Rose petal, kirsch, mint and cinnamon all grace this striking Rosé. It’s quite attractive, but not as pure or crystalline as the Blanc de Blancs. Pretty floral notes grace the finish. Citrus peel, mint, white pepper and crushed rocks all race across the palate. The 2019 is so vivid, so expressive, especially in the way it marries tension and textural presence. | VM 87 (2/2025): The 2019 Blanc de Blancs Michael Mara is challenging to taste. I very much admire its energy, but there is a vegetal quality that is hard to reconcile with the wine's overall polish. It may be that this fruit needed more time on the vine, or that the dosage is too low. In the many years I have tasted Ultramarine, which is very close to the beginning, I don’t remember a wine like this. In Champagne parlance, the 2019 Michael Mara reminds me of the 2011s. VM 95 (5/2022): The 2017 Chardonnay Reserve is an intriguing wine. For a vintage that was so torrid, the Reserve remains very much light on its feet. Tangerine oil, hazelnut, passionfruit, chamomile, butter, baked apple tart and pastry lend quite a bit of nuance. There's good freshness and plenty of complexity. Time brings out the wine's textural richness and exotic flair. The 2017 spent ten months in oak and then a year in tank prior to being bottled. (Drink between 2023-2029). Antonio Galloni.
JD 94 (12/2021): What I believe to be the current release, the 2017 Chardonnay Reserve is a barrel selection from the estate on the Santa Cruz Mountains. It has a deeper, medium gold hue as well as a reserved yet promising nose of almond paste, golden fruits, toasted bread, and baking spices. It’s rich, medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and balanced on the palate, with good acidity and the class to evolve nicely for another decade. However, there's no need to delay gratification either. (Drink between 2022-2032).
WA 94 (4/2024): The 2017 Chardonnay Reserve attains another level of focus and complexity from the Estate bottling. After aging for 10 months sur lie, 15 barrels were selected and racked with their lees into stainless tank for an additional 12 months. The results are, simply put, more of everything: intensity, length and vibrancy. The width, length and overall fidelity of the finish are where the most noticeable differences lie, instilling an already very solid Chardonnay with extra potential in the cellar. |

JD 96 (1/2019): Bottled in August, the 2017 Chardonnay Napa Valley offers Aubert-like notes of white flowers, white peach, tangerine, flower oil, and white flowers. It's rich, layered, so pure and balanced, and is just a class act as well as one of the top Chardonnays in this report. (Drink between 2019-2030).
WA 93+ (10/2018): Composed entirely of fruit from Atlas Peak and bottled two weeks ago, the 2017 Chardonnay gives very pretty white peaches, pink grapefruit, honey-drizzled pears and lime blossoms with touches of nutmeg, marzipan and baker’s yeast. The palate is medium-bodied with a slight, very pleasant phenolic grip to the texture and bags of stone fruit and pear layers, finishing on a lovely savory note.
VM 92 (12/2018): Pahlmeyer's 2017 Chardonnay (Napa Valley) is a pretty, very supple wine. Orchard fruit, chamomile, sage, mint and apricot are nicely pushed forward in this open-knit, creamy Chardonnay. Beautifully balanced and racy, the 2017 has a lot to offer. The Napa Valley Chardonnay is a blend of fruit from the estate and Antinori's Antica property on Atlas Peak. This is an attractive wine, especially within the context of the vintage. WA 93+ (10/2019): The 2017 Chardonnay Estate gives up apple pie, spiced pears and honeydew melon with touches of cedar, toasted cashews, honeycomb, allspice and ginger. Full-bodied, rich and spicy in the mouth, it has a creamy texture and long, toasty finish.
VM 93 (1/2020): The 2017 Chardonnay is bold, luscious and absolutely delicious. Tangerine oil, passion fruit, butter notes and exotic flowers all develop in a Chardonnay that nicely balances mountain structure, acidity and the natural viscosity of Wente-clone Chardonnay. As it often is, the Vineyard 7 & 8 in this vintage is one of the most distinctive Chardonnays in Napa Valley. (Drink between 2019-2027). Antonio Galloni. |

A restrained, ultra-fresh and distinctly floral nose reflects notes of various white orchard fruit aromas, lemon zest and discreet wood toast. There is outstanding volume to the rich and succulent broad-shouldered flavors that possess focused power on the beautifully long and sappy mineral-infused finish that is shaped by citrus-tinged acidity. This isn't quite as structured as the Chevalier, but it too is promising. Drink 2028+. |
