| BH 88 (1/2006): Here the nose is slightly fresher with riper, fuller and more complex aromas and sappy, dusty and punchy flavors that are a bit more precise and while this is absolutely delicious, it is also altogether serious and delivers first rate finishing complexity. A really lovely effort that offers excellent overall balance and made in more of an old school style than the rest of the range. (Drink starting 2011). |

| BH 86-89 (1/2005): (46 year old vines raised in 15% new wood). Elegant and very Chambolle red pinot fruit notes that are ripe but atypically fresh and vibrant for 2003 are followed by rich, sweet, sappy and moderately structured flavors that offer solid length, all wrapped in dusty tannins. This is really quite pretty. Drink 2008+. |

WA 92 (8/2005): While slightly reductive, the 2003 Clos St.-Denis admirably displays its enormous concentration and depth of fruit. Copious quantities of dark berries are intermingled with notes of herbs, licorice, and red cherries in its complex, and lengthy character. Projected maturity: 2008-2017. VM 90+ (4/2006): Good full, deep red. Musky, decadent aromas of red fruits, flowers, truffle and sweet oak. Concentrated, superripe and broad, with atypical weight for this cuvee Rather firm and unforthcoming today. Very horizontal on the finish, with fine tannins coating the palate. BH 89 (1/2006): There is better freshness here with a nose of mocha and very ripe plum that leads to flavors that are fresh, intense and beautifully textured as the sap buffers the firm and ripe tannins. This is a big wine by the usual standards of Clos St. Denis with ample power and volume culminating in a palate staining finish and noticeable warmth. Drink 2013+. |

VM 92+ (4/2006): Saturated medium red. Distinct suggestions of surmaturite to the aromas of plum, currant, loam and chocolate. Sweet, dense and lush, with deeply pitched flavors of minerals and chocolate. Wonderfully concentrated and deep wine, finishing long and sappy, with big, dusty, sweet tannins. With extended time in the recorked bottle, the wine's extravagant ripeness became less apparent, and pungent notes of strawberry, cherry, minerals, flowers and earth emerged. A great vintage for this bottling and likely to be long-lived. BH 89-92 (4/2005): This is slightly more elegant and fresher still with really pretty earthy and ripe red pinot fruit that also merge seamlessly into sweet, mineral-driven and precise moderately full flavors that are beautifully textured and well detailed on the strikingly persistent, ever so slightly dry finish. This is unquestionably a stylish wine by the standards of the vintage and this will require at least a decade to come into its own. Drink 2013+. |

Bonnes Mares Grand Cru |

WS 95 (5/2006): A touch cheesy (not a bad thing in a fine young red), this shows plenty of licorice, blackberry and spice notes from new oak. Young and unevolved, with a foundation of resonating tannins, it builds in intensity through the long finish. Impressive. Best from 2010 through 2035. 225 cases made. WA 93 (8/2005): Though Roumier’s holdings in Bonnes Mares are equally divided between the “white" and “red" soils, the latter produced substantially more fruit in 2003, being better equipped - thanks to the water retaining clay - to cope with the heat and drought. Deep, earthy aromas of black fruits can be discerned in its complex nose. Powerful, armed with huge depth, this big, tannic, highly structured wine is dominated by brambleberries and blackberries. Its exceptionally long finish reveals a slight hint of alcoholic heat. Projected maturity: 2008-2019. VM 91+ (4/2006): Good medium red. Exotic aromas of truffle, pepper, licorice and earth, with a suggestion of red berry liqueur. Then powerful and peppery in the mouth, with less obvious sweetness than the vintage would suggest. Finishes with powerful, broad tannins and building peppery persistence. Very Bonnes-Mares in style: somber and brooding. Roumier says this reminds him of the 1990. BH 88 (4/2007): Ample wood sets off very ripe aromas of spiced plum, mocha and subtle coffee that lead to big, rich and powerful flavors that display a muscular, taut and extremely intense profile culminating in a ripe and long finish where another touch of wood resurfaces. This is not particularly elegant though it is lush, generous and mouth coating. The '03 Bonnes Mares will undoubtedly age even though it remains very '03 in style and character. In short, this is perfectly good if particular. Drink 2013+. |

BH 91-93 (1/2005): This is more of everything here including aromatic complexity, size, weight, muscle and sheer depth. The aromas here are truly remarkable with raspberry and ripe black berry notes complemented by spicy plum and a smoky perfume that is akin to musk. The rich, intense and full-bodied flavors are relatively supple yet wrapped in dense but fine tannins buffered by superb mid-palate sap. This is hugely long with a powerful and quite chewy finish. This should age for 25 to 30 years, perhaps longer as the balance is spot on. Drink 2013+. Don't miss! VM 90-94 (4/2005): Good deep bright red. Enticing aromas of black raspberry, coffee, mocha and sexy oak. Then less exotic than usual for this wine at this early stage of its evolution: saline and savory, with notes of underbrush but not the normal India n spices. Perhaps a bit youthfully tight today. Quite restrained in its sweetness and not yet showing much complexity. Finishes with big, broad tannins and very good length. WA 93 (8/2005): Loads of spices are intermingled with blackberries and black cherries in the wonderful aromatics of the 2003 Chambertin-Clos de Beze. A bold, ample, medium to full-bodied wine, it expands on the palate, revealing great breadth and richness. Hugely spicy, this candied blackberry-dominated effort sports a persistent finish crammed with solid tannin. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2020. |

JS 96 (6/2016): Domaine Armand Rousseau is part of the gold standard for Burgundy lovers, especially in Hong Kong. Yesterday I tasted reds from his two top vineyards from the extremely hot vintage of 2003. I wasn't expecting to find truly great wines, but Rousseau's Chambertin was just that. It showed crazy aromas of shitake mushrooms and dried cherries and strawberries. It was full body with velvety tannins and a long and intense finish. Lots of fruit but not too much. It was so integrated and beautiful for the vintage. Drink or hold. WS 96 (5/2007): A supple red, this exudes cinnamon, plum and cocoa aromas augmented by flavors of licorice and mineral, with a long, lively finish. Balanced, yet needs time to integrate the dense tannins. Will be terrific in about 10 years. Best from 2012 through 2030. 64 cases imported. BH 93 (4/2017): (opened from personal storage). Somewhat curiously given the natural coolness of Chambertin, this seems noticeably riper than the '03 Clos de Bèze (see herein) with notes of mocha, spice, earth and markedly ripe black currant aromas. There is excellent size, weight, concentration and power to the big-bodied and extract-rich flavors that coat the mouth before culminating in a lightly mineral-inflected, velvety and as the nose suggests, mocha-tinged finish. This is more 2003 in basic character than the Bèze though as is usually the case, it's more structured as well though with 45 minutes in a decanter, this too could be drunk now with pleasure. That said, I would be inclined to give this at least 6 to 10 more years first though please be aware that this will be capable of holding for decades. Multiple, and consistent, notes save for the fact that some examples seem to display more prominent wood than others. Drink 2023+. VM 93 (4/2006): Medium red. Aromas of raspberry, minerals and smoked meat, with a positive earthy nuance. Dense and sweet, with a wonderfully silky, thick texture and solid mineral underpinning. This is thicker and broader than the Clos Saint-Jacques but more backward. Mounts slowly toward the back and builds impressively, finishing with a hint of medicinal austerity. This is quite fresh for the year, and the tannins are fine. Stephen Tanzer. WA 92 (8/2005): Red cherries, super-ripe raspberries, fresh blackberries and spices make up the aromatic profile of the 2003 Chambertin. Medium to full-bodied and silky-textured in both the attack and mid-palate, this wine exhibits Outstanding amplitude and depth. Assorted sweet black fruits are interspersed with a myriad of spices in its complex character. Its extensive finish displays copious quantities of firm, slightly rough tannin. Projected maturity: 2009-2020. BH 91-93 (1/2005): A deeply pitched yet wonderfully elegant nose of black pinot fruit, game even slightly animale and subtle underbrush notes complement perfectly balanced, pure and powerful flavors that pack plenty of punch and superb length. This is a big if not massive wine with a dusty, lingering finish of real style and grace. At the moment, this is actually more refined than the Bèze, which is usually not the case at this early stage. This should age well for years and it will require at least a decade to really begin strutting its stuff. Drink 2013+. Don't miss! |

WA 94 (8/2005): Boasting a nose of great ripeness and freshness, the 2003 Bonnes Mares offers aromas of waxy black fruits and spices. Medium to full-bodied, it resembles liquid silk in both its attack and mid-palate. Luxurious and sensual, this highly expressive wine coats the palate with black cherries and dark raspberries whose effects linger in its tannin-packed, slightly dry finish. Projected maturity: 2009-2020. VM 91 (4/2006): Medium red-ruby. Blackberry, violet, mocha and bitter chocolate on the slightly roasted nose. Huge, sweet and expressive, with extravagantly rich flavors of currant, blueberry, chocolate and spices. Quite velvety and sensual for this wine, thanks to its unusually fat, broad texture. Finishes with suave but serious tannins. BH 90 (1/2006): (from a 2.7 ha parcel situated entirely in terres rouges soil in the south west portion of the vineyard). A penetrating and exceptionally expressive nose of mocha, plum and spice notes adds nuance to the violet and blueberry aromas and this ripe character continues onto the sappy, mouth coating and supple flavors that are so dense that there is a real weight and opulence on the cassis and black cherry liqueur finish. This is particular in style and will not be for everyone. Drink 2015=. |
