WA 99 (10/2005): It’s hard to believe the 2003 Syrah Astralis Vineyard could be better, but it offers riveting richness, intensity, purity, and equilibrium. Structurally, it is similar to the Piggott Range, revealing abundant amounts of sweet, ripe tannin, and huge extract, richness, and depth. Meant for true connoisseurs who are willing to forget it for 5-8 years, it represents what Roman Bratasiuk and Clarendon Hills do so well ... show respect for the great traditions of France, but recognize the extraordinary raw materials that emerge from old vines planted in McLaren Vale. This fabulous wine offers both power and elegance, and showcases the extraordinary talent of Roman Bratasiuk. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030.
VM 94 (8/2005): Opaque ruby with a violet rim. Full-throttle, liqueur-like aromas of raspberry, black cherry, blueberry, mocha, coffee, violet, licorice pastille and exotic Asian spices. Dense and thick yet fresh, exuberant and high-toned in flavor, showing every imaginable berry note and an impressively deep, velvety texture. WA 92 (10/2005): The 2003 Merlot Brookman Vineyard (which saw about 40% new French oak) is superb. A strong case can be made that there is no better Merlot being made in Australia. It is a dense, thick, juicy effort offering hints of roasted coffee intertwined with berry fruit and chocolate. Medium to full-bodied, long, opulent, and silky, it should be enjoyed over the next 10+ years.
VM 90+ (8/2005): Deep red. Aromas of ripe cherry, mocha and roasted coffee. Quite sweet and round in the mouth, showing a sweet, deep cherry flavor complemented by dark chocolate. Here there are none of the green edges found in so much New World merlot. Intense, structured and long, finishing with faintly dusty tannins and a subtle raw meat note coming up with air. |

WA 97+ (2/2014): Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the nose on the 2009 Hill of Grace is a little closed, though it reveals notes of warm black plums, blackberry coulis and cloves with subtle nuances of dried Provence herbs, forest floor and lavender. Medium to full-bodied, it possesses layers of medium to full-bodied black fruit and earth-laced flesh elegantly structured by a medium to firm level of finely grained tannins, nicely balanced acid and a long finish. Drink it now to 2026+.
JS 97 (5/2017): One of the most triumphant top tier South Australian reds from the 2009 vintage, this has a layered and luxurious feel to it — a trademark array of spice and fruit characters with a lot of sage, fresh blackberry and toasty oak, some more meaty fermentation-derived notes and a graphite edge, smoky too. The palate is supple and even. Tannins have a polished sheen to them, layered and supple, great fleshy volume and drive. It is deeply ripe and the tannin structure is both subtle and profound. It resonates long, a very deep wine that's enduring, supple and fleshy with a sapid, purring finish.
VM 96 (7/2014): Inky ruby. Explosive spice- and smoke-accented black and blue fruits and incense on the intensely perfumed nose. Palate-coating, very primary blackcurrant, floral pastille and fruitcake flavors reach every corner of the palate, with juicy acidity providing lift and verve. Smoothly combines power and vivacity, and finishes with Outstanding clarity and thrust, the supple tannins building slowly. At this youthful stage, this deep garnet-purple colored wine puts forward a vivid expression of blackberry preserve aromas amid underlying cassis, black cherry, spice box, char-grilled meat and chocolate box notes. Surprisingly medium to full-bodied (it smells much fuller!) with taut flavors that are very closed in the mouth, it has firm, chewy tannins to structure through the long and earthy finish. 406 cases imported to the US. Drink it 2018 to 2035+.
JS 95 (3/2014): A tiny 2% Cabernet component in 2009, this is sourced from the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley and Magill Estate and has spent 18 months in exclusively new American oak hogsheads. The depth and complexity on offer is straight up impressive, blue and black fruit aromas unwind, meaty at times, some dark green herbal notes and a cedary layer of oak lurking below. The palate has a core of essence-like flavour with plenty of oak-derived spice framed around blackberry, blood plum and cola. Tannins are smooth and even, flavours are gently glazed around the dark fruit spectrum, some blue fruits too. This is a wistful Grange that, as always, faithfully reflects the vintage.

Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, it's chiseled and saline, with impressive cut and grip.
BH 91-93 (6/2020): (the proportions have changed again and in 2018 are in a 35/65% proportion from Les Languettes in Aloxe and En Charlemagne in Pernand.) A restrained, ultra-fresh and distinctly floral nose reflects notes of various white orchard fruit aromas, lemon zest and discreet wood toast. There is outstanding volume to the rich and succulent broad-shouldered flavors that possess focused power on the beautifully long and sappy mineral-infused finish that is shaped by citrus-tinged acidity. This isn't quite as structured as the Chevalier, but it too is promising. Drink 2028+. |
