VM 92 (5/2019): The 2000 Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epéneaux has a well defined bouquet with raspberry, crushed strawberry, undergrowth and bay leaf scents. I appreciate the discreet manner in which it gains intensity with aeration, repaying those with the nous to decant this wine. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin: a well proportioned Clos des Epéneaux with a dash of spice enlivening the finish. Returning to the 2001, there is a completeness to the 2000, I find that it has matured better. Tasted at Sarah Marsh’s 2000 and 2001 horizontal tasting. (Drink between 2018-2028). Neal Martin. BH 88 (9/2008): Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru Red) Here the moderately ripe nose is composed of mostly primary red berry fruit though there are notes of initial secondary development as well as subtle earth and underbrush that are followed by rich, round and serious flavors that display very good length supported by slightly austere finishing tannins that are ever-so-slightly drying. While clearly a very good effort, this is by no means exceptional by the standards of this wine. WA 85 (2/2018): The 2000 Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux dates from a different epoch in the domaine's history, and it's a far cry from the graceful, elegantly intense wines being made at the domaine today. Notes of red-black fruit mingle with the strong signature of cedary, minty new oak, introducing a wine which is simultaneously austere and open-knit, carrying too much tannin from extraction and new oak for its own good. |

| WA 91 (6/2003): Medium to dark ruby-colored and offering lively red fruit scents, the 2000 Echezeaux is a supple, suave medium-bodied effort. Plump, sultry, yet well-balanced, it coats the mouth with copious layers of satiny cherries. Projected maturity: now-2012. |

| BH 91-94 (1/2002): The hallmark of this wine is its superb balance as everything is in perfect harmony. This is fantastically spicy yet pure and is bigger and more powerful than the Romanee St. Vivant and for young Richebourg is really quite refined. This so fine that the volume of wine behind the flavors almost goes unnoticed. An extremely impressive effort for the vintage. Don't miss! Drink 2007-15. |

| BH 88 (4/2014): A highly aromatic and beautifully complex nose features discreet but not invisible oak influence along with lovely floral hints to the fresh, ripe and mature dark berry fruit and earth suffused aromas. There is good richness and detail to the lightly mineral-driven middle weight flavors that possess a fine sense of energy but not the depth or sophistication displayed on the nose, all wrapped in a solidly long finish. This is one of those wines that has a truly distinguished nose but an average plus amount of depth and length so some may like this more than I do. To be sure, this is a very pretty wine but it's not special in the context of what Leroy typically does with it. In terms of drinkability for my taste this has reached its peak though it should be capable of holding at this plateau for another decade. Drink now+. |

BH 93 (11/2005): The phenomenal aromatic complexity displayed by this wine from cask is still present with relatively tight but not hard frank, direct and robust flavors that have plenty of buffering fat and superb length. As I noted in my original tasting note, this will not compete for the longest lived Rousseau Chambertin yet it is packed, powerful and beautifully complex and is an Outstanding wine in any context but particularly so for the vintage. Because there is so much fat, this can be enjoyed now but will clearly offer more fireworks in the future so I would be inclined to let this baby rest for at least another 5 years and longer if you can keep your hands off of it. Drink: Try from 2012+ VM 92+ (4/2003): Good medium red. Cooler, more aristocratic nose than the Clos de Beze: blackberry, violet, minerals. Supple and suave but quite pure and sharply focused, with a degree of precision rare for the vintage. Finishes with terrific grip. Like the Clos Saint-Jacques and Clos de Beze, this may well ultimately merit a higher score. |
