Chambolle Musigny |
$89 |

VM 91 (1/2018): Less exuberant on the nose than the Morey, dominated by musky brown spices. Then more harmonious on the palate, offering fine-grained red berry and spice flavors with a nicely tangy quality for this very ripe vintage. This suave village wine finishes with substantial but smooth tannins that spread out horizontally to coat the palate on the persistent, mineral-tinged finish. Prune Amiot advises her clients to wait three or four years for these village wines. (Drink between 2021-2028). Stephen Tanzer. BH 89 (1/2018): A distinctly ripe yet airy menthol-inflected nose combines floral notes with those of red and black cherry liqueur-like scents. Not surprisingly there is a bit more refinement to the focused, lacy and stony flavors that are very Chambolle in character, all wrapped in a balanced, lingering and youthfully austere finish. Worth a look. (Drink starting 2022). |

| WA 92-94 (1/2015): The 2013 Chambolle Musigny les Charmes comes through three plots just under les Fuesselots that make 1.3 hectares. It has a slightly more reserved, masculine bouquet compared to les Plantes at the moment, but there is still fine focus and delineation in situ. The palate is supple in the mouth, leaning more here to the red side of the fruit spectrum with cranberry and pomegranate, structured on the finish with an attractive grainy texture. Outstanding! |

| BH 89-91 (4/2017): (this is actually a premier cru but it is not declared as such.) A ripe and dense nose is composed primarily by notes of plum, violet and warm earth nuances. As is typically the case there is more size, weight and power to the equally dense medium-bodied flavors that possess plenty of tannin-buffering dry extract, all wrapped in a firmly structured but well-balanced finish. Patience required. Drink 2025+. Outstanding Top Value! |

| BH 89-92 (4/2019): A more deeply pitched nose combines notes of plum, dark currant, earth and a whiff of the sauvage. Once again there is excellent intensity to the racy but muscular and robust flavors that deliver fine length on the more firmly structured and mildly rustic finish. This too is going to need at least a few years of cellaring to become more civilized as it's tightly wound today. Drink 2027+. |

| BH 90-92 (4/2019): A perfumed and borderline exotic nose speaks of elegant and very pretty aromas of red currant, plum and dark cherry. The seductively textured medium-bodied flavors also exude evident minerality on the focused, intense and moderately austere finale that makes clear that this is going to need a few years to become more pliant and user-friendly. | VM 89-91 (4/2007): Good deep red. Perfumed nose combines black raspberry, violet and minerals. Dense, sweet and layered, with a chocolatey superripeness to the dark fruit flavors. Quite broad and sensual in the middle palate. Finishes with big, ripe tannins. This is 13.8% alcohol. |

WA 91-93 (12/2014): The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets has a more limestone-scented bouquet, the fruit a little redder than that of Fremiets, opening with wilted rose-petal scents infusing the strawberry and red currant aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a little more flesh than the aforementioned premier cru, but maintaining appreciable balance and minerality that is neatly assimilated on the sappy finish. This should blossom once in bottle. There is class here. VM 90+ (3/2016): Good full red. Deep, ripe aromas of dark fruits and spices show a medicinal reserve. Densely packed and concentrated, with strong acidity contributing to a very primary, clenched quality in the early going despite the wine's solid ripeness. Finishes saline and firmly tannic but not dry. This cuvee is often the supplest and tastiest in the cellar at this stage but not this year. Less fruity than the 2014 but tactile and quite long on the aftertaste. Strong acidity should keep this wine young for a long time. Stephen Tanzer. WS 90 (5/2016): The cherry, currant and strawberry notes are matched by a firm, bracing structure in this red. Features fine weight and balance, remaining vibrant and long, with a mineral accent. Best from 2018 through 2028. 21 cases imported. BH 90-92 (4/2015): (from two parcels measuring .65 ha.) Reduction once again dominates the fruit. The mouth feel of the medium-bodied flavors is notably finer than that of the Fremiets with the same minerality and punch, all wrapped in a focused and lingering finish that also is ever-so-mildly warm and austere. In the same fashion the balance isn't quite perfect, but this is still very attractive. Drink 2021+. |

| BH 91-93 (4/2019): A softly spiced nose grudgingly reveals wafting and perfumed aromas of plum liqueur, violet and a hint of sandalwood. The medium weight flavors are not quite as dense as those of the Frémiets but they're finer still with plenty of the hallmark minerality suffusing the classy and impeccably well-balanced finale. This Zen-like effort should be approachable after only 5 to 7 years of cellaring if that's your preference. |

| BH 94 (4/2013): (from a huge 3.98 ha parcel.) Initially there is a touch of reduction though aggressive swirling liberates the admirably pure, fresh and elegant nose of a plenitude of floral notes along with a ripe mix of red berries and iron, stone and earth hints. There is good power and excellent complexity to the wonderfully well-delineated medium weight flavors that possess fine phenolic ripeness and superb energy on the focused, linear and stunningly long and saline-infused finish. This is a seriously impressive effort that is built to age. Drink 2025+. Outstanding! |

WS 93 (5/2016): Black cherry, raspberry and pepper flavors mark this vibrant red, holding back for now, but showing a sense of the depth and saturated fruit. The finish is firm and chalky, but this will open up with air and time. Best from 2019 through 2032. 100 cases imported. VM 92+ (3/2016): Bright medium red. Alluring superripe aromas of black cherry, mint and bitter chocolate: I would have guessed that this wine was vinified with some whole clusters but in fact it was entirely destemmed. A rather powerful Volnay with a slightly high-toned, almost porty ripeness to its black cherry, dark berry and chocolate flavors, but strong, slightly peppery acidity gives it a penetrating, somewhat disjointed quality in the early going. This deep, chewy Volnay finishes with big, granular tannins and excellent persistence. Stephen Tanzer. WA 92-94 (12/2014): The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Champans has a feisty, much more gourmand bouquet compared to its siblings at this early stage with almost meaty red berry fruit infused with limestone/flinty scents. The palate is very focused with an abiding sense of symmetry, long in the mouth with fine tannins (although not as filigree as the Taillepieds) but with the same silky and harmonious texture toward the long finish. Excellent. BH 90-93 (4/2015): (from a huge 3.98 ha parcel.) Reduction. Here there is more size, weight and power to the detailed and more subtly mineral-driven flavors that also possess a lovely texture on the dusty, palate coating and linear finish. This is impressively long and well-balanced though at present not quite as complex. Drink 2023+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

VM 92 (3/2017): Full red. Aromas of dark cherry, smoky minerals and sexy soil tones. Very sweet and broad on entry, then suave and nicely delineated in the mid-palate, displaying complex saline soil tones and cherry and dark berry fruit flavors. This savory Volnay finishes with building toothcoating tannins and terrific chocolatey length. Needs time, but this wine strikes me as more harmonious than the excellent 2013 version was at the same stage. WA 91-93 (12/2015): The 2014 Volnay 1er Cru Champans has a more pointed and angular nose at the moment when compared with the Taillepieds. It is probably the most primal of the Volnay, black cherry and cassis fruit suffused with tangible mineralite, but it needs to be knitted together during the remainder of its elevage. The palate is very well balanced, the wood component again needing time to enmesh, but there is good substance here -- even if I prefer the elegance of the Caillerets on the finish (at the moment). BH 91-93 (4/2016): ( from a huge 3.98 ha parcel.) Once again there is a deft touch of wood apparent on the restrained, cool and pretty array of red berry, earth and softly spice-inflected nose. The wonderfully refined, layered and sleek middle weight flavors possess a polished mouth feel while delivering Outstanding length on the moderately austere and dusty finale. Like the Taillepieds this is quite firm and will need at least 6 to 8 years of cellaring before it will be approachable. Patience required. Drink 2026+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

| VM 92-95 (1/2018): (the entire bottom of this vineyard was fried by frost, according to regisseur François Duvivier): Bright, dark red-ruby. Medicinal blueberry and licorice aromas are lifted by a minty high note; less showy and more restrained on the nose than the Taillepieds and Caillerets today. Then wonderfully dense, primary and pure on the palate, but more vertical and less opulent than the Taillepieds and Caillerets. Strong mineral energy accentuates the impression of vibrancy. A bit less open to inspection today owing to its firm tannic spine. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 89-91 (4/2015): The 2013 Volnay Clos des Angles is quite powerful and intense for the year. Spice, new leather, menthol and tobacco wrap around a core of dark fruit. Hints of reduction are present today that mask some of the fruit. Nevertheless, the 2013 offers good potential and may turn out to be even better than this note suggests. Antonio Galloni. BH 89-91 (4/2015): Here too there is enough reduction to push the underlying fruit to the background but like the Volnay "1er" there is good freshness and ample punch to the delineated and delicious middle weight flavors. Here though there is a bit more concentration present on the lightly mineral-inflected, dusty and slightly austere finish. Drink 2020+. WA 89-91 (12/2014): The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Angles was showing just a touch of reduction when I tasted it. Underneath is some undergrowth, mulch-like scents infusing the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with gently grippy tannins. There is moderate weight in the mouth with a more assertive blackberry and raspberry finish. Fine. |

| BH 90-92 (4/2019): There is a touch of herbal tea character to the spice and ultra-fresh red and dark currant scents that include a pretty floral wisp. The mouth feel of the middle weight flavors is completely different as it can be accurately described as one of lace and grace, all wrapped in a nicely complex and lingering finish that flashes just a bit of youthful austerity. WS 93 (12/2010): A beauty, from its haunting aromas of wild cherry, berry, floral and spice to the silky texture and lingering aftertaste. There's a sinewy feel on the finish, ending on sweet fruit and spice notes. Drink now through 2023. 140 cases imported. BH 92-95 (4/2009): This too is mildly reduced, making the nose difficult to accurately read though the lacy, pure and laser-like precision and focus of the medium weight flavors is nothing short of remarkable and here the emphasis on a base of stone is perhaps even more pronounced than in the Taillepieds, all wrapped in a harmonious, understated yet driving finish that does not seem to stop for several minutes. This is a not a big Ducster but for purity of delivery, it's hard to beat and the balance is impeccable. Don't miss! Outstanding! Drink: 2017+ VM 92 (4/2010): Medium red. Darker aromas of black cherry and spices. Dense and spicy on the palate; fuller and sweeter than the Taillepieds but also quite fresh and built to age. This is still a bit stunted from the mise but the substantial dusty tannins display lovely sweetness. Aeration brought impressive early complexity. WA 91 (6/2010): The d’Angerville’s 2007 Volnay Clos Des Ducs is far more concentrated and youthful in aspect than its Champans counterpart, with blackberry, cherry pit, black tea, crushed stone, and iodine combining with relative firmness of texture, but with compensatory richness of beef marrow adding to its darkly-hued, bitter-edged, somber complexity. I suspect that this palate-staining Volnay will keep longer than most of its ilk in this vintage, perhaps 8-10 years. |

BH 94 (4/2012): A superbly fresh and beautifully layered nose of cool red berry fruit, floral notes and wet stone, the latter of which is present in abundance on the rich yet beautifully detailed middle weight flavors brimming with minerality and energy, all wrapped in a focused, linear and precise finish of huge length, which remains at present youthfully austere. A classic Ducster that will require 10 to 12 years to be at its peak and readers should note that unlike some '08s, this will not be especially approachable young. Drink 2020+. VM 93+ (3/2011): Bright medium red. Pungent aromas of raspberry, cherry, minerals and spices. Lush and silky in the mouth but with terrific energy and a weightless character to the flavors of red fruits, spices and flowers. This round but very young wine has a terrific spine for development in bottle. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins and noteworthy vibrancy. Has the most dimension of this set of 2008s. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 93 (4/2014): Palish bright red. Highly perfumed nose combines redcurrant, cherry, smoky minerals and faded flowers, complicated by earth and caramel nuances. Taut and juicy in the mouth, with a tightly coiled spring of pungent minerality energizing the youthful flavors of ripe cherry, redcurrant, smoke and spices. Much less creamy than the Champans, with a saline calcaire element giving the mid-palate uncanny detail. Finishes sweet, subtle and long, with utterly seamless, fine-grained tannins. With its firm tannins and strong minerality, this should make a great dinner companion--but give it at least six or seven years in the cellar. BH 91 (4/2014): An incredibly perfumed, airy and cool nose speaks of anise, essence of red berry fruit, stone and floral hints. There is a distinctly textured mouth feel to the restrained and beautifully well-detailed and intensely mineral-driven flavors that possess a highly refreshing mouth feel, all wrapped in a youthfully austere, restrained and delicious finish. A lovely and very understated effort that should also reward mid-term cellaring. Drink 2021+. Outstanding! WA 91 (12/2013): The 2011 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs has an accomplished, sophisticated, mineral-driven bouquet that echoes the nascent 2012. The palate is crisp and a little leafy on the entry, something just slightly autumnal about it. The tannins are firm and just a touch austere, but they are neatly embroidered into the black fruit profile. The finish exerts a pleasant grip and it lingers long in the mouth. This is a classy wine hemmed in by an average growing season. These 2011s were all tasted with Guillaume d'Angerville at the domaine in Volnay. |

VM 94 (3/2016): Healthy dark red. Highly complex but youthfully restrained nose offers scents of black fruits, violet, chocolate, menthol and minerals, along with some faintly liqueur-like high tones. Boasts Outstanding density of texture, not to mention great lift and power for this bottling, with almost exotic fruit ripeness leavened by strong acidity. Finishes with spectacular lingering perfume of violet, bitter chocolate, wild herbs and mint. An amazingly strong, bulletproof Volnay for the year--or for any vintage, for that matter. Stephen Tanzer. WS 93 (5/2016): This red offers well-defined cherry, currant and spice flavors, supported by vibrant acidity. Saturated with pure, ripe cherry fruit midpalate, this firms up, yet remains balanced and mouthwatering on the long finish, showing spice and chalk accents. Best from 2018 through 2030. 95 cases imported. WA 92-94 (12/2014): The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs has that citrus-like freshness; that Seville orange marmalade trait that was tangible in a range of mature Clos des Ducs tasted the previous week. There are touches of violet that emerge with continued aeration. The palate is very feminine and refined, laid back almost, but that distracts from the structure underneath and the persistence and minerality on the finish. This is a regal, perhaps one should say, "ducal," Clos des Ducs that should drink beautifully over the next 25-30 years. But as I discovered at the vertical, this vineyard needs several years in the cellar. BH 91-94 (4/2015): (a monopole that measures 2.15 ha.) A gorgeously fresh melange of black raspberry, cherry, tea, violets and anise scents introduces superbly well-detailed middle weight flavors that seem to be built on a base of firm minerality that continues onto the dusty, complex and strikingly persistent finish. As is often the case, this is the most complete wine in the range. Drink 2023+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

| BH 93 (10/2019): Bright medium red. Highly perfumed aromas and flavors of raspberry, cherry, licorice and flowers. On the lean side but with firm acidity giving cut to the aromatic palate. All about perfume today, and a bit dry on the back end. A second bottle showed a similar nose, but with some darker fruits emerging with air. It also offered considerably more mid-palate pliancy of texture as well as more stuffing to buffer its tannins. The finish is quite fresh, with nicely integrated acidity. My score, needless to say, is for the second bottle. (13.3% alcohol; the Clos des Ducs vines were harvested on September 7; 42 hectoliters per hectare produced; 3.63 pH; bottled three weeks before our tasting) (Drink between 2022-2038). BH 90-93 (4/2013): (from a 1.57 ha parcel) This is also quite beguilingly perfumed with an ultra-high-toned nose of pure essence of red pinot fruit that reveals plenty of wet stone character. There is a palpable sense of underlying tension as this is particularly vibrant and this sensation is enhanced by the intense salinity that pervades both the mid-palate as well as the impressively persistent and mouth coating finish. This impeccably well-balanced effort displays the inherent muscularity of a fine Fremiets and will need at least a decade to arrive at its apogee. Drink 2021+. Outstanding! VM 90-93 (2/2013): Bright medium red. Precise, high-pitched aromas and flavors of red cherry, raspberry and chalky minerality. Juicy, vibrant and pure, delivering impressive intensity without any obvious weight. Terrific mineral cut and a firm acid/tannin spine should keep this beauty youthful for many years. Offers Outstanding verve for the vintage. |

WS 93 (5/2016): Aromas and flavors of black pepper highlight the black cherry and black currant fruit in this beautifully integrated red. Firms up, yet remains long and spicy on the fresh aftertaste. Best from 2019 through 2030. 30 cases imported. WA 91-93 (12/2014): The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiet has a very seductive, effortless bouquet that unfolds in the glass with raspberry, wild strawberry and a distant scent of pine cones that is beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle but insistent grip. There is an abiding sense of symmetry here with very good length in the mouth. Tightly coiled at the moment, it will repay four or five years in bottle. This is a refined Volnay. BH 90-92 (4/2015): ( from a 1.57 ha parcel.) There are hints of tea and violets to the dark currant liqueur-like aromas. There is an excellent sense of energy to the overtly mineral-inflected middle weight flavors that possess a dusty texture on the ever-so-slightly warm and austere finish. At present this is not perfectly well-balanced but I suspect that this will harmonize with 7 to 10 years of cellaring. Drink 2021+. VM 90-92 (4/2015): The 2013 Volnay Fremiets is one of the more floral, mid-weight wines in this lineup. Cherry pit, crushed flowers mint and white pepper all take shape in the glass. A bit more pliant on the mid-palate than the aromatic suggests, the Fremiets is another wine where balance rules the day. Distinct stony and saline notes add the final layers of nuance. Antonio Galloni. |

| BH 91-93 (4/2019): A slightly more deeply pitched nose displays an evident spiciness to the plum, dark raspberry and violet-scented aromas. This is very Frémiets in character and a wine that should amply reward extended keeping. Drink 2029+. |

| BH 93 (4/2015): (from a 1.07 ha parcel of 35+ year old vines; note that .4 ha was just grubbed up for replanting.) A touch of reduction is just enough to shave the top notes off the otherwise pure and elegant nose so I would suggest decanting this if you're tempted to try a bottle young. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension and excellent delineation to the mineral-driven and overtly saline flavors that display fine depth on the impressively persistent and well-balanced finish that exhibits plenty of the classic austerity of a young Taillepieds. In the category of a very minor nit there is a hint of warmth but I quite liked this anyway. drink 2024+. Outstanding! |

WS 95 (11/2016): A powerful, dense version, evoking cherry, currant and spice flavors, with underlying accents of mineral and tobacco. Tight and chalky on the finish, but showing promise. Best from 2020 through 2040. 60 cases imported. WA 91-93 (12/2015): The 2014 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru has a very composed bouquet with intense red cherries, wild strawberry and raspberry preserve aromas, offering that sensuality Burgundy-lovers seek from a Charmes-Chambertin. The palate is medium-bodied and showing the hand of the oak a little at the moment, but it is in proportion with the fruit and the finish maintains fine delineation. VM 90-92 (1/2016): (from vines in the highest part of Mazoyères): Healthy dark red. Aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, licorice, anise and bitter chocolate show less floral character than the Combottes. Rich, fine-grained and deep, conveying a chocolatey ripeness but coming across as a bit earth-bound, with a slightly more rustic texture than the Combottes. This plush wine finishes with big, ripe, chewy tannins. BH 92-95 (1/2016): (from a 1.13 ha parcel in Mazoyères that abuts the Route des Grands Crus.) A more deeply pitched and notably earthier nose also displays plenty of sauvage character. This gamy element continues onto the concentrated medium weight plus flavors that possess a caressing mouth feel despite the evident muscularity of the austere and explosive finish. This is very Mazoyères in character yet it is a bit less rustic than usual. Worth a look provided that you have the patience to cellar it. Drink 2029+. |

JD 96 (11/2020): Partially destemmed and brought up in 20% new French oak, the 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a smoky, powerful bouquet of mulled black cherries, mulberries, candied violets, licorice, and forest floor. These carry to a full-bodied, concentrated, gorgeous wine with silky tannins, a layered, multi-dimensional texture, plenty of structure, and a great, great finish. This is seriously good juice that's going to benefit from 3-5 years of bottle age and cruise for two decades. (Drink between 2023-2043) VM 94 (11/2022): The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a sensual nose with vivacious red berry fruit, orange pith and light tertiary scents, becoming more and more loamy whilst retaining delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, creamy in texture that belies the structure underneath. Judiciously spiced towards the finish with just a very subtle menthol note, this is a classy offering. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting. (Drink between 2026-2048) Neal Martin. |

VM 94-96 (1/2023): The 2021 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is a little more "gourmand" on the nose, cohering with time in the glass, loamy, almost peaty aromas emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-honed tannins. Lovely symmetry here, with a slight creaminess in texture towards the finish, where it feels very persistent. This is a lovely Charmes-Chambertin that should evolve wonderfully in bottle. Neal Martin. BH 90-92 (1/2023): A more deeply pitched combination offers up notes of plum, wild dark cherry and plenty of earth. The succulent and solidly powerful medium-bodied flavors are more muscular though not nearly as refined, all wrapped in a detailed, dusty and moderately austere finale that isn't quite as well-balanced. Drink 2033+. |

| BH 89-92 (1/2020): (from .45 ha parcel of 70+ year old vines.) Here there is no reduction to the surprisingly high-toned aromas of red currant, black cherry and whiffs of herbal tea and rose petal. There is once again a really lovely texture to the round, plush and delicious medium-bodied flavors that culminate in a compact and firm finish that flashes a touch of edginess though markedly less so than the Sentiers. VM 95-979 (1/2023): The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes 1er Cru is very convincing on the nose, a mixture of red and black fruit, forest floor, hints of crushed limestone and orange zest. So much vigour. The palate is medium-bodied with beautifully integrated oak, fine-grain tannins, taut and linear with a sublime, quite persistent finish that you just want to keep drinking again and again. Outstanding. Neal Martin. BH 90-93 (1/2023): Strikingly pure, airy and distinctly cool aromas include those of essence of red cherry, plum, violet and a whiff of anise character. The beautifully textured and highly sophisticated flavors coat the palate with dry extract on the sneaky long finish. This is a seriously pretty wine though it will need to add depth to merit the upper end of my projected range. Drink 2031+. |

| VM 92-94 (1/2023): The 2021 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Blanchards 1er Cru, which contains just over 30% whole bunches, has a little more mineral expression than the Les Millandes, focus and precise. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins, very citrus fresh, blood orange and tangerine towards the grainy finish. This is very promising. Neal Martin. |

VM 92 (3/2017): Good medium red. Captivating aromas of cherry, minerals, black olive and rooty underbrush. Densely packed, ripe and seamless, but with an impression of calcaire weightlessness. Still a bit youthfully medicinal but this saline premier cru boasts serious inner-mouth tension and finishes with sweet tannins and very good savory persistence. Stephen Tanzer. WS 91 (12/2016): Ripe, with cherry, currant and floral flavors, this red is supple, backed by solid tannins. Remains elegant and balanced, presenting a chalky, peppery finish. Best from 2018 through 2032. 75 cases imported. BH 91-93 (1/2016): (from 40+ year old vines.) There is yet again excellent volume to the solidly concentrated medium weight flavors that possess more refinement but less muscle and power before culminating in a lingering and harmonious finish where the supporting tannins are dense but fine. Good stuff and worth a look. Drink 2026+. NM 89 (9/2017): Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, Domaine Arlaud's 2014 Morey St Denis 1er Cru les Ruchots has a fairly straightforward but appealing nose of brambly red fruit and light gravelly aromas. The palate is soft on the entry, more Chambolle-like than Morey, and it just loses a little depth and vigor toward the tapered finish. This is not bad, but in present company it comes across a tad nondescript and needs more weight and presence. |

| VM 93-95 (1/2023): The 2021 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Ruchots 1er Cru is more introspective at the moment, with fine intensity, the fruit is darker than the Aux Chezaux, with hints of graphite in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins, one of the "juiciest" Moreys that I have encountered with candied orange peel and spicebox on the finish. Superb. Neal Martin. |

| BH 91 (1/2011): ( from an enormous 7.5 ha parcel of vines planted in the early 1950s.) The fresh and densely fruited dark berry nose is quite ripe with an intensely earthy and sauvage character that extends to the impressively rich, even opulent full-bodied flavors that possess so much extract that there is a chewy aspect to the mouth coating and concentrated mid-palate, all wrapped in a long, powerful, rustic and dramatic finish. This is an impressive effort though note that patience will be required. Drink 2018+. Outstanding! |

VM 93-95 (12/2021): The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Forêts Saint Georges 1er Cru is very elegant on the nose with brambly red berry fruit, touches of damp loamy soil and just a very slight ferrous aroma. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very focused and pure with just the right amount of acidity. Very harmonious, this is a gorgeous Clos des Forêts that should give 15-20 years of drinking pleasure (at least). Neal Martin. BH 91-93 (1/2022): 9from an enormous 7.1 ha monopole planted in the early 1950s.) Deep ruby. Markedly earthy aromas include notes of garrigue, poached plum, cassis and a smoky component. The rich, energetic and well-detailed larger-scaled flavors evidence solid muscle and power on the moderately rustic, balanced and complex finale. This beautifully long effort is a classic Nuits in style. Drink 2032+. Outstanding! |

| VM 92+ (3/2023): The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru, which was raised in 18% new oak, is a wine that I loved when I tasted it from barrel. Now with a couple of years in bottle, I feel the nose has closed down a little, yet still offers some captivating black cherry, briary and light cassis aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, quite linear on the entry. It gains weight towards the finish, while retaining satisfying weight. Tasted at the Domaine de L’Arlot tasting at La Cabotte in London. Drink between 2022-2042. Neal Martin. |

VM 92 (5/2019): The 2000 Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epéneaux has a well defined bouquet with raspberry, crushed strawberry, undergrowth and bay leaf scents. I appreciate the discreet manner in which it gains intensity with aeration, repaying those with the nous to decant this wine. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin: a well proportioned Clos des Epéneaux with a dash of spice enlivening the finish. Returning to the 2001, there is a completeness to the 2000, I find that it has matured better. Tasted at Sarah Marsh’s 2000 and 2001 horizontal tasting. (Drink between 2018-2028). Neal Martin. BH 88 (9/2008): Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru Red) Here the moderately ripe nose is composed of mostly primary red berry fruit though there are notes of initial secondary development as well as subtle earth and underbrush that are followed by rich, round and serious flavors that display very good length supported by slightly austere finishing tannins that are ever-so-slightly drying. While clearly a very good effort, this is by no means exceptional by the standards of this wine. WA 85 (2/2018): The 2000 Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux dates from a different epoch in the domaine's history, and it's a far cry from the graceful, elegantly intense wines being made at the domaine today. Notes of red-black fruit mingle with the strong signature of cedary, minty new oak, introducing a wine which is simultaneously austere and open-knit, carrying too much tannin from extraction and new oak for its own good. |

BH 94 (4/2012): (the 5+ ha Clos is composed of approximately 80% Petits Epenots and 20% Grands Epenots; the vine ages run from 18 to 75+ years of age.) This is also quite ripe but agreeably fresh with pure aromas of mocha, red currant, cassis, black cherry, warm earth, violets and subtle spice hints. There is good energy to the intense and admirably rich full-bodied flavors that envelope the palate with velvety sap on the beautifully balanced and impressively persistent finish. I very much like the sense of underlying tension because despite this being a big wine with plenty of concentration, the balance is impeccable and there is absolutely nothing ponderous about this complete effort. There is a hint of backend warmth but otherwise, this is really most impressive. Note however that this very firm effort will require plenty of cellar time. Drink 2029+. Outstanding! WA 94 (4/2012): The 2009 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux is flat-out beautiful. Layers of racy, exotic fruit caress the palate as the wine opens up in the glass. The 2009 is quite typical of the year, yet possesses fabulous overall harmony. Although exuberant today, the Clos des Epeneaux will deliver tons of pleasure for many years. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2030. VM 93 (4/2012): (this was racked only once, a month before being bottled in June of 2011): Good bright medium red. Fresh red berries, licorice and truffle on the nose, complicated by tobacco and iron. Dense, lush and packed with fruit; really showcases the richness of a sunny year without turning heavy. Deep, saline, seamless wine, with a thick, soil-driven finish. Finishes with surprising verve. Very impressive. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 94-96 (1/2014): In most vintages, there are three distinct cuvees that make up the final blend for the flagship Pommard Clos des Epeneaux, but in 2012 there are just two. The first cuvee, from the top of the vineyard, is intensely tannic and structured. Floral notes lead to dark red cherries and crushed rocks in a wine that is all about crystalline purity and delineation. The second cuvee, from the bottom of the hill, presents more depth and volume. A representation of the final blend is striking. Sadly, the entire production will be bottled only in magnums, of which there will be just 4,000 to go around, versus the normal production of about 22,000 bottles. Readers who can find the 2012 should not hesitate, as it is shaping up to be one of the wines of the vintage. Antonio Galloni. BH 91-94 (4/2014): ( the 5+ ha Clos is composed of approximately 80% Petits Epenots and 20% Grands Epenots; the vine ages run from 18 to 75+ years of age; this will be bottled only in magnum.) An exceptionally fresh and relatively elegant nose features notes of various red berries, earth and a discreet spiciness. There is a beguiling mouth feel to the medium-bodied, concentrated and powerful flavors that are shaped by very firm yet ripe tannins on the palate coating finish that is sneaky long. Note that the suggested initial drinking window is based on magnum format. WA 91+ (10/2015): Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux from Domaine Comte Armand has more red rather than black fruit on the nose with plenty of wild blackberry and raspberry aromas coming through, though there is some new oak still to be resolved. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannin, good acidity but again, the oak still conspicuous and more expressive than the terroir at the moment. Then again, with knowledge of the producer, I know how this wine sheds its tannins and benefits from several years in bottle. This is one of those Burgundy wines that could go either way, but given the grower, will give it the benefit of the doubt because of those aromatics. Drink 2030+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

| VM 90 (10/2023): Former winemaker Benjamin Leroux oversaw the 2013 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru, though Paul Zanetti told me he finished the aging in barrel. In this vintage, the wine was completely de-stemmed due to hail damage. The nose is well defined though simple, tertiary, with plenty of damp undergrowth/autumn leaf notes. The palate is medium-bodied with rustic tannins and fine weight. It's ferrous in style, with dark chocolate and tobacco leaf toward the finish. A little introspective, perhaps? This is a decent muscular Clos des Epeneaux, though not in the same class as the recent top vintages. (Drink between 2022-2032). Neal Martin. |

| BH 91 (4/2017): ( the 5+ ha Clos is composed of approximately 80% Petits Epenots and 20% Grands Epenots; the vine ages run from 18 to 75+ years of age.) This is markedly reduced at present so I would strongly suggest decanting it if you are tempted to open a bottle young. Otherwise the supple, round and utterly delicious medium-bodied flavors possess a sleek muscularity and solid intensity, all wrapped in a lingering finish that presently displays a hint of an edge that may or may not ever round off. As such my rating is a compromise as I suspect that this will develop even better complexity with age and thus even if the balance isn't perfect, the '14 Clos des Epeneaux should still make for a lovely wine. Drink 2024+. |

WA 95 (4/2018): The 2015 Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux is fabulous, wafting from the glass with notes of wild berries, orange peel, cinnamon, rich soil and espresso. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and layered, with a lovely line of bright acidity, fine-grained tannins, sappy energy, and terrific depth and tension at the core. This is a great Clos des Epeneaux from Paul Zinetti. BH 94 (4/2018): Here the nose is notably riper than the 2016 version yet it manages to retain good freshness to the pure red berry fruit, earthy, floral and spice-suffused aromas. The decidedly dense, tautly muscular and powerful broad-shouldered flavors are underpinned by notably firm tannins and outstanding length on the beautifully complex finale that exhibits just enough warmth to warrant mentioning. This is quite clearly built-to-age and it's going to need it. In a word, impressive. (Drink starting 2030). VM 92+ (11/2018): The 2015 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru takes time to coalesce in the glass, eventually revealing black cherries, raspberries, autumn leaves and a touch of incense. It is understated and classic in style, but seems to grow with aeration. The crisp palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin and plenty of tension – a bit linear and strict at the moment, though I suspect this will age with real style once it has gotten through its adolescence. Do not touch for 5 to 7 years. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. (Drink between 2023-2045). Neal Martin. |

VM 94 (10/2019): The 2016 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru has a classic, undergrowth infused bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, hints of stewed black tea emerging with time, tobacco and rose petal. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, succulent and juicy with a fleshy, almost Volnay-like finish that is very appealing. This is a well crafted and comparatively approachable Pommard. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. (Drink between 2021-2040). Neal Martin. BH 93 (3/2023): An agreeably fresh and still relatively primary nose freely reveals its aromas of both red and dark berries, newly turned earth and a hint of wood spice. There remains very good vibrancy to the velvet-textured medium-bodied flavors that flash a touch of bracing bitter pit fruit character on the still firm and sneaky long finale. This balanced effort is coming along nicely and while it could certainly be enjoyed now with 30 minutes of air, I would be inclined to hold it for another 5ish plus years first. | BH 93 (4/2022): A soft dollop of wood frames the distinctly earthy aromas of plum, black pinot fruit and violet that are definitely ripe yet remain nicely fresh. The medium-bodied flavors possess a beguiling texture and fine mid-palate concentration thanks to the abundant dry extract that serves to buffer the firm and vaguely rustic tannic spine supporting the balanced and beautifully persistent finale. This is marked by the warmth of the 2018 vintage yet even so, it manages to remain inviting and refreshing. In a word, excellent. Drink 2030+. |

Very perfumed and floral scents on the nose, dark cherries, bergamot, damp earth and touches of clove, later hints of violet and blood orange (traits that I observed out of barrel). BH 91-93 (1/2006): The nose is slightly riper with spicy dark pinot fruit and earth notes leading to rich, sweet, round and powerful flavors packing plenty of punch and volume supported by a dusty and firm tannic spine that is completely buried beneath ample sap. This is impressive and a bit showier than the Clos de Vougeot just now. (Drink starting 2014). VM 89-92 (3/2006): Medium red. Complex, aromatic nose combines currant and tobacco. Then suave and silky in the mouth, with lovely vinosity and cut. Very pinot in texture but not yet especially complex, conveying an impression of greater minerality and higher acidity than the Clos Vougeot. Today Lachaux prefers the Clos Vougeot. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 89-92 (1/2007): This too is heavily reduced and about all that is really discernable is the ample wood spice that can also be found in moderate amounts on the mouth coating and impressively concentrated flavors that are also carrying lots of gas. The finish is chewy, powerful and seriously long and my marks are given on the basis of the quality of the impeccable raw materials as the wine is pretty awkward today. (Drink starting 2013) VM 89-91 (4/2007): Bright, dark red-ruby. Sexy aromas of dark raspberry, flowers and smoky oak, with a touch of reduction. Rich, pliant and sweet, with lovely breadth to its spicy flavors. Boasts plenty of fat but not quite the purity or fine-grained texture of the Proces. But then this is slower to show itself due to the late end to the malolactic fermentation, notes Lachaux. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 89-91 (4/2007): Dark red. Brooding aromas of dark berries, bitter chocolate and game. Broader and more muscular than the Hautes Maizieres but with a bit less lift, clarity and floral character. A fat, chewy style, very Nuits-Saint-Georges in its density of texture. Stephen Tanzer. BH 89-91 (1/2007): Deep ruby. A pungent nose of heavy reduction, wood spice and black cherry fruit leads to earthy, rich, sweet and sappy flavors that are intense, well muscled and concentrated and while there is a trace of rusticity, the tannins are relatively fine. Again, Lachaux has crafted a first rate villages. (Drink starting 2013). |

BH 91 (3/2013): (opened from personal storage). A still wonderfully complex nose of classic Vosne and now fully mature aromas that brim with Asian spices leads to seductive, complex, fine and fully resolved flavors that possess excellent depth on the strikingly long finish. Unfortunately, this seems to have lost some of the vibrancy that it once had and I would be drinking up over the next 5 years or so even if there is no particular rush. Tasted multiple times through 2005 though only once recently but presuming the bottle that I had was representative, this is beginning to decline ever-so-slightly. One other recent bottle displayed noticeable volatile acidity and was not at all like the bottle described above. Drink now. WA 92 (8/1995): Arnoux's top two cuvees should be no surprise to his fans. This estate has always made exquisite Vosne-Romanee Les Suchots, and this vineyard (40-70-year old vines) has once again turned in a DRC-look-alike performance. From its huge nose of Asian spices, smoke, sweet berry fruit, and toast, to its exquisite richness, voluptuous texture, and medium to full-bodied, lavishly fruity, intense finish, this is a remarkably rich, hedonistic red Burgundy. I would opt for drinking it now and over the next 10-12 years. Arnoux's 1993s are unequivocally major successes for the vintage. Before his death, Arnoux and the man currently responsible for the wine-making, Pascal Lachaux, had been voluntarily moving toward less fertilization, higher extraction, and more natural bottling. To their credit, the 1993s were bottled without fining or filtration. These are promising wines, with considerable complexity, well-integrated tannin, and copious quantities of sweet, expansive Pinot Noir fruit. |

| VM 92+ (3/1999): Fresh, deep red-ruby color. Sappy, higher-pitched, very complex aromas of cassis, raspberry, minerals and game. Terrific concentration and freshness, but slow to open in the glass. Thick but lively; a floral note contributes to the wine's impression of brightness. Finishes very long and subtle, with a burst of dark berries. Premier cru with the palate presence and nobility of a grand cru. Stephen Tanzer. |

WA 94 (6/2004): Medium to full-bodied and chewy-textured, the 2002 Vosne-Romanee Les Suchots boasts intense aromas of spiced black fruits that are intermingled with hints of herbs. Produced from a parcel located in the finest sector of this well-known vineyard, high on the hill, nestled between Echezeaux and Vosne-Romanee Beaux Monts, this wine bursts forth on the palate displaying interminable waves of sappy red fruits. Focused, seamless, and revealing exceptional structure as well as length, this is a grand cru hiding in a premier cru’s clothing. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2017. VM 94 (4/2005): Red-ruby, a bit less saturated than the Echezeaux. Knockout nose combines raspberry, Asian spices, iron, cocoa powder, white truffle and subtle floral perfume. Sweet and silky but with strong, integrated acidity giving the explosive dark fruit, violet and mineral flavors great purity and verve. Wonderfully smooth and lush, and yet this boasts the precision of flavor of the 2002 vintage in spades. Explodes and reverberates on the finish, with ripe tannins buried in sweet fruit. Consistently one of the sexiest premier crus made in Burgundy. BH 92 (1/2005): Deep ruby. An explosive nose of superbly complex red and black fruit aromas cut with a distinct geranium note lead to delicious, pure and extremely spicy flavors of mouth coating extract and remarkable intensity and while they are not as big or robust as those of the Clos de Vougeot, they are finer and better balanced. The length here is phenomenal and Lachaux continues his indisputable dominance as the reference standard for this vineyard. In short, this is a real stunner of wine that should age magnificently. Drink 2012+. Outstanding! |

VM 88 (1/2017): (bottled in mid-August; vinified with 80% whole clusters): Lovely spicy Pinot aromas and flavors of raspberry, minerals, flowers and dark chocolate. A very fresh, juicy Bourgogne Rouge with terrific gulpability. Stephen Tanzer. BH 88 (1/2017): (from 60+ year old vines based on the original pinot fin strain that is so highly regarded today.) A cool, pretty and pure nose reflects notes of various red berries, floral and a hint of earth. There is terrific energy and fine detail to the utterly delicious flavors that possess outstanding depth and length for a regional wine. Recommended. Drink 2018+. Outstanding Top Value! |

WA 89 (6/2010): Smoky Latakia tobacco and bittersweet herbs accent the bright, fresh red berry fruit of Lachaux’s 2008 Chambolle-Musigny, with the decadent side of this appellation revealing itself in suggestions of forest floor, well-hung game, and faded lily inner-mouth perfume. Refined tannins underlie a finish tinged with smoke, fruit pit bitterness, and considerable intrigue for a village-level wine. I would expect this to provide admirable satisfaction for at least a half dozen years. BH 87-89 (1/2010): Very mild reduction cannot suppress the otherwise lightly spiced high-toned and cool red pinot fruit that gives way to supple but precise flavors that possess ample verve and a touch of minerality on the dusty, long and linear finish. I very much like the mouth feel here and this has the potential to be a very good villages. Drink 2014+. VM 87 (3/2011): Good medium red. Pure aromas of blackberry and blueberry lifted by mint and menthol. Juicy and supple, with moderate intensity and ripe, harmonious acidity. Nicely balanced wine with a savory finish featuring slightly dry tannins. Pascal Lachaux believes that 2009 will be a "mid-term vintage," while the 2008s "will be good early and late" and may never shut down. |

BH 93-95 (1/2012): (from a .53 ha parcel) A fresh but quite restrained and noticeably cool nose of herb and stone-infused wild red berry fruit aromas precedes impressively intense, powerful and agreeably rich medium-bodied flavors that ooze a fine minerality on the wonderfully detailed flavors that explode on the mouth coating and overtly stony finish. Like the Suchots, this is one impressive effort with Outstanding upside potential though note that at least 15 years of cellar time will be required. Drink 2025+. Don't miss! VM 90-92 (1/2012): (from 55-year-old vines picked six days after the Vosne-Romanee premier crus in 2010): Good full, bright medium red. Aromas of small wild dark berries, licorice, coffee and sweet oak perked up by pepper and herbs. Fat and sweet, but without quite the definition of the Reignots, Clos Vougeot or Echezeaux. With its creamy, candied qualities and herbal edge, this suggests a wider range of fruit ripeness than most of the other 2010s here. A bit clenched on the back. |

BH 94 (1/2014): (from a .53 ha parcel). An exquisitely fresh and pure nose of cool red currant and mineral reduction slides gracefully into detailed, precise and restrained medium-bodied flavors that possess excellent verve and a taut muscularity. This really brims with minerality on the mouth coating finish that delivers super length. Terrific. Drink 2023+. VM 91-94 (2/2013): Good deep red-ruby. Cool aromas and flavors of raspberry, red cherry and crushed rock lifted by pepper and herbs. Pure, juicy and precise if a bit youthfully imploded, but already showing terrific sappy intensity. Finishes very long and perfumed, with a serious tannic spine. Promises to be Lachaux's best vintage yet for this cuvee, which he initiated with the 2008 after purchasing these old vines from Christopher Newman. |

| BH 92-95 (1/2020): This too is very floral in character with its cool essence of red cherry with hints of the sauvage and earth lurking in the background. The super-sleek and lacy middle weight flavors appear to be built on a base of pungent minerality before terminating in a firm, serious and youthfully austere finale. This is a classic Latricières that will require extended patience if you wish to enjoy it at its peak. Drink 2033+. |

VM 93-96 (1/2016): (100% vendange entier; 80% new oak): Deep red-ruby. Alluring aromas of black raspberry, licorice and minerals show a noble, deep vegetal nuance that reminded me of a young Romanee-Conti. The youthfully unevolved middle palate displays the depth, pliancy and freshness of the vintage at its best. Finishes extremely long and ripely tannic, with palate-saturating sweetness and mineral pungency. These 90-year-old vines were originally planted by the father of Robert Arnoux, according to Pascal, who added that the estate's vines in Suchots are even older, at 94. Stephen Tanzer. BH 95 (1/2017): (from a .375 ha parcel situated by La Grande Rue.) An even more elegant nose of spicy and floral red and black pinot fruit is nuanced by subtle traces of sandalwood, Asian-style tea, soy and anise. There is fine concentration to the relatively powerful sappy and mouth coating flavors that are shaped by wonderfully fine-grained tannins on the hugely long, balanced and moderately austere finale. This terrific and notably powerful effort is also quite silky yet it should have zero difficulty rewarding at least 15 to 20 years of cellar time. Drink 2029+. |

WS 89 (3/2013): Exhibits purity to the cherry, raspberry and floral flavors, with a juicy texture and bright structure. Balanced on the firm side, offering a lingering, spicy finish. Best from 2015 through 2022. 667 cases made. BH 87-90 (1/2012): Here too there is discreet wood influence setting off the otherwise ripe and spicy red and blue pinot fruit that complements well the equally spicy, rich, supple and round middle weight flavors that possess a seductive texture as well as a mouth coating, dusty and well-balanced finish that displays a touch of austerity. Drink 2016+. VM 87-89 (2/2012): Good deep medium red. Slightly reduced aromas of black cherry, violet and licorice. Sweet and supple but reduced, with a leathery quality in the mouth and a slightly tart berry quality. The chewy finish features chocolatey oak. This needs a racking. |

Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Les Chaumes |

WA 90 (6/2010): Like most of the premier crus in this collection, 50% new wood was employed here and it’s a tribute to the wine, Lachaux, or tonnelier Stephane Chassin – perhaps to all collectively – that there isn’t any overt woodiness in evidence. The deeper, more clay-rich soils in this site vis-a-vis most of his others is, opines Lachaux’s, the reason for a slightly more rustic tanninity in his 2008 Vosne Romanee Les Chaumes. Ripe purple plum and blackberry are allied to alkaline and overtly chalky elements and shadowed by their distilled counterparts. Despite this wine’s prominent tannins, an unexpected sweetness and mouth-watering savor wells-up in its seriously sustained finish, convincing me that this will be worth cellaring for a few years and is likely to deliver fascination up to at least age 8. That said, one will need to bear in mind the tannins and overt minerality in pairing it, and those not enamored of Pinot’s dark side or of unapologetic tannins will be less impressed than am I. VM 90 (4/2011): Deep red with ruby tones. Complex aromas of dark berries, flowers and spices, complemented by sweet oak and lifted by a peppery nuance. Not a fleshy wine but juicy, firm and aromatic, with lovely balancing acidity giving the wine vibrancy. Not the last word in concentration but finishes with sweet tannins and very good length. Pascal Lachaux noted that in most of his premier and grand crus, he made more wine in 2008 than in either 2009 or 2007. BH 89-92 (1/2010): A more complex and, not surprisingly, notably spicier nose of layered red and blue pinot fruit with plum and violet nuances that complement well the rich, full and concentrated medium-bodied flavors that are on the somber side today before culminating in a firmer and more obviously structured finish that delivers excellent length. This should improve for up to a decade. Drink 2016+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

WS 91 (4/2014): Bursting with cherry, raspberry and floral flavors, this is supple and intense. The firm, vibrant structure creates harmony, while the fruit and mineral notes finish long and satisfying. Best from 2015 through 2023. 350 cases made. BH 90-93 (1/2013): A highly spiced nose of both red and black pinot fruit is trimmed in hints of earth and sandalwood. The very generous and impressively rich medium weight flavors are blessed with an abundance of dry extract that imparts a beguilingly seductive texture to the lush, balanced and persistent finish. This is first rate as Chaumes rarely possesses this level of potential quality. Drink 2018+. Outstanding! VM 90-93 (2/2013): (racked and sulfited): Good bright, dark red. Raspberry, spices, flowers and licorice on the scented nose. Dense, sweet and creamy, with a dominant flavor of sappy maraschino cherry. Finishes impressively long and palate-saturating, with ripe tannins and good medicinal reserve. Lachaux noted that this cuvee used to be harder, but is very supple in both 2011 and 2010. Excellent potential. |

| BH 94 (1/2021): ( from a .45 ha parcel situated at the very top of the vineyard; Les Grands Suchots is the name for the upper portion of the vineyard and was in use by a few domaines up through the 1970s.) A distinctly floral nose offers up a beguiling blend of very ripe red and dark pinot fruit, sandalwood, Asian-style tea and plenty of spice whiffs. There is a highly refined mouthfeel to the rich, suave and super-seductive medium-bodied flavors that tighten up quickly on the balanced and impressively persistent finale. This youthfully austere effort is very Suchots in character and an excellent example that should age gracefully for the next 15+ years. Drink 2033+. Outstanding! |

VM 88 (3/2014): The 2011 Bourgogne is a pretty entry-level offering from Denis Bachelet. Blue/purplish fruit, sweet tobacco and licorice are some of the notes that inform the supple, easygoing finish. This is a terrific wine in its class. (Drink between 2014-2016). Antonio Galloni. WA 88 (2/2014): The entry-level 2011 Bourgogne Rouge has a lovely leafy bouquet with dark earthy fruit that feels natural and refined. The palate is medium-bodied with raspberry and strawberry fruit on the entry, fine tannins and a pleasant supple finish. This is uncomplicated and totally delicious. Drink now-2016. |

WA 88-90 (6/2015): The 2012 Bourgogne comes from two parcels in “Les Pressonnier” and “Les Grand Champs” and sees no new oak. It has a captivating bouquet of brambly black fruit that is very well defined. The palate is well balanced with sappy black fruit on the entry, nicely judged acidity and a natural, pastille-like finish. This is uncomplicated but astutely crafted, downright delicious Burgundy. VM 88-90 (1/2014): A great introduction to the vintage here, Bachelet's 2012 Bourgogne is endowed with superb depth and purity in its class. Red stone fruits, plums, spices, menthol and licorice inform this striking, expressive beauty. There is a surprising amount of structure for a Bourgogne. (Drink between 2014-2020). Antonio Galloni. BH 87-89 (1/2014): There is a gentle touch of wood to the spicy red and dark berry fruit aromas that convey a real sense of earth that carries over to the impressively rich and utterly delicious flavors that despite the obvious ripeness retain a fine sense of energy and freshness on the lingering finish. This is a really good Bourgogne and absolutely worth a look. (Drink starting 2016). |

WA 94 (12/2009): Pre-selection and rigorous sorting appear to have eliminated any negative impact of hail in Bachelet's 2006 Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes, but with the result that this virtually always intense and well-structured wine from 80 year old vines is even more so than usual. Bitter-sweet herbal, tarry, and almost liqueur-like dark berry concentrates (cassis and black raspberry) – along with low-toned roast meatiness – inform a seamless palate, softer to the touch and with a more restrained impression of acidity than the old vines village Gevrey, yet still plenty of vivacious primary fruit juiciness. Hints of sealing wax and inner-mouth perfume of peony, heliotrope, and rose add intrigue and allure. Resin, iodine, and wet stone convey a sense of depth in the lingering finish, and speaking of "lingering," the empty glass smells so sweetly fruited and floral as well as intriguingly mineral that its perfume alone will seem worth the price of admission. "I was really concerned to retain acidity here," comments Bachelet, who professes to be less than completely happy with some of his wines from the ripest vintages. "I'm looking for a wine with vivacity and equilibrium," he adds, "not a California style." He certainly got a beauty, and you would be well advised to give any bottles 3-4 years rest before following for another half dozen or more. BH 91-94 (1/2008): (from a .44 ha parcel of 90+ year old vines situated directly across from Chambertin; the yields are so low and the vines so exposed that Bachelet says that he always harvests this parcel first.) Despite being harvested first, this is clearly the ripest wine in the range where the wonderfully dense fruit is highlighted by a background touch of wood that continues onto the refined, pure and concentrated flavors that are supported by dense but fine tannins and flat out terrific length. This is a lovely wine in every respect and while not exactly understated, everything does seem to be in perfect proportion. Drink 2014+. |

There is enough wood to be easily perceptible though not so much as to impede an appreciation of the spicy dark berry fruit, earth and underbrush suffused nose. | BH 89-92 (1/2015): ( from vines averaging between 60 and 70 years of age located in Les Champs Perriers, En Deree, Sylvie, Les Jeunes Rois, La Justice, La Burie and La Platière.) A discreet application of wood intertwines with notes of black cherry, earth, humus and a hint of the sauvage. This is also quite lush though with more evident muscle to the medium-bodied flavors that are shaped by firmer and more prominent tannins on the balanced and lingering finish. This too delivers excellent quality for its level and will also drink well young if desired. Drink 2021+. Outstanding Top Value! |

WA 91 (1/2020): The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes is also showing beautifully, wafting from the glass with aromas of cassis, plums and cherries mingled with sweet soil tones, grilled meats and dark chocolate. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, broad and textural, with a velvety attack, lovely purity of fruit and a long, precise finish. BH 89-91 (1/2019): Soft wood sets off the pretty and ultra-fresh aromas of dark currant, spice and distinct earth scents. The sleek and very rich medium weight flavors possess a caressing yet powerful mouthfeel, all wrapped in a saline-inflected finish that offers very fine depth and persistence. This should drink well young but have no problem rewarding mid-term cellaring. (Drink starting 2025) VM 90-92 (1/2019): Matured in around 50% new oak, the 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes has (another) gorgeous and pure bouquet with small dark cherries, raspberry preserve and subtle violet notes. The new oak is seamlessly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with supple red and black fruit, lightly spiced with a slightly confit-like finish. Divine. Neal Martin. |

WA 90-92 (1/2020): The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes soars from the glass with a rich bouquet of cassis, plums and dark berries mingled with notes of rose petal, loamy soil and grilled meats. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and sapid, with fine concentration, ripe tannins and an expansive finish. Broader and more muscular by comparison with the finer-boned, more incisive Evocelles, this is a classic expression of Gevrey-Chambertin. BH 89-91 (1/2020): This is aromatically similar to the Côte de Nuits-Villages except that the sauvage component is even more prominent. The solidly constituted medium-bodied flavors possess an interesting mouthfeel in that it's at once caressing yet markedly powerful, all wrapped in a mildly warm finale. The tannins are firm but well-buffered and this could be enjoyed on the younger side if that's your preference. (Drink starting 2026) VM 89-91 (1/2020): The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes sees 40% new oak. It has a beautifully defined bouquet of pure raspberry preserve, cranberry and floral scents that unfurl in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a citrus-fresh opening and marmalade and tangerine notes infusing the red fruit. The pretty, very expressive finish maybe just misses the depth of, say, the 2016. Still, this is a lovely wine. Neal Martin. |

WA 88-89 (6/2010): Smoky black tea, pungent brown spices, and tart cherry inform a Barthod 2008 Chambolle-Musigny of enervating brightness yet incipient textural richness. Tart and pungent in its lasting finish, this will no doubt strike some tasters as leaning toward austerity, but I anticipate an exuberant, highly versatile and stimulating performer at table over the next half dozen years if not longer. “Especially in a challenging vintage," notes Barthod, “my village Chambolle benefits from originating in so many and such diverse locations." VM 87-90 (4/2010): Full, bright red. Pretty aromas of raspberry and flowers. Juicy, intensely flavored and perfumed; with its sappy acidity, this really stimulates the salivary glands. Finishes with suave tannins and noteworthy energy. As strong an early showing for this straight village wine as I can remember. Of course, this wine had the advantage of having been racked at the beginning of September, whereas the premier crus had been racked just a couple weeks before my early November visit. BH 86-89 (1/2010): A more elegant and ever-so-slightly riper nose also displays very high-toned red pinot fruit that is in keeping with the lacy, textured, detailed and minerally middle weight flavors that are racy, linear and precise on the firm and persistent finish. This is not overly complex, at least not yet though this may come with a few years in bottle. Drink: 2013+. |

| BH 92 (1/2008): (50+ year old vines) This is quite densely fruited with a layered but tight nose of red, dark berry and violet aromas liberally sprinkled with ample, and pungent, warm earth notes that can also be found in abundance on the powerful and generous flavors that tighten up considerably on the rather linear and well-focused finish. There is good energy here and excellent concentration and the overall character is frank and direct though not rustic. Drink 2015+. Outstanding! |

VM 90 (11/2022): The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru has a cohesive bouquet with brambly red fruit, sous-bois, crushed stone and light tobacco scents. There is some reduction at play and in fact, it becomes stronger with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with pure red fruit on the entry, cranberry and raspberry, quite taut and linear with a Morey-like austerity that feels fresh, but serious, on the finish. Fine, but it needs some bottle age. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting. BH 92-94 (1/2020): A more restrained nose grudgingly reveals the essence of plum where additional breadth is present in the form of black raspberry and violet scents. The palate impression provides an interesting contrast as it is at once caressing and lilting yet powerful and concentrated, all wrapped in a dusty finish where a refreshing salinity arises. This is gorgeous. WA 93-95 (2/2020): Dramatic and enveloping, the 2018 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes soars from the glass with an expressive bouquet of raspberries, cherries and plums mingled with candied peel, sweet soil tones and raw cocoa. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and textural, it's rich and concentrated while remaining lively and beautifully defined, concluding with a long and rose-inflected finish |

BH 94 (1/2012): (from a .85 ha parcel). This is also exceptionally fresh and bright with relatively deeply pitched aromas of primarily red and blue pinot fruit that are in keeping with the rich and intensely mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors that possess excellent depth of material on the firm, long and gorgeously balanced finish. This is terrific juice though note that patience is part of the price of entry. A knockout. Drink 2019+. Outstanding! WA 94 (4/2012): The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras is loaded with class and energy. There is tremendous energy in the glass as layers of dark cherries, mint, graphite, crushed rocks, spices and licorice gain volume and breath through the mid-palate and finish. I very much like the intensity and focus here. The Cras is going to need at least another few years in bottle, but it is shaping up to be truly stellar. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029. VM 93+ (4/2012): Good medium red. Aromas of musky raspberry, coffee and earth, with a note of sappy cherry emerging with air. Large-scaled and silky in texture but utterly unevolved today, coming across as dry and uncompromising. This youthfully imploded wine is distinctly linear today and will need extended aging to ripen in the bottle. Strong mineral and menthol notes carry through to the long aftertaste. An austere 2009 with substantial dusty tannins, but built for long life. |

VM 92+ (4/2014): (12.6% after chaptalization): Medium red. Dark berries, licorice and a peppery note on the nose. Concentrated and youthfully tight, with a distinctly pungent quality to its pomegranate flavor. Has power and thrust for a moderately ripe wine. Best today on the juicy finish, which mounts slowly and builds well. This needs at least six or seven years of cellaring. BH 92 (1/2014): (From a .85 ha parcel). A relatively high-toned nose of sour cherry, raspberry, wet stone and hints of underbrush lead to cool, pure and impressively precise flavors that ooze a fine minerality on the delicious and stylish finish. This is a powerful but classy wine with plenty of concentration though note that this will likely need at least 6 years to be approachable and fully 9 to 12 to realize its full potential. Drink 2021+. Outstanding! |

| VM 92 (11/2022): The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru is missing some vigour on the nose compared to its peers, pretty dark berry fruit laced with brown spices, yet lacking some vigour and verve. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, quite structured and Morey-like with touches of graphite towards the finish. This is a little "serious" at the moment and maybe just lacks a bit of persistence, but age should see some melioration. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting. (Drink between 2025-2045). | BH 92 (1/2012): (From a .26 ha parcel of 70+ year old vines.) An intensely floral nose with perfumed and pure aromas of red pinot fruit gives way to textured, precise, intense and quite serious flavors that are again built on a base of firm minerality, all wrapped in a dusty, intense and mouth coating finish. This does evidence a touch of austerity but there is so much sap that buffers the structure that it stops well short of being severe. I especially like the impeccable sense of balance as well as the fact that this is very fresh for the vintage. Drink 2017+. Outstanding! |

VM 95+ (3/2015): Full medium red. Cool, aristocratic aromas of cherry, pepper, espresso and medicinal herbs complicated by notes of game, smoky minerals and crushed stone. Utterly seamless on the palate, showing an exotic fruit quality to the perfumed flavors of red berries and flowers. Boasts wonderful energy for 2012: this really glistens on the palate and on the rising back end. A wine of great definition and grip, finishing with noble, smooth tannins and superb sappy length. VM 94-96 (1/2014): A wine of endless layers of flavor, the 2012 Chambertin Clos de Bèze, wraps around the palate with gorgeous depth and pure texture. Sweet tobacco, wild flowers, new leather and succulent red cherries all blossom on the close. The inclusion of 50% whole clusters gives the Bèze gorgeous aromatic lift that works as a counterpoint to some of the richer flavors. An exotic melange of blue and black-toned fruit, violets, spices and menthol all blossom on the finish. I very much like the intensity here. BH 91-94 (4/2014): There is plenty of floral character to the markedly spicy mix of very fresh red berry fruit liqueur aromas that are trimmed in a background application of oak. The cool, pure and restrained middle weight flavors exude a fine minerality that adds lift to the delicious, round and impressively long finish. I like the underlying material and while this is a good deal less complex than several wines in the range, my score offers the benefit of the doubt. Drink 2024+. WA 91-93 (12/2013): The 2012 Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru has a perfumed, floral bouquet with scents of black cherries, creme de cassis and minerals that is very attractive, even at this primal stage. The palate is medium-bodied with a firm, introspective opening and henceforth it never really goes out to entertain: broody and saturnine, piqued that it is being viewed so prematurely. Like the Mazis-Chambertin, it needs just a little more warmth of personality to filter through and indeed, returning to my sample after just three of four minutes aeration, there are some interesting spicy notes surfacing towards the finish. Give this grand cru five or six years in bottle. |

| BH 90-93 (1/2011): ( from both Charmes and Mazoyères.) A very ripe nose speaks of mocha, coffee and blueberry liqueur that is followed by rich, intense and dense flavors that possess excellent power and weight as well as a textured mouth feel, particularly on the remarkably persistent finish. This is well made and balanced though I confess that it's riper than I personally prefer. Drink 2021+. |

| BH 92-94 (1/2016): ( from both Charmes and Mazoyères.) Here the wood treatment is less pronounced on the very pretty red berry aromas that are cut with hints of spice, underbrush and an interesting smoked meat nuance. Like many of the wines in the range the medium-bodied flavors possess a really lovely mouth feel that continues onto the refined yet entirely serious finale that delivers outstanding persistence. I very much like the sensation of power without weight that this possesses in spades. Drink 2026+. |

| BH 91-93 (1/2016): Moderate wood is in evidence on the distinctly earthier and more sauvage dark currant, underbrush and humus suffused aromas. There is more size, weight, power and richness though not more refinement or complexity to the broad-shouldered flavors that are shaped by slightly firmer tannins on the beautifully long and well-balanced backend. This is really quite good and should drink well both young and with a decade of age. Drink 2024+. Outstanding! |

| BH 93-95 (1/2016): (from Mazis Hauts and Bas and includes more than just domaine fruit in the blend.) Generous wood fights a bit with the otherwise brooding and reserved nose that is classic Mazis with its intense sauvage character that adds distinction to the dark currant earth, floral and humus scents. There is exceptionally good richness and power to the concentrated and palate staining flavors that deliver superb length on the balanced finish. I very much like the way the intensity builds on the mid-palate back to the explosive finish that really fans out. In a word, impressive. Drink 2029+. Don't miss! |

| BH 90-93 (1/2023): Here too there is a touch of green tea character present on the spicy and overtly floral nose of essence of red berries, all of which is trimmed in an almost invisible application of wood. The super-sleek medium-bodied flavors possess a satiny texture along with the hallmark minerality of a classic Arvelets, all wrapped in slightly less austere, balanced and sappy finale. This too could use more depth, but everything is in place for it to develop in time. |

| BH 92-94 (1/2024): A more elegant and markedly spicier nose freely reveals its overtly floral aromas of the essence of red pinot fruit and plum scents. The sleek, vibrant and beautifully textured middleweight flavors flash an almost pungent minerality on the complex, balanced and strikingly long finale. It's often qualitatively close between the Amoureuses and BM but in 2022, the Amoureuses is clearly the better of the two wines. We will see in time as the Bertheau BM always ages extremely well but at present, this is the more interesting wine. Drink 2030+. |

| BH 91 (4/2015): Positively stunning aromatics are composed of classic Chambolle aromas of spice, flowers and various red berry fruit scents. The beguilingly textured and well-detailed medium-bodied flavors possess a silky mouth feel, all wrapped in a solidly persistent and impeccably well-balanced finish. This is not more than moderately ripe but it avoids auterity plus there is so much energy that one just really feels like drinking it. While this could certainly be profitably held for another 3 to 5 years to develop a bit more depth, it could easily be enjoyed young. Try from 2018+. |

| BH 91-93 (4/2007): (from 20 year old vines.) In contrast to the expressiveness of the prior wines, this was sufficiently reduced to render the nose difficult to read though predictably, the flavors were bigger and much more robust with impressive balance between the firm tannins, mid-palate sap and acid spine. I slightly prefer the purity of the Taillepieds but both are packed with development potential. Drink 2015+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

| |
WA 90 (6/2007): Cumin, wood smoke, black tea, roasted meats, and lightly-cooked blackberry scent the 2005 Vosne-Romanee Le Reas. Dense, substantial and meaty, with a faint tannic grit (all factors seeming to reflect its relative proximity to Nuits-St.-Georges), this displays outstanding depth of fruit, a lot of sheer energy, and persistently subtle complexity. It would probably show fascinatingly in 5-7 years. BH 90-92 (1/2007): In contrast to the expressiveness that borders on exuberance of the first few wines, here the nose is relatively discreet and reserved with Asian spice notes adding nuance and depth to the upper register black fruit and violet aromas that complement to perfection the wonderfully complex, spicy and refined flavors that possess excellent power and striking length. This is a flat out gorgeous villages wine and it displays the class and grace of a fine 1er. Recommended. Drink 2013+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

| BH 89-92 (1/2007): (from an obscure 1.3 ha vineyard that is rarely listed on most maps of the commune and is situated directly behind the Domaine sandwiched between La Colombière and Bossières; Bizot owns .7 ha.) A mild touch of reduction detracts only mildly from the earthy dark berry fruit nose that also offers a subtle floral note but in the mouth this is more elegant and refined than the Vieilles Vignes with solidly structured flavors that sport a subtle minerality and a linear, indeed almost strict finish. This will round out however as the material is seriously impressive. Drink 2013+. Outstanding Top Value! |

| BH 93 (1/2008): Wonderfully spicy upper register black and blue fruit aromas complement the impressively concentrated and powerful mouth coating flavors blessed with ample amounts of dry extract and simply huge length. | BH 95 (4/2019): (from Chambolle fruit.) Here too the nose is quite restrained with its admirably pure aromas of red cherry, dark currant, spice and earth along with notes of violet and lavender. I very much like the sense of underlying tension to the succulent, indeed even juicy, medium weight plus flavors that exude a subtle salinity on the tautly muscular and firm finish that flashes just a hint of youthful austerity. This isn't quite as complex as the Chambertin but it's close and it may well close the gap over time as this is also very clearly structured for mid to even longer-term keeping. Drink 2035+. |

BH 95 (4/2020): (from Chambolle fruit.) Here the reserved nose is ripe yet cool with its layered combination of both red and dark berry fruit aromas that are also quite spicy. There is a bit less density to the middle weight flavors that compensate by being sleeker and more well-delineated on the beautifully textured, dusty, powerful and very serious finale. This is unapologetically built-to-age and a wine that's going to need at least a decade first. Drink 2035+. WA 95+ (1/2020): Another of the highlights of the range is the 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, a striking wine that soars from the glass with notes of raspberries, red berries, rose petals, sweet spices, violets and forest floor. On the palate, it's full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with striking cut and definition, concluding with a long, mineral finish. This is an exquisitely refined Bonnes-Mares that is worth a special effort to seek out. |

| BH 95 (4/2021): (from Chambolle fruit). This too is quite aromatically cool and restrained with its combination of essence of red currant, cherry, lavender, soft spice elements and admirably subtle wood. The juicy and impressively concentrated flavors flash excellent intensity and focused power while displaying the same gorgeous texture as the Echezeaux, all wrapped in a hugely long, serious and impeccably well-balanced finale. This is beautifully refined, indeed while it may seem like an oxymoron given Bonnes Mares’ well-deserved reputation for power and muscle, this is more a wine of finesse. Even so, this should have no trouble aging and improving for close to 20 years. Drink 2036+. |

| VM 93-95 (1/2018): (just 20 hectoliters per hectare produced; 50% new oak): Medium bright red. Denser, darker and more serious on the nose than the other Volnay premier crus at this address, offering mineral-driven scents of black cherry, spices and licorice. Wonderfully elegant and fine-grained, combining Outstanding volume and an impression of finesse and weightlessness. Conveys a small-berry concentration and near-perfect balance, finishing with refined tannins and terrific length and lift. This stunning Volnay is wonderfully approachable today but I suspect it will shut down a bit by the time it's bottled and benefit from five to eight years of cellaring. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 91 (4/2013): (from 25+ year old vines). A deft touch of wood sets off the notably ripe mix of cassis and various dark berries that elegantly introduces the cool, pure and energetic flavors that seemed fashioned from nothing but silk and satin, all wrapped in a delicate, refined and beautifully balanced finish. This is a classic Chevret of matchless finesse. Drink 2018+. VM 91-93 (2/2013): Bright red-ruby. Rather brooding aromas of cassis, blackberry, smoke and licorice are pure and discreet. Surprisingly rich on entry, then lush and seamless in the middle, but with very good acidity framing and lifting the black fruit and game flavors. The powerful, rising finish features building tannins and a distinct thick-skinned character. The old vines in Boillot's parcel were strongly affected by millerandage, which largely explains this wine's extra measure of texture and concentration. Boillot noted that his 2011s generally have 3.8 to 4 grams per liter of acidity following the malos, which is quite healthy for the vintage. |

| BH 91 (4/2019): (from 25+ year old vines). An elegant, airy and cool nose is also attractively perfumed and is composed of essence of red cherry, lavender and soft spice aromas. The elegant, even lilting middle weight flavors evidence notably more minerality on the wonderfully textured, refined and well-balanced finale. This is a lovely Chevrets fashioned in a style that should permit reasonably early accessibility. Drink 2023+. |

| BH 92 (4/2021): (from 25+ year old vines). A markedly more floral nose slowly reveals its aromas of cool and very pure red currant and spiced plum scents. The medium-bodied flavors possess a simply gorgeous mouthfeel along with fine detail before concluding in a mineral-driven and youthfully austere finale. This is firm enough to reward up to a decade of cellaring yet not so firm as to be unapproachable young if desired. Drink 2027+. |

VM 90-92 (1/2015): Bright, dark red. Reticent, rather wild aromas of dark cherry and underbrush. Energetic but backward; much tighter today than the village wine and more dominated by its structure. The wild quality carries through on the palate. Best today on the back end, where fine-grained tannins spread out to saturate the palate. WA 88-90 (12/2014): The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiets comes from a single parcel of vines. The nose is well defined, dominated by the new oak at the moment, but there is sufficient fruit underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins, quite dense at the moment with a touch of bell pepper on the masculine finish. Fine - if just a bit predictable. BH 88 (4/2015): Here too there are discreet floral nuances to the pretty red and dark currant scents that are liberally laced with earth and sandalwood nuances. There is a bit more volume to the medium-bodied flavors that retain a lovely sense of detail on the energetic, dusty and mildly austere finish though in this case there is just a hint of dryness that detracts slightly from the overall sense of balance and harmony. Drink 2020+. |

| BH 91 (4/2019): A more deeply pitched nose reveals notes of dark cherry, plum and raspberry along with pretty spice and violet wisps. WA 93 (1/2020): The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiets exhibits lovely aromas of raspberries and cherries mingled with orange rind, spice and raw cocoa. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, lively and fine-boned, from more calcium-rich soils than Les Chevrets and built around bright acids and fine, chalky tannins. BH 91 (4/2020): A restrained if clearly ripe nose is comprised by notes of cassis, black cherry, violet and pretty rose petal hints. The sleeker and more refined is perhaps not quite as concentrated flavors also possess a seductive texture and even more minerality, all wrapped in a mildly warm and youthfully austere finale that is slightly firmer. This too is lovely. Drink 2028+. Outstanding! |

BH 93 (4/2024): This is also aromatically ripe but fresh with its array of violet, lilac, dark currant and poached plum scents. There is excellent volume to the slightly more concentrated middleweight flavors that flash evident minerality on the impressively complex, persistent, firm and balanced finale. This is excellent and a wine that should drink reasonably well young if you lack patience! Drink 2032+. Outstanding! VM 92-94 (1/2024): The 2022 Volnay Les Fremiets 1er Cru presents a dark, almost somber expression of Volnay. Blue/purplish fruit, new leather, licorice and lavender infuse the 2022 with striking complexity and dimension. Gravel, dried flowers and dark spice add lovely complexity to this decidedly virile, imposing Volnay. The tannins need time to soften, but there’s plenty of fruit. Neal Martin. |

| BH 90 (4/2021): There is noticeable volatile acidity to the overtly spicy melange of red berries and subtly exotic nuances. The sleeker and more intense big-bodied flavors possess excellent delineation that carries over to the naturally sweet, mineral laden and sneaky long finish. This needs to add depth though the underlying material very much appears to be present for that to occur. As I have observed many times in these pages, volatile acidity is something that all wines have, it’s the degree that matters and whether the nose would bother most people is hard to judge but it did me. BH 94 (4/2024): An exuberantly spicy and quite floral-suffused nose features notes of wild currant, cherry and a gamy hint. The super-sleek and even finer yet more powerful larger-bodied flavors display impressive power on the even more complex, balanced and highly persistent finale. This is a big wine yet the balance is such that it could be approached after only 5 to 7 years. Drink 2034+. VM 93-95+ (1/2024): The 2022 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is an imposing young wine. A blast of blue fruit, lavender, licorice, gravel, crushed rock and menthol saturates the palate. This bruiser is going to need time to be at its best, but it is pretty impressive, even in the early going. Neal Martin. |

BH 93 (4/2011): (from a ~.34 ha parcel in Grand Maupertuis). A very ripe nose offers up notes of plum, black pinot fruit, pungent earth and plenty of spice influence. There is a relatively refined mouth feel to the medium weight yet powerful flavors that possess Outstanding power and punch on the long, balanced and only moderately austere finish. This will need plenty of cellar time but should very much be worth the wait. Drink 2023+. VM 92-94 (2/2013): (from the Grand Maupertuis section of Clos-Vougeot, close to Grands-Echezeaux): Bright red-ruby. Wild aromas of black cherry, earth, pepper and flowers. BH 93 (4/2016): (from a <.34 ha parcel in Grand Maupertuis.) A ripe but restrained nose features notes of both red and dark berry fruit, earth, humus, smoke and exotic tea scents along with a background hint of oak toast. There is impressive volume to the well-muscled and broad-shouldered flavors that possess plenty of underlying tension, all wrapped in a complex, rustic and lingering finish that is less austere than usual. This beauty will require at least a decade to be at its best. Drink 2024+. VM 90-93 (1/2016): (aged in 75% new oak, but Boillot used 350-liter barrels to get more freshness): Healthy dark red. Reticent aromas of black cherry, chocolate, menthol and herbs are less fruity today than the Volnays here. Large-scaled, round and sweet, showing more complex, soil-driven salinity than easy fruit in the early going. Powerful material here. Finishes saline, ripely tannic and long. This wine may need a solid eight years in the cellar to approach maturity. |

| VM 91-93 (1/2017): (100% vendange entier; the Boillots work these vines in Grand Maupertuis themselves): Saturated deep red. Aromas of black cherry, licorice and rose petal communicate striking fruity lift for young Clos Vougeot. Very rich, sappy and deep, but but with no sign of overripeness and markedly different in style from the Côte de Beaune samples that preceded it in my tasting, partly due to its whole-cluster treatment. This distinctly fine-grained Clos Vougeot has clearly benefited from the weather conditions of 2015. Stephen Tanzer. |
