WA 94 (2/2005): The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate (a 7,500-case cuvee of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon) is terrific. Wonderful floral notes intermixed with blueberries, black currants, and hints of licorice and spice box are reminiscent of some of the great Villa Mt. Eden Cabernets produced here in the mid-1970s. Deep purple in color, full-bodied, with sumptuous texture and a long, concentrated finish displaying beautifully integrated acidity and tannin, this blockbuster effort should age graciously for 12-15 or more years. Kudos to Plumpjack!

| WA 87-89 (8/2002): The only 2000 I tasted was the Cabernet Sauvignon Estate. It reveals the vintage's charm, sweet tannin, and lovely ripe fruit, but those characteristics are slightly negated by the fact that it does not have the depth, persistence, layers, or concentration of a great Napa vintage. It should firm up after bottling, and be at its finest between 2005-2015. |

| WA 94+ (12/2007): The backward 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Estate (390 cases) reminds me of a hypothetical blend of a top Pauillac and Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. Notes of creosote, charcoal, black currant liqueur, pain grille, and graphite are all present in this dense purple-colored, rich, full-bodied wine. With moderately high tannin and good acidity, it will benefit from 2-4 years of cellaring, and should keep for three decades. |

JD 96 (1/2019): In addition to the Bordeaux blends, this estate makes a terrific Syrah, and the 2016 Syrah Napa Valley reveals a deep purple color as well as exotic blackberry, bacon fat, olive, and bloody meat-like aromas and flavors. This medium to full-bodied beauty is plush, seamless, and incredibly sexy on the palate, yet it's also pure and perfectly balanced, with no sensation of weight or heaviness. It’s terrific and will drink well for 10-12 years, although bottles wouldn’t last that long at my house. (Drink between 2019-2031).
VM 95 (12/2018): As has often been the case, the 2016 Syrah is the hidden gem in the PlumpJack range. The interplay of rich dense fruit and more savory notes from the 30% whole clusters yields a wine of real distinction and class. There is so much to like in the 2016, especially the wine's depth, vibrancy and impeccable balance. Readers can expect a dark Syrah with plenty of blue/purplish fruit, lavender, licorice and spice overtones. (Drink between 2021-2031). Antonio Galloni.
WA 95 (10/2018): Made of 100% Syrah, the very deep purple-black colored 2016 Syrah comes bounding out of the glass with powerful Black Forest cake, preserved plums and blueberry pie notes followed up by hints of espresso, peppered salami, licorice, charcoal and fertile loam. Full-bodied, rich and velvety textured, with loads of opulent fruit layers on offer in the mouth, it has an epically long, savory finish. |

WA 98-100 (2/2005): A sleeper selection, it is by no means a second wine in the pejorative sense of the word. A potential candidate for perfection is the exquisite 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard. A 1,650-case blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot made from extremely low yields, it boasts superb intensity, flavor, elegance, and nobility in addition to a marvelously complex nose of minerals, licorice, cedar, creme de cassis, vanilla, and spice. Exceptionally rich, nuanced, and precise, it is a magnificent expression of Cabernet Sauvignon that offers the elegance of a Bordeaux with the power and potency of Napa Valley Cabernet. A tour de force, this wine can be drunk now or cellared for up to two decades.
VM 95 (6/2005): (includes 2.6% cabernet franc and 1.6% petit verdot) Good saturated ruby-red. Superripe, complex, slightly roasted nose combines black raspberry, dark chocolate, smoked meat, maple syrup, toffee, tobacco and licorice. Dense and aromatic in the mouth, with compelling sweetness and suavity of texture. Wonderfully opulent and seamless red wine. This finishes with huge but utterly fine tannins and lush, lingering flavor. |

| WA 96 (6/2012): Made from the estate’s finest fruit and aged 23 or more months in a combination of French and American oak, it comes from multiple sources in Sonoma, including the Monte Rosso Vineyard (now owned by Gallo). A wine of great stature and richness, it boasts an inky/ruby/purple color along with a stunning bouquet of loamy, dusty soil, lead pencil shavings, creme de cassis, kirsch liqueur, licorice and barrique smells. Full-bodied and opulent, with some tannin still to be shed, it is a classic, All-American style of northern California Cabernet Sauvignon that is approaching middle adolescence. | WA 96 (6/2012): The limited production (under 400 cases) 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Wright Vineyard spent 19 months in 100% new French oak. From a similar terroir, it exhibits an opaque purple color as well as notes of roasted espresso, creme de cassis, blackberries and spring flowers, wonderful acidity, a multidimensional, freshly crushed black fruit mouthfeel, stunning opulence and density, and a finish that lasts 40-45 seconds. This killer Cabernet Sauvignon performed fabulously well after bottling and continues to age at a glacial pace. It will not hit its peak for another decade, and should last over the following quarter of a century. |

WA 100 (4/2006): Unlike some minuscule production “cult" wines or luxury cuvees culled from a winery’s primary product that have earned perfect scores over the years, Quilceda Creek’s Cabernet Sauvignon is the winery’s raison d’etre and is produced in significant quantities (3,400 cases in 2002, 3,425 in 2003). For accomplishing this feat the Golitzens should be doubly proud. Dark ruby-colored and sporting a nose of violets, sweet blueberries, dark cherries, and slight undertones of asphalt, the 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon blossoms on the palate to expose a wine of ethereal delicacy yet immense power. Medium to full-bodied, it expands to reveal concentrated layers of cassis, blackberries, red cherries, raspberries, violets, spices, and touches of candied plums. This rich, exquisitely balanced, sweet, and broad wine is harmonious, graceful, and awesomely long. Projected maturity: now-2022. Congratulations Alex and Paul, welcome to the big leagues.

Broad, sappy and concentrated, with sweet, pliant flavors of blackberry and violet, nicely shaped by lively, peppery acids. Very dry in a positive way. Offers superb breadth but also a distinctly airy texture and a light touch. Youthful, structured, sophisticated California syrah.
WA 87 (8/2004): Qualitatively similar to the Central Coast, but more elegant although short on the back end is the 2002 Syrah Purisima Mountain. It possesses a saturated color, along with plum, cherry, spice box, and herb scents. However, the flavors do not deliver what the aromatics suggest. While elegant and medium-bodied, it drops off quickly on the palate. |

WA 94 (12/2005): The 2002 Monte Bello exhibits aromas of tar, cedar, damp earth, white chocolate, black cherries, and sweet black currants. This full-bodied, dense, tannic 2002 is even more closed this year than it was last. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2037. This impressive wine is unlikely to win many blind tastings given its current austerity.
VM 94 (8/2004): Deep, full ruby. Explosively perfumed nose combines black raspberry, violet and dark chocolate. Wonderfully layered and penetrating, with expressive flavors of raspberry, currant, bitter chocolate, spices and tobacco. Still an infant, but already offers a rare combination of sweetness and inner-mouth energy. Finishes very fresh and very long, with big, dusty tannins and great lift. This is high in alcohol for Ridge at 13.3%, but a full degree or more lower than virtually any other collectible California cabernet from this vintage. |

WA 100 (12/2014): In contrast to the more linear, structured, but massive 2001, the 2002 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select is pure fruit-bomb material, but stunningly proportioned, beautifully pure, with notes of melted chocolate, blackcurrant jam, sweet black cherries, licorice, camphor and charcoal. Very full-bodied, like the 2001, but much more lavishly fruited, it is more accessible and hedonistically, as well as intellectually, satisfying. If the 2001 is the long-distance runner, this comes across more like a middle-distancer. It had performed fabulously well since it was released by the winery, and even though it’s still an adolescent in terms of its evolution, this wine is a head-turner in wine tastings, and a spectacular effort from Napa. Drink now or drink in 20-25 years.
VM 94+ (7/2016): Good dark red. Perfumed, liqueur-like aromas of black plum, dark berries, licorice and cocoa powder. Dense, thick and very ripe but still a bit youthfully brooding; shows the darkest fruit character to this point in the tasting. This extremely dense, thick, youthfully brooding Cabernet finishes with serious ripe tannins and good medicinal reserve. If the 2001 is claret-like in the context of this bottling, then the 2002 is classic liqueur-like Napa Cabernet, even if it's in a bit of a shell today. Less detailed today than the 2001 but I'd love to try these wines side by side again in six or seven years. Stephen Tanzer. |

| WA 91-93 (12/2003): For the second year in a row, Larry Turley has turned the dogs loose for the 2002 Zinfandel Dogtown Vineyard, the finest Zinfandel I have ever tasted from Lodi. This 750-case offering tips the scales at a whopping 16.5% alcohol, all of it well-hidden beneath extravagantly rich fruit. This deep ruby/purple-tinged Zin smells like brandy-macerated jammy black cherries intermixed with dried Provencal herbs, ground pepper, and other exotic spices. An exceptionally powerful, mouthfilling, palate staining effort with enormous richness and purity as well as a blockbuster finish, it is clearly not a Zinfandel for those who enjoy wimpy wines. It should be consumed over the next 4-5 years. |

WA 94 (1/2021): A tensile, racy wine—two-thirds from Pernand-Vergelesses, one-third from Aloxe-Corton—the 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with scents of white flowers, orange oil, buttery pastry and nutmeg. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, it's chiseled and saline, with impressive cut and grip.
