| VM 94 (2/2010): All readers need to do is taste the 2007 Barbaresco to get a sense of the promise the vintage holds at Gaja. Soft and seamless on the palate, the Barbaresco shows wonderful integrity in its fruit in an opulent, yet mid-weight style. Fragrant, perfumed aromatics are woven throughout, while an attractive spiciness develops in the glass. There is incredible depth to the fruit and simply phenomenal overall balance. Readers will not want to miss this Barbaresco; arguably Gaja's finest since 1997. |

| JS 94 (9/2011): Intense aromas of plums and dark fruits. Pure fruit here. Full body, with velvety tannins and hints of new wood. This is structured and chewy but shows loads of fruit underneath. This shows wonderful potential. Try in 2013. |

JS 93 (7/2012): Balanced and fruity with hints of spice and berries and a milk chocolate undertone. Full-bodied, with round tannins and a juicy finish. Very approachable now. But better in VM 92 (11/2011): Good full bright red. Soil-driven aromas of sour cherry, pomegranate, minerals and leather, lifted by treble notes of flowers and white fruits. Dense and nicely filled in, with a restrained sweetness and enticing minty lift contributing to the impression of vibrancy. Finishes quite long, with substantial tongue-dusting tannins. This is excellent. |

JS 95 (9/2018): A rich and layered Barbaresco with cedar and plums, as well as light leather and rose aromas that follow to a full yet balanced palate and a chewy finish. Very polished. Drink in 2020, but already beautiful. VM 94 (10/2018): Gaja's 2015 Barbaresco is gorgeous. Deep, pliant and resonant, the 2015 exudes class from the very first taste. Today, the aromatics are not especially open or expressive, but it is the wine's depth and overall sense of harmony that really carry the day. Hints of orange peel, spice and rosewater give the 2015 an exotic aromatic top register that is hugely appealing. Readers will have a hard time keeping their hands off this gem. The 2015 is a wonderfully complete and harmonious wine, but it really does need a few years in the cellar to fully unwind. Antonio Galloni. |

VM 96 (11/2019): Gaja's 2016 Barbaresco is positively stellar. A wine of poise and grace, the 2016 has so much to offer. Expressive spice and floral notes open up first, but what really stands out is the wine's nuance and delineation. There is a sense of translucency to the 2016 that is impossible to miss. Sweet red cherry, mint, cinnamon and rose petal develop in the glass, adding further shades of nuance. Quite simply, the 2016 is one of the very finest Gaja Barbarescos in recent memory. This is such a gorgeous wine. Don't miss it. Antonio Galloni. JS 96 (8/2019): This is all about finesse with power. Such great length here with ever so refined tannins and precise strawberry, cedar, dried-rose and mineral character. Medium body. Fresh and vivid finish. Hard not to drink now, but wait until at least 2021. WA 96 (6/2019): I tasted this wine over two sittings, one at the winery and one at my home office a few weeks later. Although I can't claim any extraordinary differences between the two sessions, I noticed a few minimal shifts that are essential to understanding the wine's future aging ability. The 2016 Barbaresco starts off slow at first, showing a small margin of aromatic evolution in the glass. But come back two hours later, and you can almost hear the soft sounds of the symphony playing just below the surface. The 2016 vintage is characterized by the solid intensity and firmness of its aromas, which transcend fruit and veer toward balsamic herb, licorice, tar and smoke instead. The tannins offer a moment of sweetness and softness, before you are aware of their undeniable firmness. In all, there is a certain glossiness or satiny quality to the mouthfeel that underlines the wine's carefully crafted integration. I would describe this as a classic and also a somewhat austere Barbaresco that fully deserves extra cellar time to stretch those tight muscles and grow in volume. This wine will award those who wait. |

JD 95+ (12/2020): A pretty, perfumed example of this cuvee, the 2017 Barbaresco offers lots more red fruits as well as spice, dried flowers, incense, and loamy soil. With more licorice and minerality emerging with time in the glass, it hits the palate with medium-bodied richness, an elegant texture, plenty of firm tannins, and a great finish. It doesn't get more textbook Nebbiolo than this. This classic beauty is going to benefit from 5-7 years of bottle age and have 2-3 decades of longevity. VM 92 (10/2020): The 2017 Barbaresco is a very pretty, gracious wine. Crushed red berries, dried flowers, mint and sweet spice all grace this decidedly airy, ethereal Barbaresco from the Gaja family. In 2017, the Barbaresco is a bit on the lighter side of things. In exchange, though, it will drink well right out of the gate. Antonio Galloni. WA 95 (7/2020): The Gaja 2017 Barbaresco is nuanced and delicate with ever-expanding aromatic intensity that amply fills the balloon of your glass. The wine takes a little while to open fully, and it slowly releases forest berry, powdered licorice, toasted aniseed, spearmint, dried lavender and rosemary essence to build a lasting bouquet. The mouthfeel is streamlined and almost steely, with an extremely linear approach that adds to its length and persistency. The tannins are tucked into the wine's delicate fiber, but you do feel the extra textural firmness of the hot vintage nonetheless. As we have seen in past vintages, more definition is added by a pretty mineral note that is a common thread in these wines from Gaja. |

| JD 94-96 (5/2023): A pale ruby, and blended from 14 vineyard sites, the 2020 Barbaresco was tasted as a barrel sample. Spicy and pure, it is full of red berries with Asian spice and white pepper. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, with elegance and refinement throughout, approachable and fine tannins, no harsh edges, and a long-lasting floral finish. This seem to be a vintage that will drink well early but have plenty of longevity as well. Audrey Frick. |

JD 97 (5/2024): A brightly jeweled ruby hue, the 2021 Barbaresco is super-expressive, with loads of wild raspberries that leap from the glass along with notes of strawberries, pressed roses, fresh orange, and violet. As it opens, it evens picks up some spice box, cigar incense, and cherry notes. Crystalline in nature and ripe, this next-level red delivers ripe, sweet tannins, great tension, and fresh, vibrant acidity, without any austerity. A luxury racecar, it’s fantastic and possibly the wine of the year. Drink 2025-2055. WA 96 (1/2025): This was an epic vintage, and the entire Gaja family is ready to sing its praises. The 2021 Barbaresco sets the tone with sweet cherry flavors framed by spice, earthy notes and elegantly sweet tannins. Giovanni Gaja says the 2021 growing season had two phases: the first six months of the year saw rain and cool temperatures with some frost and soggy conditions until May; however, from June forward, the season saw sunny days without excessive heat spikes. Indeed, 2021 marks the beginning of drought years that lasted until 2023. Barbaresco was hit by hail on July 31, 2021, but the Gaja vineyards were unharmed. In line with the character of the vintage, this wine shows succulent fruit that is balanced and not too ripe. There is depth and volume here. VM 94 (10/2024): The 2021 Barbaresco is a powerful, layered wine from Gaja. In some recent years, the Barbaresco has been pretty approachable out of the gate, but the 2021 is a deep, serious wine with a lot of potential for future development. Pretty floral and spice notes linger on the finish. I admire its vibrant, dynamic personality. (Drink between 2027-2041). Antonio Galloni. |

JS 98 (7/2016): Medium ruby color. The class, strength and finesse in this wine is ever present with berry, dark chocolate and walnut character. Full-bodied, dense and chewy. Very fresh. Chocolate, mango, ripe strawberry and bright finish. Needs four or five years to soften. Classic tannins. Better in 2021. WA 95 (6/2016): The 2013 Barbaresco Costa Russi is a celebration of vineyard site. In the past, this wine was blended with 5% Barbera, but this is no longer the case starting now. For the first time in recent memory, we are tasting a pure expression of Nebbiolo as harvested from the rows of vines in the Costa Russi cru, located directly below Sorì Tildìn at the base of the Barbaresco village. The vines are over 65-years-old and are planted in limestone clay and marl soils. Costa Russi is known for delicate, light-bodied wines that exhibit floral aromas of rose hip and lavender, as well as darker fruit tones at the back. Those qualities are beautifully evident in this vintage. The mouthfeel is characterized by a firm sense of tannic structure that is common to all of Gaja's new releases in the 2013 vintage. |

VM 96 (10/2018): The 2015 Barbaresco Costa Russi is once again striking in 2015. Vertical and lifted, with tremendous energy, the 2015 has so much to offer. Once the most easygoing of the three Barbaresco crus, Costa Russi has inched up in quality in recent years. The 2015 shows the suave mid-palate and raciness that is so typical of this wine, and yet it also has much more obvious structural underpinnings than once was the case. I can't wait to see how it ages. Antonio Galloni. WA 93 (6/2018): The 2015 Barbaresco Costa Russi was about to be bottled before I tasted it. Like the other wines from this warm vintage, you are treated to extra plushness and roundness with dark berry fruit intensity. This wine also offers unexpected mineral tones that come off as crushed oyster shell and talc powder. These add to the drying, almost nervous, tension you feel in the mouth. |

VM 98 (11/2019): The 2016 Barbaresco Costa Russi is ripe, creamy and enveloping, as it so often is, and yet also preserves the super classic sense of structure that runs through all these wines. In 2016, Costa Russi has an extra touch of mid-palate sweetness that gives the wine its sense of immediacy. Succulent red cherry, rosewater, kirsch, mint and dried flowers meld together in the glass. Soft and sensual, with tons of allure, Costa Russi is another winner from Gaja. Time in the glass brings out the wine's density and tannins, both of which it has in spades. Antonio Galloni. WA 96+ (8/2019): The 2016 Barbaresco Costa Russi is a very botanical wine in terms of its aromas, with lovely perfumes of rose, elderflower, sambuco and anise seed, along with a touch of glycerine. It then follows up with some sweetness that feels very embracing in this wine. This is the more ephemeral, delicate and floral member of the extended Barbaresco family from Gaja, with a crunchy tannic bite, but nothing too severe. There is a really good vitality and energy to this very expressive wine. Costa Russi remains the smallest of Gaja's single-vineyard wines, and Gaia Gaja warns that there will be considerably less of it starting with the 2017 vintage. Production for this wine had always varied greatly to begin with, due in part to the fragile nature of the 80-year-old vines, but about half of those were removed and replanted. It will be a while before the new vines are old enough to go online. So, with some 10,000 bottles made in 2016 and 6,000 bottles in 2015, we can count on those numbers to be split by half over the next three to four years, for sure. |

JS 100 (7/2016): Majestic aromas of crushed berry, meat, orange peel. Full body, very tannic yet ripe tannins and exquisite fruit. Amazing depth and density. They said they macerated a little more than normal because the fruit was perfect. A classic nebbiolo that reminds me of the great 1996. Really cool. About 30% less production. Don’t touch for five to 10 years. A celebratory wine for Gaja’s return to the Barbaresco appellation. WA 97 (6/2016): Congratulations to the Gaja family and their 2013 Barbaresco Sorì San Lorenzo. This is a sheer and powerful expression of Nebbiolo that boasts a very firm and precise textural quality. The wine is 100% Nebbiolo, as blended Barbera is no longer part of the Sorì San Lorenzo DNA. The tannins are sharply delineated with a crunchy snap that you feel on the palate. This should definitely serve to keep the wine firmly rooted and committed to a slow aging trajectory. That structural firmness is the defining characteristic of this wine, and that unique identity is even more evident now that this wine is officially classified as Barbaresco. |

JD 97+ (5/2025): The 2022 Barbaresco Sori San Lorenzo is more contemplative of a wine, with aromas of deeper spice and an earthier component compared to the Tildin, but as it opens, it takes on pure notes of cherry liqueur, preserved orange, and forest earth. The palate is elegant but with a velvety texture upfront, even freshness, with a deeper richness to its texture. Long on the palate, with a long finish, it’s built for the long haul and is likely going score even higher in the future. Audrey Frick. VM 95 (10/2025): The 2022 Barbaresco Sorì San Lorenzo is a dense, potent wine. Black cherry, scorched earth, leather, incense and gravel stain the palate. Sorì San Lorenzo is often virile and somber, as it is here, but the 2022 does not quite have the dimension of most years. Perhaps that will emerge over time. We will see. (Drink between 2028-2047). Antonio Galloni. |

| VM 100 (11/2019): The 2016 Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn is a fabulous, incredibly complete wine that soars out of the glass with explosive structure and vertical lift. The tannins are very much present, but also matched beautifully by the wine's aromatic intensity and overall drive. Dark macerated cherry, spice, leather, licorice, plum and mocha add darker shades of nuance. In 2016, Sorì Tildìn is a bit more brooding and bigger than it often is, and yet all the elements are impeccably balanced. It is quite simply a majestic wine of real grandeur and total class, but it is not obvious. Sorì Tildìn will appeal most to readers who understand what the truest essence of Nebbiolo is all about. In a word: magnificent! Antonio Galloni. |

JS 95 (9/2018): More forward and in a more earthly realm than the dizzying heights of the Conteisa this vintage, but it’s so endearing and immediately delights. The aromas range from elderberries and black cherries to brambleberries and Chinese spices. Full-bodied and structured with powerful tannins that encase bright and forthright blue fruit, which is polished over by a sheen of glimmering acidity. Long finish. Delicious now, but better in 2022. WA 94 (6/2018): This is a slightly more subdued vintage of this legendary wine, albeit just as sophisticated as past editions. The 2014 Barolo Sperss opens to gorgeous aromas of dark fruit, wet earth and white truffle. The vineyards in Serralunga d'Alba produced much less fruit than average and suffered from bouts of downy mildew during the rainy seasons. But Serralunga d'Alba fruit is also harvested late, and that extra time was important for achieving grape ripeness targets. The wine presents depth and complexity within the context of a thinner vintage. Having said that, the bouquet is spectacular. VM 93 (2/2018): The 2014 Barolo Sperss is an attractive wine from Gaja's vineyards in Serralunga. There is good depth to the succulent black cherry, plum, smoke and licorice flavors, although it doesn't quite have the explosiveness or power of the very best years. Because of the wine's slender personality, the oak is a bit more evident than is typically the case. The Sperss also feels a bit forced in terms of extraction and oak, especially next to the Conteisa, where the choices have turned out to be more successful in bringing out the best the vintage has to offer. Antonio Galloni. |

| VM 98 (11/2019): The 2015 Barolo Sperss shows all of the darkness and muscle that are so typical of Serralunga. Black cherry, plum, licorice, incense, gravel, cured meats and scorched earth infuse this potent, backward wine with tremendous character. My impression is that the extraction and oak are all a bit more pushed here relative to the other wines in the range. Antonio Galloni. |

WA 98+ (6/2025): With fruit from Serralunga d'Alba, the Gaja 2021 Barolo Sperss is marked by a distinctive ferrous note of rusty nail or soft earth that frames a core of dark fruit. The wine is exceptionally balanced and beautiful with depth and a high level of fruit purity. Unlike the Conteisa, which ends with a sweeter floral note, this wine is decidedly salty and stony on the finish, giving it a harder edge in terms of structure. VM 97 (10/2025): The 2021 Barolo Sperss is a huge, dense wine. Black fruit, graphite, scorched earth, tobacco and incense emerge, but with great reluctance. This powerhouse Serralunga Barolo packs a tremendous punch. It's classic Serralunga all the way. Readers should plan on being patient. (Drink between 2028-2051). Antonio Galloni. |

| VM 91 (10/2018): The 2015 Darmagi (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) is gracious, medium in body and fragrant. In this vintage, Darmagi is decidedly medium in body, with more of a red-fruit leaning profile than in the past. Soft, silky and inviting, the 2015 has a lot to offer. At the same time, the 2015, while attractive, is not as varietally expressive as it can be in the finest years. Antonio Galloni. |

Gaia & Rey Chardonnay |
$350 |

| |
JD 94 (11/2019): The 2017 Gaia & Ray reminds me of a top Sonoma Coast Chardonnay with is incredible salty minerality as well as classic Chardonnay notes of stone fruits, caramelized pineapple, white flowers, and hints of baking spices. Rich, medium-bodied, beautifully balanced, it’s a beautiful and classy white well worth drinking and cellaring. First released in 1983, this cuvee is named after Lucia and Angelo Gaja's daughter, Gaia Gaja, and Angelo Gaja's grandmother Clotilde Rey. (Drink between 2019-2031). WA 93+ (6/2019): This wine was first made in 1983, and back then, no malolactic fermentation occurred. Jump forward in time to the 2017 Langhe Gaia & Rey, and this is another vintage in which malo did not start. (Partial malolactic returns in 2018). Since those first years of production, the oak usage has also been tweaked, now with less barrique in favor of more botte grande. Thanks to these changes, the aromatic profile of this wine veers toward citrus and rich tropical fruit, especially in a warm vintage such as this. However counterintuitive, this edition also shows a very bright and precise touch of acidity that serves to give the wine balanced and mouth-cleansing salinity. VM 92 (3/2020): The 2017 Gaia & Rey (Chardonnay) is a very pretty wine. In. this warm, dry year Gaja has done a terrific job in retaining a good bit of freshness. The 2017 is bright, crisp and varietal, with well-balanced oak and light tropical notes that add nuance. This is such a pretty wine, especially for the year. (Drink between 2020-2027). Antonio Galloni. |

Barbera d’Alba Superiore Vigna Cuculo ex-Domaine |
$44.99 |
60 |
|
| |
| JD 93 (4/2026): The 2023 Barbera D'Alba Superiore Vigna Cuculo pours a youthful red/purple hue and was fermented in stainless steel before aging 18 months in large Slavonian oak casks. It opens with wild black cherries, delicate rustic earth, incense, and violets. Medium-bodied, it’s vibrant and well-balanced, with fine tannins and a savory citrus lift that carries through the finish. A traditionally raised Barbera with both energy and structure, about 8,000 bottles were produced. Drink 2026-2036. Audrey Frick. |

|
| |
| JD 91 (4/2026): The 2023 Langhe Nebbiolo is aged for 18 months in large Slavonian oak casks and pours a youthful ruby red color. It offers a ripe perfume that’s a bit shy, but the palate really shines, offering ripe red berries, a bit of rustic earth, fresh tobacco, and incense. Medium-bodied, zesty, and refreshing, with a good balance of sunny pure fruit, fine tannins, and refreshing acidity, it’s a very appealing Nebbiolo to drink now or over the next 8-10 years. A star in this category, no doubt, it’s delicious and I would snap it up. Drink 2026-2036. Audrey Frick. |

JD 95 (4/2026): Displaying a bright red-orange hue, the 2023 Barbaresco Basarin comes from 45-year-old vines in this four kilometer long site purchased by the estate in 2014. The wine offers bright spice notes of cinnamon, fresh tobacco leaf, anise, and black raspberries. Medium-bodied, it carries excellent tension and coiled energy, with even tannins and a refreshing finish. Drink 2026-2040. Audrey Frick. VM 94 (10/2025): The 2023 Barbaresco Basarin is deep, resonant and super-expressive. Expansive contours wrap around a core of blue/purplish fruit. Lavender, menthol, espresso and spicebox all meld together in the glass, with floral top notes that add finesse. This sensual, layered Barbaresco is a total delight. It is the most approachable for the 2023 Barbarescos at this address. Antonio Galloni. |

JD 96 (4/2026): Coming from the cru surrounding the estate in the heart of the Neive zone with limestone and clay soils, the 2023 Barbaresco Cotta reveals fresh wild herbs, mint, cherries, and fresh spice layered with delicate rustic notes. More full-bodied in profile, it has a tremendous core of energy and brightness, with broader shoulders and a chiseled structure to the tannins. The vibrant, almost metallic energy of the wine gives it remarkable lift. This is a stunning wine that is highly expressive on release but also shows potential for notable longevity. Drink 2027-2047. Audrey Frick. VM 95 (10/2025): The 2023 Barbaresco Cottá is impressive. A blast of dark cherry, plum, spice, lavender, incense, spice, new leather and menthol stains the palate. Readers will find a big Barbaresco with broad shoulders and tons of intensity. This is an especially virile, almost somber, edition of the Cottá. Superb. Antonio Galloni. |

Barbaresco Fausoni ex-Domaine |

| |
JD 95 (4/2026): Also from Neive, where sandy soils similar to Basarin mix with clay and marne, the 2023 Barbaresco Fausoni is quite seductive and pure aromatically. It offers sweetly perfumed notes of incense, darker cherries, tea leaf, wet stones, and hints of petrichor. Medium-bodied, it’s elegant and balanced with ripe tannins, mouthwatering herbal accents, and a gracefully long finish. Drink 2026-2040. Audrey Frick. VM 94 (10/2025): The 2023 Barbaresco Fausoni is delicate and floral in its first impression, before the mid-palate gradually starts to open. Red cherry fruit, blood orange, mint, white pepper, slate and dried herbs unfurl in the glass. Medium in body and beautifully persistent, the 2023 offers tons of potential. As always, the tannins are a touch nervy, but then again, this is very young Nebbiolo. Antonio Galloni. |

VM 95+ (10/2025): The 2023 Barbaresco Pajorè has come together nicely since I tasted it last year. Dark balsamic inflections immediately announce a potent, virile Barbaresco. Readers should be in no rush, as the 2023 is going to need a number of years to come into its own. Macerated black cherry, cloves, incense, scorched earth and espresso add to feeling of gravitas that echoes as the wine gradually opens in the glass. There's gorgeous density here, and pedigree to burn. Pajorè was the last Nebbiolo harvested in 2023. Antonio Galloni. JD 95+ (4/2026): From Treiso, the 2023 Barbaresco Pajoré pours a medium red color and has a distinct personality within the range, with notes of sweet red berries, hints of blue fruit, grenadine, and orange zest. Medium-bodied, the wine offers refined tannins and refreshing, mouthwatering acidity, finishing with a clean sense of salinity and wonderful length. It's more tightly wound and inward at the moment, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see this improve notably with a few years in the cellar. Drink 2027-2047. Audrey Frick. |

| VM 93 (10/2025): The 2023 Langhe Nebbiolo, all young vines from Basarin, is terrific. Pliant and expressive, the 2023 is a superb choice for readers looking for a wine that overdelivers. Macerated cherry, plum, lavender and blood orange open first. Exotic floral and spice overtones develop with a bit of time in the glass. More than anything else, I am so impressed with the wine's textural depth and balance. The 2023 was done a modified, light style of submerged cap maceration for about a week that worked wonders. Élevage was nine months in cask. And the young vines are now nearly 30 years old! Antonio Galloni. |

WA 94 (1/2021): A tensile, racy wine—two-thirds from Pernand-Vergelesses, one-third from Aloxe-Corton—the 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with scents of white flowers, orange oil, buttery pastry and nutmeg. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, it's chiseled and saline, with impressive cut and grip. BH 91-93 (6/2020): (the proportions have changed again and in 2018 are in a 35/65% proportion from Les Languettes in Aloxe and En Charlemagne in Pernand.) A restrained, ultra-fresh and distinctly floral nose reflects notes of various white orchard fruit aromas, lemon zest and discreet wood toast. There is outstanding volume to the rich and succulent broad-shouldered flavors that possess focused power on the beautifully long and sappy mineral-infused finish that is shaped by citrus-tinged acidity. This isn't quite as structured as the Chevalier, but it too is promising. Drink 2028+. |

This isn't quite as structured as the Chevalier, but it too is promising. Drink 2028+. |
