A landmark wine, the 2009 Barolo Monprivato does not disappoint. The wine shows a medium garnet color and offers a full bouquet of red rose, pressed flowers, wild berries, spice, tar and licorice. Some distant white truffle also makes a subtle appearance at the back. The mouthfeel is absolutely polished and clean with silky tannins, balanced acidity and firm textural support. This is a lovely edition of Barolo Monprivato to store in your cellars ten years or more. |

WA 97 (6/2015): Mauro Mascarello does not disappoint with his stunning 2010 Barolo Monprivato. This is an impeccable expression from Castiglione Falletto that imparts an immense sense of purity and elegance. The bouquet opens slowly to reveal pressed flower, cola, dried ginger, forest fruit and balsam herb. This is a magnificent expression of Nebbiolo that changes and shifts each time you come back to contemplate its aromas. That magical fluidity is also present in the mouth. The wine presents silky tannins and crisp fruit flavors. Given the sheer quality on display now, you can count on Barolo Monprivato to continue a slow and successful evolution in your cellar. This is a true beauty.
VM 93-96 (11/2013): (this was a treat Mascarello pulled from cask at the end of my tasting): Medium red. Knockout nose showcases tangy red fruits, minerals and porcini. Conveys an impression of superb concentration and dusty extract, with the tactile solidity of the best young 2010s already coming through in spades. A wine of great length and potential. I'll play the interventionist wine writer and wonder out loud why this won't be bottled for another year. But as devil's advocate to my devil's advocate, 2010 is one vintage that generally has the extract and energy to benefit from an extended elevage.
VM 89 (3/2015): Mascarello's 2010 Barolo Monprivato shows good depth and volume in the glass, but the flavors are also a touch forward, which is a bit unusual for the year. Sweet red cherry, raspberry, mint, white pepper and orange peel linger on the delicate finish, all supported by silky, polished tannins. The 2010 is a bit more fully formed than it was a few months ago, but I don't find the pedigree of the best years, and I say that after having had the 1989, 2004 and 2008 in the days leading up to this visit. |

WA 95 (6/2018): These wines from Mauro Mascarello and his family all need more time to open, but rest assured they are heading down the right path. Like the others, the 2013 Barolo Monprivato is taking its sweet time. The wine opens to a brilliant ruby hue. This beautiful color intensity and even tonality is very characteristic of this cooler vintage. The wine is still on the nervous side, with tight tannins and cooling acidity. But it is also very elegant and fine in terms of its aromatic output. It will gain more volume and intensity with time. My score seeks to underline where this wine will be in a decade or more.
VM 89 (2/2018): The 2013 Barolo Monprivato is perplexing. Light in color, intensity and structure, the 2013 offers only modest depth, even by the standards of this typically restrained Barolo. The orange peel, rosewater, rhubarb and cranberry flavors are tart and washed out. There is lovely persistence and a touch of grip on the finish, but that's about it. Few growers have done more for the image of Piedmont and Barolo over the last several decades than Mauro Mascarello. The estate has recently replanted major sections of their vineyards, including Monprivato. Perhaps there was something going on in the fields that has affected the quality of these wines of late. It's hard to say. But there is simply no getting around the simple fact that this is the fifth year in a row Mascarello has underperformed. Antonio Galloni. |

WA 94 (6/2019): Mascarello's legendary cru, from this historic 15-acre, southwest-facing plot not far from the town of Castiglione Falletto, never disappoints. The 2014 Barolo Monprivato is as engaging and as individual as I had hoped it would be. Still in its youth, the bouquet reaches out with wild berry and strawberry, and it has started to show unique tones of natural rubber, tropical fruit and peach—not at all what you might expect from a Nebbiolo, but very delicate and elegant nonetheless. Like every Monprivato vintage, it will take years in the bottle to reach its full potential. Still very closed, this one will only just begin to open after the summer.
VM 93 (11/2019): The 2014 Barolo Monprivato is one of the finest Barolos I have tasted from the Mascarello family in a number of years. That is all the more remarkable considering a challenging growing season in which conditions were so tough that Mauro Mascarello did not want to show me his vineyard that summer. In the glass, though, the 2014 is gorgeous. Perfumed, bright and gracious, the 2014 captures all the best that was possible. Sage, mint, lavender and dark red/purplish berries add nuance to this super-expressive, transparent Barolo. Although the 2014 is not an epic Monprivato, it is a very beautiful wine. More importantly, let's hope it represents a return to the level of quality that was the norm at this reference-point estate up until 2009. Antonio Galloni. |

WA 97+ (7/2023): This is a true beauty. The Giuseppe Mascarello 2015 Barolo Monprivato borrows from the best of the Nebbiolo playlist. You get precision, abundance, focus and depth presented in proud and elegant fashion. Monprivato in Castiglione Falletto shows its worth as one of the best-performing sites in both 2015 and 2016. This warmer growing season presents red and purple fruit with cherry, plum and dried blackberry. A second wave of aromas washes over the senses with spice, licorice, tar and crushed limestone. The mouthfeel is stitched tightly together with interwoven layers of acidity, tannin and fleshy fruit.
VM 91 (2/2021): The 2015 Barolo Monprivato is a pretty, easygoing Barolo. Ripe red berry fruit and soft contours give the 2015 a real sense of immediacy. Soft and supple, with silky contours, it will drink well right out of the gate. The 2015 is not terribly complex, but it is nicely done. This is the best of the three bottles I have tasted so far. JD 98 (5/2024): Compared to the 2018, the 2019 Barolo Monprivato offers a more powerful nose with more nervous energy in its notes of licorice, raspberry liqueur, rosemary, and sweet earth. Ripe and powerfully structured, with a midweight feel but incredible intensity and length, it has a great level of completeness, with an earthy drive and ripe tannins that hold through its long finish. VM 95+ (9/2024): The 2019 Barolo Monprivato is a tightly wound, classically austere wine from the Mascarello family. Vibrant acids and beams of tannin cut through a core of red-toned fruit, orange peel, white pepper and flowers. Readers should be in no rush to open the 2019, as it is pretty reticent. Even so, there's tons of energy here. I have had the 2019 twice so far. | WA 98 (6/2018): The 2010 Barolo Riserva Monprivato Cà d'Morissio is one of the defining wines of this iconic vintage. This important wine was not made in 2009 or 2011. There will be releases in 2012 and 2013. However, the Mascarello family is not yet sure about 2014. If they do release the wine in that vintage, bottle production will be very small. Generally speaking, 4,000 bottles is the normal production target. This wine should be released more or less as this report is published in late spring 2018. There is a lot to say here, starting with the bouquet that is precisely defined and layered. You get tones of forest fruit, crushed mineral, wild sage and balsam herb. There are renderings of iodine, anise seed and licorice as well. What stands out most is the wine's seamless integration. The tannins are firm and dry, with just enough latitude to offer future development. This wine ages in bottle for two and a half years before its commercial release. It should not be touched for at least 5 more years, or preferably more. |

| WA 97 (1/2025): The last time we saw this wine was in 2014, and I remember that vintage as magical. The Giuseppe Mascarello 2016 Barolo Monprivato Riserva Cà d'Morissio is the estate's benchmark wine. Thanks to this epic growing season, we have a clear window onto the excellence of Castiglione Falletto, where Monprivato is located, and the current state of affairs at this historic winery. I found this wine to be quite beautiful and profound, with dried fruit, cassis, earthy tones and pressed violet. It is also quite generous in terms of mouthfeel, with integrated tannins that are finely woven with hints of dried mint and bitter plum. The vineyards were planted with a massal selection of Mascarello family vines. The wine is persistent, especially at the back end of the palate, showing firm structure and power. |

| VM 96 (6/2013): The 2007 L'Apparita is a bit richer and deeper than the 2009, but it never loses its essential personality. Hints of tertiary complexity are just beginning to develop now that the 2007 has been in bottle for a few years, but the wine is in an in between stage where it is neither young nor mature. Tobacco, wild flowers and menthol are some of the many nuances that emerge over time, but today the 2007 isn't quite ready to show all of its cards. Personally, I would wait a few years more. This is a stunning Apparita from Castello di Ama. Even though 2007 is regarded as warm vintage, this fruit did not come in until September 17, slightly late by Ama's historical standards. | WA 97 (10/2010): The 2007 Solaia saturates the palate with a heady array of super-ripe black cherries, plums, cassis, mocha and sweet French oak. There is an exotic quality to the Solaia I find totally irresistible. Despite its considerable ripeness and opulence, the 2007 Solaia is never heavy, rather it impresses for its extraordinary finesse and balance. Minerals, graphite and crushed rocks frame a long, seductive finish. This is a wonderful Solaia loaded with vintage and vineyard character. The 2007 Solaia is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese and 5% Cabernet Franc, aged in 100% new oak. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027. |

WA 95 (10/2010): Antinori’s 2007 Tignanello is wonderfully ripe and seductive in its dark cherries, flowers, spices, tobacco, sage, cedar, mint and minerals. This is as opulent a Tignanello as I have ever tasted but there is just enough acidity and structure from the Sangiovese to keep things from going over the top. The wine’s richness and warmth are such that in a blind tasting I mistook the 2007 Tignanello for a wine from Maremma! The dense, muscular fruit follows through to an impeccable finish with no hard edges and impossibly fine, silky tannins. Simply put, the 2007 is a magnificent Tignanello. The 2007 Tignanello is 80% Sangiovese aged in 300-liter French oak barrels (1/3 new), 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, both aged in 100% new 225-liter French oak barriques. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2027.
VM 91 (10/2010): Bright, medium ruby-red. Musky black fruits, cedar, graphite and minerals on the cabernet-dominated nose. Broad and lush in the mouth, conveying a full-bodied, weighty impression but also plenty of energy to the flavors of blackcurrant, tobacco and cedar. Finishes very long and smooth, with extremely fine-grained tannins. Though this is a very refined and highly successful version of Tignanello, I found it to be a bit more international and soft in style than the 2006 and 2004 versions, which I like better. |

| VM 93+ (7/2013): Good full ruby-red. Captivating nose of sweet red cherry, cinnamon, mocha and marzipan. Then sweet, suave and dense in the mouth, with superripe red cherry and strawberry pie flavors complicated by aromatic herbs, cinnamon and almond syrup. The finish is long and creamy, with smooth tannins, lively acidity and a peppery bite that adds further complexity. Very well done: this is one of the best Brunellos of the vintage. While Caparzo's entry-level Brunello has had its ups and downs over the years, La Casa (one of the first single-vineyard Brunellos in Montalcino) has always been one of the safest bets in all of Brunello land. I have had, and in fact still own, every vintage ever made of this wine (one of the first Brunellos to be aged in barriques , although today it's aged in a mix of tonneaux and larger barrels). WA 98 (2/2011): The 2007 Barolo Ciabot Mentin is one of the greatest wines I have ever tasted at this address. Deep, sensual layers of fruit flow from the glass as this full-throttle, intense Barolo reveals its profound, breathtaking personality. The 2007 shows tons of Ginestra nuance, but with extra dimensions to the fruit that literally covers every nook and cranny of the palate. Tasting this next to the 2006 is quite a comparison, as both wines are fabulous. Readers who can should be sure to own bottles of both. A side-by-side comparison is sure to be fascinating as the wines develop over the coming years. Astute readers will note the slight name change here, which is the result of new regulations that require the use of the historic vineyard name, in this case Ginestra, or a proprietary name. Call me nostalgic, but it is sad to see one of the iconic labels in Barolo disappear. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027.
VM 95 (10/2011): Dark medium red color. Less fruity on the nose today than the Pajana, hinting at menthol and minerals. Less rich and sweet too, in a distinctly backward style for the vintage. But there's Outstanding volume here and a hint of almost marzipan-like ripeness. Huge, broad tannins coat the incisors and front teeth. This will need extended cellaring.
JS 95 (5/2011): Full bodied, with velvety tannins and milk chocolate, and nutmeg character, with hints of hazelnut. Balanced and attractive. Best after 2015. |

Some tart acidity and dusty tannins contribute to a slight medicinal character of the finish, which hints at dark plum. This wine says 15% alcohol on the label but I never would have guessed it. WA 94 (10/2010): The 2007 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia bursts onto the palate in a big, brooding expression of Sangiovese from Castelnuovo Berardenga. Muscular and dense to the core, the 2007 powers all the way through to the long finish. Hints of smoke, tar, leather and scorched earth emerge over time, but only with great reluctance. In a vintage where so many wines are open, the Rancia comes across as quite stubborn and in need of at least five more years in bottle. That said, it is a standout, not to mention one of the greatest values in fine, age-worthy wine. In a second tasting the 2007 Rancia came across as decidedly more elegant and restrained in style, so it will be interesting to see where this ultimately settles within the context of recent vintages. Today I don’t think the 2007 has the elegance of the 2004 nor the power and ageworthiness of the 2006, but we will see. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027.
VM 92 (8/2010): (100% sangiovese; 14% alcohol) Dark red. Fresh red cherry, bay leaf and underbrush aromas are complemented by a strong mineral nuance. Starts silky, then turns minerally, brisk and firm in the middle, showing a penetrating quality to the red cherry, ripe plum and delicate herbal flavors. Finishes seamless and very long, but I found this to be a somewhat more backward, imploded example of Rancia than usual. |

WA 94 (10/2009): The 2007 Barbaresco Asili is a striking, elegant wine. Sweet roses, minerals, flowers, menthol and minerals emerge from this firm yet intensely perfumed Barbaresco. The wine reveals gorgeous weight and textural richness in a firm style that requires patience. Beginning with the 2007 vintage, the vineyards delimitations in Barbaresco have been re-drawn. As a result, Giacosa’s parcel in Rabaja is now considered part of Asili, which means there will be no more Barbaresco Rabaja from Bruno Giacosa after 2005. In 2007, the white label Asili is roughly 80% juice from the old ‘Rabaja’ parcel and 20% Asili from the vines Giacosa has always used for his Asili. Curiously, the 2007 Asili is a very soft wine, considering it is made mostly from vines that informed such majestic Rabajas as the 2001 and 2004. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2032.
VM 93+ (12/2009): Medium bright red. Rather brooding aromas of medicinal red cherry. Layered, fleshy, deep and sweet but youthfully backward, even a bit reduced, with an almost liqueur-like quality to its flavors of red fruits and candied rose. A lush and silky wine that finishes chewy and long, with powerful ripe tannins. For all its size and power, this shows the elegance of a Barbaresco from sandy soil.
JS 93 (3/2011): A subtle and refined red, with blackberry and dark chocolate character on the nose and palate. Full and very velvety, with a long juicy finish. Builds on the palate. Pull the cork in 2015. |

Sweet, silky and seamless, with almost painful intensity to its fruit if not yet as complex in the mouth as on the nose. Healthy acidity accentuates the wine's perfume. Finishes with very suave tannins and Outstanding floral persistence. Said Dante Scaglione: "I thought 2007 in Serralunga would be great from the moment of the harvest."
WA 94+ (2/2011): The 2007 Barolo Falletto is an overachieving wine, even at this high level. The bouquet has a level of delineation, sweetness, inner perfume and nuance generally only found in Giacosa’s Red Label Riservas. The Falletto impresses for the intensity of its dark fruit and superb overall balance. The extroverted personality of the vintage is quite evident, especially as the wine sits in the glass. Menthol, flowers and licorice add the final notes of complexity on the finish. This is an especially racy Barolo from Bruno Giacosa, but the trademark elegance is there. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2032.

WA 96 (10/2010): The 2007 Cepparello (Sangiovese) makes a case for itself as one of the finest wines ever made at Isole e Olena. It is an open, sublime Cepparello endowed with tons of clarity and definition. The ripe red fruit floats on a core of refined, silky tannins that caress the palate with exceptional elegance and finesse. As the wine sits in the glass its inner perfume gradually emerges, leading to an eternal, beautifully crafted finish. The ripeness of the vintage is beautifully balanced by the acidity that is the trademark of Sangiovese grown in these hillside plots. Simply put, this is an utterly thrilling wine that will be a joy to follow over the coming years. In many ways, the restraint, elegance and polish all suggest Cepparello is the Haut-Brion of Tuscany’s high-end, pure Sangioveses. The 2007 Cepparello was fermented in wood uprights and saw three weeks of contact on the skins. Malolactic fermentation took place in equal parts steel and French oak. The final blend was assembled and the wine was subsequently aged in French oak barrels (1/3 new) for 18 months. Proprietor Paolo De Marchi describes the 2007 season as one where periods of heat alternated with well-timed spells of rain. Overall temperatures remained warm (but never extreme) throughout the year, which allowed the fruit to ripen evenly. Still, it was a challenging vintage, and De Marchi was forced to carry out a stringent selection in his vineyards. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027.

Aromatic nose of ripe red cherry, menthol and underbrush, with an intriguing note of peach. Sweet, supple and dense, with ripe flavors of dark plum, almond, underbrush and tomato paste. Finishes long and smooth, with a strong coffee nuance. This reminded me a little of syrah! |

It is most often intensely aromatic, mid-weight and frequently out of balance, especially right after bottling. The 2007 is none of those things. WA 97 (4/2012): The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino is more than a worthy follow up to the spectacular 2006. Freshly cut flowers, violets, licorice, leather and tar meld into layers of dark fruit in a dazzling display of elegance and power. Silky tannins and expressive perfumed notes both add further refinement on the huge, explosive finish. The combination of ripeness of the year allied to a classic sense of structure is immensely appealing. This is one of the few 2007s I tasted that still needs time in the cellar, even though today it is flat-out stunning. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027.
VM 95 (7/2012): Bright deep red. Subtle, precise aromas of raspberry, minerals, smoke and flowers hint at a liqueur-like ripeness; there's something almost Burgundian here. Dense, thick and compellingly sweet, with Outstanding chewy depth and sufficient energy to its sappy red berry and mineral flavors. JS 98 (11/2010): This has fascinating aromas of seaweed, oak, iodine, rosemary, and currants. A subtle wine at first, but then it takes off. A phenomenal wine that is full bodied, tight, then hits you with mint, berries, currants, and minerals. Pure class.
WA 93 (10/2010): The 2007 Ornellaia is remarkably open and accessible, very much in keeping with the personality of the vintage. Clean, minerally notes frame a core of silky, perfumed dark fruit, mocha, spices, licorice, grilled herbs and leather that impresses for its exceptional length. Tasted next to the 2007 Le Serre Nuove, the 2007 Ornellaia shows more muscle (from the higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon), but in terms of pure quality the wines are very close. The 2007 is not a big, massive Ornellaia, but rather a wine built on elegance and finesse, both of which are on full display. The 2007 should drink well with a minimum of cellaring, but whether it will make old bones remains a question mark at this point. The 2007 Ornellaia is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022.
VM 92 (10/2010): Deep ruby. Knockout aromas of blackcurrant, violet, cherry pit, mocha and black pepper convey an appealingly refined quality. Enters with black fruit and black pepper flavors, then veers towards cedar, coffee, blueberry and blackberry. Sweet and seamlessly tannic on the persistent finish, this is by far the best Le Serre Nuove to date-and better than some weaker past vintages of Ornellaia. Its harmonious acids keep it dancing on your palate, despite its above-average concentration. A dead ringer for a high-quality Bordeaux. |

WA 98 (8/2011): The 2007 d’Alceo shows none of the Sammarco’s early appeal. It is a dark, inward wine imbued with black fruit, roasted coffee beans, grilled herbs and licorice, all of which build effortlessly towards the huge, explosive finish. This exquisite d’Alceo will require significant patience. d’Alceo remains a model of the level French varieties can reach in Tuscany. In 2007 the blend is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2032.
VM 97 (12/2013): Dark raspberries, cloves, menthol and crushed rocks wrap around the palate in the 2007 d'Alceo. Rich, voluptuous and sexy, the 2007 is very much a product of a vintage that yielded a crop of resonant, generous wines. The ripe, silky tannins will make the 2007 accessible relatively early, but it also has more than enough depth to age well for years. Today, the flavors are naturally still quite primary and there is still quite a bit of baby fat that has to melt off before the 2007 enters its prime drinking window. Still, there is a lot to like, including the wine's huge, palate-staining finish. Grace meets power in the 2007. In a word: dazzling! Antonio Galloni.

WA 93+ (10/2011): The 2007 Barolo Rocche is also a huge wine for this site. Layers of dark fruit, spices, menthol and mocha explode from the glass in this large-scaled, expansive Barolo. The Rocche shows marvelous intensity and seamless power from start to finish. Silky, polished tannins frame the dramatic, sweeping finish. The intensity of the mid-palate tapers off just a touch on the close, but that may be a function of the wine's youth. If the finish fleshes out, the Rocche could very well merit a higher score in the future. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027.
VM 93+ (11/2011): Good deep red. Redder fruits on the nose than the Conca, accompanied by licorice, spices and earth; very ripe but tight. Then big, rich and ripe but very young on the palate, with a suave texture and considerable finesse to the complex flavors of mentholated dark fruits, spices and chocolate. The huge, mounting finish features velvety tannins and terrific persistence.

About 20% of the wine consists of declassified barrels of Sassicaia. The 2007 Guidalberto is another sexy, ripe offering from Tenuta San Guido. The wine reveals gorgeous inner perfume and endless layers of fruit that coat the palate all the way through to the long finish. The 2007 is not likely to be as long-lived as the 2006, but I doubt that will be much of a problem as these bottles are likely to be long gone by the time ageability becomes an issue. This is an especially bold, perhaps slightly uncharacteristic Sassicaia in its extroverted personality, but it is beautiful all the same. The inner perfume and sweetness carries through the long finish, where the sheer weight and glycerol of the fruit leaves a lasting impression. The 2007 is more than a worthy follow-up to the profound 2006. While it may lack that wine’s freshness, structure and potential longevity, the 2007 is immensely appealing today, and should drink beautifully pretty much out of the gate. That said, Sassicaia is always the most restrained of Bolgheri’s heavy hitters. This is a superb effort from Tenuta San Guido. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2037. Antonio Galloni.
JS 93 (3/2012): This is classy on the nose with subtle currant, sweet tobacco, cigar box and dried flowers. Cassis too. Full body, with refined tannins and a solid core of fruit. Polished and very pretty. Long and delicious already. But you have to wait on this. It has so much more to give. Try after 2015. |

WA 95 (10/2010): The 2007 Redigaffi (Merlot) is totally seamless in its opulent dark plums, blackberries, chocolate, new leather and French oak. The wine turns deeper and richer in the glass, showing off its considerable structure, depth and richness. Over time, the clarity and inner perfume come to life, rounding out this magnificent Redigaffi. The 2007 is a Redigaffi built on understated elegance rather than sheer power. Silky tannins frame a long, refined finish. This is a wonderful effort from Tua Rita. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020.
VM 91 (10/2010): (100% merlot) Moderately saturated ruby. Very ripe, almost cooked aromas of blackcurrant, plum, coffee, loam and chocolate, plus a strong herbal edge. Much fresher on the palate, where the sweet, plush, creamy flavors of chocolate-covered cherries, oak and mocha are nicely lifted by bright, harmonious acids, which keep this wine from coming off as topheavy. An immediately accessible, sweet style of merlot with rather soft, ripe tannins and above-average length. I find a bit too much of everything here-too ripe, too sweet, too herbal-but I'm confident that many consumers will greatly enjoy this very showy style of merlot. |

JS 98 (2/2013): An impressively structured wine. Aromas of blueberries and blackberries with hints of violets. Full body, with velvety and rich tannins. Very tannic and powerful yet the tannins are polished and pretty. Layers of everything here. Give this another three to four years before opening.
WA 95 (4/2012): The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano looks to be a modern-day version of the 1990. Layers of seamless fruit grace the palate in this large-scaled, dramatic Brunello. The 2007 boasts remarkable intensity to match its undeniably sexy personality. Although the 2007 will require at least several years in bottle to blossom, the relatively soft tannins will make it more pleasurable than the 2006 at the outset. Both vintages will be fascinating to follow over the coming years. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027. |

VM 92 (11/2011): Palish bright red. Scented nose offers red cherry, mint and an ineffable floral perfume. Juicy, intense and delineated, with lovely orange peel lift to its sweet red fruit and floral flavors. The finish coats the mouth with dusty, fine tannins.
