WA 95 (6/2013): The 2008 Barolo Aeroplanservaj puts on a whole different act. Here, the emphasis is on elegance and finesse. The opulence and massiveness of the wine fits in with the Clerico philosophy, but unlike the Barolo Briccotto its strongest cards are played with a more subtle strategy. The aromas of black fruit and spice are wrapped a bit tighter, and the wine shows some nervous tension in the glass that needs to soften with age. I loved those delicate sprigs of mint and wild flower that somehow emerge from the inner depths of this rock-solid wine. Terrible mudslides in 2009 damaged the Badarina vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba and Clerico did not produce the Aeroplanservaj that year. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2030.
VM 94+ (12/2013): (from 35-year-old vines in Badarina in Serralunga): Good deep red. Medicinal aromas and flavors of dark raspberry, cherry, menthol and tobacco; very Serralunga. At once suave and penetrating, offering terrific definition and inner-mouth aromatic character. Powerful acidity is keeping this wine tightly wrapped today, but it has buns of steel to support a graceful evolution in bottle. Incidentally, there's no 2009 Aeroplan Servaj due to a landslide that occurred during a huge rain storm in April of 2009, which also cost Clerico 15 rows of Ciabot Mentin.
JS 94 (7/2013): A wine with soft and velvety tannins with plenty of fruit. This coats your palate and caresses. Full and round with beautiful ripe fruit. Better in 2015 but so delicious now. |

JS 98 (11/2016): Wonderful aromas of ripe fruits, from plums to blackberries. Wet earth and fresh black truffles too. Full body, chewy and powerful tannins, clean and focused. A wonderfully balanced and rich Barolo. Clerico does it great in 2011. Drink in 2019.
WA 95 (6/2016): The Domenico Clerico 2011 Barolo Aeroplan Servaj boasts an almost unreal level of richness and intensity. You feel the heat and power of the vintage, but the wine never feels jammy or flat. In fact, it moves across the palate with elegance, power and an impressive sense of balance. At its core, this Barolo reveals a tightly knit textural fabric based on good acidic integration and smoothly polished tannins. This wine shows no rough edges and it promises a long bottle evolution. |

WA 95 (10/2006): My favorite wine has typically been the Ciabot Mentin Ginestra, which comes from vines planted at 400 meters with a south to southeast exposure, which gives the wine its characteristic explosive aromas. The Pajana comes from a vineyard at 300 meters in altitude, with a due south exposure, and as would be expected, it is less perfumed on the nose, but rounder and lusher on the palate. Clerico’s Percristina is produced from old vines planted in the south-facing Mosconi cru. Stylistically I find it more similar to the Pajana, though the older vines give this wine a more concentrated profile along with heady, exotic aromas and flavors. The richly-colored 2001 Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra opens with an unmistakable Ginestra nose of menthol, eucalyptus, spices and minerals. It is dense and structured, showing plenty of ripe dark cherry fruit, licorice, tar and toasted oak flavors, with exceptional length and substance on the palate, and closing with an inviting, beautiful, lingering finish that makes you want to come back to the wine time and again. Clerico’s Ciabot Mentin Ginestra was one of the first Barolos that really captivated my attention and for me it remains this producer’s most representative wine. It is a superb achievement and one of the highlights of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021.
VM 94 (12/2004): Good medium red. Exotic, exhilarating aromas of sappy red berry liqueur and woodsmoke. Wonderfully sweet on entry, then superripe and liqueur-like in the middle palate, with an utterly suave texture over firm supporting spine. Finishes impressively long and sweet, with serious but noble tannins. There's nothing especially austere or forbidding about this extremely rich Barolo. |

WA 98 (2/2011): The 2007 Barolo Ciabot Mentin is one of the greatest wines I have ever tasted at this address. Deep, sensual layers of fruit flow from the glass as this full-throttle, intense Barolo reveals its profound, breathtaking personality. The 2007 shows tons of Ginestra nuance, but with extra dimensions to the fruit that literally covers every nook and cranny of the palate. Tasting this next to the 2006 is quite a comparison, as both wines are fabulous. Readers who can should be sure to own bottles of both. A side-by-side comparison is sure to be fascinating as the wines develop over the coming years. Astute readers will note the slight name change here, which is the result of new regulations that require the use of the historic vineyard name, in this case Ginestra, or a proprietary name. Call me nostalgic, but it is sad to see one of the iconic labels in Barolo disappear. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027.
VM 95 (10/2011): Dark medium red color. Less fruity on the nose today than the Pajana, hinting at menthol and minerals. Less rich and sweet too, in a distinctly backward style for the vintage. But there's Outstanding volume here and a hint of almost marzipan-like ripeness. Huge, broad tannins coat the incisors and front teeth. This will need extended cellaring.
JS 95 (5/2011): Full bodied, with velvety tannins and milk chocolate, and nutmeg character, with hints of hazelnut. Balanced and attractive. Best after 2015. |

VM 96 (10/2011): (Clerico is no longer using Ginestra on the label as of 2007: a change in the law recognized numerous crus, including Ginestra, but since many other growers use Ginestra on their labels, Clerico decided to name this wine after his own parcel): Medium red. Deeper and richer on the nose than the Pajana, with scents of redcurrant, mocha, dried flowers and earth. Wonderfully deep, layered and sweet; lush but with good limestone lift. This floods the palate with flavor and lingers with exceptional purity and persistence.
JS 93 (7/2012): Pretty nose of crushed dark fruits and dried lavender follow through to a full body, with chewy yet polished tannins and long structured finish. Racy. Best in 2016.
WA 92 (4/2012): The 2008 Barolo Ciabot Mentin is a little more interesting than the Pajana, but not much. It shows good energy and length, but never seems to truly blossom in the way the best vintages typically do. Flowers, mint, licorice and red berries are woven into the long, saline finish. Today the Ciabot Mentin comes across as compact, austere and lacking fruit. It shows good up-front energy, but then tails off abruptly on the mid-palate. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022. |

VM 95 (4/2009): The 2005 Barolo Pajana is off the charts. This deeply scented, layered Barolo possesses a striking bouquet of spices, tobacco, graphite, dark cherries and new leather that come together in a breathtaking display of elegance and power that is hard to fully capture in words. The tannins are, as usual, quite broad but they are also remarkably fine. In 2005 the Pajana shows breathtaking balance and harmony with a long, sensual finish. This is a superb effort from Domenico Clerico, and his team led by the mega-talented Massimo Conterno. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025.
VM 91+ (12/2009): Good deep red. Expressive aromas of raspberry, plum, strawberry, brown spices, mocha and chestnut, along with some sexy nutty oak. Sweet and pliant on entry but less harmonious than the young 2006: with moderate depth, the acids come across as less integrated and the slightly spiky tannins cut off the wine's fruit on the back. This will need a few years of patience. |

WA 96 (2/2011): The 2007 Barolo Pajana is a showstopper.
VM 94 (10/2011): Good full red. Perfumed, expressive aromas of redcurrant, cherry, flowers and graphite. Sweet and supple but youthfully imploded, showing excellent intensity to its deep red fruit flavors. Began a bit aggressively tannic but mellowed steadily with aeration. Finishes with terrific length. |

WA 94 (6/2016): Approachable and open even at this young stage, the 2011 Barolo Pajana offers ripe fruit, blackberry preserves, spice, tobacco, leather, cola and grilled rosemary. These layers come together with beautiful fruit integration and focus with supple richness at the back. The Barolo Pajana offers soft, silky tannins with a solid texture. It feels firm and powerful on the palate. |

WA 95 (6/2018): Pajana represents the lower end of the same site that produces fruit for the Barolo Ciabot Mentin. The soils are a bit looser here and the temperatures are just a few fractions higher at this site. Winemaking for the 2013 Barolo Pajana sees 20 days of skin maceration, and malolactic fermentation in this vintage was done in oak (otherwise that second fermentation occurs in stainless steel). The idea, of course, is to work without oxygen, but if the malolactic fermentations are slow, the wine goes into wood, as is the case here. The wine later ages in barrique for 16 months with another 16 months in botte grande. The bouquet offers delicate layers of mineral and flint with dark fruit and spice neatly folded into its thick texture. Both the Barolo Pajana and the Barolo Ciabot Mentin are released one year after their peers.
VM 93 (2/2018): Clerico's 2013 Barolo Pajana offers striking depth and textural richness to match its powerful, virile personality. Super-ripe red cherry, plum, sweet tobacco, cedar and spice resonate in the glass. All the elements meld together nicely in this very fine Pajana, though the tannins need time to soften. Hints of orange peel, Christmas cake and pomegranate add an exotic flair on the close. Antonio Galloni. |

VM 97+ (10/2011): (three years in new barriques, then one year in stainless steel): Good full red. Distinctly balsamic aromas of brown spices, tobacco, pepper, camphor and star anise. Thick on entry, then bright and sharply delineated in the mid-palate, with great energy and tactile minerality. This compellingly solid, chewy, classic Barolo finishes with great tannic force and grip and is virtually impossible to spit. An explosively long Barolo that will need long aging. Clerico can now keep these bottles in the special climate-controlled Per Cristina room in his new winery until he feels they're ready to drink.
VM 94 (4/2012): The 2005 Barolo Percristina is gorgeous. Mocha, dark cherries, flowers, spices and tar are some of the notes that flow from this beautifully delineated, layered Barolo. The 2005 impresses for its length, textural finesse and fabulous overall balance. Sweet red cherries, mint and flowers meld gracefully into the finish. In many years Percristina can be a very big wine, but the 2005 is much more finessed in style.
JS 93 (7/2013): Wonderful aromas of dark fruits, flowers and licorice follow to a full body, with fine tannins and a clean finish. It's drinking beautifully now. So much nut and fruit flavors at the finish. Still very young. Better in 2015. |

Dried or pressed flowers cede to cherry, blueberry, some red meat char and a light touch of cinnamon. My impression is that the dry extract from the oak ultimately plays a bigger role in the overall flavor profile, preserving its red fruit core nevertheless. The wine is very accessible in terms of mouthfeel, showing a comparatively thinner and shorter approach. With more time in the glass, it offers some of the white soil dust that is a standard Solaia signature. It will be released the first week of September. |

Burlotto 2017 Barolo (showing some of the gold medals and awards won for past vintages in the artwork depicted on the front label) offers a traditional and time-honored approach to Nebbiolo. It draws its fruit from various sites in Verduno. This is a soft and pliant expression that produces a long and fine succession of wild cherry, blue flower, crushed stone and anise-like aromas. You might also notice some rusty iron or candied apricot. This is a solid Barolo (with 10,000 bottles released) that vaunts a classic and traditional personality despite the hot vintage.
JD 93 (5/2021): The 2017 Barolo has soft floral aromatics of raspberry candy, fennel, and orange peel. The palate is medium-bodied, ripe and energetic, with cranberry, cinnamon, and peach as well as fine but present tannin. This is a wonderful entry wine from Burlotto. Drink 2021-2036. Audrey Frick.
VM 91 (2/2021): The 2017 Barolo is gorgeous. Beautifully perfumed and lifted, the 2017 is pure class. WA 94 (6/2021): Available in numbered bottles, the organic Cavallotto 2017 Barolo Bricco Boschis is a generous and fleshed out expression that opens to immediate aromas of cherry, wild plum and cassis. There are floral notes as well, and some spice, licorice and grilled herb. Like many of the Barolos I tasted from this vintage, the bouquet is accessible and generous now, but the wine is tannic and more austere in terms of mouthfeel, requiring extra bottle age. The hope is that both the bouquet and the palate will evolve at the same pace. From 45-year-old vines, this was a release of exactly 19,410 bottles and 999 magnums.
VM 93 (2/2021): The 2017 Barolo Bricco Boschis is superb. A rush of crushed raspberry, rose petals, mint, sweet spice and blood orange gives the 2017 its effusive, sexy personality. Medium in body and exceptionally polished, the 2017 is an absolute jewel of a wine. Many 2017s are nervy and in need of time to soften, but not the Bricco Boschis. All the elements are so well-balanced. If I was going to open a wine for someone who was not familiar with Barolo, I might very well open this. It’s impossible not to love the 2017 Bricco Boschis. WA 93 (6/2021): This wine is a sure bet from Elvio Cogno and such a steal. The 2017 Barolo Cascina Nuova delivers ample intensity and power. In this regard, it keeps faithfully in line with the expectations of a hot vintage that rendered more concentrated and sweeter fruit. However, the expert winemaking team at this estate has been able to manage any excesses or hints of over-ripeness. These are solid results with 20,000 bottles available.
JD 93 (5/2021): The 2017 Barolo Cascina Nuova is perfumed with ripe cherry, licorice, tar, and dried roses. The palate is ripe and refreshing, with a fairly classic build noted by red plum, tobacco leaf, and turned earth. This wine is beautiful and inviting out of the gates or drink 2022-2036. |

Silky, supple and radiant, with no hard edges and exceptional balance, the 2015 comes across as a bit shy today, and yet there is so much to like. WA 94 (6/2017): Boasting immediate depth and dimension, the 2015 Barbera d'Alba Vigna Francia is a commanding and confident wine. Tasted from barrel, the wine's color is dense and very dark. Youthful fruit tones of blackberry confit and black currant give the wine a solid aromatic foundation. That base creates an appropriate framework for ethereal notes of licorice, black olive, spice and campfire ash. It is very difficult to achieve this level of complexity with Barbera, but Roberto Conterno does so with flawless perfection. The mouthfeel is round and plump, but the opulence of the wine is also reined in by its lively acidity. |

The vines (planted a quarter century ago) sit at about 400 meters in elevation and water moisture is absorbed by the clay of Serralunga d'Alba. These conditions help to shape the wine's important tannins and elegant structure. Ultimately however, I found the 2017 Barolo Cerretta to be very much identified by its birth year. The wine offers a long interlude of intense brightness with sweet cherry, fragolino and wild rose, which soften any angular or hard edges put forth by the Nebbiolo grape. This 2017 vintage is exceedingly smooth and silky in character with a pliant or yielding quality that should serve it nicely as the wine completes its aging trajectory.

VM 93 (12/2021): An alluring, spicy and dusty mix of cherry and raspberry preserves, crushed stone and dusty flowers is lifted by cedar shavings and dried citrus peels as the majestic 2017 Brunello di Montalcino blossoms in the glass. This is fleshy yet delicate in feel, displaying pure ripe red berry fruit, nicely contrasted by salty mineral tones, and lacking only a bit of midpalate depth that might take it to the next level. It tapers off long while leaving the mouth watering for more, as a gentle tug of tannin slowly fades under rosy inner florals. Andrea Costanti didn’t produce a Riserva in 2017, and so all of that juice was used to try to bolster the Brunello. From what I’ve tasted, I’d say he succeeded. ERic Guido
WA 93 (2/2022): The Conti Costanti 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is nicely layered and concentrated, with an immediate delivery of black fruit, spice and potting soil. This vintage shows a savory personality more than it shows a sweet one, and the tannins are quite soft and velvety. This is an open-knit Brunello from a hot and dry vintage to drink in the medium-term. |

JD 93 (5/2021): The 2017 Barolo Cannubi, aged for 30 months in 20- to 25-hectoliter Slavonian oak, is from a small, 0.5-hectare parcel of Cannubi. It reveals perfumed notes of pure cherry, anise, violets, and leather. The palate is tightly wound and resinous with pine, bitter herbs, and orange pith, with angular structure. VM 94 (9/2020): The 2017 Chianti Classico Fontodi is a wine of extreme elegance that shows how much the house style has evolved here. A decade ago, in a warm year the Fontodi Chianti Classico would have been opulent, but these days proprietor Giovanni Manetti seeks finesse more than power, and that is exactly what comes through here. Ripe red Sangiovese fruit, rose petal, blood orange and spice infuse this racy, exotic Chianti Classico with so much character. The 2017 spent two years in oak, half in cask and half in neutral oak. JS 94 (5/2020): A rich, layered CC with intense cherry and flower character, as well as orange peel. Full-bodied with firm, velvety tannins and a flavorful finish. Drink or hold.
WA 91 (8/2020): The Fontodi 2017 Chianti Classico gives the impression of being slightly mature or advanced, even now straight out of the gate. The hot and dry vintage has shaped aromas of candied cherry, dried plum, rum raisin, white chocolate and a dusty note of wet chalk. The wine is quite beautiful in terms of mouthfeel, with well-integrated alcohol and tannins that close without sharpness or astringency. This dark and sultry Sangiovese shows moderate fruit, focused mostly on dark blackberry and dried cherry. I would recommend a near-term drinking window for this pleasantly rich and accessible wine. |

VM 97 (9/2020): The 2017 Flaccianello della Pieve is fabulous. Dark, sensual and enveloping, the 2017 captures the essence of the house style in its textural richness and baritone inflections. Black cherry, plum, spice, new leather, licorice and chocolate infuse the 2017 with tremendous richness. The 2017 spent 18 months in barrique followed by 6 months in cask, the same aging regime as the Vigna del Sorbo, but with a bit more new oak. That approach worked very well, as the Flaccianello stands out for its exceptional textural elegance and finesse. It is a positively stellar wine. Antonio Galloni.
WA 96 (8/2020): The Fontodi 2017 Flaccianello della Pieve is a standout wine of the dry vintage. This pure Sangiovese opens to a dark garnet color with more visible concentration and density compared to recent past editions. This is a beautiful wine with pliant tannins, dark fruit richness, balanced acidity and a fruit-forward 15% alcohol content. The wine is big and bold when weighed on the Flaccianello scale (and even more so when weighed on the Sangiovese scale) with dark cherry, plum, spice, violet, chalk and campfire ash. Despite that power and inner opulence, this wine adds that zesty Sangiovese character with fresh acidity and an energized approach. This Flaccianello is whole and complete with the natural firmness and structure to hold it steady during the aging process. A small part of amphorae-aged fruit is added to the blend.
JS 95 (5/2020): Very high-toned and muscular red with crushed cherries, blackberries and walnuts. Some dried earth. It’s full-bodied and chewy with solid tannins that form the wine. Beautiful ripe fruit in the center palate. Needs time to soften. Try after 2022. |

WA 95 (2/2022): The Fuligni 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is a beautiful wine, and it shines a much-deserved spotlight on one of the most consistent estates in Montalcino. It is bright and luminous with a dark ruby shine. The bouquet reveals deeply layered tones of red cherry, wild berry, rose, earth and candied violets. Give the wine an extra twirl or two, and you get some rosemary and lavender. Soft dusty mineral and limestone also appear. I'd definitely put this bottle on a short list of the most recommended bottles from the 2017 vintage. |

JD 95+ (12/2020): A pretty, perfumed example of this cuvee, the 2017 Barbaresco offers lots more red fruits as well as spice, dried flowers, incense, and loamy soil. With more licorice and minerality emerging with time in the glass, it hits the palate with medium-bodied richness, an elegant texture, plenty of firm tannins, and a great finish. It doesn't get more textbook Nebbiolo than this. This classic beauty is going to benefit from 5-7 years of bottle age and have 2-3 decades of longevity.
VM 92 (10/2020): The 2017 Barbaresco is a very pretty, gracious wine. Crushed red berries, dried flowers, mint and sweet spice all grace this decidedly airy, ethereal Barbaresco from the Gaja family. In 2017, the Barbaresco is a bit on the lighter side of things. In exchange, though, it will drink well right out of the gate. Antonio Galloni.
WA 95 (7/2020): The Gaja 2017 Barbaresco is nuanced and delicate with ever-expanding aromatic intensity that amply fills the balloon of your glass. The wine takes a little while to open fully, and it slowly releases forest berry, powdered licorice, toasted aniseed, spearmint, dried lavender and rosemary essence to build a lasting bouquet. The mouthfeel is streamlined and almost steely, with an extremely linear approach that adds to its length and persistency. The tannins are tucked into the wine's delicate fiber, but you do feel the extra textural firmness of the hot vintage nonetheless. As we have seen in past vintages, more definition is added by a pretty mineral note that is a common thread in these wines from Gaja. |

Rich, medium-bodied, beautifully balanced, it’s a beautiful and classy white well worth drinking and cellaring. First released in 1983, this cuvee is named after Lucia and Angelo Gaja's daughter, Gaia Gaja, and Angelo Gaja's grandmother Clotilde Rey. (Drink between 2019-2031).

Jump forward in time to the 2017 Langhe Gaia & Rey, and this is another vintage in which malo did not start. (Partial malolactic returns in 2018). Since those first years of production, the oak usage has also been tweaked, now with less barrique in favor of more botte grande. Thanks to these changes, the aromatic profile of this wine veers toward citrus and rich tropical fruit, especially in a warm vintage such as this. However counterintuitive, this edition also shows a very bright and precise touch of acidity that serves to give the wine balanced and mouth-cleansing salinity.

VM 96 (2/2021): Grasso's 2017 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera is fabulous. In fact, the Gavarini is easily one of the wines of the vintage because it retains all of its classic signatures, which is also the sign of a first-class vineyard. Bright and vibrant in the glass, the Gavarini pulses with energy. Crushed red flowers, mint, chalk, white pepper, cinnamon and orange peel give the 2017 a super-classic Nebbiolo profile, as expressed in a relatively high-altitude site. The precision and finesse of the tannins - so hard to find in 2017- elevates the Gavarini into the realm of the sublime. Antonio Galloni.
JD 96 (5/2021): The distinctive amphitheater that is Gavarini in Monforte d’Alba is situated just north of Ginestra. The 2017 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera is nuanced with perfectly ripe cherry, cinnamon, cedar, and menthol. It delivers a high level of refinement on the palate, with super-fine tannins, orange peel, pomegranate, and dried roses. Drink 2025-2045.
WA 95+ (6/2021): The Elio Grasso 2017 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera shows us that deft hands are able to shape good results in a challenging vintage. This wine is balanced and polished with an array of smaller and more detailed aromas that we simply don't see in the majority of Barolo releases from this hot and dry vintage. The bouquet here cautiously unveils tiny berry fruit, underbrush, wild rose, lilac, rusty nail and crushed stone. Nuanced and precise, this is one of a handful of 2017 releases that deserves special praise.
JS 95 (6/2021): Ripe-berry aromas with toffee and some iodine and stone. Full-bodied with depth of fruit and chewy, polished tannins that are intense and pointed. This has so much structure and intensity. Give it time to soften and come together. Try in 2025. |

VM 97 (3/2020): A stunning wine, the 2017 Ornellaia offers a captivating interplay of richness and energy. Picking early was the key. Young vine Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc were harvested in August for the first time ever. In the glass, the 2017 offers up an enticing melange of mocha, cedar, tobacco and licorice, with soft curves that add to its sensuality and allure. The 2017 is sumptuous and racy, as Ornellaias from warmer years tend to be, but it is not at all heavy or overdone. In a word: superb! Antoni Galloni.

JS 96 (4/2021): Plums and ripe strawberries with some crushed-stone undertones. Full-bodied and layered with round, rich tannins and an intensely fruity finish. But then, some fine tannins that are cashmere-like. A little tight at the end. From organically grown grapes. Drink after 2024.
VM 95 (2/2021): The Barolo Cannubi is absolutely gorgeous in 2017. Hot and brutally dry conditions notwithstanding, the Cannubi is creamy and sensual in the glass, with impeccable balance, soft, racy edges and tons of allure. It is easily one of the most sensual, compelling Barolos of the year. Ripe dark red/purplish fruit, spice, mint and cedar meld into the beautifully textured, resonant finish. I am so impressed with the wine's freshness. Perhaps the anti-hail netting helped keep some shade on the fruit. What a wine. Antonio Galloni. |

VM 94 (2/2021): The 2017 Barolo Via Nuova is stellar. In 2017, the Via Nuova is a bit nervous, the sign of a Barolo that is going to need a number of years to unwind. Bright red-toned fruit, chalk, crushed rocks, mint and white pepper add pretty aromatic top notes. As always, the Via Nuova is the most taut Barolo in the range. Via Nuova is a blend of seven vineyard sites; Terlo, Paiagallo and Liste (in Barolo); Ravera and Mosconi (in Monforte); and Gabutti and Baudana (in Serralunga). Antonio Galloni. |

VM 95 (2/2021): The 2017 Barolo Brunate is a dark, powerful wine. A huge swath of tannins gives the Brunate its feeling of gravitas. Readers will have to be patient with the 2017, as it is going to need a number of years to come together. Dark cherry fruit, lavender, sage, licorice, spice and earthy notes build into a crescendo of aromas and flavors that is just captivating. The 2017 finishes with tremendous substance and intensity, both of which bode so well for the future. Antonio Galloni.
WA 95 (3/2021): Keeping in line with the personality of the vintage, the 2017 Barolo Brunate is open and deeply expressive on first nose, with inviting waves of dark fruit, pressed violet, rust and licorice that add considerably to the lifted intensity of the bouquet. This Brunate puts its power and its deep, inner elegance right out there for you to enjoy. However, it also promises better things to those willing to wait for the wine to complete its bottle evolution over the coming decades. The palate is delicately lean, but long and polished, with important tannic fiber at the back. The 2017 growing season offered no moisture during the hottest weeks of summer, yet these tenacious grapevines and their extended root systems found a way to survive and thrive. |

| VM 97 (9/2020): The 2017 Percarlo is an exotic beauty. Rich and sumptuous in the glass, with tremendous fruit density, the 2017 packs a serious punch. Succulent dark cherry, plum, licorice, menthol and earthy notes emerge over time, but the tannins remain imposing. Like the Baròncole, the Percarlo needs cellaring to be at its best. The 2017 was much more forthcoming from barrel. It will reveal all of that sumptuousness once again, but not soon. Antonio Galloni. |

The 2017 Barbaresco Cottá unfolds to beautiful intensity and depth. The Neive area suffered hail damage on April 15th, and we are lucky that this parcel was spared, enough so to render a 9,000-bottle release. This estate believes in long maceration times (the wine stays on the skins for up to 40 days) with no selected yeasts. Malolactic fermentation is allowed to happen at its own pace in French barrel, and the wine ages up to 24 months, with lees contact for about half that time. The approach is traditional and straightforward, resulting in a wine that is focused, detailed and polished with bright cherry fruit, licorice and campfire ash. I love the intensity you get here.

| WA 93 (7/2020): With fruit from Treiso, this wine is often recognized by its immediate and accessible personality, with silky tannins and delicate floral aromas. The Sottimano family farms five separate vineyard sites in the appellation. The 2017 Barbaresco Pajore is a little more subdued in this vintage with a wide assortment of earthy, wild fruit and licorice aromas. This expression offers a lower threshold on the aromatic high points. However, the palate is more elaborate and constructed in this vintage with firm, free-standing tannins that give lift and buoyancy. Some 5,000 bottles were made. |

WA 92+ (5/2019): A blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the 2017 Guidalberto appeals to the more informal side of sophisticated drinking. By that I mean it makes a great choice at lunch or for family dinners. Despite the accessibility and dense concentration of the fruit, especially evident in a warm vintage such as this, the wine's pedigree is evident in terms of the careful management of the structure and acidity. My samples were a little closed at first and needed some extra coaxing. Once open, the wine shows the dark fruit and exuberance of this hot vintage in Tuscany.

Even with the extremes of the punishing growing season, the 2017 comes through beautifully, showing remarkable clarity and precision. Black cherry, plum, lavender and spice notes are pushed forward, but it is the wine's structure that gives energy and a real sense of direction. Full-bodied with soft, polished tannins and a long, creamy-textured finish. It’s polished, yet concentrated. Better after 2022, but already very seductive.
VM 94 (1/2021): The 2017 Sassicaia shows the natural richness and intensity of the year while retaining its mid-weight sense of balance and overall poise. A burst of super-ripe red cherry/plum fruit makes a strong opening statement. Mocha, cinnamon, leather and dried herbs appear later, adding aromatic lift. The 2017 is a fairly immediate Sassicaia. Even so, it has enough energy to drink well for a number of years. Production is down 35%, a combination of naturally low yields, dehydration on the vine and then selection in the cellar. Most of the fruit comes from the estate’ hillside vineyards, older parcels that resisted the conditions better. Antonio Galloni.

Thanks to the significant know-how and foresight of its creators, the 2017 Sassicaia achieves all of its basic promises with success. |

JS 97 (8/2019): This is a glorious young merlot with flowers, blackberries, hazelnuts and chocolate on the nose and palate. Full-bodied, layered and creamy with ripe and firm tannins. Wonderful depth and length. Better in 2022 and onwards, but already a glorious young red to try.
WA 96 (8/2019): The 2017 Redigaffi has a few surprises up its sleeve, the most unexpected of which are those floral aromas of rose and lavender that lift so gently from the bouquet. These are absolutely counterintuitive given the heat and power of this vintage. This Redigaffi is a delicate wine in terms of its aromatic display despite the density and extract that is delivered to the palate. It carries a touch of bitterness or tannic dryness on the close to go along with its 15.5% alcohol content. The mouthfeel is tight, focused and sharp. This is a really beautiful and interesting Merlot that skirts around the hot vintage, yet it ultimately leaves you with marked determination and bold fruit flavors. |

JD 96 (5/2021): The 2017 Barolo Bricco Delle Viole is the darker fruited of the G.D. Vajra sites and has rounded floral aromatics of crushed roses, resin, and cranberry cocktail. The palate is ripe and inviting, with building structure and notes of fresh red cherry, blood orange, and clove. The warmth of the vintage is felt without sacrificing lift. Drink 2025-2050The G.D. Vajra estate is based within the commune of Barolo, where Giuseppe and Aldo Vajra helm the winemaking responsibilities. Giuseppe, who took more of a leadership role in 2008, has been instrumental in continuing to develop the family estate, while Isonzo Vajra leads in vineyard management. Most recently they have completed the expansion of their cellar space, and they are also releasing their wines a touch later to allow the additional time in bottle to soften any harsh edges. As of the 2019 vintage, both the G.D.Vajra and Luigi Baudana estates are certified organic. (Drink between 2025-2050).
VM 95 (2/2021): The 2017 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is classy and elegant to the core. Medium in body and wonderfully translucent, the 2017 captures all of the finesse of this site. Naturally, the 2017 also shows the ripeness of the year, but it retains its sublime sense of poise. The 2017 Bricco delle Viole is one of the clear stand outs of the year. (Drink between 2025-2042). WA 95 (6/2021): The G.D. Vajra 2017 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is packed with medium dark cherry fruit and plum. The wine also shows a savory side, with spice, hazelnut cream, licorice and lightly fragrant potting soil. This vintage sits solid on the palate, wrapping thickly over the senses, thanks to its creamy, fruit-driven consistency and well-managed tannins. These vines are high in elevation, ranging from 400 to 480 meters in altitude. Those higher elevations are key to interpreting a vintage that saw heat such as this. |

This isn't quite as structured as the Chevalier, but it too is promising. Drink 2028+. |
