The Armagh Shiraz |
$225 |

|
| |
| VM 96 (6/2024): The fantastic 2008 Shiraz The Armagh is a bull at the gate, displaying dense and muscular aromas of blackberry, chocolate and coal dust with a slaty minerality. Tightly packed and energetic flavors follow with well-matched, chewy T-Bone tannins. It concludes with a picture-perfect finish, showcasing superb power, weight and length. Angus Hughson. |

Cluster M45 Shiraz |
$75 |
3 |
|
| |
WA 97 (2/2015): Deep garnet-purple, the 2010 Cluster M45 Shiraz has lovely floral and herbal notes wafting over a solid core of youthful blackberries and black cherries with nuances of Chinese five spice and cloves. Great intensity and balance in a rather modest medium-full body with great graininess to the tannins and plenty of freshness. It finishes long. Note that no 2011 Cluster M45 was produced. VM 92 (7/2013): Inky purple. A heady bouquet displays scents of candied dark berries, cherry-vanilla and incense, along with a smoky topnote. Lush and creamy in texture, offering palate-staining blackberry and cherry compote flavors and a hint of olive. Soft tannins build on the clinging finish, which leaves notes of blue fruits and licorice behind. Josh Raynolds. |

Brookman Vyd. Syrah |
$55 |
3 |
|
| |
WA 96 (10/2007): The 2005 Syrah Brookman Vineyard exhibits a complex array of toasty oak, violets, espresso, tar, blackberry, and blueberry. Like its siblings, it is opulent, sleek, and rich. It can be enjoyed over the next 20-25 years. VM 92+ (9/2007): Opaque violet. Blueberry, cassis, vanilla and molasses on the nose, with slow-building tar and black cardamom qualities. Sappy, velvety, deeply concentrated kirsch and dark berry liqueur flavors boast palate-saturating sweetness. Chewing tobacco and candied licorice add complexity to the long, sweet finish. I suppose that there are tannins here but the sweetness seems to have left them for dead. Josh Raynolds. |

Brookman Vyd. Syrah |
$50 |
4 |
|
| |
WA 95 (2/2009): The 2006 Syrah Brookman Vineyard was aged in 100% new oak. Complex both aromatically and on the palate, it will benefit from extended cellaring of 8-10 years. JD 95 (6/2012): Simply a smoking Syrah and up there with best of the lot, the 2006 Clarendon Hills Syrah Brookman offers up spectacular aromas and flavors of black fruits, cigar, bloody meat, iron, and black olive tapenade. Full-bodied, decadent, and gorgeously textured, with a rich, creamy mouth feel, fantastic freshness, and awesome purity, this thrill ride of a Syrah is a hedonistic delight that somehow stays light, balanced, and oh so drinkable. I don’t see any reason to hold off, yet this has at least another decade of longevity, possibly more. VM 93+ (9/2008): Inky ruby. Powerful, youthfully brooding cassis and candied plum aromas are complicated by dark chocolate, candied licorice, cola and vanilla. Brighter on the palate, which offers sweet dark berry flavors and a slow-building mocha quality. Impressively concentrated and palate-staining, but I don't find this over the top. Finishes with outstanding persistence and lingering berry qualities. I'll bet on this improving with at least four more years of bottle aging. Josh Raynolds. |

Hickinbotham Vyd. Syrah |
$69 |
9 |
|
| |
WA 97 (10/2007): The 2005 Syrah Hickinbotham Vineyard is opaque purple-colored with aromas of crushed rocks, toasty oak, tar, licorice, bacon, blueberry, and blackberry. Muscular and large in scale, it will profit from a decade of cellaring and drink well through 2030. WS 95 (10/2007): Big, rich and juicy, with plum, blueberry and a range of sweet spices. The fine tannins wrap around the generous mouthful of flavors, which linger powerfully. A touch of coffee adds interest, and the finish just doesn't quit. Best from 2010 through 2020. 500 cases imported. VM 94 (10/2007): Saturated purple. Powerful boysenberry, blueberry and licorice aromas are complicated by an amaro-like herbal bitterness, with a vanilla and mocha undercurrent adding another element. Broad, sweet and penetrating dark fruit flavors possess stunning density, with palate-saturating depth and power. Do you drink this or eat it? This displays a compellingly balanced shock-and-awe personality uniquely its own-another otherworldly example of this producer's style. |

Piggott Range Vyd. Syrah |
$75 |
6 |
|
| |
WA 97 (10/2007): The 2005 Syrah Piggott Range is quite backward currently. Glass-coating, it is deep crimson in color with mineral notes, violets, spice box, black pepper, espresso, smoked game, and blueberry aromatics. Deceivingly opulent, it has enough structure to merit 8-10 years of cellaring and should make old bones. Drink it through 2035. VM 93+ (9/2007): Inky purple. Deeply concentrated, slowly unfolding aromas of blueberry, mulberry and candied plum are complicated by bacon fat and espresso, with sexy oak spices adding interest. Chunky tannins give structural support to the brooding fruit. Picks up a brighter cherry character on the chewy finish, which offers exceptional cling and length. Josh Raynolds. |

Eligo Vyd. Selection Barossa Shiraz |
$79 |
6 |
|
| |
WA 97+ (6/2015): Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2012 Eligo has a profoundly scented nose of crème de cassis, blackberry pie, licorice, dark chocolate and blueberry preserves against an earthy/meaty background of bacon fat, forest floor, beef dripping and black loam. The densely packed, full-bodied palate manages almost paradoxical elegance and restraint with velvety tannins and lively acid giving closure to the long, multilayered finish. VM 94 (3/2016): Glass-staining purple. Heady spice- and smoke-tinged boysenberry and cherry scents are complicated by suggestions of candied violet, licorice and incense. Vibrant and focused on the palate, with appealingly sweet, oak-tinged black and blue fruit flavors deepening and spreading out in the mid-palate. Deeply concentrated yet graceful and precise, conveying real energy and power. Silky tannins give shape and subtle grip to a strikingly long, seamless finish that leaves sappy blue fruit, vanilla and licorice pastille notes behind. (Drink between 2021-2029). Josh Raynolds. |

| |
VM 93 (7/2014): Inky ruby. Explosive smoke- and spice-accented boysenberry and blackcurrant aromas show an exotic floral nuance and suggestions of licorice and allspice. Fleshy and broad on the palate, offering sweet dark fruit flavors and a bracing jolt of peppery spices. Finishes energetic, focused and pure, with silky tannins and a late touch of candied flowers. As attractive as this shiraz is right now, I'd give it at least another five years of bottle aging before digging in. Josh Raynolds. WA 91 (6/2015): Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2012 Entity has a baked black cherry and dried mulberry-laced nose with hints of prunes, Chinese five spice, black pepper and licorice. Full-bodied with plenty of spicy flavor, the baked black fruit flavors are framed by chewy tannins and it finishes long and anise-laced. |

WS 97 (9/2004): (Wine Spectator #27 wine of 2004) Big and powerful, brimming with tarry, spicy black cherry, dark plum, blackberry and chocolate flavors. Rich and gooey like a warm flourless chocolate cake, yet it finds a plush balance that keeps it from veering off into heaviness. This has grace, harmony and refinement, without losing an ounce of power. Drink now through 2025. 600 cases imported. WA 92 (10/2004): The classic 2000 Command Shiraz (aged nearly three years in new oak) possesses an opaque purple color as well as aromas of melted licorice, new saddle leather, roasted meats, truffles, black currants, and blackberries. Full-bodied and chewy, with supple tannin and a blockbuster finish, it will drink well for 10-12 years. VM 91 (8/2004): Full medium ruby. Superripe aromas of mocha, game, mulch and eucalyptus; here, too, the oak is less dominant than in past vintages. Huge, broad and mouthfilling, with very ripe, fat flavors of sweet red berries and woodsmoke. Offers impressive thickness and density without going over the top. Fairly high in alcohol at 14.5% but carries its weight reasonably gracefully. A real meal substitute of a shiraz , and quite showy already. |

Hill of Grace Shiraz |
$750 |

|
| |
WA 95 (4/1997): Other than the top cuvees of Penfolds' Grange, and the old vine Grenache and Astralis from Clarendon Hills, no Australian wines are richer than these offerings from Henschke - a winery that gets my nod as one of Australia's two or three finest producers. Each of these wines coats the mouth with glorious levels of jammy fruit, extract, glycerin, and silky tannin. They are all dense ruby/purple-colored, full-bodied, and capable of lasting at least a decade, and in the case of the 1991 Shiraz Hill of Grace, possibly 20+ years. WS 91 (6/1995): Marked by minty currant aromas with flavors to match. A bit rustic and still tannic, but it unfolds some complex flavors and holds together. Should be even better by 1997. 1,000 cases made. |

| WS 94 (11/1997): Earthy, almost decadent-tasting, but there are plenty of ripe plum, prune and black cherry flavors to accompany the gamy streak and hints of black pepper in this distinctive wine. Impressive now, better in 2000 or 2002. |

| WA 91 (4/2013): Deep brown in color, the 1993 Hill of Grace shows dried herb characters over notes of dried cherries, earth and pencil lead. Crisp and concentrated, it has firm, chewy tannins and offers a good expression of what fruit remains, even if it is a little under-ripe and lean in the long finish. It is mature. |

VM 92+ (7/2000): Deep, bright ruby-red. Extremely subtle, complex nose combines black raspberry, smoked meat, orange peel, dark chocolate, earth and game. Large-scaled and powerful on entry; then silky and voluminous. Really expands on the palate and builds on the aftertaste, with the fruit outlasting the ripe tannins. I would have scored this wine even higher except for a hint of disjointed acidity. Stephen Tanzer. WA 91 (4/2013): Deep garnet-brick in color, the 1995 Hill of Grace has a slightly leathered, dried fruit nose that is a little tired though highlighted by notes of sandalwood, tree bark and earth, hints of leather and meat. There's a touch of barnyard on the palate and it is a bit past its peak, fading slightly with crisp acid and firm, chewy tannins through a long finish. |

VM 94 (4/2023): The 2006 Shiraz Hill of Grace is still young and feels far from its peak. It already displays significant volume and rich aromas of primary mulberry, blackberry, clove and cedar in a riper frame that have not yet been fleshed out. The palate also remains a little closed with spicy dark berry fruits wound up in mouthcoating tannins. However, the length and balance are immaculate, suggesting it just needs time. Angus Hughson. WA 97 (4/2013): Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2006 Hill of Grace has some oak poking through the red and blue fruit aromas, with underlying toast, marmite and sage hints. Medium to full-bodied, it is a very tight knit and youthful wine with crisp acid, medium to firm, finely grained tannins and a long finish. Drink it 2014 to 2030+. |

The palate is led by its commendable structure at this stage, with firm, grainy tannins and very lively acid to support the tight-knit fruit. It finishes long and layered. It is an awesomely concentrated Shiraz with an inky/plum/garnet/purple color and a sweet nose of roasted meats, dried herbs, ground pepper, blackberries, and cassis. This intense, full-bodied effort boasts a profound depth and richness as well as layer upon layer of awesome concentration and length. Here, the 2017 Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon is more minty and structural than the glossy 2016 that preceded it. It it savory and leafy and fine. I recall this being one of the best Cabernets produced in this vintage. It is holding well, and it has plenty of time ahead of it; however, I would drink it before many of the other vintages that surround it. |

| WA 94-97 (8/2003): A profound offering, the 2002 Shiraz 11th Hour (it will be bottled in several months) represents great value for what it offers. This spectacularly concentrated, inky/purple-colored 2002 will take tasters to the Elysian fields of Shiraz. Aromas of acacia flowers, blackberries, blueberries, cassis, and exotic Asian spices are accompanied by a ripe, full-bodied, gorgeously textured, terrifically endowed Shiraz with no hard edges. It will drink well for 10-15 years. |

WA 97 (10/2005): Aged 18 months in primarily French oak, the 2004 Shiraz G.A.M. is an exceptional example of a precise yet full-flavored, concentrated Shiraz. Its gorgeous perfume of blueberries, blackberries, camphor, licorice, and pain grille is followed by an inky/blue/purple-colored wine offering superb purity, full-bodied richness, and gorgeous depth as well as texture. This fabulous effort is another example of Ben Glaetzer’s brilliant talents. It should drink well for 15 years. WS 89 (10/2006): Firm, with juicy blackberry, cherry and tar flavors on a a tightly wound frame, finishing with refreshing acidity. Built for the long haul. Give it time to soften. | WA 98 (10/2005): Bordering on perfection is the 2004 Shiraz Savitar. Made from 30- to 50-year-old vines, and aged 18 months in 100% new French hogsheads as well as smaller barriques, it boasts an opaque purple color, and an extraordinary nose of acacia flowers, blueberries, raspberries, and blacker fruits, melted licorice, and graphite. It possesses amazing intensity, great equilibrium, a fabulous, multi-layered mid-palate, and a blockbuster finish. This extraordinary Shiraz should prove to be one of the legends of southern Australia’s great 2004 vintage. Drink it over the next 12-15 years. |

Red and black currant fruit aromas are superbly integrated with fine-grained oak with a cedary lift adding detail. There is good fruit generosity on display for such a young wine matched by palate tension of fresh acidity and chalky tannins behind a long, balanced finish. Classically styled, this will undoubtedly age well. Angus Hughson. |

In the mouth notes of vanilla and cedar wrap around the warm black fruit core that is framed by firm, chewy tannins and just enough acid. It finishes long. |

WS 93 (12/2008): Firm in texture, with an open feel--a transparency--to the red berry, cherry and herb flavors. WA 90 (6/2001): The Outstanding 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 707 is a thick, rich, full-bodied Cabernet emphasizing copious quantities of cassis fruit. Pure, with nicely integrated oak, acidity, and tannin, it cuts a broad swath across the palate. While still young and grapy, this 1998 is loaded with potential. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2015. |

| WA 100 (2/2013): Deep purple-black in color, the 2008 Grange puts forward a very complex nose packed with aromas of mulberries, layers of baking spices, cloves and cinnamon with nuances of minced meat, anise, potpourri and whiffs of dried mint and chocolate. Medium to full-bodied, taut and very spicy in the mouth, it shows touches of sandalwood and Chinese five spice complementing the layers of dark fruit flavors. It is framed by firm, grainy tannins and a refreshing acid line before finishing very long with aniseed and lingering blackberry preserves notes. This is clearly a wonderfully opulent and a magic vintage for this label. Drink it from 2018 to 2035+. |

WA 97 (2/2014): The 2009 Grange Shiraz is a comprised of 84% Barossa, 8% McLaren, and a little Clare Valley and a little Magill fruit with a small 2% of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. At this youthful stage, this deep garnet-purple colored wine puts forward a vivid expression of blackberry preserve aromas amid underlying cassis, black cherry, spice box, char-grilled meat and chocolate box notes. Surprisingly medium to full-bodied (it smells much fuller!) with taut flavors that are very closed in the mouth, it has firm, chewy tannins to structure through the long and earthy finish. 406 cases imported to the US. Drink it 2018 to 2035+. JS 95 (3/2014): A tiny 2% Cabernet component in 2009, this is sourced from the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley and Magill Estate and has spent 18 months in exclusively new American oak hogsheads. The depth and complexity on offer is straight up impressive, blue and black fruit aromas unwind, meaty at times, some dark green herbal notes and a cedary layer of oak lurking below. The palate has a core of essence-like flavour with plenty of oak-derived spice framed around blackberry, blood plum and cola. Tannins are smooth and even, flavours are gently glazed around the dark fruit spectrum, some blue fruits too. This is a wistful Grange that, as always, faithfully reflects the vintage. VM 94 (7/2014): 98% shiraz and 2% cabernet sauvignon): Inky ruby. Intense spice- and mineral-accented aromas of cherry pit, blackberry and plum, with smoke and floral qualities adding complexity. Taut and linear on entry, then fleshier in the mid-palate, offering zesty dark fruit and violet pastille flavors and hints of licorice and vanilla. Finishes smoky, spicy and very long, with youthfully firm, building tannins adding grip. In a relatively taut, wound-up style for this wine; by all means give it some age. WS 94 (8/2014): Aromatically pure, with beautiful focus to the blueberry, black currant, espresso and cream character. In the mouth this sprouts prickly tannins and picks up a distinct tomato leaf note that sends the wine in a different direction. This has depth, length and plenty of ripeness without excess weight, but lacks the complete harmony of the best vintages. Best from 2016 through 2030. 406 cases imported. |

JS 100 (2/2015): The 2010 Grange arrives with much expectation and does not disappoint. This is a powerhouse, structurally superior to both the 2009 and 2008 vintages and breathtakingly dense, long and precise. The nose has cola, blackberry, vanillin, hard brown spices of all kinds, coal smoke, meaty charcuterie elements and a strong tarry, savory note that speaks of the 85% Barossa Valley componentry. The palate has super deep tannins that fan out through flavorsome black fruits. These are purposeful tannins - they bristle on the palate, tantalizing and assertive yet playful; strong not aggressive. The power here is the thing: This has mouth-coating density and terrific drive, so tightly coiled, it gives enough away to suggest a very, very long cellaring wine is here. This is a classic Grange that will please the serious collectors. A wine of genuine pedigree. Drink in 2026. WA 99 (10/2014): The 2010 Grange is a 4% Cabernet Sauvignon and 96% Shiraz blend made from Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale and Magill Estate fruit that was aged 17 months in 100% new American oak hogsheads. Very deep purple-black in color, this is classic Grange - amongst the finest produced - replete with fresh, vibrant and youthful black fruit notes showing some blueberry aromas and accents of camphor, anise and the slightest floral hint plus a whiff of oak in the background to lend a cedar-laced lift to this textbook Shiraz nose. Medium to full-bodied in the mouth, it is very taut and finely constructed showing typically firm, grainy, uniform tannins, great concentration and wonderful persistence on the finish. If I have any very slight complaint of this near perfect wine it is that it seems a little too clinical and appears to speak less of the land and the heart of South Australia and more of the very skilled winemaking than did the Grange from the magical 2008 vintage. WS 98 (12/2014): Focused, elegant, powerful and layered, exhibiting plum, currant, floral, spice and coffee flavors that come together seamlessly and persist on the long, complex finish. This has presence and deftness in equal measure, with well-integrated tannins. Best from 2018 through 2030. 371 cases imported. |

WA 99 (10/2017): Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2012 Grange sports an earthy/meaty nose with notes of tree bark, dusty earth, underbrush and chargrill over a core of dried mulberries and Christmas cake, plus hints of pepper and baking spices. Rich, medium to full-bodied and seductive, it has spicy layers and a long meaty/savory finish. JS 98 (1/2017): A simple split between the Barossa Valley (81%) and McLaren Vale (19%), this has all the hallmarks of a great Grange. Deep and ripe dark-plum and black-cherry aromas lead the nose, and there's plum cake here too that's really ripe and deeply spicy. The 100% new American oak has been thoroughly subsumed below tarry and savory brooding notes of black licorice and olive tapenade. The palate's incredibly poised and has richness with composure driven by tight-knit tannins and plenty of ripe dark-plum and cherry-fruit flavors. It is neatly crafted, powerful yet contained and smoothly rendered into the finish. This is a powerful vintage that has been cleverly polished and tamed in the winery; it will live long. Best from 2025 and for two decades after that. WS 97 (2/2017): Powerful and impressive, this seamless expression offers chai tea, sandalwood, dark chocolate, gingerbread and tobacco notes that complement the juicy black cherry fruit flavors at the core. Gains momentum on the finish. Intense but polished, revealing an air of weightlessness that lingers. Drink now through 2035. 357 cases imported. |

WA 100 (10/2017): Remember that old Heinz Ketchup “anticipation” ad from the 1970s? The palate of this 2013 Grange does just that. It makes you wait with so much delicious promise being drip fed into the mouth at first—and then it bursts forth and delivers! WS 97 (3/2018): This is bold, with plenty of power and grace. Dense and lush up front, featuring aromatic notes of espresso and milk chocolate, with a core of fresh, juicy raspberry coulis, wild blackberry and maraschino cherry flavors. Perfumed gingerbread, licorice, sandalwood and Kalamata olive details emerge on the epic finish, showing tremendous harmony. Drink now through 2037. 897 cases imported. JS 96 (10/2017): A good Grange, approachable yet impressive, it is reminiscent of the 2009. Smells of deep ripe dark plum and redder fruits, the oak jumps in and out of the nose, quite rich blackberry compote, dark spices, tar and earth. There’s density and depth in the palate, this embraces the full bodied and fully ripe capacity of the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Coonawarra and Magill Estate fruit. The fruit is persistent, commanding and dense, it delivers power in a more traditional shape. Best from 2022 and two or more decades hence. |

| WA 98 (10/2018): Rich, concentrated and intense, the 2014 Grange delivers exactly what we've come to expect from this Penfolds icon wine. It's full-bodied, velvety in feel and loaded with plummy fruit, framed in vanilla and cedar. Dense, powerful and tannic, it should prove to be long lived, even by Grange standards. Gago doesn't rate the vintage overall that highly, but he says the selection this year for Grange was a bit more stringent and that production levels were just average. There are still over 1,000 cases for the United States. |

JS 100 (7/2019): Much anticipated vintage for Grange and it is a powerhouse of concentration and complexity. Aromas of orange and lemon peel to start, then graphite, blackberries, plum paste, black cherries, boundless sweet oak spice, fresh cedar, tar, mahogany, roasted coffee and chocolate - the list goes on. Such complexity. Classic Grange, offering such deep, dark intensity. The palate has immense richness and depth with a super succulent and very long, fleshy, deeply weighted array of dense, velvet-wrapped tannins that run so long. The fruit flavors sit in the blackberry, blood-plum and blueberry zone with succulent, long and assertive structure, carrying through in an utterly seamless mode. The finish is tightly wrenched, in spectacularly powerful style, locking this wine in for a very long haul. Best from 2030. JD 99 (11/2019): The flagship 2015 Grange is a monster of wine and one of those rare wines that blends power and elegance perfectly. Revealing a saturated purple color, it’s seemingly more forward and seductive than past great vintages, which I suspect is due to the incredible purity of fruit as well as the wine’s flawless balance than any change in winemaking or stylistic shifts. I also think the acidity is healthy, and the 2015 tips the scales at 14.5% alcohol, which is certainly in the sweet spot, if not tame, for beautifully ripe Syrah these days. A blend of 98% Shiraz and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon that spent 20 months in new American oak hogsheads, it offers an extraordinary perfume of sweet crème de cassis, lead pencil shavings, camphor, Asian spices, licorice, and wildflowers. This is followed by a full-bodied, powerful yet incredibly seamless and elegant Shiraz that has no hard edges, a big, dense mid-palate, ripe tannins, and a great finish. Coming close to rivaling the 1986, which has always been a benchmark vintage of Grange for me, the 2015 offers a more polished, elegant, approachable style. Vintage comparisons aside, this is a legendary example of Grange in the making. The savvy wine lovers out there will give this 7-8 years of bottle age (I’ll probably be out of bottles by then) and enjoy over the following 2-3 decades. WA 98+ (8/2019): The nose of the 2015 Grange features the wine's characteristic lifted aromas, joined by pronounced American oak influence and bold blackberry fruit, plus hints of red meat, raspberries, asphalt and vanilla. It's dense and concentrated on the palate, full-bodied yet balanced and firm, with a rich, velvety texture and long, plush finish. Don't expect great complexity at this stage—it's much too young to show much more than the primary fruit and oak elements—but this is a Grange that should easily go three or four decades. WS 97 (11/2019): Distinctive and powerful, yet still elegant, showing restraint despite the dense and generous flavors. Precise notes of dark chocolate, maraschino cherry, mahogany and toasted coconut complement the core of wild blackberry and blueberry fruit. The tannins are smooth and polished, delivering some tug on the finish, which persists as subtle hints of dried lavender and white pepper linger. Drink now through 2040. 879 cases imported. |

WA 99 (7/2020): The 2016 Grange includes 3% Cabernet Sauvignon and was sourced from Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Clare Valley, with a little bit from Magill Estate, in the suburbs of Adelaide. Aged in 100% new American oak (as always), it offers up trademark lifted aromas plus scents of vanilla, toasted coconut, cedar, raspberries and blackberries. Impressively concentrated and full-bodied, with an extraordinarily long, velvety finish, it's nevertheless reasonably fresh and tight, with decades of cellaring potential if properly stored. Certainly at least on a par with such vintages as 2010 and 2012, the big question is whether it will ultimately reach triple digits. JS 98 (7/2020): This is a very intense Grange with such rich black-fruit, tar and coal-smoke aromas together with iodine and black-olive notes and an array of wild dark herbs. Almost impenetrable dark plums and licorice, as well as bacon fat. The palate has such seamless delivery of intense blackberry and plum flavors with some redder tones emerging, too. The power here is countered by such freshness and an almost elegant feel. This has such impressive, vibrant, long and seamless fruit power. Really is exceptionally complete, but tight, needs time to open. Very enjoyable now, but better after 2023. VM 96 (12/2021): Saturated ruby. Displays highly perfumed aromas of dark berry preserves, cherry-cola, pipe tobacco, smoky oak and vanilla, along with exotic spice and floral topnotes. Smooth, broad and appealingly sweet, intense, spice-laced blackcurrant, cherry, candied violet and mocha flavors show outstanding depth and energy. The dark fruit and floral notes resonate on a strikingly long, seamless finish that features well-integrated tannins and building spiciness. (Drink between 2027-2039). Josh Raynolds. |

WA 95 (10/2004): A brilliant effort, the 2001 Shiraz (Second Release) was aged 30 months in 3-year-old French casks. Full-bodied, powerful, rich, and well-balanced with well-integrated wood, acidity, and tannin as well as spectacularly pure blackberry and cassis fruit infused with touches of charcoal, smoke, and new saddle leather, it should drink well for 10-15 years. WS 88 (7/2004): Ripe, broad and generous with its earthy berry and plum flavors, a touch of something like beet root coloring the profile. A sturdy wine that should develop with cellaring. It is a magnificent effort boasting tremendous ripeness as well as abundant blueberry and creme de cassis notes intermixed with flowers, graphite, and crushed rocks. With amazing concentration, purity, and richness, but no heaviness (the alcohol is only 14.5%), and a finish that lasts well past a minute, it is accessible now, but should age effortlessly for two decades or more. |

WA 95 (2/2009): The Shiraz for the 2006 The Descendant is sourced from a single vineyard and co-fermented with 8% Viognier. It was aged for 18 months in seasoned French oak. Opaque purple-colored, it emits an expressive, sexy perfume of violets, wood smoke, black pepper, espresso, blueberry, and chocolate. Full-bodied, on the palate, this voluptuous effort has great concentration with a noticeable uplift from the Viognier, tons of spicy black fruits, enough ripe tannin to evolve for a decade, and 60-second finish. It should provide pleasure from 2016 through 2036. VM 93+ (10/2008): Inky violet. Powerfully scented, brooding aromas of boysenberry, cherry compote, licorice and smoky minerals; aeration brings up brighter black raspberry and blackberry qualities, which carry onto the palate. Broad and deeply concentrated, presenting a seductive array of sweet dark berry liqueur flavors and a late jolt of tangy minerals. Clings tenaciously to the palate and finishes with lingering blackberry and candied plum flavors. This really deserves some patience. WS 73 (12/2008): Strange, green, bitter flavors turn gamy on the finish. Shiraz and Viognier. 900 cases made. |

WA 94 (2/2009): The 2006 Les Amis is 100% Grenache aged in new oak for 18 months. Purple-colored, it exhibits an enthralling nose of smoky oak, roses, garrigue, lavender, black cherry, and black raspberry. It conceals enough ripe tannin to support 5-7 years of additional cellaring. This layered, lengthy effort should be at its best from 2012 to 2024. VM 94 (10/2009): (100% grenache) Deep, vivid ruby. Strikingly perfumed bouquet of black raspberry, cherry pie, incense and anise. Lush and creamy, with deep, sweet red fruit and bitter cherry flavors complemented by notes of exotic candied flowers and licorice. Supple tannins frame the expansive fruit and add definition to the long, focused, spicy finish. WS 92 (2/2010): Ripe and generous, offering a supple mouthful of cherry, black pepper, bacon and spice flavors that rocket through a layer of fine tannins. The spices, including cardamom and anise seed, come through strongly on the finish. Drink now through 2017. 300 cases made. |

VM 94 (8/2006): Inky violet. Explosively aromatic nose offers the full range of red and black fruits, along with notes of candied violet, cinnamon, mace, star anise and exotic tobacco. Hugely concentrated and velvety but also remarkably precise and energetic, with very pure flavors of blackberry, boysenberry, plum preserve and kirsch Ripe, explosive and deep on the back; as rich and sweet as this is, it's not at all thick or cloying. A real balancing act of power and purity. The tannins are completely buffered by the wine's sheer concentration of fruit. I'd give this at least five years of cellaring to gain in complexity. As impressive to my palate as the superb 2002 version. WA 99 (10/2006): The estate’s flagship cuvee is the virtually perfect 2003 Run Rig. Made from 8 separate Barossa vineyards (ranging in age from 94 to 158 years), it is primarily Shiraz with 4-5% co-fermented Viognier included in the blend. The wine was aged in French oak of which 60% is new. The sensational, inky/purple-tinged 2003 exhibits a stunningly sweet nose of blackberries, blueberries, litchi nuts, smoked meats, and a hint of apricots. Elegant yet super-powerful, rich, concentrated, and long, it is a tour de force in winemaking as well as a modern classic example of Barossa Shiraz. It should drink well for 20-25 years. |

The Laird Shiraz (1.5 L) Lightly Scuffed Label |
$1,800 |

|

| WA 100 (12/2010): The Laird is Powell’s new baby, coming from a single 5 acre / 2 hectare vineyard of Shiraz in the Marananga sub-region planted in the 1960s that recently became available for contracting. This is a very different wine from Run Rig. What is most striking about it is the combination of power and elegance in this first vintage, coming from a very good year in the Barossa. Matured for 3 years in new Dominique Laurent “Magic Casks” (Troncais French oak barriques with thicker staves designed for the long aging of Shiraz), 2005 The Laird gives a deep garnet color and pronounced nose that shows savory and spice notes over the fruit, with aromas of hung meat, Peking duck, fertile loam, underbrush, tree bark, anise, cumin seed, menthol, dried roses and lavender over warm black cherries, crush blackberries and fruit cake. The tight-knit, full-bodied palate is very fine with a high level of silt-like tannins and crisp acid running through the concentrated fruit and savory flavors, finishing very long with lingering earth and spice notes. At 14.8% declared alcohol, this is by no means one of the biggest wines in the Barossa, but it is most certainly one of the best. It’s an absolute joy to drink now but it is recommended readers give it 4-5 years more in bottle to soften and marry and enjoy it to 2030+. |

WS 93 (7/2008): Firm in texture, this is balanced with a vibrant core of red cherry, raspberry and spice flavors that persist on the chewy finish, expanding to show hints of dark chocolate and sweet spices. Best from 2010 through 2016. 5,400 cases imported. WA 92 (2/2009): The purple-colored 2006 Shiraz Bella’s Garden from Barossa Valley offers a brooding bouquet of wood smoke, pepper, damp earth, blueberry, and licorice. This leads to a full-bodied, layered Shiraz with excellent grip and power. Give it 2-3 years of additional cellaring and drink it from 2011 to 2022. |

VM 92+ (7/2008): Inky ruby. Ripe blackberry and boysenberry aromas are youthfully brooding and slightly smoky, opening reluctantly to display fruitcake, baking spices and dried flowers. Deep and chewy, with sappy dark berry flavors and slow-building spiciness. Really fills the mouth, but this isn't exactly heavy, or too sweet. Definitely give this densely packed shiraz some age. Josh Raynolds. WA 92 (2/2009): The 2006 Shiraz Lily’s Garden comes from McLaren Vale. It reveals a complex aromatic array including balsam wood, spice box, violets, earth notes, pepper, blueberry, and blackberry. Layered and rich, it conceals enough ripe tannin to evolve for another 2-3 years. It has outstanding grip, depth, and a lengthy, pure finish. |

| WA 94 (8/2024): The 2017 HVD Chardonnay is highly aromatic and seems to have shed its youthful, white stone fruit, floral character, and it sits better for it. This is really impressive. On the palate, the wine is tight and coiled, savory, salted and powerful. It's impressive. It lifts through the long finish and introduces some cumin and white pepper to close. There's a Benjamin Button aspect to this wine—it is surprisingly youthful, compact and composed. 12.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. |

VM 87 (8/2003): Saturated, dark ruby-red. Reticent, backward nose combines small berries, black plum, dark olive, leather, chocolate and vanilla. Simple and honest, with ripe plum and cassis flavors framed by a thick coating of chunky, green-edged tannins. A wine of modest complexity. WS 85 (9/2002): Firm tannins make for a chewy wine, but buried in the core is a nub of juicy plum and currant fruit that needs a little time to surface. Best after 2003. 44,000 cases made. |
