Tasting Notes:
VM 95+ (10/2022): The 2018 Barolo Francia is powerful, deep and also a touch austere. It shows the edginess of all the 2018s, but also has a feeling of textural creaminess that adds tons of character. Spice, menthol, leather and a whole range of balsamic overtones build into the deep, imposing finish. Roberto Conterno decided to forego his Barolo Monfortino in 2018, opting instead to blend all the casks into his Francia bottling. When that happens, Francia often surprises down the road. That could very well turn out to be the case here. (Drink between 2024-2043). Antonio Galloni.
WA 95 (4/2024): The Giacomo Conterno 2018 Barolo Francia has opened beautifully since I last tasted this wine at the winery two years ago. It was closed back then (no surprise since I tasted it as an unfinished sample), but with the distance of time, the wine has blossomed to show blackcurrant, cassis, aniseed, blue flower and pencil shaving. The Francia is known for its magical combination of power and nuance, both delivered with seamless intensity. This vintage offers a savory component with hints of toasted spice or spent ember. The tannins are fine and polished.

VM 94 (2/2018): The 2015 Barbera d'Alba Francia is fabulous. Silky, supple and radiant, with no hard edges and exceptional balance, the 2015 comes across as a bit shy today, and yet there is so much to like. The ripe, radiant personality of the year dominates over the more savory/mineral notes that are typical of Barberas from this site, but the wine remains light on its feet and gracious. A rush of dark red and bluish-hued fruits, lavender and blood orange makes a strong closing statement.
WA 94 (6/2017): Boasting immediate depth and dimension, the 2015 Barbera d'Alba Vigna Francia is a commanding and confident wine. Tasted from barrel, the wine's color is dense and very dark. Youthful fruit tones of blackberry confit and black currant give the wine a solid aromatic foundation. That base creates an appropriate framework for ethereal notes of licorice, black olive, spice and campfire ash. It is very difficult to achieve this level of complexity with Barbera, but Roberto Conterno does so with flawless perfection. The mouthfeel is round and plump, but the opulence of the wine is also reined in by its lively acidity. |

VM 93-95 (2/2017): The 2015 Barbera d'Alba Cerretta is remarkably vivid and striking in its beauty. Dark red cherry, blueberry, violet and lavender infuse a rich, creamy Barbera built on silkiness, texture and nuance. Succulent and yet translucent, the 2015 is shaping up to be a real winner. The 2015 Cerretta is an immense wine with which to begin a walk around the many casks that line the walls at this hallowed winery in Monforte. Antonio Galloni.
WA 93 (6/2017): The beautiful 2015 Barbera d'Alba Cerretta shows ripe fruit and evident roundness. The Barbera grape likes a little extra heat and that's exactly what it got during the very warm 2015 growing season. The wine shows an inky dark appearance with little light penetration. The aromas are characterized by fullness and seamless transitions that segue to black fruit, plum, spice, tar and smoky tobacco. This special wine explores the deep and unexpected inner workings of the Barbera grape, offering a surprising level of complexity and nuance along the way. Despite the hot vintage, it does not lack in refreshing acidity. |

JD 95 (5/2023): There is surprising depth for the vintage in the 2018 Barolo Arione, with licorice, black truffle, violet, and cherry lozenge. Medium to full-bodied, with fleshy cherry fruit, it is long and luxurious on the palate, with fine tannins and a velvety mouthfeel. A fantastic wine from Roberto Conterno, it is an outstanding wine to drink right now or over the coming 20 years. (Drink between 2023-2043). Audrey Frick.
VM 95 (10/2022): The 2018 Barolo Arione is an imposing wine. It's presence alone is impossible to miss. Arione is a wine that demands attention. There is something wild and exotic - almost animalistic - about the Arione and the way it asserts itself. Time in the glass brings out scents of sage, menthol, white pepper and orange peel. A generous kick of Serralunga acidity and tannin punctuates the finish. It's still early days for Roberto Conterno's Barolo from Arione. I can't wait to see how this ages. (Drink between 2024-2043). WA 94 (6/2011): The 2000 Barolo Cascina Francia is beautifully fleshy and supple in its radiant red fruit, freshly cut roses and licorice. The 2000 is a wonderfully open, seductive vintage for Cascina Francia, yet the wine has more than enough freshness to drink well for many, many years. At times, the 2000 tastes like it could have been made yesterday! Round, silky tannins frame the generous finish. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2030.
VM 91+ (12/2004): Medium red with an amber edge. Aromas of baked strawberry, dried rose and marzipan. Sweet, lush and rather soft for a Conterno Barolo, but lifted by a floral perfume and sappy acidity. Densely packed, vinous and long, with a fragrant tobacco note on the aftertaste. |

| WA 94 (10/2007): The 2003 Barolo Cascina Francia is a remarkable wine for the vintage. This deep, powerful Barolo reveals awesome richness and an almost liqueur-like quality to its fruit that is balanced by the chalky mineral notes that provide freshness on the finish and help convey an impression of notable balance. In 2003 there is no Monfortino, and the Cascina Francia surely benefits from the addition of that juice which is mostly felt in the wine’s depth. Resisting the temptation to harvest too early, Roberto Conterno waited until October 8 to start picking in his Cascina Francia vineyard, long after most producers had already brought the fruit in. He had the benefit of the late September rains that helped restore at least a little freshness to the fruit, and as a result his 2003 Cascina Francia doesn’t have the aggressive tannins that plague so many wines. Simply put, this is a stunning Barolo made all the more notable by the challenging conditions the vintage presented. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2023. |

VM 98 (5/2015): The 2004 Barolo Cascina Francia boasts staggering depth and explosive intensity from the very first taste. One of the most brooding, backward 2004s, the Cascina Francia is one of the only wines in this vintage that I am slightly disappointed to have opened, as it is so intensely backward. Hints of sage, tobacco, menthol, rose petal and graphite open up in the glass, recalling just how mesmerizing the 2004 was in cask. At once silky, while at other times virile, the 2004 Cascina Francia is constantly changing in the glass. The multiple shades of nuance and complexity are those of Nebbiolo from a great site as expressed by one of the region's historic families. The price of Monfortino has escalated rapidly over the last few years, but by comparison, the 2004 Cascina Francia is still available in the market and represents a good relative value. This spectacularly rich, concentrated Barolo possesses striking perfume in its smoke, tar, spiced red fruits, licorice and flowers. The wine offers tremendous length and a finish that lasts forever. This is an especially dense, powerful Cascina Francia with a gorgeous core of perfumed sweet fruit that will require some time to fully emerge but is breathtakingly beautiful even at this early stage. That said, it is impossible to ignore the wine’s richness and depth, both of which are impressive. With time in the glass hints of sweet roses, cherries, spices and tar emerge, all framed by impeccably silky tannins. As always, readers should taste this wine as soon as possible, as it will almost certainly head for a slumber during which it will be impossible to evaluate with any accuracy. Today, this mid-weight, graceful Barolo Cascina Francia looks to be accessible relatively early, which means around age 10-12 give or take. It is another superb Barolo from Giacomo Conterno. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2030.

Open-knit and supple, the 2005 offers good depth and vibrancy to match its silky, nuanced personality. The 2005 is an especially polished Cascina Francia that is just entering the early part of its plateau of maturity. Interestingly, it is also the total stylistic opposite of the much more virile Monfortino. Antonio Galloni.
JS 93 (3/2011): Aromas of truffles, forest floor, and ripe fruit. On the palate, leather and orange peel. This is rich and powerful, with some serious tannins. I love the fruit now, but should be peaking after 2014. |

Over time, the classic Cascina Francia bouquet of roses, tar, herbs and licorice comes forward, but only reluctantly. A massive wall of tannins prevents the fruit from emerging, but every now and then the wine shows hints of its ultimate potential. The finish alone is breathtakingly beautiful for its balance and inner sense of harmony. The 2006 is not as showy young as other recent great vintages such as 2001 or 2004, so I will not be surprised if it is overlooked, but it is a magnificent Barolo that only needs time, and lots of it. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2046.

WA 96+ (10/2011): The 2007 Barolo Cascina Francia is an unusual version of this benchmark wine. In 2007 Conterno decided against bottling his Monfortino. Conterno believes Nebbiolo can handle rain and humidity (hence his decision to make Monfortino in rainy years such as 1987 and 2002), but not drought. The result is a Cascina Francia that is unusually dark, rich and powerful. The floral, herbal notes that are typical in young Cascina Francia have been replaced by deeper notes of tar, smoke and licorice to match the layers of intense dark fruit. The 2007 is powerful and imposing from start to finish. It is going to be a fascinating Barolo to follow over the coming years and decades. Cascina Francia is often accessible for the first year or two after it has been bottled. That has not been my experience with the 2007. It seems already headed for a period of dormancy. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2037.
JS 94 (7/2012): Didn't taste this last year. Fabulous aromas of roses and stems of the rose with plums and dark fruits. Full-bodied, with a solid core of fruit. This is firm and racy with a gorgeous finish. Racy and structured. Needs at least three years more. Muscular Cascina Francia.
VM 94 (10/2011): Good medium red. Superripe aromas and flavors of cherry, raspberry, smoke, mocha and underbrush. Plush, large-scaled and harmonious from the outset; utterly seamless. This classically dry Barolo, which includes the Monfortino juice, is as chewy as a solid. Saturates the entire palate with broad, ripe tannins. If I had to quibble, it lacks the energy and force of the very best vintages, but it's a mouthful of pleasure. |

The floral, herbal notes that are typical in young Cascina Francia have been replaced by deeper notes of tar, smoke and licorice to match the layers of intense dark fruit. The 2007 is powerful and imposing from start to finish. It is going to be a fascinating Barolo to follow over the coming years and decades. Cascina Francia is often accessible for the first year or two after it has been bottled. That has not been my experience with the 2007. It seems already headed for a period of dormancy. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2037.
JS 94 (7/2012): Didn't taste this last year. Fabulous aromas of roses and stems of the rose with plums and dark fruits. Full-bodied, with a solid core of fruit. This is firm and racy with a gorgeous finish. Racy and structured. Needs at least three years more. Muscular Cascina Francia.
VM 94 (10/2011): Good medium red. Superripe aromas and flavors of cherry, raspberry, smoke, mocha and underbrush. Plush, large-scaled and harmonious from the outset; utterly seamless. This classically dry Barolo, which includes the Monfortino juice, is as chewy as a solid. Saturates the entire palate with broad, ripe tannins. If I had to quibble, it lacks the energy and force of the very best vintages, but it's a mouthful of pleasure. |

The style is slightly more immediate, but this is a great aging wine nonetheless.

Roberto Conterno made no Monfortino this vintage so declassified the entire production into this wine as he did in 2007. Drink or hold.

Like liquid silk on entry, then very rich, ripe and sweet in the middle, offering complex notes of red berries, roasted herbs, leather and smoked meat. Finishes sappy and very long, with lush tannins and serious breadth. The tannins are more than supported by the wine's strong mid-palate material. The site has more clay in the soils and vines are up to 20years old. There is a point of ripe cherry or sweet blackberry on the close. Behind the primary fruit is a pretty succession of tar, campfire smoke and tasted hazelnut aromas. This wine will be bottled in June. |

Time in the glass just serves to bring out the wine's striking inner perfume, natural depth and crystalline intensity. Despite its relatively recent bottling, the 2014 is super-expressive, with tons of detail and a finish that goes on forever. JD 96 (5/2024): Ten years in, the 2014 Barolo Cerretta is simply gorgeous. A medium blood red color, its initial notes of dried raspberries, mint, and fennel are joined as it opens with hints of porcini powder, mushroomy earth, and dark stones. Medium-bodied, it’s elegant but has depth on the palate, with a bright, snappy lift and a stony texture. WA 95+ (11/2021): Thanks to altitude and heavier soils, Cerretta performs well in hot vintages, such as 2017, 2015 and 2011. The vines (planted a quarter century ago) sit at about 400 meters in elevation and water moisture is absorbed by the clay of Serralunga d'Alba. These conditions help to shape the wine's important tannins and elegant structure. Ultimately however, I found the 2017 Barolo Cerretta to be very much identified by its birth year. The wine offers a long interlude of intense brightness with sweet cherry, fragolino and wild rose, which soften any angular or hard edges put forth by the Nebbiolo grape. This 2017 vintage is exceedingly smooth and silky in character with a pliant or yielding quality that should serve it nicely as the wine completes its aging trajectory.

VM 95+ (10/2022): The 2018 Barolo Francia is powerful, deep and also a touch austere. It shows the edginess of all the 2018s, but also has a feeling of textural creaminess that adds tons of character. Spice, menthol, leather and a whole range of balsamic overtones build into the deep, imposing finish. Roberto Conterno decided to forego his Barolo Monfortino in 2018, opting instead to blend all the casks into his Francia bottling. When that happens, Francia often surprises down the road. That could very well turn out to be the case here. (Drink between 2024-2043). Antonio Galloni.
WA 95 (4/2024): The Giacomo Conterno 2018 Barolo Francia has opened beautifully since I last tasted this wine at the winery two years ago. It was closed back then (no surprise since I tasted it as an unfinished sample), but with the distance of time, the wine has blossomed to show blackcurrant, cassis, aniseed, blue flower and pencil shaving. The Francia is known for its magical combination of power and nuance, both delivered with seamless intensity. This vintage offers a savory component with hints of toasted spice or spent ember. The tannins are fine and polished. |

| VM 97 (12/2015): Conterno's 2011 Barolo Francia lifts from the glass with the most finessed, exquisite aromatics imaginable. Over the last decade, Monfortino has not been made three times; 2003, 2007 and 2009, all warm vintages for Piedmont. In each of those years, the Francia was a big, racy Barolo. But the 2011 is totally different. Readers will find a sublime, aromatically lifted Barolo that has virtually nothing in common with 2003, 2007 or 2009. Freshly cut flowers, mint, hard candy and a hint of vanillin are some of the notes that are woven together. In 2011, the Francia is a Barolo of nearly indescribable class. As a reminder, in 2011 Roberto Conterno did not bottle his flagship Barolo Riserva Monfortino. WA 97 (6/2011): Conterno’s 2000 Barolo Riserva Monfortino gives an impression of accessibility only because it is so open relative to some of the surrounding vintages of this great, legendary Barolo. The 2000 has tons of fruit backed up with considerable tannic heft. With time in the glass sweet, balsamic notes make an appearance, but this is one of the few 2000s that needs considerable cellaring to show all of its cards. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2040.
VM 93 (12/2007): Medium red-amber. Slightly high-toned aromas of truffle, tobacco, mocha, cedar and mellow oak, with a whiff of exotic fruits. Lush, creamy and suave but with a surprising spine of acidity and enticing minerality keeping it fresh. Best today on the back half, which is impressively sweet and long. |

WA 99 (10/2008): The 2001 Barolo Riserva Monfortino flows from the glass with stunning depth and purity. This seamless, elegant Barolo caresses the palate with incredible persistence as layers of aromas and flavors develop in the glass. Stylistically it is very much like the 2001 Cascina Francia, only with more intensity, depth and sheer volume. Monfortino has always had power to spare, but in 2001 it is also incredibly elegant, something that previous vintages have only acquired with significant bottle age. This is a towering, majestic Monfortino that will rightfully take its place among the very finest Monfortinos ever made. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2041.
VM 94-96 (12/2007): (still in barrel) Good medium red with amber highlights. The nose offers incredible early perfume of strawberry, truffle and rose petal. Then deep, creamy and complex on the palate; one chews this liquid! Incredibly youthful wine with Outstanding concentration, sweetness and sap. The strawberry and truffle flavors are complicated by a meaty nuance. Shows much more cut than the 2000. Finishes with Outstanding building length. |

VM 98 (5/2014): The 2002 Monfortino is one of the most iconic Conterno wines in recent memory for the reasons described above. Interestingly, the additional year in cask has made the 2002 much more approachable in its youth than most other vintages, so opening a bottle at this stage is not as crazy as it might seem on paper. The 2002 impresses for its depth, concentration and complexity. Tonight, it is superb. Tasted from magnum.
WA 98 (12/2010): Conterno’s 2002 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is a legend in the making, or now that it is in bottle, it may be more correct to simply say it is a legend. The late Giovanni Conterno and his son Roberto Conterno created quite a stir when they announced that they would make their Monfortino in 2002, a year in which most of the harvest in Piedmont was severely compromised by a cold summer and devastating hail in early September. But there was more. The Conternos not only announced that they would make their Monfortino in 2002 but no Barolo Cascina Francia for the first time ever in the estate’s history. In a bit of defiance towards the press, the Conternos then announced no one would be allowed to taste the wine from barrel. Over the years, this stance softened. Visitors lucky enough to visit the cellars and sample the wine from cask knew what was in store. Simply put, the 2002 Monfortino is stratospheric. A dark, imposing, but sensual wine, it flows from the glass with a breathtaking array of dried roses, autumn leaves, wild cherries, plums, new leather, espresso, licorice and spices, showing phenomenal depth, richness and balance. The tension between the luxuriousness of the fruit and the austerity of the vintage is truly captivating. I have tasted the 2002 Monfortino multiple times from barrel and bottle. At times it has reminded me of what I imagine the 1971 tasted like upon release, at other times it has seemed more similar to 1978. According to Giovanni Conterno, the 2002 reminded him of the 1971. Either way, the wine is extraordinary. The 2002 Monfortino is the result of the cold vintage that was typical of Piedmont up until the mid 1980s. In many ways, it is a throwback to wines that can’t be made anymore in Piedmont. Roberto Conterno thought so highly of the 2002 Monfortino he gave the wine an extra year in barrrel. And of course, there is one sad footnote. The world lost Giovanni Conterno to cancer in 2004, but he made sure his last Monfortino was at least equal, if not better, than his most monumental wines. There is little doubt the 2002 Monfortino will soon take its place as one of the greatest Monfortinos ever made. It is the most fitting last chapter to the life of one of the world’s greatest winemakers. As always, I suggest readers who have an interest in Monfortino taste the wine as soon as possible, as it will soon head into a period of dormancy, which in this vintage may last several decades. One of my favorite vintages for current drinking is the 1970, which still looks to have another 30 years of fine drinking ahead of it! Anticipated maturity: 2027-2052.
VM 92-95 (11/2009): (still in barrel, as Conterno felt it needed longer to resolve its tannins) Very sexy, gamey aromas of redcurrant and truffley underbrush. Like an elixir of black fruits, smoky minerals and menthol on the nose, with penetrating acidity providing almost painful cut. Also the most tannic wine in the cellar today, and incredibly primary considering the fact that it's been in wood for nearly seven years. This distinctly vertical and fascinating wine may never become totally expressive or pliant but it may live forever. For Monfortino fans with extensive collections of this great Barolo, it should also be a must purchase. The crop level here following a late harvest and strict selection was in the range of 15 hectoliters per hectare, and the high skin-to-juice ratio of the grapes is largely responsible for the wine's powerful tannic spine.
JS 97 (3/2011): What a wine. In a year where the rainfall was more than two times the norm Giacomo really impresses. This wine is an ever evolving (even in the glass!) experience. On the nose it has fresh mint and licorice then a wave of roses, berries, and cherries. On the palate there is more of the same, tons of berries, licorice and roses. Incredibly full and ultra-velvety. This is a dense wine that does not lack depth and focus. Breathtaking balance and a incredible finish that is measured in minutes not seconds. Harmonious. |

WA 100 (6/2017): The 2010 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is a perfect wine and there are few things I am more sure of in this life. This is an extraordinary creation that bursts from the glass with a level of distinct intensity and elegance that is nothing short of breathtaking. The wine literally evokes an emotional and deeply visceral reaction thanks to the lasting impression it makes on your heart, mind and gut. This Barolo opens to a delicate garnet color that is brightened with crystalline luminosity. The bouquet offers an immediate curtain-raiser with chiseled aromas of wild berry, licorice, white truffle and tar. That explosive start is followed by a mounting crescendo of complexity and nuance. The wine is extremely silky and polished in terms of mouthfeel and this helps to underline its impressive persistence. Bravo!
JS 99 (10/2016): This is one of the most balanced, harmonious Monfortinos I’ve ever tasted. Aromas of dried rose petals and oranges. It’s full-bodied yet compacted and tight. Tannins are perfectly managed. All in harmony. This is from one of the latest harvests ever; it started October 29. So fabulous and so perfect now, why wait? But will age for decades.
VM 98-100 (3/2015): It's always great to get a glimpse of Monfortino as it ages in barrel. The 2010 is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine. Sweet red cherries, rose petals, smoke, licorice and savory herbs open up in the glass, but it is the wine's statuesque, towering personality that stands out most. Layers of nuance continue to build in a crescendo of aromas, flavors and textures that dazzles. Firm, chalky tannins support the huge finish. Conterno told me the 2010 might get an extra year in barrel to tame the the tannins, so it may be a while before the 2010 sees the light of day. The two vintages (2010 and 2013) are very similar, strikingly so, but the 2013 vintage registers at a slightly lower structural threshold. The tannins are slightly looser, or softer in the case of this wine. With up to six years in botte, the 2010 vintage is still crunchy and super sharp, while this wine is slightly more succulent and earthy. Some 20,000 bottles, 2,500 magnums and 400 three-liter bottles were made. |

VM 94 (9/2021): The 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Ama San Lorenzo is a deep, potent wine. Black cherry, gravel, smoke, licorice, chocolate, spice infuse the San Lorenzo with tons of dark Sangiovese character. A heady, muscular wine, the 2019 exudes tremendous richness. WA 94+ (10/2021): The Castello di Ama 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione San Lorenzo is one of the most distinctive wines in the ample portfolio offered by this estate. I always seem to find a balsamic note in the San Lorenzo Sangiovese (a blend of some of the property's best fruit, with a touch of Merlot and Malvasia Nera thrown in), and it definitely comes through in this vintage with grilled rosemary and even a touch of black olive. This wine is truly Mediterranean in spirit and it boasts an all-Italian identity. Its supple, mid-weight texture is amplified by elegant fruit and spice. And the wine's fresh acidity makes it the ideal pairing partner with your favorite Tuscan pasta or pici recipes. |

Bright and energetic, Solaia is decidedly medium in body in 2018, with striking purity and exceptional beauty. I can’t remember ever tasting a young Solaia with this much sheer appeal and balance in the early going. In 2018 Solaia is 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese and 7% Cabernet Franc. The blend is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller parts Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese. The fruit is harvested at the Antinori family's Tenuta Tignanello at the heart of the Chianti Classico appellation. The percentage of Cabernet Franc used in the blend is the ultimate Solaia wild card. In this vintage, the Franc has been increased to 7%, and that number is expected to be even higher in 2019 as the vines get older and the fruit more complex. Production of Solaia is 65,000 bottles in this vintage. This is a beautiful wine, but if pressed I must admit a preference for the 2018 Tignanello (the other celebrated wine crafted at this property). The 2018 Solaia is delicious on all fronts as expected, but the 2018 Tignanello struck at my heart strings. Either way, these are stunning results.

WA 95+ (6/2022): Here's an exciting new addition to the growing Comm. G.B. Burlotto family of wines. The 2018 Barolo Castelletto opens to a soft and delicate inner core that is framed by wild cherry, licorice and rose. The wine is beautifully tapered and streamlined on the palate, with very polished and silky tannins. It is great taste to this effort by the "King of Verduno," (a.k.a. proprietor Fabio Alessandria) and the structured fruit from Monforte d'Alba.
VM 94 (2/2022): The 2018 Barolo Castelletto is a new wine in this range from a parcel plant in 1973. It opens with soaring aromatics that then reappear on the palate in the wine's broad, ample feel. Sage, mint, leather, plum, lavender tobacco and espresso build in a sensual, aromatically beguiling Barolo that captures all of the pedigree of this Monforte site. Fabio Alessandria told me he was intrigued to try his hand making wine from a new site and village, hence the family's decision to buy this parcel in Monforte rather than bolstering their holdings closer to home. WA 92 (8/2021): The organic and biodynamic I Cacciagalli 2018 Fiano Zagreo (from the Roccamonfina IGT appellation) shows an amber hue of a color that is not quite orange but on its way, and there are suspended particles that give the wine a slightly veiled appearance. You gotta love the authenticity and pure Campania personality presented here in all its raw, punchy glory. There are aromas of dried apricot and honey, but you also get dusty aromas of crushed stone or dry cement.
VM 90 (6/2023): The 2018 Fiano Zagreo is a deep golden color. A savory blend of ground ginger and dried apricots makes up its bouquet. This flows across the palate, silky and with medium weight, as liquid floral concentration mounts and crisp orchard fruits cascade throughout. The 2018 finishes with a slight bitter tinge. The concentration and power are impressive for the 2018 vintage. Prunes and leather, leafy lightness, a touch of orange and an almost grapefruit note are sustained by firm acidity on a large, full, biting palate built for the long haul, filled out with youthful fruit concentration.

WA 96 (1/2025): Aged in Slavonian oak botti for an impressive 60 months, the organic 2018 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is the big gun from vintner Alfio Cavallotto and his merry team in Castiglione Falletto. This wine is impossibly complex and deep with savory knots that are tied into fabric or rich dark fruit. The bouquet opens to blackberry, plum cola, dried herb, spice and a lingering floral note of lilac or violet. To my palate, the Riserva Vignolo has a little more vertical lift and minerality in this vintage. The Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is more about heft and texture, with dusty tannin. Production is 7,222 bottles.

A dense, backward Barolo, the 2018 is going to need a handful of years to soften. It is a super-impressive wine for what has turned out to be an irregular vintage. This is beautifully done. WA 96 (1/2025): Aged in Slavonian oak botti for an impressive 60 months, the organic 2018 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is the big gun from vintner Alfio Cavallotto and his merry team in Castiglione Falletto. This wine is impossibly complex and deep with savory knots that are tied into fabric or rich dark fruit. The bouquet opens to blackberry, plum cola, dried herb, spice and a lingering floral note of lilac or violet. To my palate, the Riserva Vignolo has a little more vertical lift and minerality in this vintage. The Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is more about heft and texture, with dusty tannin. Production is 7,222 bottles.
VM 95 (1/2025): The 2018 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is quite the powerhouse. Sage, menthol, licorice, cloves, dried flowers, scorched earth, leather and gravel infuse the San Giuseppe with all of its classic signatures. A dense, backward Barolo, the 2018 is going to need a handful of years to soften. It is a super-impressive wine for what has turned out to be an irregular vintage. This is beautifully done. WA 97 (1/2025): The organic Cavallotto 2018 Braolo Riserva Vignolo delivers the focus and straight-shooting concentration that we can expect of a Castiglione Falletto. The wine ages for an extended 60 months in large Slavonian oak casks, and fruit comes from a southwest-facing slope with 40-year-old vines. The wine's core of fruit remains on the dark side, but you also get pretty lift and verticality with tart berry aromas, shaved mineral, cola and mint (like when you walk through the vineyard rows in summer). The wine is amply structured and fleshed out and delivers texture. The Riserva Vignolo is my favorite of Cavallotto's wines this year.

The finish is tart and bright with wild rose, raspberry, cassis and sour cherry. Cavallotto does an excellent job of presenting the genuine side of Nebbiolo no matter what the price point of the wine. |

JD 97 (3/2023): Expressive and beautifully pure, the 2018 Brunello Di Montalcino offers a gorgeous, sweet perfume of perfectly ripe raspberry eau de vie, crushed roses, delicate baking spice, and well-integrated cedar spice. It is medium-bodied, though it is generous and round with fruit in a long arch, fine tannins, and a soft, stony, mineral texture. Polished with more ripe raspberry, oolong tea, and fresh thyme, it is approachable now but will certainly improve over the next 15-20 years. (Drink between 2023-2043). Audrey Frick.
WA 94 (3/2023): Released in numbered bottles, the Le Chiuse 2018 Brunello di Montalcino (a certified organic wine with fruit sourced from across six hectares) shows punchy and bright aromas that recall dried grape skins or fermentation aromas. It suggests an open or immediate personality. There is a pleasant rawness or authenticity presented here with black cherry, plum, blue flower, cola and rusty nail. This is a true expression from a warm vintage that delivers mid-weight texture and well-managed tannins. It concludes with a hint of sweet cherry liqueur.
VM 93 (12/2022): The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino is youthfully coy and a bit reductive at first. Swirling brings about nuances of dusty rose, dried cherries, flowery underbrush and hints of animal musk. It glides across the palate with finesse, impressing more on its purity of fruit, petty inner florals and delicate nature than power. The 2018 finishes with medium length, showing sweet inner herbal tones, a twang of sour citrus and a gentle tug of fine tannin. This is such an understated beauty. (Drink between 2025-2031). JD 95 (5/2023): There is surprising depth for the vintage in the 2018 Barolo Arione, with licorice, black truffle, violet, and cherry lozenge. VM 95 (10/2022): The 2018 Barolo Arione is an imposing wine. It's presence alone is impossible to miss. Arione is a wine that demands attention. There is something wild and exotic - almost animalistic - about the Arione and the way it asserts itself. Time in the glass brings out scents of sage, menthol, white pepper and orange peel. A generous kick of Serralunga acidity and tannin punctuates the finish. It's still early days for Roberto Conterno's Barolo from Arione. I can't wait to see how this ages. (Drink between 2024-2043). JA 100 (8/2020): Finely textured, with a nuanced perfume that fills the glass and takes you to the intense underbrush of Tuscany. Succulent and yet savoury, this has a lilting freshness that is overlaid with ripe berry fruits, sage and white pepper spice, and clear minerality in terms of its scraping texture that makes your mouth water on the finish. Feels light and sculpted and yet has an intensity that skewers you to the spot. This is a great wine, with scope and imagination that doesn't want to let you go. Genuinely stands out among the wines of this tasting, and these are a fine array of wines. As with Colore, Bibi Graetz selects only old vines, the youngest 50 years old from five different vineyard sites across Tuscany, all farmed organically. Fermentations in open 225l barrels with natural yeasts and manual punch downs.
WA 94 (8/2020): The 2018 Testamatta shows elegant Sangiovese purity and transparency, starting with delicate wild berry and blueberry tones and finishing long with pretty accents of crushed limestone and a touch of campfire ash. In the glass, the wine is radiant and vivid with a luminous ruby or garnet color. Oak use is reduced to a bare minimum, with barrels that are up to their 16th year of use. "The older they are, the better," Bibi explains. As the wine opens in the glass, it presents pretty lilac and violet. This wine represents a blend of fruit from various sites (all with old vines that are farmed organically) across the region of Tuscany. The northern-most sites close to Florence tend to add the floral notes that are so characteristic of this cool vintage (which saw a bit more rain than average and extra work in the vineyards to kept these vines healthy). I visited the vineyards with Bibi in 2018 and remember how beautiful the grapes appeared on the vines. Much of the fruit used here comes from the Vigna del Cancello in Casciano del Murlo, which is midway between Siena and Montalcino. These southern sites give the wine its backbone and tannins. Bibi Graetz tells me that he struggled to create the blend for this 60,000-bottle release. He decided on a final blend, only to change his mind and re-blend two and a half months later. His second stab was specifically aimed at capturing finesse and softening the wine's tannic imprint. Indeed, the wine ultimately offers more in length (with fresh fruit flavors and bright acidity) than it does in power or mid-palate. The finish is silky, long and very fine. |

The wine opens to soft, supple fruit with blackberry and blackcurrants backed by spice, leather and tobacco. The aromas are fresh, fruit-forward and very inviting. The sweet succulence of the wine immediately invites a pairing with marinaded or barbecued meats slow-cooked over embers. In terms of mouthfeel, Il Bruciato is designed to be approachable and most importantly: food friendly. You can't go wrong here. This is pure pleasure on the palate, displaying both an opulence of fruit, yet also total poise and refinement, as sour berries find an energizing lift from juicy acidity. The 2018 doesn’t miss a beat, tapering off with rounded tannins while lingering on the palate for well up to a minute with an energizing burst of citrus, nuances of sweet rose and licorice. WA 95 (3/2023): Alessandro Mori's Il Marroneto 2018 Brunello di Montalcino opens to a spicy bouquet with hints of cumin and white pepper that fold seamlessly into bright cherry, blueberry and cassis. The trick to this wine is balance, as no one side pulls stronger than the other. More importantly, this Brunello still has life and vibrant energy despite 39 months of aging in oak casks. Precisely because this bottle tastes so good now, I see little reason to wait further. This 21,470-bottle release is a delight.
JD 94 (3/2023): The 2018 Brunello Di Montalcino pours a deep and youthful ruby hue. It is highly expressive with medicinal herbs, sour black cherry, leather, clove, and burnt orange. Medium to full-bodied, with tangy acidity and ripe yet angular tannins, it has a complex profile, with currant, dried flowers, and dusty saline earth. I am struck by how elegant the 2018 is, as Galatrona is so often a wine of impact. Black cherry, chocolate, game, leather, licorice and spice give the 2018 a good bit of nuance. WA 95-97 (9/2019): Tasted from barrel, the gorgeous 2018 Galatrona promises much beauty to come. Luca Sanjust says that this is the most Pomerol of the Merlot-based Galatronas he has created, and indeed, the wine boasts impeccable balance and depth. You get some of the balsam herb notes that I found in the 2017 vintage, although those are greatly downplayed here, giving more room to cherry and blackberry fruit instead. The 2018 vintage offers energy, freshness and tonic fruit. Underground water reserves were plentiful in 2018, and the fruit ripened slowly and harmoniously, creating textural richness and succulence. |

That said, the team at Poggio did a fantastic job finding balance. Do make sure to give the 2018 a good amount of time, as I followed this for three days, through which it only got better and better. VM 96+ (1/2021): The 2018 Saffredi is a regal, elegant, supremely polished wine. It may very well be the most refined Saffredi I have ever tasted. Silky in its first impression, with striking aromatic presence and exceptional balance, the 2018 is a total knock-out. Sweet red cherry, plum, mocha, licorice and cinnamon accents develop over time, but it is the wine’s overall balance and poise that are so impressive today. The 2018 is an absolutely gorgeous Saffredi. It spent 20 months in French oak barrels, about 65% new. Don’t miss it. Antonio Galloni.
JD 97 (7/2020): A fantastic nose to this with currant, sage, rosemary and rose-petal character. Sweet tobacco and spicy chocolate, too. Very complex. The palate shows lovely depth of fruit with blackberries, blackcurrants and fine tannins. It’s racy and refined with a direct, focused palate. Just a baby. A blend of cabernet sauvignon 60%, merlot 32% and petite verdot 8%. This needs at least two or three years to soften. Try in 2023.
WA 96 (11/2020): The Fattoria le Pupille 2018 Saffredi borrows quite a bit from all of the grapes that make up the blend (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot). These balanced results open to a round bouquet of dark fruit, black cherry and plum. As the wine warms in the glass, it shows spice, cured tobacco and campfire embers. This is a full-bodied expression, but not excessively so. It puts forth immediate elegance with carefully measured tannins and a fitting postscript of fresh acidity. This newest vintage of Saffredi should be hitting the market now, but if you buy it, you should plan on cellaring it. |

VM 95+ (12/2022): The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Casanovina Montosoli is a sleeping giant, slowly coming to life with a bouquet of dusty rose and brown spice over a core of dried black cherries. This is like crushed velvet on the palate, yet surprisingly lifted and graceful in feel, as dark red fruits and mineral tones drench the senses in primary concentration, leaving an air of balsam herbs to resonate. A caking of fine tannins is left to linger, nicely contrasted by a sizzle of residual acidity; yet in the end, the impression is one of youthful structure and poise. There’s such inner beauty here, but it will be years before the 2018 comes fully into focus. (Drink between 2026-2034). Eric Guido. |

WA 96 (10/2019): Compared to the 2017 vintage that shows a more accessible and full-bodied style, the 2018 Cervaro della Sala is a classic edition—it's about as classic as I have ever tasted this landmark white from Umbria to be. This cooler vintage prizes finesse and elegance, and those traits are matched by efforts in the winery to accomplish that same goal. On many levels, the 2018 vintage opens a new chapter for Cervaro della Sala, with a stronger emphasis on preserved lemon, crisp pear and crushed mineral. The wine offers beautiful freshness and linearity. I must also mention that this vintage is released while the fruit is still a bit closed or shy. That slightly reductive approach bodes very well for the wine's future evolution.
VM 92 (6/2020): The 2018 Cervaro della Sala is a blend of 92% Chardonnay with a splash of Grechetto, showing a rich and alluring bouquet, leading off with a hint of vanilla bean and giving way to peach, a dusting of confectioner’s spice and dried yellow flowers. On the palate, silky textures flesh out across the senses, carrying flavors of ripe apple, apricot and sweet herbs, as minerals and acids mingle toward the close. The finish is long and almost salty, buzzing with energy and making the mouth water for another sip. The balance here is impeccable, as is the use of barrel fermentation to create such textural richness. (Drink between 2020-2028). Eric Guido. |

| WA 96+ (7/2023): The elusive and highly collectible Soldera Case Basse 2018 100% Sangiovese is already available in certain markets yet ultimately proves very hard to buy. I suspect it is easier to locate in the United States than in Italy. No matter, Soldera advocates will be very pleased with this latest release that maintains enormous Sangiovese character and brightness despite the uneven growing season (that saw a wet and cool spring and a hot summer). The legendary Gianfranco Soldera died the morning of February 16, 2019, from a heart attack while driving along the bucolic, vineyard-lined road near his winery. That means this is the last vintage manned directly by Soldera, a man who remained extremely active in the vineyards and the winery until the very end. His send-off to us is a delicately nuanced wine with cassis, wild berry, rosemary, pencil shaving and blood orange. This is a beautiful wine that pays tribute not only to Gianfranco Soldera but to his non-interventionist vision of Italian wine that has influenced so many younger vintners in his wake. |

WA 95 (6/2021): The Sottimano 2018 Barbaresco Basarin shows tart cherry fruit and plum backed by lovely layers of crushed mineral, iron ore, spice and crushed flowers. The wine reveals an inner brightness or tartness that tastes terrific next the more nuanced character of the Nebbiolo grape. Basarin shows power and elegance in equal measure, and that is never an easy feat for any winemaker to accomplish. Production is limited to 5,500 bottles.
VM 94 (2/2022): The 2018 Barbaresco Basarin is a very pretty, classy wine. Dark red cherry, pomegranate, flowers and licorice notes are all nicely lifted. An elegant, supple wine, the Basarin will drink well with minimal cellaring. The purity of the fruit is striking. Readers will find a wine of total elegance and class. This is a stellar showing. WA 95 (6/2021): The Sottimano 2018 Barbaresco Basarin shows tart cherry fruit and plum backed by lovely layers of crushed mineral, iron ore, spice and crushed flowers. The wine reveals an inner brightness or tartness that tastes terrific next the more nuanced character of the Nebbiolo grape. Basarin shows power and elegance in equal measure, and that is never an easy feat for any winemaker to accomplish. Production is limited to 5,500 bottles.
VM 94 (2/2022): The 2018 Barbaresco Basarin is a very pretty, classy wine. Dark red cherry, pomegranate, flowers and licorice notes are all nicely lifted. An elegant, supple wine, the Basarin will drink well with minimal cellaring. The purity of the fruit is striking. Readers will find a wine of total elegance and class. This is a stellar showing. It boasts a direct delivery of wild berry fruit that is polished and brought into focus, thanks to crushed mineral, wild rose and licorice. With 7,000 bottles released, the Cottá vineyard is located in the village of Neive, and this wine is really something special.
JD 94 (5/2021): The most linear of the lineup, the 2018 Barbaresco Cotta is forward, with chalky earth, medicinal herbs, and sour cherry. There is a persistent lifted drive on the palate, with cranberry, orange peel, and dried leaves. Great for those who prefer a more acid and mineral driven style. Drink 2024-2036.
VM 93 (2/2022): The 2018 Barbaresco Cottá is one of the showier wines in the range, as it often is. It has that extra bit of mid-palate richness that is missing in some of the wines in this vintage. The fruit profiles leans toward the exotic end of the spectrum. Floral, spice and orange peel accents lend brightness to this ethereal, super-expressive Barbaresco. The 2018 will need a few years in bottle to soften, but it is quite pretty. WA 94 (6/2021): With fruit from Neive, the 2018 Barbaresco Fausoni is another gorgeous wine from Sottimano. This expression is polished and glossy, showing enormous purity to all the senses. You can get very enthusiastic about this bottle, thanks to the graceful nature of its cassis, dried raspberry and plum-like aromas. These wines from the village of Neive show excellent results in this cooler 2018 vintage.
JD 92 (5/2021): The 2018 Barbaresco Fausoni is flush with ripe peach, rose petal, dried strawberry, and white truffle. The structure is lean but inviting, with dried raspberry, orange zest, and dried tea as well as fine tannins. Refreshing and open, this is ready for rather youthful enjoyment. Drink 2021-2034. |

There is outstanding volume to the rich and succulent broad-shouldered flavors that possess focused power on the beautifully long and sappy mineral-infused finish that is shaped by citrus-tinged acidity. This isn't quite as structured as the Chevalier, but it too is promising. Drink 2028+. |
