WA 99 (8/2014): The 2010 Cote Rotie Chateau d’Ampuis is an off-the-hook effort that easily competes with the more expensive single-vineyard releases. Seamless, gorgeously pure and seriously concentrated and full-bodied, it’s an insanely gorgeous Syrah offers layers of creme de cassis, vanilla bean, creamy licorice and smoked meat aromas and flavors. Still a baby, it needs to be forgotten for 4-5 years, at which point it should offer another two decades or more of longevity. Don’t miss this beauty! WS 97 (10/2014): Rock-solid, offering dark currant and blackberry paste flavors that race along, thanks to well-embedded graphite and charcoal notes. The finish lets warm fruitcake, plum skin and singed juniper details fill in, with plenty of grip. Mouthwatering acidity and a long echo of sweet tapenade keep this racy and defined. Best from 2015 through 2035. 2,200 cases made. VM 94 (4/2014): Opaque purple. Higher-pitched and more red-fruity than the hefty 2009, displaying scents of black raspberry, fresh flowers, Asian spices and smoky minerals. Juicy, sharply focused red and dark berry flavors become deeper and sweeter with air, picking up a suave spicecake quality. Closes silky, incisive and extremely long, with fine-grained tannins adding gentle grip. |

WA 100 (10/2012): No such issue exists with the perfect 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin. I don't know what more a wine could offer. Inky blue/purple, with an extraordinary nose of smoked duck, grilled steaks, Provencal herbs, blackberries, blueberries, kirsch, licorice and truffle, enormously massive, concentrated, full-bodied and built for 30-50 years of cellaring, this wine, which is dominated by its Mourvedre component, is a tour de force, a spectacular, world-class wine. It is going to require some patience, though, and seems to need 4-5 years of cellaring. It should again be almost ageless in its potential. VM 95-97 (2/2012): (roughly 60% mourvedre, 20% syrah and 10% each of grenache and counoise at this stage): Vivid purple. Highly perfumed bouquet combines blackcurrant, pipe tobacco, woodsmoke, Asian spices and dried flowers. Wonderfully sweet and pure, with a seamless texture and terrific energy to its red and dark fruit preserve flavors. Palate-staining and powerful wine but without any undue impression of weight. The long, spicy finish shows an exotic quality that reminded me of, forgive me, a Rousseau Chambertin-Clos de Beze from a ripe vintage. |

WA 94 (10/2012): The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Tradition was even better than when I tasted it last year prior to bottling. A wine of great intensity, it may be the finest Tradition cuvee yet made at Bosquet des Papes. Its opaque purple color is accompanied by sumptuous notes of balsam wood, roasted Provencal herbs/garrigue, sweet black raspberry and blackberry fruit and hints of truffles and lavender. This dense, full-bodied, amazing Chateauneuf is one of the top values of the vintage. Enjoy it over the next 15-20 years. WS 93 (10/2012): A broad, gutsy style, with bittersweet cocoa and Turkish coffee notes leading the way for an immense yet still tightly wound core of blackberry, fig paste and steeped black currant fruit. The tar-coated finish has heft, but also serious cut. Best from 2014 through 2028. 3,000 cases made. JD 92+ (9/2012): As with the 2011, the 2010 Bosquet des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a very well done, traditional effort that reveals fantastic southern Rhône typicity. Garrigue, roasted meats, pepper, and spice give way to a medium to full-bodied Châteauneuf-du-Pape that has a core of sweet red and black fruits, beautiful purity, and serious, age-worthy structure. Give bottles 3-4 years in the cellar, and then enjoy over the following decade or longer. VM 91 (1/2013): (mostly grenache, with mourvedre, syrah and cinsault): Saturated ruby. Blackberry, cherry and lavender on the intensely perfumed, spicy nose and in the mouth. Deep and expansive, with impressive back-end punch and slow-building smokiness. The spice and floral notes carry through a long, sweet, gently tannic finish. Decant this one if you can't resist opening a bottle now. Josh Raynolds. |

| WA 91 (10/2012): The 2010 Gigondas La Font du Tonin (400 cases produced) comes from the estate’s oldest vines and is a blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvedre. It possesses fuller body along with striking concentration, an enticing texture, and lots of black raspberry and blueberry fruit intermixed with a floral character as well as a crushed stone minerality. This pure, intense, natural tasting Gigondas should evolve effortlessly for 10-12 years. |

| WA 95 (10/2016): Another sensational wine is the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes. Coming all from the famed la Crau lieu-dit, its notes of cassis, licorice, mint and crushed rock lead to a full-bodied, structured, tannic, yet concentrated 2010 that still needs 2-3 years of cellaring. |

JD 97 (9/2012): My favorite vintage of this wine to date, the absolutely brilliant 2010 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape exudes class and purity on both the nose and palate. It has knockout aromatics of sweet red and black fruits, lavender, wild herbs, and searing minerality that flow to a full-bodied, powerful, and concentrated 2010 that has awesome density and richness, yet also stays fresh, ethereal, and light on the palate. It’s winner, yet it needs 4-6 years of bottle age to integrate its tannin; It will thrill for over two decades! JLL ***** (12/2011): Dark robe; raspberry-blackberry aroma that gives plenty of fruit, nicely sweet fruit, on display with some darker, licorice-style notes in the backdrop. There is a “murmur" of herbs, lovely floral drifts. The palate commences well - an engaging mix of plump fruit and clear, fresh movement. It is all very consecutive - there is enjoyable drinking in prospect. An STGT style of Châteauneuf, one that has plenty of juice and length. It has harmony and balance in abundance. It is a softly-softly wine, very good. It is long, and finishes on a pocket of late pepper. From mid-2013. WA 95+ (10/2012): More backward and concentrated, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape exhibits a dark ruby/purple color as well as dense, black raspberry, black currant, garrigue, licorice and lavender characteristics. Full-bodied with undeniable elegance, minerality and precision, it needs 2-3 years of cellaring and should keep well for 15-20. VM 95 (2/2013): Bright purple. Heady red and dark berry preserve and floral aromas, with bright spice and mineral nuances adding vivacity. Concentrated but impressively energetic, offering sappy black raspberry and blueberry flavors that are firmed by zesty minerality. Smoothly plays richness off finesse, finishing on a resonating note of candied flowers. WS 95 (12/2013): A juicy and brambly style, with thick plum skin, raspberry and blackberry fruit at the core, lined with toasted spice, roasted apple wood and dark licorice snap notes. The dark fruit is offset nicely by a perfumy black tea note, and the finish is lined with a fine minerality, with nice grip for balance overall. There's lots of range to this, and it should age beautifully. Best from 2015 through 2030. 500 cases imported. |

WA 100 (12/2012): The uber-impressive 2010 Hermitage Les Bessards ranks alongside the perfect 2009. The strikingly intense powdered stone/granite minerality is apparent in this wine of great intensity, prodigious, almost skyscraper-like texture, massive body and high tannins. It is only for true connoisseurs who have a cold cellar as well as the patience to wait a minimum of a decade for it to round into drinking form. Filled with potential, it is one of the single greatest Hermitages I have ever tasted. There is no hint of its 100% new oak aging! JLL ****** (11/2012): Dark rumble of red in a dark-tinted robe. The nose is centred around a copious, but well manageable beef stock aroma, shows pepper, Bovril stock, fluid liqueur black fruit, suggests many layers before you reach its heart. Has gras in abundance, offers raspberry, black cherry, oak in the second rank. The palate spreads its gras richness with precise reach; it is all wrapped together, is well-balanced. It has a shade more coating then the regular Domaine des Tourettes 2010. This is Limousine Service Hermitage steered by a chauffeur with a tang in his accent and his hat at a tilt. Grainy tannins and oily berry combine at the end. It is mighty on its freshness and poise. This is an intellectual vintage - not an open book. “It is so pure and refined, so dense and tightly packed - will people understand this?", Claire Darnaud, winemaker. WS 96 (11/2013): Dark and inviting, with lots of braised plum, fig paste, warm black currant confiture, freshly brewed espresso and baker's chocolate notes wound together and held in check for now by hefty grip. An echo of iron on the finish keeps this grounded. Should unwind slowly, maintaining a serious bass line. Best from 2015 through 2030. 150 cases imported. VM 95 (4/2013): Bright purple. Black and blue fruits, incense and candied violet on the heady, intensely perfumed nose. Sappy, penetrating and pure, its deep black raspberry and blueberry flavors lifted by juicy acidity. Stains the palate and shows uncanny precision for its power. Closes sweet and very long, with youthful tannins and resonating spice and floral pastille notes. |

WA 95 (10/2012): Another blockbuster is the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Origines. A blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 20% Mourvedre (45- to-95-year-old vines) aged in small oak, it exhibits an opaque purple color as well as a sweet bouquet of blackberries, espresso roast, ink and graphite. While clearly a modern-styled Chateauneuf du Pape, it retains plenty of the region's typicity and authenticity. It should drink well for 15+ years. JLL **** (12/2011): Very dark robe; has a broad, rippling bouquet, a serene spread of sweet-noted black berry - the nose gives a curvy, full start to the wine. The palate has an ample black fruit soaking with oak that seems new on the outside (tasted blind). Comes in an assertive style, has a lot of black fruit intensity, and seems geared for a market such as the USA. It is very much on its oak for now which is mixed up with a rich sweetness. More local, more together from 2015-16. VM 93 (2/2013): Inky purple. Ripe cherry and dark berry aromas are complicated by notes of spicecake and potpourri. Fleshy and expansive, offering sweet cherry-vanilla and blueberry flavors lifted by juicy acidity. Smooth, harmonious tannins lend shape to an impressively long finish, with lingering notes of floral pastilles and Asian spices. WS 92 (7/2012): Racy, offering delicious dark bramble, linzer torte and blackberry notes, with a strong graphite edge coursing through the finish. Gains density and flesh on the finish, which bodes well for the cellar. A modern style, but shows solid grounding in its terroir. Best from 2014 through 2022. 8,000 cases made. |

WA 100 (10/2012): A monumental effort meriting a perfect score, the super-rich 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is a 4,000-bottle blend of 50% Grenache, 40% Mourvedre and 10% Syrah from 55- to 105-year-old vines and was aged for 18 months in small oak. The wine offers majestic blackberry and cassis fruit intermixed with kirsch, licorice and subtle Provencal herbs in the background. It is akin to chewing meat in the mouth given its viscosity and thickness. This utterly amazing wine comes close to being over the top, but it pulls back just in time. A massive Chateauneuf du Pape (even for a 2010), it needs 5-6 years of cellaring and should age effortlessly for 25-30 years. Bravo! JD 98+ (9/2012): Always the largest scaled and most powerful of the lineup, the 2010 Domaine Grand Veneur Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes is a blend of 50% Grenache, 40% Mourvedre, and 10% Syrah that saw 18 months in new oak. It is incredibly rich and layered, with thrilling aromas of blackberry liqueur, toasted bread, spice-box, and hints of garrigue all emerging from the glass. Full-bodied, powerful, and dense, yet also laser like focused and pure, this blockbuster wine needs to be hidden in the cellar for 5-7 years, and it will have over two decades of longevity! As I said in the prior barrel review, hats off to the Jaume family for this brilliant wine! VM 95 (2/2013): Opaque purple. Deeply pitched aromas of dark berry liqueur, cherry-cola, lavender and vanilla, with a spicy topnote. Fleshy, palate-staining blueberry and cassis flavors are lifted by juicy acidity and pick up a smoky quality with air. Supple and expansive on the endless finish, which strongly echoes the dark fruit and vanilla notes. WS 93 (7/2012): Ripe and packed, but well-focused, with a broad beam of linzer torte and boysenberry fruit backed by graphite, violet and pastis notes. Picks up plenty of muscle and toasted spice on the finish, showing lots of latent depth in reserve. Very solid. Best from 2014 through 2024. 250 cases made. |

WA 100 (12/2014): As with the other two single-parcel Cote Roties, the 2010 Cote Rotie La Landonne is pure perfection in a glass. An incredibly massive, muscular, full-bodied effort, it has an insane amount of structure to go with an equal amount of concentrated fruit. Cassis, smoked bacon, coffee bean, cracked pepper and liquid rock-like qualities are all present here, and it hits the palate with a chiseled, focused textured, building tannin and terrific length. It’s the most backward of the 2010s and will require a decade of cellaring, but will keep for about as long as you’d like to hold onto bottles. JLL ****** (12/2011): Very dark; the nose is widespread, impressive, bears a silky ripeness, lots of abundant black fruit - there is a really solid depth to it. This has a striking palate - it dashes along with juiced black fruits, its tannins giving it energy. The crunchy fruit fines down as it goes, then resurfaces with a little ball of joy at the end. Silken, very long indeed. There are a lot of tannins, but they are largely well founded. It is ripe, and there are black olive, tapenade hints of the south in it. From 2019-20, wait. My preferred wine of Landonne, Turque, Mouline 2009 and 2010. WS 99 (10/2014): Terrifically dense, with tightly coiled flavors of warm ganache, fig paste and blackberry confiture. Shows plenty of range as well, with well-embedded notes of bay leaf, chestnut, juniper, black tea and charcoal. This is intensely grippy through the lengthy, fine-grained finish. Should age marvelously and slowly. Best from 2017 through 2040. 600 cases made. VM 96+ (2/2015): Glass-staining ruby. Potent smoke- and spice-accented black and blue fruit aromas are complicated by sexy potpourri and incense nuances that build with aeration. Sweet, penetrating blackberry and cherry liqueur flavors stain the palate, with licorice pastille and violet qualities coming in slowly. Rich yet lively and precise, finishing with Outstanding energy and chewy tannins that frame the wine's lush, alluringly sweet fruit. |

WA 100 (12/2014): As to three single parcel releases, I reviewed the 2010 Cote Rotie La Mouline earlier this year, but was more than happy to taste it again (lucky me) for this report. Incorporating a full 11% of Viognier and coming from the steep, terraced vines in the Cote Blonde lieu-dit, it sports a heavenly bouquet of spring flowers, incense, violets, cured meats and sweet cassis. Full-bodied, voluptuous and as seamless as they come, Syrah just doesn’t get any more alluring, sexy or impressive. Give it 5-6 years and drink bottles over the following 2 decades or more. JLL ****** (12/2011): (Cask, last racked 9 Dec 2010, 370 days ago) very dark; lovely, firmly scented nose that offers a greatly refined black cherry air. It has fine oak and shows some licorice. There are waves of fine black cherry along the palate; this is a wine of serious heart, and as it goes it takes on a firm side. The tannins are extremely fine, with small grains all locked together. Stylish, well balanced wine. “It is a serious year, with a lot of droiteur - straight, direct features - and is reserved. I am happy my twin sons were born in 2010, since the wines will live well for them. This could be racked - it will be helped by oxygen to get the seductive side of La Mouline," Philippe Guigal. WS 99 (10/2014): This smolders from the start, with Turkish coffee and warm ganache notes out front, backed by steeped currant, warmed fig and Black Forest cake flavors. The well-structured finish is layered with charcoal and mesquite notes, revealing bay leaf and chestnut details in the background. Offers terrific density, cut and range. Drapes like velvet despite the heft and structure. Best from 2017 through 2040. 400 cases made. VM 97 (2/2015): Saturated ruby. An explosive, sharply delineated bouquet evokes fresh red and dark berries, Asian spices, candied flowers and incense, all lifted by a bright mineral overlay. Silky, sweet and utterly seamless on the palate, offering vibrant raspberry, violet pastille and spicecake flavors that spread out and gain depth with air. Manages to be both powerful and lithe, with superb back-end thrust and silky tannins shaping the endless floral finish. A drop-dead gorgeous, graceful and impeccably balanced example of Côte-Rôtie and one of the great wines of a truly great vintage. My daughter might have to skip a year of college so that I can buy a dozen cases of this; she'll understand when she grows up and has kids of her own. |

WA 100 (12/2014): On this showing, the 2010 La Turque was incredible, in a lineup of incredible wines. Offering off-the-chart notes of cassis, blackberry, aged beef, chocolate, crushed rock and exotic flowers, it flows onto the palate with a massive, full-bodied feel that carries ultra-fine tannin, awesome depth and a blockbuster finish. Syrah, or wine for that matter, doesn’t get any better. Give this monumental Cote Rotie 5-6 years and enjoy it over the following 2-3 decades. JLL ****** (12/2011): (Cask) very dark; the bouquet is more masculine than that of La Mouline, offers subtle, hidden corners of blackberry and mulberry fruit, minor airs of bacon, and also noted floral, violet airs. The palate starts out very smoothly, runs with superb consistency and a feather-like length - there is never one small moment of pause, it is all very lissom. Its acidity is very fine, the finish harmonious. The tannins are well built in to its fleshy content. The aftertaste shows the firm grip of the tannins. “Today the nose is almost more charming than the Mouline`s - it certainly has tannin, though..." Philippe Guigal. I rate it a dash of a point ahead of La Mouline. WS 99 (10/2014): A stunner, with ganache, warm tobacco leaf, espresso and singed juniper notes leading the way for an immense core of macerated plum, fig and blackberry fruit flavors. The superlong finish cuts a broad swath, presenting smoldering charcoal and iron details. Best from 2017 through 2040. 400 cases made. VM 95 (2/2015): Inky ruby. Heady, seductively perfumed aromas of dark berry liqueur, candied flowers, smoky minerals and olive paste. Sweet, palate-staining blackberry and violet pastille flavors are lifted and sharpened by juicy acidity and a hint of white pepper. Very rich but lively as well, finishing with strong back-end cut. Shows real power on the strikingly long finish, which features fine-grained tannins and sexy floral and Asian spice qualities. |

WA 100 (12/2014): At the risk of sounding like a broken record, the 2010 Hermitage Ex Voto is as good as it gets. Following some of the most concentrated, rich Cote Roties ever made, it still ratcheted up the concentration level with its massive, palate saturating levels of gamey dark fruits, cassis, licorice, chocolate, graphite and powdered rock. It this beauty doesn’t make fireworks go off in your head, I don’t know what will. Full-bodied, deeply concentrated and structured, yet also fine, elegant and delineated, it is nothing short of incredible. Give this awesome Hermitage 5-6 years in the cellar and feel free to drink it anytime over the following 4-5 decades. WS 98 (11/2014): This has lavish range, with intense steeped plum, anise, pain d'epices, singed apple wood and fruitcake notes layered together, framed by smoldering charcoal and sweet tobacco accents and riveted to a tarry spine. Expands like a fractal in the glass to display enormous depth and length. Features mouthwatering cut from start to finish despite the heft. An extremely impressive wine that will need some time to stretch out fully. Best from 2018 through 2040. 600 cases made. |

WA 96+ (12/2012): It should be fascinating to compare the potentially legendary 2010 Hermitage La Chapelle with the prodigious 2009 La Chapelle over the next 30-40 years. About 20% new oak was used, and, as were previous vintages, the 2010 was aged 15 months prior to bottling. This black/purple-colored beauty is revealing more weight and richness than it did last year from barrel, along with great precision, stunning minerality and enormous quantities of blackberry, cassis, beef blood and smoked game intertwined with hints of graphite and acacia flowers. With good acidity and richness as well as abundant, but ripe, well-integrated tannin, this great wine equals the titan produced in 2009. Forget it for 7-10 years and drink it over the following 30-50 years. VM 96 (4/2013): Inky, glass-staining ruby. An exotically perfumed bouquet evokes dark fruit liqueur, smoky Indian spices, potpourri and cracked pepper. Deep but lively, offering palate-coating blueberry and cherry-cola flavors and a sexy note of candied violet. This wine opens up dramatically with a little air and shows a very suave blend of power and finesse. An energizing mineral note comes on strong on the endless finish, which features sexy floral and spicecake nuances. WS 94 (10/2013): Cocoa, raspberry confiture, roasted plum, tobacco and loam notes are nicely layered, backed by an ample but caressing structure. The long, lingering, tobacco leaf-filled finish shows ample depth and an echo of pastis. Best from 2015 through 2030. 2,500 cases imported. |

VM 95-96 (3/2013): Opaque purple. Heady aromas of red and dark berry preserves, potpourri, incense and Asian spices, with a bright mineral accent. Stains the palate with intense black raspberry, blueberry and candied violet flavors and becomes sweeter with air. Rich but lively, with superb finishing clarity, fully integrated tannins and lingering spice and floral notes. This wine's blend of power and finesse is remarkable; it was still in barrel when I tasted it in early November, 2012. JLL ***** (5/2013): Shiny, handsome red robe. Mulberry, brightly scented fruit, Big Bounty here, has an air of cassis jam, deep filling, a subtle licorice note with it. The palate is rolled into a bundle of virile flavour, spreads widely and has real thrust and length. It is “big” in a relative way - copious wine, with no chinks. It gives the 2010 abundance and freshness combined. |

WA 98-100 (10/2011): A potential candidate for perfection is the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Chaupin, which may turn out to eclipse my favorite Chaupin to date, the 2007, and closely behind it, the 2009. Dense blackish/purple, with extraordinary intensity, precision and focus, this wine is very backward due to the higher acids in this vintage, but has a layered, skyscraper-like texture and a stunning nose of kirsch, black raspberries, lavender, and spice box. Some licorice also makes an impression. Enormously concentrated yet relatively delicate and light on its feet for a wine that is probably 15%-plus in alcohol and as concentrated as this is, it should be a future legend of Chateauneuf du Pape and evolve for 20-25 years. JD 96-98+ (9/2011): As with the estates other ’10, the 2010 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Chaupin, tasted out of foudre, shows uncommon purity and freshness. Exhibiting captivating notes of fresh underbrush, flowers, violets, spice, licorice, and wet stone-like minerality that’s supported by perfectly ripe blackberry fruit, the wine is full-bodied and elegant on the palate, possessing thrilling levels of fruit, awesome focus and freshness, and a classically styled, very long finish that highlights ripe tannin. Brilliantly done, this should be a very long lived bottle of wine with a huge drink window. JLL ***** (12/2011): (Barrel) Dark robe. Blackberry and blueberry lead fruit air with sensible filling in the bouquet - this can become varied and stylish. The second fruit air is prune - ie ripeness. Enclosed, compact black fruit on the palate runs clearly, has cut. It persists well. It is reserved in all its youth. The fruit also runs across the palate, is juicy without undue flamboyance. It ends nice and coolly, and is balanced. From late 2014. VM 94-96 (2/2012): (100% grenache): Inky ruby. Explosive, kaleidoscopic bouquet evokes red and dark berry preserves, potpourri, star anise and minerals. Sappy, palate-staining raspberry and blackberry flavors show superb depth and clarity, with exotic floral pastille and fruitcake nuances gaining strength on the back end. Silky tannins appear late on the finish, which lingers with Outstanding persistence and clarity. This was one of the best 2010s that I tasted in November. |

This looks like it will reward patience. Josh Raynolds. |

JD 93 (10/2012): Made from 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 6% Mourvedre, and 4% Cinsault, the knockout 2010 Clos du Mont-Olivet Châteauneuf-du-Pape is significantly richer, and concentrated than the Le Petit Mont and displays great aromatics of stem, pepper, garrigue, leather, and roasted meat-like qualities that flow to a full-bodied, structured, and focused 2010. Beautifully done, with impressive balance, a stacked mid-palate, and admirable length, this beauty should be given 3-5 years of bottle age, and then consumed over the following two decades. Lovers of traditionally made, age-worthy Châteauneuf-du-Pape should have more than a few bottles of this in the cellar. WA 93 (8/2014): Much more serious, and a big, structured effort, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape has loads of minerality, pepper and garrigue to go with a core of blackberry-styled fruit. Possessing plenty of ripe tannin, good mid-palate concentration and superb focus on the finish, it will benefit from short-term cellaring and have over two decades of longevity. |

WA 98 (10/2013): Looking at the 2010s and a brilliant vintage for Laurence, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape offers up classic Pegau aromas and flavors of ripe dark fruits, garrigue, cured meats, tobacco leaf, saddle leather and hints of game. Full-bodied and beautifully concentrated, it offers a seamless, layered profile on the palate with thrilling mid-palate depth, sweet, yet substantial tannin, and a blockbuster finish that stays fresh and beautifully focused. Quite polished by this estates standards, it nevertheless screams southern France and I doubt it’s possible to have too much of this beauty in the cellar. It will absolutely thrill over the coming 2-3 decades. Drink 2016-2030. WS 97 (10/2013): (WS #7 wine of 2013) Intense, with the tarry, bittersweet cocoa-fueled grip of the vintage running through a well-endowed core of crushed plum, blackberry paste and braised fig. The muscular finish picks up notes of brick dust, pepper, warm chestnut leaf and smoldering charcoal. A throwback profile, with a hyperripe core of fruit—and it works. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and others. Best from 2015 through 2035. 6,580 cases made. JD 96-99 (9/2012): More straight and clean, yet with rocking concentration and tannic structure, the 2010 Domaine du Pégaü Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée is a beauty! Scheduled to be bottled later this year, it delivers classic aromas of black fruits, mineral, iron, and wild herb qualities on the nose, and what it lacks (at the moment) in complexity, it more than makes up for with brilliant purity, clear, delineated aromas, and awesome focus and length. This full-bodied, rich, and layered 2010 will handsomely reward cellaring, and drink well for decades. It is one of the most impressive Cuvée Réservées I’ve tasted. VM 94 (2/2013): Deep ruby. An intensely perfumed bouquet evokes dried cherry, cassis, potpourri and smoked meat, with a spicy nuance adding vivacity. Rich but energetic on the palate, offering sweet dark fruit flavors and notes of candied lavender and anise. Chewy tannins add grip to a long, smoky and powerful finish, which leaves a bitter cherry note behind. Definitely built for the long haul; don't touch this wine for at least six or seven years. JD 99 (9/2012): The 2010 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Combe des Fous is an utterly brilliant wine! A blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Cinsault, and 10% Vaccarese, it offers an extraordinary bouquet of spring flowers, sappy garrigue, ground pepper, and searing minerality that is anchored by a core of sweet red and black fruits. More elegant and seamless than the Deus-Ex Machina, it has full-bodied power, layers of texture, and a blockbuster finish that highlights masses of silky tannin. Thrilling stuff and my favorite vintage of the cuvee to date, it deserves 3-4 years of bottle age, and will evolve for 2+ decades. VM 95 (1/2013): (made from 60% grenache and 20% syrah, with cinsault, vaccarese and muscardin): Inky ruby. Heady, spice-accented aromas of dark berry preserves, potpourri and smoky minerals. Stains the palate with intense black raspberry and lavender pastille flavors and becomes spicier with air. Powerful yet lithe and seamless, with superb finishing clarity and lingering floral notes. Tannins make a late appearance but are quickly absorbed by this wine's luscious fruit. Josh Raynolds. WS 95 (2/2013): This is very densely packed, with toasted fig bread, charcoal, roasted espresso bean, steeped black currant and blackberry fruit, followed by a flash of pastis on the finish. Very dark and rich, but has grip and length for balance, revealing a terrific, but deeply embedded, graphite spine in reserve. Best from 2015 through 2030. 500 cases made. |

| WA 99 (10/2012): A candidate for perfection, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Imperiale Vignes Centenaire is clearly the greatest wine I have ever tasted from Raymond Usseglio, even eclipsing their remarkable 2007. Don’t be surprised if it merits a three-digit score in five or six years. Somewhat closed, but bursting with potential, the wine is inky/purple to the rim and boasts abundant amounts of concentrated, jammy blackberry, kirsch, licorice, lavender, forest floor, white chocolate and a hint of truffles in its magnificent perfume. Some tannins appear in the mouth, but there is no doubting the luxurious concentration, multidimensional mouthfeel, full-bodied texture, enormous extract and richness, and nearly endless finish. This monumental Chateauneuf du Pape needs to be forgotten for 4-5 years and consumed over the following 2-3 decades. |

It’s ruby/semi-opaque color is followed by a sumptuous, savory bouquet of ground pepper, rolled stone and oyster shell like minerality, seaweed, and garrigue that’s anchored by a vibrant core of sweet red fruits. Full-bodied, textured, fresh, and with chewy, ripe tannin on the finish, this will not be a wine for instant gratification and needs a solid 5-6 years of bottle age; it should keep for upwards of three decades. |
