VM 93 (7/2014): Good bright medium red. Rich aromas of raspberry, red cherry, licorice, sweet pipe tobacco and violet. Rich, layered and sweet, boasting superb definition and depth to its fleshy but vibrant red berry, sweet spice and licorice flavors. This big, broad, perfumed wine finishes with excellent clarity and floral lift. Another standout Brunello from this producer and easily one of the year's best. I'd enjoy it within the next ten years, but I suspect it has the structure to age for longer than that. Ian d'Agata.

Black cherries, menthol, spices and new leather are some of the nuances that flow as this expansive Brunello literally covers every inch of the palate. VM 93+ (2/2016): The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is rich, sensual and inviting. Wonderfully open-knit and polished, the 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is one of the most intriguing wines of the year. High-toned aromatics, with a touch of volatile acidity, give the wine much of its unique personality. Macerated cherries, licorice, hard candy new leather and mint are all pushed forward. Readers should expect a somewhat eccentric Brunello. I have seen Brunellos with elevated volatile acidity develop into spectacular wines with years in bottle, but readers should know what they are getting into. Antonio Galloni.
WA 93 (3/2016): The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino offers an immediate sense of generosity and openness that makes it attractive on first impact. In this regard, 2011 is very different from the slow-to-reveal-itself 2010 vintage that proceeds it. Bold tones of dark cherry, plum, spice and resin rise to the top with enthusiasm and intensity. The wine holds back nothing. It shows a velvety texture that is rich and enduring. All the while, this Brunello remains faithful to its time honored traditions and its territorial roots.
JS 93 (2/2016): Savory and delicious with balance and finesse for a 2011 Brunello. Very fine indeed. Medium to full body, fresh and clean finish. Love the plum, berry and hazelnut character. A delicious successor to an superb 2010. This is the first vintage of the new owners of this fine estate. Drink or hold. |

VM 96 (11/2020): You can lose yourself in the bouquet of the 2016 Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino. At one moment, the 2016 shows crushed cherries with autumnal spice; the next, it’s exotic florals and candied orange peels, and at another time flowery undergrowth, white smoke and wild berries. It’s unbelievably soft and pure, lifting the wine through saline-minerals, as sweet notes of cherry and raspberry begin to slowly saturate, yet what they leave behind is youthfully grippy tannins. With how structured the 2016 is today, it’s still enjoyable due to nervous acids and notes of sour citrus, which keep the expression fresh. The 2016 Poggio di Sotto Brunello is really a terrific effort and a classic in the making. Eric Guido.
JS 94 (10/2020): A chewy, dusty-textured red with lots of intense tannins and fresh blue fruit, as well as black cherries and some orange-peel undertones. It’s full-bodied and tight with firm tannins at the end. Closed. Give it another two or three years to come around. Try after 2023. |

JD 96 (3/2023): Beautifully detailed, the 2018 Brunello Di Montalcino delivers pure layers of ripe cherry, raspberry, incense, stony earth, roses, and fresh herbs. Medium-bodied and silky in texture, with ultra-fine tannins, it has a gorgeous energy without edges, with a long arch of ripe raspberry, wild strawberry, herbes de Provence, wet stone, and fresh rose petal. It is incredibly long on the palate, and it almost feels as if the wine never ends. This will be a stunning wine to drink 2026-2046. Audrey Frick.

This finishes with impressive structure for the vintage, still lively yet classically dry, leaving nuances of tart berries offset by a burst of inner sweetness that punctuates quite well. This was a very difficult vintage with a massive amount of rain in August that made vineyard work very difficult, but also extremely important. That said, the team at Poggio did a fantastic job finding balance. Do make sure to give the 2018 a good amount of time, as I followed this for three days, through which it only got better and better. It can be compared to the cool 2013 and 2016 vintages that both required an extra five or six years before they started to shine. However, there's no escaping the power that remains just under the surface. You feel it budding and yearning to break free. Dark fruit aromas fold into crushed stone, grilled rosemary and blue flower. It's fun to taste this wine next to the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva because you really see how much further this vintage will require in the cellar. Both wines remain tight and nervous at this point but are full of potential. Drink between 2030-2055.
JD 98+ (2/2024): I was able to taste the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino three times for this report, and it’s one of the great wines of the vintage. It takes on a bit more muscular style for the Poggio di Sotto estate, but it retains the DNA of the estate at large with its outstanding clarity. It’s medium ruby-colored and reveals notes of pure cherry, anise, wildflowers, wet stone, and tea leaf. Structured and long on the palate, it has ripe, chiseled tannins, a balanced spine of acidity, and notes of salted orange through the finish, with a long-lasting perfume. Its transparency, balanced with its complexity, makes this one of the most intriguing wines, and if stored properly, it will only improve with time in the cellar. Drink 2027-2047. Audrey Frick.

This is feminine yet deep and textural, with ripe plums and black cherries motivated by brisk acidity. Violet inner florals and licorice hints form toward the close. The 2019 leaves a salty mineral staining to mingle with fine-grained tannins and spice, as it finishes with incredible length, yet still so fresh. This is incredibly youthful and inward today, but the potential is off the charts. I expect the 2019 to put on some weight and blossom over the next five to ten years. Glorious. JD 98 (2/2024): Almost the same color as the Rosso from 2010, the 2010 Brunello Di Montalcino Riserva delivers aromas of pure red cherries, eau de vie, and iron-rich earth. Mouthwatering and saline, with a sanguine texture and notes of dried orange and raspberry fruit, it lasts for ages and floats off the palate, with its tannins becoming finer on the finish. WA 97 (3/2016): Poggio di Sotto has released one of the wines of the vintage. The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva fulfills the promise of its category. Brunello Riservas are aged for six long years before their release, thus insuring extra intensity and complexity. This wine delivers both in abundance. The bouquet is more sophisticated and deeper than the Annata and in addition to dark fruit and blackberry, this wine shows an extra dose of clove and spice. In the mouth, the wine is smooth and silky, but it also shows impressive power and length. This Riserva will deliver its best performance for those who are willing to wait ten years or more.
VM 96 (2/2016): The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is rich, powerful and explosive. Dark cherry, plum, spice, menthol and a host of balsamic, mentholated notes flesh out in the glass. As is often the case with the Poggio di Sotto wines, the Riserva has noticeable volatile acidity, but here, is a thread in a very rich fabric with many, many strands. In 2010, the Poggio di Sotto Riserva is unusually dense and virile. It will be interesting to see if it gains a bit more finesse over time. (Drink between 2020-2030). Antonio Galloni. |

WA 96+ (2/2017): This wine floored me. The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a stunning beauty and a wine well worth the attention (if you can afford its lofty pricing aspirations). Thankfully, the beauty of the contents will help alleviate some of the sticker shock. This is a supple and silky expression with an infinite array of Sangiovese-based aromas. You'll recognize wild cassis, forest floor, autumnal leaf, button mushroom, grilled herb, rosemary, balsam herb and red rose petal. The effect is fragrant and delicate. The mouthfeel is equally ethereal and nuanced. With only 3,500 bottles made, not many of us will have the luxury of trying this beautiful wine. And, that is really too bad.
JS 94 (10/2017): Fresh and vivid aromas of cherry and flower with cream undertones. Full body, firm and very silky with a beautiful intensity and precision. Excellent winemaking here. Drink or hold.
VM 94-97 (2/2016): A total pleasure bomb, Poggio di Sotto's 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva races across the palate with layers of intense, perfumed fruit and striking aromatics. Macerated dark cherry, spice, menthol and deeply spiced layers built to the huge, intense finish. The typical Poggio di Sotto volatile acidity is pretty much buried by the sheer density of the fruit. Best of all, the Riserva remains incredibly fresh and saline, which is so remarkable for the year. Antonio Galloni. |

WA 97 (1/2019): Poggio di Sotto reaches lofty new heights with the 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva. I spent a lot of time studying this wine and I tasted it at different intervals and from different bottles. Fruit ripened slowly over a long period of time over the course of this cool vintage, resulting in bright acidity and a firm tannic backbone. This wine follows the classic promise of traditional Brunello that, above all, softens and improves with age. This wine will meet those important goals. The bouquet offers evolved tones of dried cherry and crème de cassis with lovely spice, tar, licorice and balsam herb that culminate in increased complexity and persistence. I also taste some of the sharpness of the vintage, although it should subside with time. That point of tannic thorniness (that I associate with 2013) is the only thing preventing this wine from scoring even higher. Only 2,700 bottles were produced.
VM 94 (3/2019): Luminous deep red. Scented aromas of raspberry and blueberry lifted by violet, incense and cinnamon. Wonderfully sweet and penetrating but light on its feet, showcasing real class and energy, not to mention powerful minerality to the densely packed flavors of red berries, pomegranate, tobacco and wild herbs. Finishes very long, suave and subtle, with tannins that are very fine.
JS 90 (1/2019): Quite brashly pitched oak and spicy wood notes here. The palate has a thread of cedar and berry flavor and a herbal kick at the finish. Drink now. |

| JD 98 (3/2021): The 2015 Brunello Riserva is austere upon opening and requires air to fully express its potential this early. It is perfumed and translucent, with raspberry fruit leather, black licorice, and rose petal. The palate is structured with drying tannins and mouthwatering acidity, noted by violets, dried herbs and crisp cherry fruit. The warmth of the 2015 vintage is present, though it remains refreshing, tension-driven, and persistent. The 2015 Riserva was aged in large Slavonian barrels for 52 months, and only 1300 bottles were produced. It is a wonderful and immensely pleasurable wine that will be a joy to revisit if the unlikely opportunity should ever arrive. Audrey Frick. |

WA 96+ (6/2012): The 2009 Solaia is one of the clear standouts of the vintage. Freshly cut flowers, raspberries, spices, mint and licorice burst from the glass as this fabulous, viscerally thrilling wine shows off its pure class. Today the oak is a bit prominent, but that won’t be an issue by the time the wine is ready to drink. In one of my blind tastings, the 2009 Solaia was flat-out great. There is no shortage of pedigree here. The 2009 has calmed down a little from its youth, when it was a much more exuberant wine, and has now begun to close down in bottle. Solaia is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese and 5% Cabernet Franc from a single parcel within the Antinori family’s Tignanello vineyard. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029.
JS 96 (8/2012): A Solaia with lots of currants, berries and milk chocolate yet reserved and focused. Full body, with refined tannins and an alluring finish. Needs at least two or three years to come together. Can't decide if I like this better than the superb 2008. Better in 2015.
VM 96+ (12/2013): he 2009 Antinori Solaia is similar to the 2007 in its volume and richness, but it is less extroverted. This is another gorgeous Solaia that will drink well pretty much during its entire life. The warm year yielded a racy Solaia with no hard edges and fabulous overall balance. |

WA 94 (6/2012): The 2009 Tignanello is quite beautiful. Cedar, graphite, sweet herbs, licorice and leather add complexity to a core of highly expressive red fruits. The 2009 impresses for its energy, drive and focus. Today, the 2009 comes across as slightly understated relative to many recent vintages, especially 2007 and 2008. There is a silkiness and polish that is reminiscent of the 2004. Tignanello is 75% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc from vineyards in San Casciano Val di Pesa, one of the most evocative hillsides in all of Italy. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029.
VM 92 (9/2012): Bright red-ruby. Ripe aromas of sweet red cherries macerated in alcohol, cedar, cinnamon and pepper. Suave and seamless, with soft, almost-overripe flavors of redcurrant jam, red plum syrup, stewed red plum and tobacco leaf. A very distinctive and much creamier than usual Tignanello, finishing with supple tannins and excellent length. Obviously the product of a warmer year, and though this Outstanding Tignanello is a touch less refined than some recent standout vintages, it's hard to argue with its sweet, soft style and early drinking appeal. No need to cellar this too long. |

WA 93 (2/2014): The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino Annata is a beautiful wine laced with ethereal balsam tones, licorice, cola, dark fruit and forest floor. The acidity is evident but well-integrated within the thick textural richness of the wine. It closes slowly and quietly with a surprising flurry of delicate floral notes that pop up at the end. This well-built wine will hold for many years. Drink: 2017-2030.
VM 92 (7/2014): Vivid full red. Red cherry, raspberry, violet, minerals and licorice on the pure, captivating nose. Penetrating, savory and sweet, with terrific energy and purity to the sappy red fruit and mineral flavors. The vibrant, pure finish is firm and gripping but not particularly tannic. Tasted four different times since January of this year: I scored one bottle 93, two bottles 92 and one 90, so I'll go with the median score. Another very successful, archetypically pure Sangiovese from Biondi-Santi.
JS 91 (10/2014): A little austere but shows pretty dried-cherry and berry character. Very firm and racy. Medium to full body, fresh acidity and a bright, clean finish. Classic Biondi-Santi shy and firm style. Give it two or three years to soften. |

WA 96 (6/2015): Because Monfortino was not produced this vintage, the 2009 Barolo Cascina Francia benefits from the extra fruit that would have otherwise gone toward the world's most celebrated Barolo Riserva. I tasted the 2009 Barolo Cascina Francia in barrel two years ago and am delighted by its steady evolution. This is a wine of sophisticated intensity and persuasion. The bouquet peels back to reveal dark fruit, licorice, tar and dried rose. The vintage was warm, resulting in extra plumpness and roundness in terms of mouthfeel. The style is slightly more immediate, but this is a great aging wine nonetheless.
JS 95 (1/2014): This has a wonderful long and beautiful style with super fine and persistent tannins. It is full yet so elegant. The perfumes are of roses and dark fruits. It's savory on the palate. Roberto Conterno made no Monfortino this vintage so declassified the entire production into this wine as he did in 2007. Drink or hold.
VM 94 (11/2013): Good bright medium red. Deep, expressive nose offers strawberry, camphor, marzipan and earthy minerality. Like liquid silk on entry, then very rich, ripe and sweet in the middle, offering complex notes of red berries, roasted herbs, leather and smoked meat. Finishes sappy and very long, with lush tannins and serious breadth. The tannins are more than supported by the wine's strong mid-palate material. JS 95 (8/2012): A structured red with polished tannins and subtle vanilla, chocolate and currant character on the nose and palate. Full body, with integrated tannins and a compacted palate. Builds on the palate. Muscular and intense. Needs until 2015 to soften. Try it then.
VM 94+ (7/2012): (100% sangiovese): Deep red-ruby. Enticing aromas of plum, cherry and graphite, with hints of tar and wild herbs. Then sweet but not overripe or heavy on the palate, offering bright flavors of plum and redcurrant. Plenty of soil character and fine-grained tannins on the the multilayered, nicely structured finish. This wine magically combines sweetness, flesh and refinement--no small feat--and is an amazingly pure example of sangiovese.
WA 94 (6/2012): The 2009 Flaccianello della Pieve is a bit of a shock to the palate after 20+ older vintages. Still, it is impossible to miss the wine’s striking purity and finesse. Today the 2009 is a bit of a brute, but it should mellow out over the next 5-7 years as the tannins start to soften. Firm tannins frame layers of ripe, juicy fruit in this young, extroverted Flaccianello. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029. |

WA 94+ (6/2013): The 2009 Barolo (aged three years in botte grande and one year in bottle) opens with a crystalline, ruby color and shows extreme focus and precision. Rosehip, forest berry, wild mint, lightly toasted pine nut, dried ginger and underbrush all appear on the ever-changing bouquet. The wine is extremely finessed and silky on the close with beautiful menthol freshness at the end. In Barolo tradition, fruit was normally sourced from many vineyards. The concept of single vineyards is relatively new. In keeping with tradition, this Barolo sees fruit from the Canubbi, San Lorenzo, Rue, and Rocche di La Morra vineyards. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2035.
VM 93 (5/2013): Mascarello fans, especially those cellaring some of the estate's recent vintages, will find much to like in the 2009 Barolo, a wine that should drink nicely pretty much upon release. A model of delicacy and finesse, the 2009 graces the palate with soft fruit and silky, polished tannins. All the elements are in the right place. Sweet floral and tobacco notes add complexity on the finish. I don't see the 2009 joining the ranks of the truly great years here, but it is nevertheless an attractive wine.
VM 93 (12/2013): Good bright red. Cherry liqueur, raspberry and red licorice on the nose. Then surprisingly juicy in the mouth for this warm year, showing intense red fruit and mineral flavors accented by blood orange and spices. At once silky and light on its feet. this very elegant and refined 2009 Barolo finishes with suave tannins and enticing spicy lift. |

| WA 94 (6/2016): A landmark wine, the 2009 Barolo Monprivato does not disappoint. The wine shows a medium garnet color and offers a full bouquet of red rose, pressed flowers, wild berries, spice, tar and licorice. Some distant white truffle also makes a subtle appearance at the back. The mouthfeel is absolutely polished and clean with silky tannins, balanced acidity and firm textural support. This is a lovely edition of Barolo Monprivato to store in your cellars ten years or more. |

JS 98 (10/2014): I have always been impressed with the depth and grace to this wine since I tasted it from barrel. It's full-bodied with super integrated tannins and so much intense currant, berry character. A classic quality in this pure merlot wonder; feels like Pomerol from a top year like 2009. Try in 2017.
VM 96 (9/2012): Good full ruby. Superripe, pure aromas of blackberry, cassis, violet, minerals, milk chocolate and exotic spices. Superconcentrated, rich and seamless, offering explosive sweetness but also great verve, thanks to bright acidity that provides wonderful lift and clarity to the blackberry, blueberry and black cherry flavors. Finishes with ultra-suave tannins and a kaleidoscope of violet and Oriental spice flavors. A very great Masseto from a hot year, when I would have expected the merlot to suffer a bit. But unlike in 2003, when it wasn't just hot but dry as well, Masseto's unique microclimate allowed the merlot to avoid major stress in 2009. As good and refined as the Ornellaia is in 2009, I think the Masseto has an extra layer of complexity and depth. Ian d'Agata.
WA 94+ (6/2012): The 2009 Masseto bursts from the glass with dark red berries, blackberries, flowers, licorice and tar. It shows lovely up-front juiciness and expressive inner perfume in a surprisingly accessible style for this wine. Like the Ornellaia, the 2009 Masseto has quite a bit of freshness, although it, too, is medium-bodied in structure. In this vintage the Ornellaia team was especially selective and only used part of the three vineyards that typically go into Masseto. I have been fortunate to taste every vintage of Masseto, most more than once recently. Masseto has a great track record for aging, even in the smallest, least promising of vintages. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029. |

WA 92+ (2/2014): From Giulio Salvioni’s La Cerbaiola estate, the 2009 Brunello di Montalcino is a fantastic wine with an impressive degree of darkness and broad aromas of Indian spice and ripe fruit. The 2008 Brunello presents a more voluptuous style than is customary with the tradition-minded Salvioni. The wine shows a good degree of baby fat that should serve it well as it ages over the next decade or longer. Drink: 2017-2028.
VM 91 (5/2016): The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino is one of the most immediate and one-dimensional wines in this tasting. There is good depth and intensity in the glass, but much less of the layered quality and nuance of the very best years. Still, the 2009 remains young, with little in the way of aromatic development. All things considered, the 2009 is an excellent wine for satisfying the Salvioni urge while some of the more important surrounding vintages continue to develop in the cellar. The 2009 is simply glorious from the very first taste. A kick of Sangiovese acidity gives the wine its lift and vibrancy on the finish. This is a great showing. Carbonaione is 100% Sangiovese (Lamole clone) grown on the hillsides of Greve. The wine spent 15 months in 350-liter oak barrels, 50% new. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2029. |

| WA 92+ (8/2011): The 2009 Guidalberto flows across the palate with layers of radiant red fruit. This is another striking, supple Guidalberto loaded with personality. Stylistically it is quite close to the 2007, but with perhaps a touch less body but equally silky, polished tannins. Freshly cut roses, spices and a burst of pure red berries add nuance on the finish. Guidalberto is no longer the stunning value it once was, but it is quite gorgeous in this vintage just the same. This is easily one of the best vintages I can recall tasting. Guidalberto is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. |

JS 98 (12/2012): This is fantastic. Intense and super long on the palate. It's insanely complex yet subtle with so much going on, with a beautiful balance and tension. It is full and powerful with a big juicy character that goes on for minutes. Muscular yet covered with pretty fruit. Elegance with force. Hard not to drink. But better in 2016.
VM 97+ (9/2012): (80% cabernet sauvignon and 20% cabernet franc): Bright full ruby. Extremely primary and pure, offering sharply defined cassis, violet and mineral flavors of great class. The perfectly integrated acidity and a vibrant floral character from the cabernet franc give the middle palate terrific lift. Though very ripe in its flavor profile, this wine conveys a rare lightness of touch that is typical of Sassicaia but rare for this vintage on the Tuscan Coast. Finishes with noble tannins and outstanding palate-staining length. For all its creamy power and charm, I really like this wine's balance and the subtle delivery of its complex flavors. I have tasted every vintage of Sassicaia on countless occasions and, other than the legendary 1985, I have no doubt that this is one of the two or three best Sassicaias at a similar stage of development. Though the 2009 won't surpass the once-in-a-lifetime 1985, it is starting out its life in bottle with almost the same perfectly balanced, opulent creamy texture and depth of that incredible wine, which I remembertasting both in Rome and in Tuscanyimmediately upon release. In fact, that wine was so good that even thoughI was still auniversity student (and thus on a studentbudget), it was the firsttime in my lifeI ever bought a full case. If I were a university student today, I'd do the same with the 2009, even though the price of Sassicaia is far higher today. WA 96+ (4/2017): The 2009 Bolgheri Sassicaia is the richest and darkest edition in recent memory. This super-charged Sassicaia boasts enormous power and concentration thanks to its impressive phenolic foundation. Black currant and blackberry confit are followed by spice, leather, tar, road paving and black truffle. It shows preliminary tertiary signs with licorice and crushed mineral. The wine wraps thickly over the palate delivering tight textural firmness and integrated structure. You taste the sweetness of the fruit and the depth of the oak tannins. No matter how you approach it, this wine scores very high on the intensity meter. For the record: Tenuta San Guido General Manager Carlo Paoli expressed concern about the integrity of his sample, but I remained extremely pleased by the gorgeous wine before me. |

JS 98 (12/2012): This is fantastic. Intense and super long on the palate. It's insanely complex yet subtle with so much going on, with a beautiful balance and tension. It is full and powerful with a big juicy character that goes on for minutes. Muscular yet covered with pretty fruit. Elegance with force. Hard not to drink. But better in 2016.

JS 96 (8/2011): This is rich and powerful, with loads of fruit, lots of licorice and spices. Full and very velvety . Wonderful richness and balance. What a finish. Sweet and long. Incredible. Pure Merlot. Best in 2014.
VM 95 (6/2012): The 2009 Redigaffi bursts onto the palate with an exciting melange of blackberries, grilled herbs, flowers, mint, rosemary and spices. It is a powerful, juicy Merlot loaded with fruit, but there is also more than enough structure to provide support. Dark notes of tar, incense and smoke add complexity on the finish. JS 94 (2/2014): A silky, fine 2009 Brunello with light berry, chocolate and prune character. Medium to full body. Ultra-fine tannins. A wonderfully crafted Valdicava along the same lines as the excellent 2004. Drink or hold.
WA 92+ (2/2014): Vincenzo Abbruzzese’s 2009 Brunello di Montalcino is a dense and full-bodied rendition that delivers an enormously floral bouquet of crushed rose petal and dried potpourri with background tones of cinnamon stick, root beer and caramelized brown sugar. Past vintages of this wine have shown great power and structure in the mouth, but the 2009 vintage is veiled and nuanced instead. There’s a silky and tight quality to the tannin backed by a long, polished feel. The wine never feels bulky or dense. It will be interesting to see how it evolves, but if you don’t want to wait, it can also be consumed in the near-term. Drink: 2016-2024.
VM 88 (5/2014): The estate's 2009 Brunello di Montalcino initially offers good depth, but like so many wines in this vintage, it lacks persistence and is also quite forward. Dark red cherry, plum, smoke and tobacco notes open up in the glass before the tannins take hold of the palate. My sense is that the fruit will fade before the tannins soften. The 2009 is best enjoyed sooner rather than later. |
