1995 Robert Mondavi Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
Vintage: 1995
Region: USA Red
Color/Type: Red
Size: 750 ML
Lightly Bin-Soiled Label
Tasting Notes:
WA 93 (12/1997): The 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is slightly less impressive than when I tasted it last year, although still an Outstanding wine. I may have caught it at a closed stage following bottling. There are 15,000-20,000 cases of Reserve Cabernet made, and in 1995, a quintessentially elegant style has been produced. The wine is less weighty than the 1994, 1991, or 1990. It has great promise and raw materials, with superb fruit and richness, medium body, and subtle lead pencil notes to go along with black currant, mineral, and pain grille scents and flavors. Based on this tasting, I would lower my overall rating, but it is still an exceptional California Cabernet Sauvignon made in a compellingly elegant, graceful style. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2018. Mondavi is adding a number of new regionally labeled Cabernet Sauvignons to their portfolio. In addition to their Oakville cuvee, they have a Stag's Leap District Cabernet, and a single vineyard wine from their famed To-Kalon plantation.

| WA 91 (12/2008): The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville reveals more licorice, spice, box, cedar, black cherries, and black currants in its complex, moderately intense aromatics. Full-bodied with outstanding concentration and moderate tannin, it displays the potential to improve for a decade, and last for 15-20 years thereafter. |

| WA 92 (12/2003): The Chateau Margaux look-alike, the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District, exhibits a dense ruby/purple color as well as a sweet nose of acacia flowers, white chocolate, and asphalt presented in a medium to full-bodied, well-delineated, lush style that manages to conceal serious tannin in the finish. A blend of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Merlot, this beauty can be enjoyed now and over the next 12-15 years. |

| WA 95 (12/2003): There are 1,000 cases of the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon To-Kalon Reserve. Fashioned from 31-year old vines, it is a powerful, firmly structured offering revealing notes of charcoal, creamy black currants, loamy soil, and tobacco leaf. Although its pH of 3.78 is relatively high, seemingly suggesting a more forward style, it is broodingly backward and less accessible than the Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s a classic Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon that may not be quite as generous or complex as the Reserve or perhaps the M-Bar, but it is almost too backward to fully evaluate at present. Give it 5-6 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 20-25 years. |

Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon |

| |
VM 90-93 (6/1999): Bright ruby-red. Aromas of raw currant, coffee and smoked meat. Lush yet somewhat stunted flavors of black cherry and cassis. A substantial wine with plenty of fat and structure, but seems a bit pinched, even short today. The tannins build with aeration. Needs time in bottle. WA 88 (8/1999): In 1995, the renowned Cabernet Sauvignon Georges de Latour Private Reserve is extremely tannic, with noticeable oak, earth, and spice in the closed, unyielding aromatics. The color is a healthy dark ruby. The wine is medium-bodied with copious cassis buttressed by high tannin, generous oak, and sweet black currant fruit, a firm finish, and a closed personality. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2012. |

| WA 90 (8/1999): While it is fashionable to criticize this wine because of its price, and the secrecy surrounding the amount produced (who really cares?), the wine is unquestionably Outstanding. The 1995 boasts a dark ruby/purple color as well as an attractive bouquet with lavish quantities of toasty new oak and black currants. There is moderate tannin, good purity, and an open-knit, sexy style. If the wine had not fallen a bit short on the mid-palate, it would have merited an even higher score. It should drink well for 10-15 years. |

Diamond Mountain Vyd. Cabernet Sauvignon |
$75 |

| |
WA 90 (12/1999): The 1995 Diamond Mountain Vineyard is an outstanding effort. Made with the consultation of Philippe Melka, this blend of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, and 9% Cabernet Franc offers scents of melted tar, loamy soil, black currants, and minerals. Well-crafted, with moderate tannin, this austere, medium-bodied effort exhibits a sweet mid-palate, excellent overall harmony, and the tell-tale lead pencil, toasty oak, and black currant fruit indicative of a high-class Cabernet. Although not weighty, the emphasis is finesse and complexity. It will benefit from 2-3 years of cellaring, and will last for 15-16 years. VM 88 (6/2016): Good medium red. Mellow aromas of plum, redcurrant, mocha, sweet butter and woodsmoke. Quite smooth and moderately sweet, with a firm spine of acidity carrying through the wine. A slightly herbal Cabernet Franc element lifts the finish but clashes a bit with the firm, granular tannins, leaving the back end a bit dusty, not to mention green. But there's no shortage of energy here. Stephen Tanzer. |

| VM 89 (11/1999): Full red-ruby. Raspberry, mint and fresh herbs on the nose; showed a slight dill note with aeration. Supple and lush, with intriguing hints of charred meat, smoke and leather to go with the currant and raspberry flavors. Rather stylish wine, with satisfying sweetness and a layered texture like right-bank Bordeaux. Quite ripe for '95, but with plenty of underlying structure. Stephen Tanzer. |

WA 94 (1/2021): A tensile, racy wine—two-thirds from Pernand-Vergelesses, one-third from Aloxe-Corton—the 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with scents of white flowers, orange oil, buttery pastry and nutmeg. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, it's chiseled and saline, with impressive cut and grip. BH 91-93 (6/2020): (the proportions have changed again and in 2018 are in a 35/65% proportion from Les Languettes in Aloxe and En Charlemagne in Pernand.) A restrained, ultra-fresh and distinctly floral nose reflects notes of various white orchard fruit aromas, lemon zest and discreet wood toast. There is outstanding volume to the rich and succulent broad-shouldered flavors that possess focused power on the beautifully long and sappy mineral-infused finish that is shaped by citrus-tinged acidity. This isn't quite as structured as the Chevalier, but it too is promising. Drink 2028+. |
