| VM 94 (2/2010): All readers need to do is taste the 2007 Barbaresco to get a sense of the promise the vintage holds at Gaja. Soft and seamless on the palate, the Barbaresco shows wonderful integrity in its fruit in an opulent, yet mid-weight style. Fragrant, perfumed aromatics are woven throughout, while an attractive spiciness develops in the glass. There is incredible depth to the fruit and simply phenomenal overall balance. Readers will not want to miss this Barbaresco; arguably Gaja's finest since 1997. |

JS 95 (9/2018): A rich and layered Barbaresco with cedar and plums, as well as light leather and rose aromas that follow to a full yet balanced palate and a chewy finish. Very polished. Drink in 2020, but already beautiful.
VM 94 (10/2018): Gaja's 2015 Barbaresco is gorgeous. Deep, pliant and resonant, the 2015 exudes class from the very first taste. Today, the aromatics are not especially open or expressive, but it is the wine's depth and overall sense of harmony that really carry the day. Hints of orange peel, spice and rosewater give the 2015 an exotic aromatic top register that is hugely appealing. Readers will have a hard time keeping their hands off this gem. The 2015 is a wonderfully complete and harmonious wine, but it really does need a few years in the cellar to fully unwind. Antonio Galloni. |

VM 96 (11/2019): Gaja's 2016 Barbaresco is positively stellar. A wine of poise and grace, the 2016 has so much to offer. Expressive spice and floral notes open up first, but what really stands out is the wine's nuance and delineation. There is a sense of translucency to the 2016 that is impossible to miss. Sweet red cherry, mint, cinnamon and rose petal develop in the glass, adding further shades of nuance. Quite simply, the 2016 is one of the very finest Gaja Barbarescos in recent memory. This is such a gorgeous wine. Don't miss it. Antonio Galloni.
JS 96 (8/2019): This is all about finesse with power. Such great length here with ever so refined tannins and precise strawberry, cedar, dried-rose and mineral character. Medium body. Fresh and vivid finish. Hard not to drink now, but wait until at least 2021.
WA 96 (6/2019): I tasted this wine over two sittings, one at the winery and one at my home office a few weeks later. Although I can't claim any extraordinary differences between the two sessions, I noticed a few minimal shifts that are essential to understanding the wine's future aging ability. The 2016 Barbaresco starts off slow at first, showing a small margin of aromatic evolution in the glass. But come back two hours later, and you can almost hear the soft sounds of the symphony playing just below the surface. The 2016 vintage is characterized by the solid intensity and firmness of its aromas, which transcend fruit and veer toward balsamic herb, licorice, tar and smoke instead. The tannins offer a moment of sweetness and softness, before you are aware of their undeniable firmness. In all, there is a certain glossiness or satiny quality to the mouthfeel that underlines the wine's carefully crafted integration. I would describe this as a classic and also a somewhat austere Barbaresco that fully deserves extra cellar time to stretch those tight muscles and grow in volume. This wine will award those who wait. |

JD 95+ (12/2020): A pretty, perfumed example of this cuvee, the 2017 Barbaresco offers lots more red fruits as well as spice, dried flowers, incense, and loamy soil. With more licorice and minerality emerging with time in the glass, it hits the palate with medium-bodied richness, an elegant texture, plenty of firm tannins, and a great finish. It doesn't get more textbook Nebbiolo than this. This classic beauty is going to benefit from 5-7 years of bottle age and have 2-3 decades of longevity.
VM 92 (10/2020): The 2017 Barbaresco is a very pretty, gracious wine. Crushed red berries, dried flowers, mint and sweet spice all grace this decidedly airy, ethereal Barbaresco from the Gaja family. In 2017, the Barbaresco is a bit on the lighter side of things. In exchange, though, it will drink well right out of the gate. Antonio Galloni.
WA 95 (7/2020): The Gaja 2017 Barbaresco is nuanced and delicate with ever-expanding aromatic intensity that amply fills the balloon of your glass. The wine takes a little while to open fully, and it slowly releases forest berry, powdered licorice, toasted aniseed, spearmint, dried lavender and rosemary essence to build a lasting bouquet. The mouthfeel is streamlined and almost steely, with an extremely linear approach that adds to its length and persistency. The tannins are tucked into the wine's delicate fiber, but you do feel the extra textural firmness of the hot vintage nonetheless. As we have seen in past vintages, more definition is added by a pretty mineral note that is a common thread in these wines from Gaja. |

JD 97 (5/2024): A brightly jeweled ruby hue, the 2021 Barbaresco is super-expressive, with loads of wild raspberries that leap from the glass along with notes of strawberries, pressed roses, fresh orange, and violet. As it opens, it evens picks up some spice box, cigar incense, and cherry notes. Crystalline in nature and ripe, this next-level red delivers ripe, sweet tannins, great tension, and fresh, vibrant acidity, without any austerity. A luxury racecar, it’s fantastic and possibly the wine of the year. Drink 2025-2055.
WA 96 (1/2025): This was an epic vintage, and the entire Gaja family is ready to sing its praises. The 2021 Barbaresco sets the tone with sweet cherry flavors framed by spice, earthy notes and elegantly sweet tannins. Giovanni Gaja says the 2021 growing season had two phases: the first six months of the year saw rain and cool temperatures with some frost and soggy conditions until May; however, from June forward, the season saw sunny days without excessive heat spikes. Indeed, 2021 marks the beginning of drought years that lasted until 2023. Barbaresco was hit by hail on July 31, 2021, but the Gaja vineyards were unharmed. In line with the character of the vintage, this wine shows succulent fruit that is balanced and not too ripe. There is depth and volume here.
VM 94 (10/2024): The 2021 Barbaresco is a powerful, layered wine from Gaja. In some recent years, the Barbaresco has been pretty approachable out of the gate, but the 2021 is a deep, serious wine with a lot of potential for future development. The vines are over 65-years-old and are planted in limestone clay and marl soils. Costa Russi is known for delicate, light-bodied wines that exhibit floral aromas of rose hip and lavender, as well as darker fruit tones at the back. Those qualities are beautifully evident in this vintage. The mouthfeel is characterized by a firm sense of tannic structure that is common to all of Gaja's new releases in the 2013 vintage. |

VM 96 (10/2018): The 2015 Barbaresco Costa Russi is once again striking in 2015. Vertical and lifted, with tremendous energy, the 2015 has so much to offer. Once the most easygoing of the three Barbaresco crus, Costa Russi has inched up in quality in recent years. The 2015 shows the suave mid-palate and raciness that is so typical of this wine, and yet it also has much more obvious structural underpinnings than once was the case. WA 93 (6/2018): The 2015 Barbaresco Costa Russi was about to be bottled before I tasted it. Like the other wines from this warm vintage, you are treated to extra plushness and roundness with dark berry fruit intensity. This wine also offers unexpected mineral tones that come off as crushed oyster shell and talc powder. These add to the drying, almost nervous, tension you feel in the mouth. |

VM 98 (11/2019): The 2016 Barbaresco Costa Russi is ripe, creamy and enveloping, as it so often is, and yet also preserves the super classic sense of structure that runs through all these wines. In 2016, Costa Russi has an extra touch of mid-palate sweetness that gives the wine its sense of immediacy. Succulent red cherry, rosewater, kirsch, mint and dried flowers meld together in the glass. Soft and sensual, with tons of allure, Costa Russi is another winner from Gaja. Time in the glass brings out the wine's density and tannins, both of which it has in spades. Antonio Galloni.
WA 96+ (8/2019): The 2016 Barbaresco Costa Russi is a very botanical wine in terms of its aromas, with lovely perfumes of rose, elderflower, sambuco and anise seed, along with a touch of glycerine. It then follows up with some sweetness that feels very embracing in this wine. This is the more ephemeral, delicate and floral member of the extended Barbaresco family from Gaja, with a crunchy tannic bite, but nothing too severe. There is a really good vitality and energy to this very expressive wine. Costa Russi remains the smallest of Gaja's single-vineyard wines, and Gaia Gaja warns that there will be considerably less of it starting with the 2017 vintage. Production for this wine had always varied greatly to begin with, due in part to the fragile nature of the 80-year-old vines, but about half of those were removed and replanted. It will be a while before the new vines are old enough to go online. So, with some 10,000 bottles made in 2016 and 6,000 bottles in 2015, we can count on those numbers to be split by half over the next three to four years, for sure. |

Don’t touch for five to 10 years. A celebratory wine for Gaja’s return to the Barbaresco appellation.

This is a sheer and powerful expression of Nebbiolo that boasts a very firm and precise textural quality. The wine is 100% Nebbiolo, as blended Barbera is no longer part of the Sorì San Lorenzo DNA. The tannins are sharply delineated with a crunchy snap that you feel on the palate. This should definitely serve to keep the wine firmly rooted and committed to a slow aging trajectory. That structural firmness is the defining characteristic of this wine, and that unique identity is even more evident now that this wine is officially classified as Barbaresco. |

JD 97+ (5/2025): The 2022 Barbaresco Sori San Lorenzo is more contemplative of a wine, with aromas of deeper spice and an earthier component compared to the Tildin, but as it opens, it takes on pure notes of cherry liqueur, preserved orange, and forest earth. The palate is elegant but with a velvety texture upfront, even freshness, with a deeper richness to its texture. Long on the palate, with a long finish, it’s built for the long haul and is likely going score even higher in the future. Audrey Frick.
VM 95 (10/2025): The 2022 Barbaresco Sorì San Lorenzo is a dense, potent wine. Black cherry, scorched earth, leather, incense and gravel stain the palate. Sorì San Lorenzo is often virile and somber, as it is here, but the 2022 does not quite have the dimension of most years. Perhaps that will emerge over time. We will see. (Drink between 2028-2047). | VM 100 (11/2019): The 2016 Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn is a fabulous, incredibly complete wine that soars out of the glass with explosive structure and vertical lift. The tannins are very much present, but also matched beautifully by the wine's aromatic intensity and overall drive. Dark macerated cherry, spice, leather, licorice, plum and mocha add darker shades of nuance. In 2016, Sorì Tildìn is a bit more brooding and bigger than it often is, and yet all the elements are impeccably balanced. It is quite simply a majestic wine of real grandeur and total class, but it is not obvious. Sorì Tildìn will appeal most to readers who understand what the truest essence of Nebbiolo is all about. JS 95 (9/2018): More forward and in a more earthly realm than the dizzying heights of the Conteisa this vintage, but it’s so endearing and immediately delights. The aromas range from elderberries and black cherries to brambleberries and Chinese spices. Full-bodied and structured with powerful tannins that encase bright and forthright blue fruit, which is polished over by a sheen of glimmering acidity. Long finish. Delicious now, but better in 2022.
WA 94 (6/2018): This is a slightly more subdued vintage of this legendary wine, albeit just as sophisticated as past editions. The 2014 Barolo Sperss opens to gorgeous aromas of dark fruit, wet earth and white truffle. The vineyards in Serralunga d'Alba produced much less fruit than average and suffered from bouts of downy mildew during the rainy seasons. But Serralunga d'Alba fruit is also harvested late, and that extra time was important for achieving grape ripeness targets. The wine presents depth and complexity within the context of a thinner vintage. Having said that, the bouquet is spectacular.
VM 93 (2/2018): The 2014 Barolo Sperss is an attractive wine from Gaja's vineyards in Serralunga. There is good depth to the succulent black cherry, plum, smoke and licorice flavors, although it doesn't quite have the explosiveness or power of the very best years. Because of the wine's slender personality, the oak is a bit more evident than is typically the case. The Sperss also feels a bit forced in terms of extraction and oak, especially next to the Conteisa, where the choices have turned out to be more successful in bringing out the best the vintage has to offer. JD 94 (11/2019): The 2017 Gaia & Ray reminds me of a top Sonoma Coast Chardonnay with is incredible salty minerality as well as classic Chardonnay notes of stone fruits, caramelized pineapple, white flowers, and hints of baking spices. Rich, medium-bodied, beautifully balanced, it’s a beautiful and classy white well worth drinking and cellaring. First released in 1983, this cuvee is named after Lucia and Angelo Gaja's daughter, Gaia Gaja, and Angelo Gaja's grandmother Clotilde Rey. (Drink between 2019-2031).
WA 93+ (6/2019): This wine was first made in 1983, and back then, no malolactic fermentation occurred. Jump forward in time to the 2017 Langhe Gaia & Rey, and this is another vintage in which malo did not start. (Partial malolactic returns in 2018). Since those first years of production, the oak usage has also been tweaked, now with less barrique in favor of more botte grande. Thanks to these changes, the aromatic profile of this wine veers toward citrus and rich tropical fruit, especially in a warm vintage such as this. However counterintuitive, this edition also shows a very bright and precise touch of acidity that serves to give the wine balanced and mouth-cleansing salinity.
VM 92 (3/2020): The 2017 Gaia & Rey (Chardonnay) is a very pretty wine. In. this warm, dry year Gaja has done a terrific job in retaining a good bit of freshness. The 2017 is bright, crisp and varietal, with well-balanced oak and light tropical notes that add nuance. This is such a pretty wine, especially for the year. (Drink between 2020-2027). | VM 95 (11/2017): A more exotic side of this site emerges from the 2008 L’Apparita. According to Marco Pallanti, the weather was quite warm in 2008. Rain towards the end of the season was more problematic for the later-ripening varieties, but that was not an issue for the Merlot. Black cherry, plum, smoke and licorice overtones add to an impression of darkness. Silky, beautifully ripe tannins and unctuous fruit with the natural richness that is achieved in late harvests add to the wine’s considerable appeal. WA 94 (8/2011): The 2008 Tignanello is unquestionably one of the wines of the vintage. The 2008 isn’t a huge or obvious Tignanello, rather it is a wine that impresses for its sublime elegance and precision. Understated layers of fruit caress the palate like cashmere in this impeccable, soft wine. There is not a hard edge to be found. Black cherries, tobacco, smoke and licorice are some of the notes that come through on the finish. The flavor profile is decidedly on the dark side, but the wine’s structure is medium in body and intensity. In 2008 the Tignanello has more energy, focus and length than the Solaia. It is a fabulous achievement! The 2008 Tignanello is 80% Sangiovese aged in 300-liter French oak barrels (1/3rd new), 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, both aged in 100% new 225-liter French oak barriques. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.
JS 93 (9/2011): Aromas of dried berries and Christmas cake follow through to a full body, with velvety tannins and chewy finish. Beautiful finish. Lots of fruit and pretty oak but in a pretty combination. Best after 2013. |

| VM 96 (10/2012): One of the absolute highlights in this portfolio of utterly amazing wines, the 2008 Barbaresco Riserva Asili possesses marvelous depth and richness, but also little of the early approachability and sexiness of Asili. With time in the glass, the wine's inner perfume gradually emerges, but ultimately this is a Barbaresco to bury in the deepest corner of the cellar. The opulence and massiveness of the wine fits in with the Clerico philosophy, but unlike the Barolo Briccotto its strongest cards are played with a more subtle strategy. The aromas of black fruit and spice are wrapped a bit tighter, and the wine shows some nervous tension in the glass that needs to soften with age. I loved those delicate sprigs of mint and wild flower that somehow emerge from the inner depths of this rock-solid wine. Terrible mudslides in 2009 damaged the Badarina vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba and Clerico did not produce the Aeroplanservaj that year. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2030.
VM 94+ (12/2013): (from 35-year-old vines in Badarina in Serralunga): Good deep red. Medicinal aromas and flavors of dark raspberry, cherry, menthol and tobacco; very Serralunga. At once suave and penetrating, offering terrific definition and inner-mouth aromatic character. Powerful acidity is keeping this wine tightly wrapped today, but it has buns of steel to support a graceful evolution in bottle. Incidentally, there's no 2009 Aeroplan Servaj due to a landslide that occurred during a huge rain storm in April of 2009, which also cost Clerico 15 rows of Ciabot Mentin.

VM 96 (10/2011): (Clerico is no longer using Ginestra on the label as of 2007: a change in the law recognized numerous crus, including Ginestra, but since many other growers use Ginestra on their labels, Clerico decided to name this wine after his own parcel): Medium red. Deeper and richer on the nose than the Pajana, with scents of redcurrant, mocha, dried flowers and earth. Wonderfully deep, layered and sweet; lush but with good limestone lift. This floods the palate with flavor and lingers with exceptional purity and persistence.
JS 93 (7/2012): Pretty nose of crushed dark fruits and dried lavender follow through to a full body, with chewy yet polished tannins and long structured finish. Racy. Best in 2016.
WA 92 (4/2012): The 2008 Barolo Ciabot Mentin is a little more interesting than the Pajana, but not much. It shows good energy and length, but never seems to truly blossom in the way the best vintages typically do. Flowers, mint, licorice and red berries are woven into the long, saline finish. Today the Ciabot Mentin comes across as compact, austere and lacking fruit. It shows good up-front energy, but then tails off abruptly on the mid-palate. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022. |

Layers of sweet red fruit, flowers and spices blossom effortlessly from the 2008 Fontalloro. The intensely saline finish that is present in the Rancia is found in Fontalloro as well. I am usually not the biggest fan of Fontalloro, but there is no denying the superb pedigree and sheer class of the 2008. This is a wonderfully, sophisticated, polished wine from Felsina. In 2008 the slightly drier microclimate at Fontalloro vis-a-vis Rancia is the main reason this wine is such a huge success in 2008. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2026.
VM 93 (7/2012): (100% sangiovese): Good full, deep red. Sexy nose offers bitter red cherry, raspberry, rose petal and a whiff of loam. Juicy, sweet and enticing, with lovely elegance and energy to the flavors of red fruits and candied ginger. Firm but harmonious tannins stand out on the rising, very pure finish. This essence of sangiovese is a remarkably successful wine in this vintage.

It’s full-bodied, with chocolate, licorice, and plums. The texture is very velvety. This is a wine in near perfect proportions. Best in four or five years.
WA 92 (8/2011): The 2008 Flaccianello (Sangiovese) emerges from the glass with attractive dark red fruit, tobacco, licorice, sweet spices and new leather. It is interesting to compare the Flaccianello with the Vigna del Sorbo. Here the oak influence is greater, which flattens some of the aromatic complexity, at least today, in favor of more textural sweetness and softness. The 2008 possesses terrific overall balance, length and harmony. This is a mid-weight style of Flaccianello with excellent acidity and bright prospects for developing in the bottle. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2028. |

Its 360-degree beauty shines comes through in terms of the intensity of the bouquet and the elegance of the mouthfeel. Again, super-finely textured tannins give the wine backbone and create a supporting structure for rich fruit flavors. There's just enough consistency here to fill the palate, yet the wine is never heavy or flat. The sweet, perfumed fruit typical of the 2008s here is evident in the glass. A rich, sumptuous wine, the 2008 Runcot is fabulous. The 2008 spent 45 months in new French oak, all of which it has handled with superb grace. The 2008 is very classic in style. It will require considerable patience, despite its deceptively medium-bodied structure. This is another dazzling wine from Maria-Theresa Mascarello. VM 93+ (10/2011): (from fruit picked beginning on October 18, about a month later than the 2007 harvest): Good medium red. Aromas of sour cherry, licorice, menthol and savory soil. Silky, juicy and intense but quite imploded and understated today. In fact, this is brutally closed, with substantial tongue-coating tannins that will only be resolved with long cellaring. The very long, slowly building finish shows lovely aromatic dark berry character and excellent lift. I'd forget this one for a decade. |

| VM 94+ (8/2010): The 2008 Montevetrano is almost impossibly young at this stage. Loaded with the essence of black cherry liqueur, minerals and spices, the wine conquers the palate with layers of richly structured fruit. The 2008 is full of raw, vinous energy, yet it is possible to get a sense of the brilliant future that lies ahead from the way the wine continues to develop beautifully in the glass. In 2008 climactic conditions were much more normal than 2007, with a healthy alternation of temperatures that favored the development of expressive aromatics and firm structure. WA 92 (6/2013): The estate’s 2008 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova is bold, frank and direct. Mocha, plums, black cherries, savory herbs and flowers are some of the notes that take shape in the glass. Overall, the 2008 is a fairly mid-weight Tenuta Nuova, with less structure than the 2006 or 2007, but with plenty of early appeal. The dense, layered finish is highly appealing. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020.
VM 90+ (8/2013): (15% alcohol): Bright, full ruby-red. Red cherry, red licorice and pungent herbs on the nose. Supple, sweet and silky on entry, with reticent but pure red berry and flint flavors complicated by fresh herbs, flowers and a wild element of underbrush; firmed by solid acidity. Finishes with substantial building tannins and serious structure. Very suave and classically dry, but I would have liked a little more fruit for a higher score. The bottle's label carries a 30th vendemmia designation. |

JS 99 (8/2011): Opulent and complex, with dark fruits such as plums and blackberries. Milk chocolate. Dried herbs too. Black olives. Stunning nose. Full bodied, with firm and chewy tannins, but a very creamy texture, and lots of milk chocolate, berry and mineral character. It goes on for minutes. Clear and powerful. Savory and salty. One of the best Massetos ever.
WA 97+ (6/2012): The 2008 Masseto is another huge wine. It boasts tons of energy in a tense, inward style I can only describe as implosive, as if the wine is holding back all of its energy. A deep core of black fruit, grilled herbs, licorice and new leather emerges from time to time, but the tannins are still imposing. There is no shortage of pedigree. I fully expect the 2008 to develop into one of the great Massetos. Needless to say, it will be interesting to taste the 2008 in vertical tastings in the future. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2033. |

WA 93+ (8/2011): The 2008 Galatrona is intriguing. Layers of espresso, sweet herbs, mocha and rich, dark fruit emerge from this beautifully-delineated wine. The 2008 isn’t a blockbuster Galatrona, rather it comes across as quite classic in its mid-weight personality and Bordeaux-like flavor profile. I would not at all be surprised to see this wine develop beautifully over the next few years. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020.
VM 91 (8/2010): (100% merlot, aged for 18 months in new barriques; 33 g/l dry extract; 14% alcohol) Inky-ruby. Intensely aromatic nose combines dark plum, a whiff of coffee reduction and herbal notes of bay leaf and oregano. Then fleshy, ripe and sweet, with archetypical merlot flavors of cassis and minerals enlivened by a lovely violet note on the concentrated, long finish. The tannins are just a touch rustic for an even higher score, but this is a very impressive, big wine of considerable purity. |

WA 96 (6/2012): The 2008 Percarlo is holding back serious power in reserve. A tightly wound core of fruit hits the palate as this energetic, vibrant wine shows off its taut personality. The 2008 needs time to resolve some of its inner tension, but it is strikingly beautiful just the same. Today it reminds me of the 1996, but with more kick and depth. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2033.
VM 90+ (7/2012): (100% sangiovese; 14.5% alcohol): Deep ruby. Earth and tar notes complicate deep red cherry and herbs on the nose. Enters smooth, rich and suave, with aromatic bay leaf and clove notes accenting and lifting the flavors of red cherry and earth. Finishes with youthfully chewy tannins and hints of vanilla and iron. Certainly a very good Percarlo, but I don't find the depth of the best vintages. However, since this wine always seems to gain in flesh and volume with bottle aging, I tend to give it the benefit of the doubt with regard to future development. |

WA 96+ (10/2011): The 2006 Barolo Riserva Runcot is a huge, structured wine bursting at the seams with fruit. The French oak (100% new) is beautifully integrated. Today the wine is understandably quite reticent but its pedigree is hard to miss. Flowers, licorice and minerals linger on the finish. The 2006 Runcot needs time, most likely lots of it. Let me just say I can’t wait to taste this powerhouse once it has had more time in bottle. It is a dazzling effort. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031.
VM 94+ (10/2011): (this spent 45 days on its skins, and was then aged entirely in new French barriques for 40 months with minimal racking; Grasso's other two Barolos are aged in 25-liter Slavonian oak casks): Good deep red. Expressive aromas of cherry, redcurrant, raspberry, violet, mocha and spicy oak, with savory and leathery nuances. Broad, dense and very dry, with lovely inner-palate minerality. There's excellent ripeness here but today the finish of this uncompromisingly dry, classic Barolo is cut off by its big, dusty tannins. "This vintage was second-best to 2008," noted Gianluca Grasso, "with 96% phenolic maturity."

WA 97 (4/2017): The 2008 Bolgheri Sassicaia is a wine without a winemaker. The last vintage made by Giacomo Tachis was 2007 and incoming enologist Graziana Grassini claims 2009 as her first vintage. Within the context of this retrospective, the 2008 vintage opens a new chapter, because it is the first wine to show evident tertiary definition and complexity. In fact, the wine performs beautifully with an exalted performance and ethereal aromas. They include cassis, wild berry, crushed mineral, licorice, petrol and grilled herb. This wine is really coming together now and is entering a very exciting moment in its drinking life. It boasts finesse, elegance and grace. Yet, it also shows unmistakable richness and structure that gives the wine an enormous presence in terms of mouthfeel. This was one of the top highlights of the retrospective.
JS 97 (6/2016): This is the best young Sassicaia in years. It's the new 1988, which was great, and sometimes better than the legendary 1985. What incredible aromas here with blueberries, spices, licorice, plums. Graphite too. Subtle and complex. Full and silky with a beautiful texture of fine tannins and an ultra-fine finish. So beautiful now but will be much better in 2015. Owner Niccolo Incisa della Rocchetta says that Sassicaia is always great in years that end with eight: 1958, 1968, 1978, 1988, 1998, and 2008.
VM 96 (8/2011): The 2008 Sassicaia is a rich, deep wine imbued with notable class in its black cherries, plums, grilled herbs, minerals and smoke. The 2008 is a decidedly buttoned-up, firm Sassicaia that is currently holding back much of its potential, unlike the 2006 and 2007, both of which were far more obvious wines. Readers who can afford to wait will be treated to a sublime wine once this settles down in bottle. Muscular, firm tannins frame the exquisite finish in this dark, implosive Sassicaia. JS 98 (9/2011): This is a phenomenal wine with blackberries, black olives, orange, and spices on the nose and palate. It's full-bodied and super silky with a very long and rich finish, yet powerful and bright. Not heavy. It remains so intense and structured. I can’t make up my mind for the moment if I like it better than the 2007, but it could be in the long run. So long and racy. Incredible. Pure Merlot. Give it five to six years of bottle age.
WA 96 (8/2011): The 2008 Redigaffi is impeccable in its elegance and polish. Dark cherries, licorice, espresso and mocha meld together beautifully in this textured, fleshy wine. Despite its sophisticated personality, there is plenty of tannin lurking underneath to provide support. This is a beautifully round, opulent, yet impeccably balanced wine of the highest level. Smoke, minerals, licorice and tar wrap around the intense finish. Redigaffi remains a unique and powerful expression of Merlot from the Tuscan coast. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2028.
VM 95 (10/2010): (100% merlot) Bright, deep ruby. Exhilarating nose combines wild berries, smoky plum, sage and flowers. Wonderfully dense and sweet, with a captivating light touch to the flavors of ripe black and red fruits, coffee and sweet spices. The wine's oak-derived vanilla is a bit more present today than in most young vintages of Redigaffi, but the terrific core of ripe acidity really extends the finish and contributes lift. The tannins are extremely smooth and fine-grained. Much less herbal than the '07, this is a great vintage for Redigaffi. |

A restrained, ultra-fresh and distinctly floral nose reflects notes of various white orchard fruit aromas, lemon zest and discreet wood toast. There is outstanding volume to the rich and succulent broad-shouldered flavors that possess focused power on the beautifully long and sappy mineral-infused finish that is shaped by citrus-tinged acidity. This isn't quite as structured as the Chevalier, but it too is promising. Drink 2028+. |
