BH 91-93 (5/2011): Like the Taillepieds, this is also highly perfumed with rose petal, fresh red berries, wet stone and an earthy component that can also be found on the equally mineral-inflected, cool and pure flavors that evidence excellent detail and real verve on the delicious, intense and persistent finish. A lovely and understated Pommard of finesse. Drink 2019+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! WA 93 (4/2012): The 2009 Pommard Les Pezerolles is rich, round and seductive. Layers of fruit caress the palate in this enveloping, textured Burgundy. There is plenty of intensity in the glass. Hints of hard candy and licorice wrap around the finish. The Pezerolles was made with 100% destemmed fruit. Although I like the wine’s frank immediacy, I also think it will age gracefully. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029. VM 91 (4/2012): (from all-destemmed fruit): Medium red. Flamboyantly aromatic nose combines kirsch, strawberry, smoke, leather and earth. Silky, sweet and pliant; can't quite match the Mitans for definition but an element of minerality provides energy. Finishes suave and persistent, with smooth tannins and moderate lift. |

| BH 90-92 (4/2018): Today there is enough reduction to push the underlying fruit to the background. Otherwise the middle weight flavors possess a similar mouth feel to the Taillepieds with fine delineation and more subtle minerality on the mildly austere finish that flashes a hint of dryness though I doubt that it will last. Drink 2026+. |

|
| |
VM 88-91 (3/2006): Medium red. Smoky red fruits and underbrush on the nose. Fat, full and sweet, with flavors of redcurrant and plum. Not more concentrated than the Mitans but possesses a bit more mineral spine. Slightly sauvage suggestions of leather and game. Stephen Tanzer. BH 87-89 (5/2006): A very gentle touch of wood frames ripe red pinot fruit, earth and background notes of iron and underbrush that introduce very ripe, round and rich medium full flavors that offer good vivacity and punch on the moderately long finish. The tannins do not have a high degree of phenolic ripeness yet there is no trace of astringency or undue dryness. (Drink starting 2010). |

BH 91-94 (4/2017): This is also appealingly elegant with its pretty liqueur-like red pinot fruit, spice, sandalwood and subtle earth scents. The mouth feel of the slightly bigger and richer flavors remains refined, lacy and focused with a lovely sense of underlying tension that continues onto the markedly firmer finish. Lovely. VM 92-94 (1/2017): Good dark red. Subdued but precise aromas of raspberry, cherry and flowers. Compellingly intense and lively in the mouth, offering terrific juicy cut to its red fruit and mineral flavors. This beauty boasts a firm spine of acidity and finishes with lovely ripeness and lingering perfume. Stephen Tanzer. WA 92-94 (12/2016): The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Champans has a very pure, very attractive bouquet with mineral-tinged red cherry and cranberry fruit that is equidistant in style between Pommard and Volnay. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. I love the tension here, that nascent energy and salinity towards the finish that actually does veer towards Pommard in terms of structure. Excellent. |

VM 87-90 (3/2006): Medium red. Deeply pitched aromas of cherry, chocolate and underbrush, with a faint peppery nuance. Fat, thick and sweet, with some superripe suggestions to the flavors of plum, redcurrant, raspberry and spices, but also a lightly herbal quality. Impressively round wine with terrific stuffing. Not hugely vibrant but undeniably fat and round, finishing with lush tannins and a note of underbrush. These degenerating vines produced fruit with 15% potential alcohol. This will give pleasure early. Stephen Tanzer. BH 86-88 (5/2006): A beautifully complex and obvious ripe nose of high-toned red berry fruit infused with obvious minerality merges into earthy, floral and raspberry liqueur-like flavors underpinned by firm and slightly dry tannins that are not quite as ripe. This would probably benefit from being fined. (Drink starting 2009). |

VM 91-94 (4/2009): (vinified entirely with whole clusters) Very good deep red. Captivating rose petal perfume. Sappy and vibrant, with an urgent quality to the berry, cherry, mineral and pepper flavors; showing a lovely restrained sweetness. Almost painfully intense today, and extremely primary. Finishes quite broad, with palate-staining perfume. At a modest 12.4% alcohol, this beautifully balanced wine boasts terrific intensity and plenty of density. Here's an example of a 2007 here that may top the 2005 version. BH 90-92 (4/2007): (26 year old vines). A reserved, indeed almost discreet nose of airy, refined and very pure mineral-infused red pinot fruit complements to perfection the equally pure, intense and wonderfully focused middle weight flavors that almost dance across the palate as they're silky and graceful yet possessed with superb punch. This is a classic Volnay that carries Outstanding flavor authority with no apparent weight. This could easily surprise to the upside as everything it needs for long evolution is here. Drink 2013+. WA 89-90 (6/2007): The de Montille 2005 Volnay Mitans displays a lovely nose of ripe cherry and flowers with an iodine mineral-medicinal note that, together with fruit skin tartness, follows on a highly-concentrated, impressively-layered, finely-tannic palate, with raw meat, floral and mineral suggestions dominating over any sweetness of fruit. The tightly wound finish here is smoky, pungent and subtly bitter. In two or three years one would be able to glean a clearer notion of this wine’s ultimate personality. |

| BH 89-92 (4/2016): In the same fashion as the Perrières there is quite a bit of wood and menthol character surrounding the otherwise fresh and pretty aromas of plum, spice and floral-scented nose. The intense and highly energetic middle weight flavors possess a discreet minerality and really lovely detail before culminating in a firm and mildly austere finish. This is a classic Mitans of delicacy and harmony. |

| VM 94 (1/2018): (100% vendange entier; one-third new oak): Healthy dark red. Complex but reticent aromas of kirsch and blueberry lifted by a floral quality. A bit youthfully withdrawn but lively and polished in the mouth, with a floral perfume that's rare for this drought year. Wonderfully classy, refined Volnay with outstanding subtle sweetness and energy and a very long finish featuring utterly suave tannins. A great young Volnay in the making. Stephen Tanzer. |

| BH 92-94 (4/2012): This is also exceptionally fresh, cool and bright and while the composition of the aromas is not dissimilar to that of the Mitans, here there is a noticeably greater emphasis on the mineral component. This minerality also defines the intense, delineated and highly energetic medium-bodied flavors that terminate in an explosive long and overtly austere finish. This stunning effort is a classic old school and completely textbook Taillepieds. Drink 2022+. Don't miss! Outstanding! |

Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts Christiane (1.5 L) Cracked Wax Capsule |
$1,500 |

|
| |
| VM 94+ (1/2018): (100% vendange entier; 60% new oak): Good medium red; not particularly dark. Subtle medicinal reserve to the aromas of black cherry and cocoa powder enlivened by a floral topnote. Boasts outstanding density and finesse of texture--no rough edges here!--but still quite tightly wound and in a shell today. Youthfully restrained but the exhilarating balance between almost inky dark fruits and saline minerality is already obvious. This wine has the concentration and tannic clout for the long term but will need extended cellaring to deliver on its full potential; at that point, it should merit an even higher rating. For his part, Brian Sieve believes this fruit was harvested a bit later than ideal (on September 6). Stephen Tanzer. |

| BH 93-95 (4/2021): This is also quite firmly reduced and revealing nothing at present. On the palate though the slightly bigger flavors possess only a bit more volume but notably more power and particularly so on the even longer though not necessarily more complex finale. This is very classy juice with that sense of poise that all great wines seem to have. Very promising. |

WA 91-93 (12/2014): The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets has a more limestone-scented bouquet, the fruit a little redder than that of Fremiets, opening with wilted rose-petal scents infusing the strawberry and red currant aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a little more flesh than the aforementioned premier cru, but maintaining appreciable balance and minerality that is neatly assimilated on the sappy finish. This should blossom once in bottle. There is class here. VM 90+ (3/2016): Good full red. Deep, ripe aromas of dark fruits and spices show a medicinal reserve. Densely packed and concentrated, with strong acidity contributing to a very primary, clenched quality in the early going despite the wine's solid ripeness. Finishes saline and firmly tannic but not dry. This cuvee is often the supplest and tastiest in the cellar at this stage but not this year. Less fruity than the 2014 but tactile and quite long on the aftertaste. Strong acidity should keep this wine young for a long time. Stephen Tanzer. BH 90-92 (4/2015): (from two parcels measuring .65 ha.) Reduction once again dominates the fruit. The mouth feel of the medium-bodied flavors is notably finer than that of the Fremiets with the same minerality and punch, all wrapped in a focused and lingering finish that also is ever-so-mildly warm and austere. In the same fashion the balance isn't quite perfect, but this is still very attractive. Drink 2021+. |

VM 92+ (3/2016): Bright medium red. Alluring superripe aromas of black cherry, mint and bitter chocolate: I would have guessed that this wine was vinified with some whole clusters but in fact it was entirely destemmed. A rather powerful Volnay with a slightly high-toned, almost porty ripeness to its black cherry, dark berry and chocolate flavors, but strong, slightly peppery acidity gives it a penetrating, somewhat disjointed quality in the early going. This deep, chewy Volnay finishes with big, granular tannins and excellent persistence. Stephen Tanzer. WA 92-94 (12/2014): The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Champans has a feisty, much more gourmand bouquet compared to its siblings at this early stage with almost meaty red berry fruit infused with limestone/flinty scents. The palate is very focused with an abiding sense of symmetry, long in the mouth with fine tannins (although not as filigree as the Taillepieds) but with the same silky and harmonious texture toward the long finish. Excellent. BH 90-93 (4/2015): (from a huge 3.98 ha parcel.) Reduction. Here there is more size, weight and power to the detailed and more subtly mineral-driven flavors that also possess a lovely texture on the dusty, palate coating and linear finish. This is impressively long and well-balanced though at present not quite as complex. Drink 2023+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

VM 94 (3/2016): Healthy dark red. Highly complex but youthfully restrained nose offers scents of black fruits, violet, chocolate, menthol and minerals, along with some faintly liqueur-like high tones. Boasts Outstanding density of texture, not to mention great lift and power for this bottling, with almost exotic fruit ripeness leavened by strong acidity. Finishes with spectacular lingering perfume of violet, bitter chocolate, wild herbs and mint. An amazingly strong, bulletproof Volnay for the year--or for any vintage, for that matter. Stephen Tanzer. WA 92-94 (12/2014): The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs has that citrus-like freshness; that Seville orange marmalade trait that was tangible in a range of mature Clos des Ducs tasted the previous week. There are touches of violet that emerge with continued aeration. The palate is very feminine and refined, laid back almost, but that distracts from the structure underneath and the persistence and minerality on the finish. This is a regal, perhaps one should say, "ducal," Clos des Ducs that should drink beautifully over the next 25-30 years. But as I discovered at the vertical, this vineyard needs several years in the cellar. BH 91-94 (4/2015): (a monopole that measures 2.15 ha.) A gorgeously fresh melange of black raspberry, cherry, tea, violets and anise scents introduces superbly well-detailed middle weight flavors that seem to be built on a base of firm minerality that continues onto the dusty, complex and strikingly persistent finish. As is often the case, this is the most complete wine in the range. Drink 2023+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

| BH 89-92 (1/2015): ( from vines averaging between 60 and 70 years of age located in Les Champs Perriers, En Deree, Sylvie, Les Jeunes Rois, La Justice, La Burie and La Platière.) A discreet application of wood intertwines with notes of black cherry, earth, humus and a hint of the sauvage. This is also quite lush though with more evident muscle to the medium-bodied flavors that are shaped by firmer and more prominent tannins on the balanced and lingering finish. This too delivers excellent quality for its level and will also drink well young if desired. Drink 2021+. Outstanding Top Value! |

BH 91-93 (4/2015): (from both Charmes and Mazoyères.) This is also notably floral with its cool mix of red and dark currant aromas that are liberally laced with notes of earth, game and wood nuances. There is fine power, punch and detail to the muscular medium weight flavors that possess an unusually refined mouth feel, all wrapped in a dusty, complex and impressively persistent finish. Good as this is, the Champeaux is just as interesting though in fairness I should note that it doesn't have quite the same size and weight as does the Charmes. Drink 2025+. VM 90-93+ (4/2015): The 2013 Charmes-Chambertin stands out for its intense minerality and energy. Crushed rocks, sage, chalk, spice and dark red stone fruits open up in a deep, powerful Burgundy endowed with notable class. It's pretty clear the 2013 is showing just a bare hint of its potential today. Still, from time to time, the wine's pedigree comes through loud and clear. Bernstein's Charmes is a blend of 60% true Charmes and 40% Mazoyères. VM 90-93 (1/2015): (a 50/50 blend of true Charmes and Mazoyères): Bright, deep red. Distinctly blacker on the nose than the Cazetiers, offering scents of blackberry, violet, chocolate and espresso. Dense, silky and sweet, with lovely energy and underlying minerality to its juicy dark berry flavors. The dusty tannins saturate the plate without introducing any impression of dryness. For a grand cru, this should give pleasure relatively early. |

VM 90-92 (1/2015): Bright, dark red. Reticent, rather wild aromas of dark cherry and underbrush. Energetic but backward; much tighter today than the village wine and more dominated by its structure. The wild quality carries through on the palate. Best today on the back end, where fine-grained tannins spread out to saturate the palate. WA 88-90 (12/2014): The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiets comes from a single parcel of vines. The nose is well defined, dominated by the new oak at the moment, but there is sufficient fruit underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins, quite dense at the moment with a touch of bell pepper on the masculine finish. Fine - if just a bit predictable. BH 88 (4/2015): Here too there are discreet floral nuances to the pretty red and dark currant scents that are liberally laced with earth and sandalwood nuances. There is a bit more volume to the medium-bodied flavors that retain a lovely sense of detail on the energetic, dusty and mildly austere finish though in this case there is just a hint of dryness that detracts slightly from the overall sense of balance and harmony. Drink 2020+. |

BH 94 (1/2016): ( from a .74 ha parcel of 35+ year old vines; Cathiard noted that in 2013 he used a 30 day cuvaison.) A brooding and ultra-fresh nose exhibits notably ripe and strikingly complex aromas of dark cherry and raspberry along with violet, lilac and a gorgeous range of spice elements. This is a big and robust effort with excellent volume and mid-palate concentration that delivers plenty of punch and power on the overtly mineral-driven and hugely long finish. While this will be approachable after only 7 to 8 years it will need fully 15 to reach its full potential. Textbook Malconsorts though I stress that there is no point in buying this if you're not prepared to cellar it for at least 8 to 10 years. Drink 2025+. Outstanding! VM 92+ (3/2016): Bright, saturated medium red. Captivating nose combines deep smoky minerality and sexy soil tones. Round on entry, then quite backward in the middle and much less showy than the Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Murgers. Today the wine's strong saline, smoky minerality is keeping the fruit in the background. Most impressive on the ripely tannic, very long finish. This will need considerable cellaring. | BH 87-89 (1/2015): (from a .93 ha parcel of 60+ year old vines.) An openly spicy and ultra-cool nose features notes of red and blue pinot fruit, rose petal and sandalwood hints. There is a sleek and beautifully detailed mouth feel to the delicious, intense mineral-driven middle weight flavors that culminate in a mildly edgy but persistent finish that is probably due to the high level of gas present. My predicted range offers the benefit of the doubt in this regard. Drink 2019+. |

| VM 94+ (3/2016): Bright, dark red. Highly expressive tangy scents of cherry, wild strawberry, pomegranate, crushed stone and mint. Superrich, tactile, dense and chewy yet light on its feet. Conveys a powerful sense of dry extract and outstanding clarity and cut to its flavors of raspberry, cherry and minerals. The 2014 version shows riper, blacker fruits while this is more about acidulated wild red berries. Wonderfully silky, smooth wine with outstanding energy and thrust. The wine's powerful fruit blows past its refined tannins on the palate-staining finish. Splendid! Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 88 (1/2016): (from the villages portion of La Bossière; 60% new oak.) An appealingly fresh and deeply pitched nose possesses undertones of earth and sauvage notes to the mix of red and dark currant scents. There is reasonably good richness but also good delineation to the lightly mineral-inflected middle weight flavors that display only a trace of rusticity on the frank, firm and intense finish. Drink 2020+. VM 88 (3/2016): Dark bright red. Cool aromas of black cherry, menthol and mint. Juicy and on the lean side, with tightly wound dark berry flavors accented by pepper and spices. Shows good intensity but the tannins are a touch dry. Will this put on weight with time in bottle? WA 87-89 (12/2014): The 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin Village has a clean and pure, rather “airy” bouquet, with fresh strawberry, citrus fruit and a slight stoniness. The palate is fresh and vibrant with tart red fruit, a citric line of acidity that is just slightly compromised by the dominant new wood at the moment. This is the one cru that I would have been more prudent about the use of oak, although it should meld together with time. |

| VM 94+ (3/2016): Full, dark red. Captivating rose petal lift to the aromas of red fruits, iron and minerals; less earthy and more ethereal than the Clos de la Roche. Also juicier and tighter in the mouth, showing less early sweetness but terrific acid spine and lift to the sappy flavors of raspberry and salty minerals. This wine has really put on weight since its bottling, noted Diane Snowden. But it still boasts terrific cut and inner-mouth tension. Lay this one down. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 91 (1/2016): (from a 1.16 ha parcel.) A discreet application of wood frames the fresh, cool and relatively airy aromas of high-toned cherry, pomegranate and ample floral scents. There is a sleek mouth feel to the utterly delicious and lightly mineral-inflected middle weight flavors that retain a lovely sense of underlying tension and fine delineation on the balanced, long and solidly persistent if presently linear finish that my score assumes will flesh out with bottle age. Drink 2023+. VM 91 (3/2016): Saturated dark red. Blackberry and black licorice on the nose, plus a medicinal note. Very ripe and a bit warm, showing a solid structure but less pliancy than the last few samples. Substantial slightly tough tannins make this a bit ungiving today. Just a touch dry but long on the finish. WA 89-91 (12/2014): The 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes (my sample taken from a new cask) has a fragrant, well-defined bouquet with pure raspberry preserve and crushed strawberry scents. There is palpable mineralite here. The palate has a firm grip on the entry, fine density with a straightlaced, lightly peppery finish that lingers nicely. I would have liked more depth toward the finish considering this is a Premier Cru, but let us see if this develops during the remainder of its barrel maturation. |

BH 93-95 (1/2015): A generous dollop of moderately toasty oak mixes with the highly layered nose of black cherry, cassis, warm earth and an impressive array of sauvage and underbrush notes. There is excellent richness to the overtly powerful and muscular flavors that possess an imposing sense of scale that continues onto the textured and mouth coating finish. Like several of the wines in the range in 2013 this is a big but not really massive wine that retains a sense of proportion even though the underlying structure is quite firm. This will need plenty of patience however. Drink 2028+. Don't miss! VM 92+ (3/2016): Full medium red. A note of reduction dissipated to show complex, inviting aromas of redcurrant, raspberry, dried flowers, spices and caraway seed. Dense, dry and gripping, with strong saline minerality giving it a distinctly serious mien. This youthfully uncompromising wine took on more body with aeration and finishes firmly tannic and very long. Very 2013 in its impression of salinity and extract. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 89-92 (1/2015): A fresh but restrained nose is completely different as it's less spicy and more floral with lovely and airy notes of both red and dark currant scents. There is good delineation to the vibrant middle weight flavors that exude a fine minerality on the firm, balanced and lingering finish. This does not yet possess superior complexity but my predicted range assumes that it will develop based on the quality of the underlying material. Drink 2021+. WA 88-90 (12/2014): The 2013 Chambolle-Musigny Aux Echanges is a cru close to Jean-Marie's heart as he told me that his mother used to play there when she was a child. This barrel sample, which was 70% through malolactic fermentation, has a floral bouquet with plenty of ripe mulberry fruit. The palate is succulent on the entry, sappy in the mouth with clean lines and a gentle grip on the finish. Fine. |

BH 89-91 (1/2015): (from 4 different parcels scattered above and below the 1ers and the blend of vines averages about 35 years of age.) Reduction flattens the nose but there is good freshness and energy to the supple and round medium-bodied flavors that also possess only a touch of backend rusticity on the complex, balanced and impressively persistent finish for a villages level wine. This is really quite good for what it is and worth your attention. Drink 2019+. Outstanding Top Value! WA 86-88 (12/2014): The 2013 Nuits Saint Georges Village had a slight reduction on the nose. The palate is supple in the mouth with crisp red cherry and strawberry fruit. There is decent depth here, a little disjointed at the moment but it should marry together nicely by the time of bottling in January. VM 86-88 (1/2015): Healthy bright red. Slightly reduced aromas of bitter cherry and lees. Sweet but reduced, with cranberry and raspberry fruit flavors complicated by earthy and saline traces. Boasts good lift but finishes with slightly tart-edged acidity. |

WA 92-94 (12/2014): The 2013 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru les Pruliers might well be the pick of the wines from Domaine Henri Gouges this year. It has a tightly wound, undergrowth-tinged bouquet with mulberry and briary aromas. The palate is underpinned by fine, taut tannins and a taut thread of acidity. This is very “streamlined” at the moment – all about the focus and energy rather than flamboyance. It has a lovely shimmering finish, with a long saline aftertaste. Excellent. BH 91-93 (1/2015): (a 2 ha parcel with a mix of 80% 75+ year old vines and the remainder of 15 to 20 year old vines.) Reduction again masks the fruit though it does seem ripe. There is good power and punch to the very round but imposing medium weight plus flavors that possess a sleek muscularity before culminating in a lightly mineral-inflected, palate coating and impressively persistent finish. I very much like the complexity though it's clear that this very firmly structured effort is going to require an extended stay in a cool cellar. Classic Pruliers. Drink 2025+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! VM 89-92 (1/2015): Medium red. Very ripe aromas of strawberry and mocha complicated by a leesy nuance. Superripe, dense and sweet in the mouth, with blackberry and violet flavors complemented by spices and saline minerality. This is quite creamy for a wine that has just 12.2% alcohol today (chaptalized from 11.7%) as well as strong acidity. Finishes with rich, building tannins and persistent sweetness. Perhaps less classic Nuits than the Clos des Porrets Saint-Georges, but I'm not complaining. |

BH 92-94 (1/2015): ( from a 1.1 ha parcel of 55+ year old vines.) A ripe and extremely fresh nose exhibits perfumed aromas of cassis, earth, spice, plum liqueur and the classic Nuits animale character along with a background touch of wood. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the velvet-textured broad-shouldered yet refined flavors that exude a fine bead of minerality onto the balanced, suave and mouth coating finale. This is a bit less structured than it usually is and certainly less so than the Vaucrains if only just. Drink 2025+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! VM 92-94 (1/2015): Bright red. Ripe, musky aromas of red berries, minerals and rust. Suave and creamy-sweet in the mouth, with an almost jammy ripeness but also very good framing acidity to the crunchy red berry flavors. Perhaps a bit youthfully disassociated at present, not to mention firmly tannic on the back end, yet this is easier to taste today than the Vaucrains owing to its sheer sex appeal. Offers superb potential. WA 91-93 (12/2014): The 2013 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru les Saint Georges, the “Grand Cru in waiting," is bestowed a pastille-like purity on the nose that takes time to get motoring, with a cheeky touch of marmalade developing. The palate is medium-bodied, has real class, bridled with with superb tension and fine tannins, even if it does not quite possess the riveting persistency on the finish that would complete the package. Still, this is a very fine Les Saint Georges that may merit a higher appraisal post-bottling. |

BH 92-94 (1/2015): ( from a 1.08 ha mix of younger and older vines that average about 50+ years of age.) A very spicy nose is composed of dense aromas of plum, violet, earth and pomegranate, all of which is trimmed in just enough wood to notice. The beautifully textured middle weight plus flavors possess excellent power and verve on the powerful finish that is shaped by a very firm core of ripe tannins. This is a deceptive wine as the mid-palate is supple to the point of being inviting yet the finale is firm to the point of mild austerity. Drink 2027+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! WA 92 (11/2016): Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains has an introverted, slightly earthy bouquet with a light marine influence upon the dark fruit. With aeration it comes out of its shell, brightens up and reveals more red fruit character. The palate is clean and fresh with fine tannin, well judged acidity, supple in the mouth with plenty of raspberry, red cherry and cedar notes towards the composed silky finish. This is an excellent Nuits Saint Georges that will repay 3-4 more years in the cellar. VM 91-94 (1/2015): (18 hectoliters per hectare produced): Full medium red. Very pure aromas of black cherry, black raspberry, mocha and chocolate mint, complicated by truffley underbrush. Sweet, sappy and deep; rich and tactile, combining lovely finesse of texture with obvious force. This highly concentrated, youthfully austere Vaucrains finishes with substantial dusty tannins and excellent persistence. Stephen Tanzer. WA 90-92 (12/2014): Cropped at 18 hectoliters per hectare due to millerande grapes, the 2013 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru les Vaucrains is more open and expressive on the nose compared to the Pruliers ’13, the fruit veering more to the red spectrum with heightened mineralite. There is also more femininity here and that translates to the palate that is silky smooth and beautifully poised. There is not a huge depth or power here, but there is great tension and vibrancy. Very fine, but it deserves two or three years in bottle. |

| BH 94 (1/2016): A restrained nose proposes a well-layered mix of plum, essence of cherry and pungent earth scents along with a hint of the sauvage. The textured, concentrated and powerful large-scaled flavors possess remarkable density on the mid-palate thanks to the abundant dry extract that buffers the very firm tannic spine and slightly softens the austere and serious but not hard finale. As good as the 1ers in the range are, there is simply another dimension of depth present here. In sum this is terrific but patience will definitely be required. Drink 2028+. |

BH 92 (1/2016): ( from 70+ year old vines.) Gentle but not invisible wood serves as a backdrop for spicy and distinctly earthy red and dark currant aromas that possess an unusual yet interesting top note of dried tangerine peel. As is the case with many of the Grivot 2013s the mouth feel of the middle weight plus flavors is relatively fine thanks to the refined if firm tannins that shape and support the suave, powerful and mouth coating finale. This moderately firm and ever-so-mildly rustic effort will also need all of 12 years or so to reveal its full potential. Worth considering. Drink 2025+. WA 91-93 (12/2014): The 2013 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots has a similar nose to the '13 Roncier with slightly less mineralite at the moment. The palate is crisp and fresh, a little spicier here than either the Roncier or Pruliers, with a dash of black pepper enlivening the finish. There is plenty of charm here, although contrasting the two barrel samples, I suspect that the Roncier will possess more complexity in the long run. VM 90+ (3/2016): Deep red with ruby highlights. Pungent perfume of black cherry, raspberry, minerals and licorice. Juicy but tightly wound, hinting at a racy high note of blood orange. All of these wines are showing firm tannic spine today but hiding their fat. |

VM 95+ (4/2016): Bright dark red. Precise, high-pitched aromas of red cherry, raspberry, licorice and mint. Utterly spherical, fine-grained wine with outstanding intensity; conveys a powerful impression of force but without any hardness or brutality. The pungent red berry flavors are complicated by suggestions of leather and game and given further punch by strong underlying minerality. Finishes with big, broad, building tannins that will require patience. Boasts outstanding inner-mouth tension and energy, but the sensuality of Vosne-Romanée is also on display here. A great showing. Stephen Tanzer. BH 95 (1/2016): This undoubtedly possesses the most floral nose of these 2013 grands crus with its notes of lilac, violet and rose petal along with a broad range of spice elements adding nuance to the dark berry fruit liqueur aromas. There is superb volume and intensity to the pungent mineral-driven and imposingly-scaled flavors that exude focused power on the extract-rich, explosively long and beautifully well-detailed finale. As good as the Echézeaux is, and it is indeed superb, the Riche is flat out great. As I have consistently underscored with the Grivot '13s though do not buy this wine in the hopes of instant, or even early, gratification as the Riche is going to require a very long snooze in a cool cellar. |

| VM 91 (3/2016): (50% new oak; 80% vendange entier): Deep, bright red. Reduced, wild aromas of black raspberry, licorice and game. In a large-scaled, sweet, rather powerful style, with plenty of salty extract to buffer its strong acidity. The wine's volume belies the fact that grape sugars at harvest were just below 12 degrees. Big tannins build with air. This will need time in the cellar to assume its adult shape. |

| VM 89-91 (1/2015): (vinified with 70% whole clusters; 40% new oak; 37 hectoliters per hectare produced): Dark bright red. Pure, vibrant aromas of black cherry, licorice and game, lifted by a floral tonote. Sappy, saline and intense, showing early sex appeal and balance to its high-pitched yet fully ripe dark fruit and licorice flavors. Finishes with smooth tannins and very good length. (Incidentally, Groffier's Bourgogne Pinot Noir, frequently an outperformer for its modest appellation, is a potential knockout in 2013. Aromas of ripe black raspberry, violet and game lead to a sweet, lush palate that shows serious muscle and cut to the spicy dark fruit flavors.) |

| BH 90-93 (1/2015): Reduction is sufficiently strong so as to render the nose impossible to evaluate. There is excellent size, weight and density to the medium-bodied flavors that possess a really lovely mouth feel thanks to the abundant dry extract as well as the quality of the tannins which are finer than usual. Even so the Nuits roots are in evidence as the lingering finish does display a touch of rusticity as well as an interesting hint of blood orange. This is well worth considering provided that you have at least a modicum of patience. Drink 2023+. |

WA 92-94 (12/2014): The 2013 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has quite a deep and introspective bouquet with broody dark berry fruit, wild hedgerow and forest floor aromas that draw you in. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and well judged acidity. This is linear at the moment, very nicely focused with a dash of white pepper on the finish livening things up. Very fine...but patience required. BH 91-94 (4/2015): Like the Charmes and the Griotte, Barnier said that this was not vinified by Jadot. There is a pretty and expressive nose of red currant, raspberry, wild cherry and soft sauvage hints where the latter continues onto the dense, serious and powerful big-bodied flavors that are also shaped by a very firm and slightly rustic finish that delivers excellent if not truly sensation persistence. I slightly prefer the Chapelle for its greater refinement but it's close qualitatively speaking. Note that this too will require plenty of patience. VM 90-92 (11/2014): Bright medium red. Lightly medicinal aromas of black cherry, licorice, menthol and smoke. Sweet on entry, then rather backward on the palate; has no shortage of salty stuffing but an impression of lowish acidity gives the brooding palate a slightly heavy quality. Tannins are reasonably ripe but this wine is a cipher today. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 91-93 (4/2015): (from 45+ year old vines that sit just above Champans.) This is notably more expressive at this early stage than it usually is with its wonderfully elegant, pure and layered melange of various red berries, iron-inflected earth, violet and various spice elements. There is excellent intensity and ample minerality to the intensely saline, firm and lingering finish. We will see how this evolves but this appears to slightly more pliant than it usually is though note that it will probably still require at least 10 years before it's at its apogee. Drink 2023+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! WA 92-94 (12/2014): The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chenes has a more expressive, mineral-driven bouquet than the Caillerets – so much energy here and that is translated down to the palate that is poised and focused. It is laden with vibrant tart red cherry fruit, boysenberry and mineral, great depth and length and yet so fresh and approachable. This is one of those wines that I suspect will drink early but also repay cellaring. VM 91+ (3/2016): Good dark red. Closed on the nose, hinting at redcurrant, minerals and menthol. Dense, sappy and penetrating in the mouth, showing lovely depth to its intense flavors of cherry and licorice. Substantial ripe tannins call for patience, but there's plenty of medicinal reserve here to support a positive evolution in bottle. Stephen Tanzer. |

| WA 97 (9/2016): Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 La Grande Rue Grand Cru has a backward and broody bouquet, very complex with hints of woodland, damp earth and fern filtering through the tightly wound red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple and very fine, almost filigree tannins. The acidity is beautifully judged here -- very focused and refined, seamless towards the sophisticated finish. This is one of the best vintages of La Grand Rue that I have tasted, which is a considerable achievement given that this was not an exemplary growing season. |

VM 94 (3/2016): Medium-deep red. Complex, high-pitched perfume melds blackberry, cherry, wild herbs, black pepper, underbrush and dried flowers. Classic Clos des Lambrays in its combination of red and black fruits, dried flowers, minerals, spices, licorice and earth and its pungent inner-mouth energy. This wine actually reminded me of a 1978! Finishes with firm, noble tannins and terrific piquant length. This is actually easier to taste today than the village wine but should evolve very slowly. Stephen Tanzer. WA 93 (9/2016): Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru is a divisive wine, not one for those seeking layer upon layer of fruit. It is more mature in appearance than its peers, perhaps missing the fruit intensity one would anticipate from a grand cru of this stature. There is something a little "dusty attic" here although that ebbs away with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly leafy entry, gentle and elegant, full of personality. It is missing the weight and volume that a more benevolent vintage would have lent and it does not quite possess the structure or substance to suggest long-term. Yet, it remains a well-crafted and to put it prosaically, is absolutely delicious. BH 92-94 (1/2015): (produced from two large parcels of differing vine age - one that is approximately two-thirds of the blend and is now 50+ years of age and a second, smaller group of vines that is approximately 25+ years of age.) Here too there is gentle wood setting off a similar if more complex nose that displays more prominent floral and spice scents. There is very good volume to the utterly delicious medium weight and wonderfully vibrant flavors that possess really fine delineation before culminating in a mineral-inflected, saline and focused finish. I very much admire the sleek mouth feel as well as the impeccable balance. Lovely juice that is moderately structured and a bit less youthfully austere than usual. Drink 2025+. |

WA 92-94 (6/2015): The 2013 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is one of Mounir's finest wines this year. Sourced from around the famous walled vineyard, it has a cohesive bouquet with straight-laced brambly red berry fruit that are very well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with strict crisp tannin, very good acidity and lovely poise on the sustained finish. If you seek an elegant Clos Vougeot than this will be the ticket. VM 92-94 (1/2015): Medium red. Reticent aromas of raspberry liqueur, violet, licorice and spices. Sappy, spicy and tight, with intense, primary red berry flavors accented by fresh herbs and pepper. This tastes like whole-cluster fermentation but this wine was vinified with only a small percentage of its stems. A very fresh, refined style of Clos-Vougeot. (Drink between 2024-2039). Stephen Tanzer. BH 91-94 (4/2015): This is restrained to the point of being almost mute though aggressive swirling does reveal darker fruit and soft earth aromas. The intense, detailed and overtly powerful flavors possess solid size, punch and concentration before terminating in a lingering and balanced finish that is less youthfully austere and rustic than usual. (Drink starting 2025). |

| BH 94 (1/2016): ( from a .6 ha parcel situated two-thirds in Cruots and the rest in Champs Traversin.) This is also strikingly spicy with exotic tea, anise, clove, cinnamon and dried orange peel nuances adding considerable interest to the black cherry, cassis and violet-suffused nose. There is seriously good richness and volume to the concentrated and marvelously seductive flavors thanks to an abundance of dry extract that really coats the palate and buffers the firm tannic spine on the energetic and beautifully well-detailed finale. I very much like the sense of harmony here as well and this should drink well both young and when fully mature. Drink 2028+. |

VM 89+ (3/2016): Bright red-ruby. Black cherry, licorice and a musky stony nuance on the nose. At once silky and juicy on the palate, with black raspberry and blackberry fruit flavors complicated by a saline quality. This densely packed wine shows little in the way of early sweetness and seemed to go into a shell in the glass, with its firm minerality gaining the upper hand. This will require patience. Stephen Tanzer. BH 86 (1/2016): An earthy and moderately somber nose features mostly notes of various red berries along with hints of underbrush and humus. There is good punch and detail to the lightly mineral-inflected flavors that exhibit a distinct edginess on the otherwise saline and lingering if slightly clipped finish. Most people will likely find the level of acidity too much for their liking as it imparts a distinct austerity and as such I would be disinclined to age this for very long. Drink 2018+. |

| BH 88 (1/2016): ( from 5 different parcels located in La Columbière, Champs Goudins and Le Pre de la Folie, which are contiguous vineyards located below the village and above the Route Nationale.) A discreet touch of wood sets off spicy herbal tea and red and dark pinot fruit scents. There is a sleek mouth feel to the delicious and vibrant medium-bodied flavors that are shaped by ripe tannins on the reasonably well-balanced, complex and lingering finish. This is a lovey Vosne villages that will require at least a few years of bottle age so that this can further flesh out. Drink 2021+. |

VM 91 (3/2016): Bright, dark red. Highly aromatic nose combines blackberry, black raspberry, minerals and spices. Sappy and fine-grained; very dry and concentrated, conveying a strong impression of inner-palate energy. Sexy cherry and crushed stone flavors are framed by suave tannins on the very long, aromatic back end. Showing more eclat than it did from barrel a year ago, this wine has turned out very well. Drink 2019-2028. Stephen Tanzer. WA 91 (11/2016): Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Marechale has a more sophisticated and nuanced nose compared to its peers, red and black fruit here and well integrated oak. The palate is smooth in the mouth, supple and quite plush, clearly with some quality new oak that is almost Cathiard-like in style (something that appears to have evolved in the last few months). However, there is fruit to support that here. Give this 2-3 years in bottle and it should turn into a very decent Nuits Saint-Georges. BH 89 (1/2016): This is admirably pure and relatively high-toned despite the presence of ample earth influence on the bright mix of red raspberry and cherry scents. There is good volume to the beautifully textured medium-bodied flavors that display a sleek muscularity before terminating in a firm, mouth coating and well-balance if mildly austere finale. This should improve for up to a decade. Drink 2021+. |

BH 94-97 (1/2015): This is also absolutely stunning in every respect and displays a kaleidoscopic combination that is not quite as spicy as the Clos St. Denis though it is earthier and almost as complex. It is immediately clear that this is a bigger and more powerful wine that possesses Outstanding mid-palate density and a huge reserve of dry extract that imparts a seductive mouth feel and mostly buffers the exceptionally firm tannic spine on the massively long finish. This is an imposing effort that is even more imposingly structured and there is no point in buying this if you're not prepared to forget it in the back of your cellar for at least a decade, and two to three would be preferable. This is a stunner of a Clos de la Roche and it will be interesting to see which of the two Ponsot big boys is ultimately the better wine. WA 95-97 (12/2014): The 2013 Clos de la Roche Cuvee Vieilles Vignes, from vines planted in 1905, has an inviting, delineated bouquet with vibrant wild strawberry, raspberry preserve and mineral notes. The palate has great tension – so suave and poised with superb symmetry and an effortless finish that I don’t think the Clos Saint Denis has at the moment. Laurent Ponsot did not disguise his enthusiasm for this Grand Cru and I could understand why. |

VM 97 (3/2016): Very good deep red. Closer to the CSJ than to the CDB on the nose, offering terrific pungent lift to the aromas of black raspberry, rose petal and blood orange. Wonderfully sappy and pure, without any impression of weightiness to its saline flavors of raspberry, spices and white pepper. Utterly fine-grained, silky wine with great finesse. One of the longest, most palate-saturating wines of this vintage, finishing with noble tannins and taste bud-titilllating perfume. Perfectly balanced also but built for a glorious evolution in bottle. It would be a shame to open this bottle too soon. Stephen Tanzer. BH 96 (1/2016): Once again subtle reduction pushes the underlying fruit to the background so I recommended decanting it for those of you who can't wait at least 5 years to try a bottle. There is even more size, weight and intensity to the velvety, powerful and opulent big-bodied flavors that possess an abundance of palate soaking dry extract that pushes the otherwise tightly coiled tannins to the background on the massively long coffee-inflected finish that really fans out as it sits on the palate. This is very firmly structured but actually a bit less austere than it usually is and thanks to the abundant dry extract might be approachable a bit sooner than usual too. In short, this brilliant effort is one of the greatest wines of the 2013 vintage. Drink 2035+. |

VM 96+ (3/2016): Very dark bright red. Great purity and lift to the aromas of black cherry, violet, graphite, bitter chocolate and minerals. Showing less obvious density today than the Bonnes-Mares but this is extremely tight and unevolved, with its saline crushed stone and mineral elements currently dominating its underlying fruit. The yield was just 20 hectoliters per hectare, due in large part to millerandage, but this extremely imploded Musigny is showing little of the early sweetness one might expect from tiny berries. Finishes with outstanding flavor authority, length and grip. This wine should go on for decades. Stephen Tanzer. BH 96 (1/2016): (from an incredible 6.46 ha parcel, which doesn't include the .67 ha parcel planted to chardonnay.) This is also quite aromatically restrained with its cool, airy and extraordinarily complex nose that features notes of red raspberry, black cherry, violet, rose petal, Asian-style spices, in particular cinnamon and anise plus a hint of orange pekoe tea. There is superb concentration to the intensely stony and well-delineated broad-shouldered flavors that also brim with palate soaking dry extract that helps to buffer that imposingly powerful, tautly muscular and massively long and youthfully austere finish. This is breathtaking in just how much power and intensity it packs yet there isn't a hair out of place. In a word, 'wow'! Drink 2033+. |

WA 93 (12/2002): Ausone's extraordinary minerality is present in the 1995, yet there are more aromatics, a richer, more multidimensional palate impression, and a fuller texture - all with the terroir brilliantly expressed. The wine boasts a dense ruby/purple color and an emerging but tightly-knit nose of spring flowers, minerals, earth, and black fruits. Rich, with an opulent texture and surprising sexiness for a young vintage of Ausone, the medium-bodied 1995 displays exquisite balance between its acid, tannin, alcohol, and fruit. Although it is not yet seamless, all the elements are present for an extraordinary evolution in the bottle. This wine will age at a glacial pace for 30-40 years. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2045. Last tasted, 3/01. VM 92+ (5/1998): Deep violet-tinged ruby. Lively cassis, black cherry, tobacco and smoky oak aromas. Lush and dense, though a bit shocked by the bottling. Combines the penetrating, juicy quality and class of previous vintages of this wine with the more opulent texture and suaver tannins craved by so many of today Bordeaux lovers. May well eventually merit a higher score, but will it surpass the '96? Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 95+ (8/2002): aturated deep ruby, much darker and brighter than the other vintages tasted. Sappy, fresh aromas of boysenberry, cassis, minerals, bitter chocolate and espresso, with complicating notes of underbrush and earth. Extremely pure and penetrating, with fruit of steel and a powerful mineral underpinning. Finishes with strong, firm tannins and great persistence. Essence of Ausone, without the funkiness shown by so many past vintages of this wine. Offers exciting potential. Drink 2008 to 2030. WA 94 (4/2001): A dense opaque purple color offers up restrained, but pure aromas of liquid minerals, blackberries, black raspberries, and flowers. Medium to full-bodied, with high tannin but a long, super-pure, symmetrical mouth-feel, this dazzling, extremely complex Ausone requires 6-10 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2050. |

WA 95 (4/2002): Is the 1999 Ausone the wine of the vintage? Dense purple color, a compelling bouquet of licorice, minerals, black and blueberry liqueur, extraordinary delineation, high tannin, superb extract, and phenomenal richness all are the stuff of a legend. This wine seems impossible to have emerged from a vintage like 1999. Proprietor Alain Vauthier produced only 20,000 bottles because he eliminated one-fourth of the tiny crop. The result is out-and-out fabulous, but the wine needs 12-15 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2050. VM 92 (6/2002): Full medium ruby. Aromas of plum syrup, spice cake, minerals, Valrhona chocolate and tobacco. Sweet, suave and fairly full in the mouth, with strong underlying minerality. Finishes subtle and persistent, with dusty, even tannins and some new oak showing. |

WA 98+ (6/2010): Two bottles were badly corked, which is certainly a scary situation for a wine where only 1,000 or so cases were produced. However, a third bottle was magical and just short of perfection. Its saturated purple color was followed by a surprisingly more evolved and open wine than I had written in my tasting note in 2003, where I predicted maturity between 2020 and 2075. This wine displays wonderful, sweet tannin and a big, sweet kiss of truffle, crushed rock, blueberry, blackberry, and licorice. Extremely rich, full-bodied, with astonishing power, precision, and delicacy, this is a sumptuous wine that should age well for 50-60 years, but in the case of the one bottle out of three that was not corked, it seemed far more evolved and forward than I suggested in my write-up in 2003. VM 97+ (5/2003): Bright ruby-red. Profound nose melds raspberry, black cherry, mocha and minerals. Wonderfully silky and spherical, with monumental solidity and yet incredible inner-mouth perfume. This builds and builds toward the back, finishing with big but suave tannins and extraordinary minerally length. One of the two or three greatest wines I tasted on my spring trip to the Bordeaux region. Stephen Tanzer. |

WA 95 (4/2005): In many respects, the 2002 may be even more impressive than the 2003. A far more challenging vintage to get everything right, and especially in St.-Emilion, where many disappointments have been produced, this is one of the wines of the vintage and (along with Pavie) among the finest wines from the Right Bank. It possesses a deep purple color as well as a gorgeous nose of creme de cassis, blackberries, wet stones, and wonderfully perfumed floral notes. When the wine hits the palate, it exhibits impressive purity, medium to full body, a multi-layered texture, and extraordinary precision and intensity with a finish just short of 50 seconds. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2035. VM 93+ (6/2005): Saturated ruby-red. Explosive aromas of blackberry, minerals, violet, espresso and bitter chocolate. Fine-grained and pliant but with terrific precision of flavor and grip. Finishes juicy and very long, with substantial dusty tannins and excellent life and lift. |

WA 100 (4/2006): The 2003 Ausone is off the charts in terms of richness. While I gave a 3-digit score to the 2000, I think this profoundly concentrated wine may be even more sublime and exotic. Its inky/blue/purple color is followed by an extraordinary perfume of flowers, crushed rocks, sweet raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and God knows what else. The impression is one of extraordinary richness and purity, and a multilayered texture yet a surreal lightness as well as laser-like precision. This exquisite offering must be tasted to be believed. Incredibly young, it will undoubtedly close down over the next few years, re-emerging after 15-20 years. It should last for 70-100 years. It is a wine for anthology! VM 95+ (6/2006): Full ruby. Black raspberry, mocha, minerals, graphite and nutty oak on the superripe nose. Extravagantly rich and sweet in the mouth without coming off as heavy. This boasts extraordinary fruit intensity and verve (it's hard to imagine cabernet franc better than this), and finishes with great palate-staining persistence. But this powerfully tannic wine may already be starting to shut down in the bottle. Like the 2005, it will need a decade of aging at a minimum, and possibly a lot longer. |

WA 94 (6/2007): One of the vintage’s most compelling wines (what’s new about that?), Alain Vauthier’s beloved 2004 Ausone has closed down considerably since I tasted it out of barrel, but it remains among the most concentrated wines of the vintage. Furthermore, along with Petrus, it will probably be the longest-lived. A dense purple color is accompanied by a celestial perfume of blue and black fruits, wet stones, flowers, and incense. On the palate, the wine exhibits exceptional power and concentration, but this historic terroir has also provided a surreal lightness to the wine’s impression. Beautiful flavors, sensational depth, and abundant structure suggest this 2004 will not be close to full maturity for 8-10 years. It should last for four decades. VM 93+ (6/2007): Good deep ruby. Currant, minerals and nutty oak on the nose. Lush, sweet and pliant on the attack, then more closed in the middle palate, with a chewy, rather serious texture and impressive density for the year. The black fruit flavors are complicated by minerals, dark chocolate and mocha. Finishes with a rather powerful tannic spine that will require a good decade of patience. I can envision the 2006 evolving in a similar direction. |

VM 100 (4/2021): The 2005 Ausone is magnificent. A wine of soaring intensity and class, the 2005 dazzles from the very first taste. The aromatics alone are captivating, with notes of cinnamon, mint, crushed rocks, blood orange, mocha and incense. Graceful and stately in bearing, the 2005 boasts tremendous purity and breathtaking balance. Readers will find a stunning Saint-Émilion that is just at the beginning of what promises to be a very long drinking window that will be measured in decades. It is a towering achievement from the Vauthier family. (Drink between 2022-2055). Antonio Galloni. WA 100 (6/2015): The 2005 Ausone is a perfect wine of the vintage. It displays crushed rock, spring flowers, blueberry and blackberry fruit, a full-bodied mouthfeel, stunning purity and richness, and perfect harmony among all of its component parts (acidity, tannin, wood, alcohol and extract). Still youthful, but oh, so promising, this wine should be set aside for another decade and drunk over the following 50-75 years. |

JS 100 (2/2012): Incredible nose of currants and blueberries. Flowers too. Licorice. Such purity on the nose of Cabernet Franc. Full body, incredible structure, with fabulous tannins and a long, long finish. Built out of stone. The perfect Ausone. Try after 2022. WA 98+ (2/2012): A masterpiece in the making, proprietor Alain Vauthier’s 2009 Ausone boasts a dense purple color along with notes of powdered chalk, crushed rocks and wild blue, red and black fruits. Extravagantly rich with great minerality, precision and freshness as well as a voluptuous texture (unusual for a baby Ausone), this is an extraordinary wine. Sadly, there are fewer than 1,200 cases ... for the world. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2060+. VM 97 (3/2019): The 2009 Ausone has a sumptuous bouquet with pure blackberry, raspberry, rose petal and orange blossom aromas. The wine is beautifully defined blossoms with aeration. It becomes very liquorice and menthol-like after 10 minutes’ aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. It is not a powerful 2009 and it feels sleek and quite tensile. Pure red fruit linger in the mouth with a very deft, almost understated finish. So elegant, so Ausone. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting. Neal Martin. |

| WA 95+ (4/2014): Its bigger sibling, the 2011 Ausone increases the level of intensity, elegance, complexity, richness and length. Nearly a mirror image of the La Chapelle, just with more going on, the Ausone boasts a more saturated purple color, and the wine has everything in large, intense proportions. The finesse and delicacy of all its components are what make it such a remarkable wine. The quality of the tannins and purity of the fruit make this another legendary effort that should age for 30-40 years. |

WA 96 (1/2016): Tasted blind at the 2012 Southwold tasting, the 2012 Ausone took more time to settle in the glass than its peers, eventually deciding upon briary, violet and cassis scents—very floral and Margaux-like in style, not powerful but insistent. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a crisp line of acidity, blackcurrant pastille mixed with cedar and a dash of spice, the wine finally revving up towards an intense and persistent finish that almost stains the mouth with its opulence. It is a gorgeous Saint Emilion from Pauline and Alain Vauthier. Tasted January 2016. VM 95+ (1/2016): One of the wines of the vintage, the 2012 Ausone boasts gorgeous depth, aromatic intensity and overall balance. Dark red stone fruits, menthol, licorice, smoke and savory herbs flesh out as this layered, seductive Saint-Emilion shows off its pure pedigree and class. Further time in bottle should allow the 2012 to flesh out even more, but it is pretty special today. I remember tasting the 2012 straight from barrel with Alain Vauthier in the spring of 2013. The bottled, finished wine is every bit as special. The blend is 55% Cabernet Franc and 45% Merlot. Antonio Galloni. JS 98 (2/2015): Wild aromas of mint, spearmint, cool chalk and dark fruits. Full-bodied, tight, linear and incredibly long with a evening-stone, blueberry, cherry and mineral undertone. Crisp and extremely persistent. Iodine and oyster shell here to round it all off. Better in 2018. |

WA 99 (11/2018): The 2016 Ausone is a blend of 50% Cabernet Franc and 50% Merlot. Deep garnet-purple colored, it's quite closed at first glance, slowly unfurling to reveal the most incredible perfume of violets, chocolate-covered cherries, warm black plums, Black Forest cake and roasted nuts with suggestions of charcuterie, wood smoke and cedar chest. The medium to full-bodied palate offers a quiet intensity of flavors that grow in the mouth to unveil layer after layer of black and red berries intertwined with beautiful savory notions framed by firm yet velvety tannins, finishing with epic length and amazing energy. It practically tingles on the palate! JD 98 (2/2019): The 2016 Château Ausone is up with the crème de la crème of the vintage and isn’t far off the thrilling 2015, although it shows a more seamless, elegant character. Loads of spice, crushed violets, floral notes and subtle oak give way to a full-bodied beauty that has thrilling cassis and black raspberry fruits, polished tannin, perfect balance, and a great, great finish. This thrilling Ausone needs 4-6 years of bottle age but will keep for 30 years or more. VM 97+ (8/2020): The 2016 Ausone initially left me nonplussed, and so I left my glass for 10 or 15 minutes before returning to a different wine. The nose had opened up to reveal red cherries, wild strawberry, rose petals and touches of crushed stone and pencil shavings. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins and perfectly matched acidity. This is very refined and fleshy, almost Burgundian toward the finish, with just the right amount of bitterness. A brilliant wine, but it needs time. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. Neal Martin. JS 98 (1/2019): Very exotic and fascinating with dark-berry, floral and violet aromas that follow though to a full body that is tight and polished with ultra-fine and driven tannins. They really are amazing. A wine with such strength and finesse at the same time. Confident and real Ausone. A blend of 50 per cent merlot and 50 per cent cabernet franc. Better after 2025. |

WA 98 (3/2020): The deep garnet-purple colored 2017 Ausone is a blend of 55% Cabernet Franc and 45% Merlot. It sashays out of the glass with gregarious scents of baked red and black plums, wild blueberries and boysenberries plus touches of violets, espresso, licorice and melted chocolate with wafts of iron ore and tilled soil. Medium-bodied, the palate is an exercise in poise, featuring beautifully ripe, silken tannins and bold freshness to support the fragrant multi-layers, finishing very long and very minerally. VM 97 (3/2020): The 2017 Ausone is incredibly precise and sculpted, but also tightly wound in the early going - not that that will be a problem for readers who own it and will cellar it. Wild flowers, mint, blood orange and crushed rocks are some of the nuances that open up in the glass, but the 2017 is not in any mood to show all of its cards. Vertical, rich and explosive with tons of inner energy, the 2017 is a truly regal wine, but it also needs a number of years to be at its very finest. Here, too, the Franc (55% of the blend) really shines. This is a stellar showing from the Vauthier family. Antonio Galloni. JS 97 (12/2019): Love the perfume and pretty, transparent fruit. Purity. Raspberries. Full-bodied, extremely focused and bright with clarity and beauty. Juicy and savory. Chalk and light chocolate at the finish. Try after 2024, but gorgeous to taste already. JD 96 (2/2020): From a vintage compared to 2011 and 2014 by the estate, the 2017 Chateau Ausone is a classic blend of 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot that’s from the pure limestone hillsides just outside the village of Saint-Emilion. This full-bodied, elegant, almost Burgundian beauty offers a terrific seamlessness as well as lots of ripe cassis and black cherry fruits, notes of truffle-laced earth, tobacco, and crushed stone, ultra-fine tannins, and a great finish. This is classic Ausone, with its complexity and elegance paired with plenty of richness and depth. It needs 5-7 years of bottle age and will evolve for 2-3 decades. |

WA 98-100 (4/2019): The 2018 Ausone is composed of 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot. The Merlot was harvested September 25 and 27, and the Cabernet Franc was harvested October 3, 8 and 9. Deep purple-black in color, it is an impenetrable wall to begin, unrelenting without persistent coaxing, at last uncoiling to offer glimpses at preserved plums, blueberry coulis, molten licorice and underbrush with emerging scents of lavender, iron ore, crushed stones, charcoal and Indian spices plus a waft of red roses. Full-bodied, rich, decadent and tightly knit, it offers layer upon layer of fruit, spice and mineral nuances with a firm frame of exquisitely fine tannins and bold freshness, finishing with epic length and heart-stopping beauty. VM 97-100 (5/2019): The 2018 Ausone is off the charts. Deep, sensual and mysterious, the 2018 is going to need many years to show the full breadth of its potential. And yet, there is so much there. Rich and concentrated on the palate, with phenomenal persistence, the 2018 is loaded with energy, tension and precision, offering a compelling interplay of opulence, saline intensity and structure. It is without question one of the wines of the vintage. Antonio Galloni. JD 96-99 (5/2019): Ratcheting up the intensity, the 2018 Château Ausone has an essence of limestone-like character as well as thrilling notes of blackberries, black raspberries, white flowers, truffle, forest floor, and graphite. Possessing full-bodied richness, a deep, beautifully concentrated mid-palate, ample tannins, and a great finish, this is a powerful, layered Ausone that’s going to need 5-7 years of bottle age but should knock your socks off over the following 25+ years. The 2018 is a blend of 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot, brought up in a mix of new and used barrels. JS 99-100 (4/2019): This is really exotic with wild-fruit character that I have seldom encountered in Ausone. Full-bodied yet reserved and very tight. Amazing depth and purity of fruit. Incredible beauty. Sexy. |

WA 98+ (4/2022): Unwinding in the glass with deep aromas of wild berries, vine smoke, orange rind, exotic spices and violets, framed by a deft application of classy new oak, the 2019 Ausone is full-bodied, rich and concentrated, with beautiful purity of fruit, lively acids and ripe but abundant structuring tannins. Deep, layered and vibrant, it's full of potential and will likely emerge as one of the most long-lived 2019s. This is another magical wine from what many consider to be Saint-Émilion's greatest terroir, and it will demand and richly reward patience. JD 98 (3/2023): A brilliant wine in every way, Alain Vauthier's 2019 Château Ausone reveals a dense purple color as well as an incredible bouquet of ripe black cherries, blueberries, acacia flowers, lead pencil, and classy oak. It shows the elegant style of the vintage yet brings a wealth of fruit, lavish richness, and a great, great finish, all while holding onto beautiful precision and purity. It has some accessibility today (surprising for a young Ausone) but deserves at least 7-8 years of bottle age and will evolve for well over three decades. VM 98 (2/2022): The 2019 Ausone is a deep, statuesque Saint-Émilion that is at the beginning of what will surely be a very long, long life. Its vertical energy, stunning aromatics and persistence are all things of beauty, but it is the balance here that is so captivating. The acids and tannins are at once searing in their intensity and yet also totally woven into the wine's fabric. Ausone can be quite flattering in its youth. The 2019 is a wine that readers will have to wait for. I wouldn't dream of touching a bottle for a decade or more. Antonio Galloni. |

WA 97-100 (4/2022): A blend of 65% Cabernet Franc and 35% Merlot, the 2021 Ausone is a strong candidate for the title of wine of the vintage. Wafting from the glass with aromas of wild blueberries and raspberries mingled with rose petals, violets, exotic spices, vine smoke and blood orange, it's full-bodied, seamless and sensual, with a satiny attack that segues into a deep, layered mid-palate of breathtaking precision and intensity without weight. Built around bright acids and ultra-refined tannins and concluding with a resonant, perfumed finish, this profound young Ausone represents the essence of this great limestone terroir. I am not in the habit of drinking six-month-old Bordeaux cask samples, but this is one wine that would have sorely tempted me to make an exception to that rule if my appointment at the estate hadn't been one of the first of the day! JA 95 (4/2022): Violet edging, jewel red depths. There is austerity on the tannins here, but also great depths through the palate, with controlled but juicy loganberry and raspberry fruits, and waves of saffron, creamy red-fruit puree, crushed rock, cold ash and salt-cracker salinity. Subdued, with hidden power and complexity. A tough year for this stable of wines - or rather proof of their exceptionally high standards, making a half production of Simard, no Haut Simard, tiny amounts of Fonbel and almost certainly no Moulin St Georges. The last year that Ausone will be recorded as a Premier Grand Cru Classé A, before publication of the new ranking in September 2022. Harvest September 30 to October 6, 100% new oak. In conversion to organic farming since 2020, Philippe Baillarguet cellar master. Average vine age 55 years. VM 93-95 (5/2022): The 2021 Ausone was picked on September 30 for the Merlot and October 4–6 for the Cabernet Franc, with a higher percentage of Cabernet Franc because some of the Merlot was deselected into the Chapelle. Matured in 90% new oak, this has a fragrant and floral bouquet, more iris than violet, revealing a hint of seaweed in the background. The palate is well-defined, quite strict and focused, certainly one of the more mineral-driven Ausones that I have encountered at this stage. The limestone terroir is evident on the finish. Again, this is a little leaner and less flamboyant than recent vintages. Having tasted Ausone at this prenatal stage for over 20 years, I don’t find the thrilling "drive” or the pyrotechnics of the 2001, 2010, 2016 or 2019. Yet this Ausone is compelling in its own uncompromising way, and I wouldn't want it any different. |

JD 94-96 (5/2023): Cassis, red plums, graphite, chalky minerality, violet notes, and a hint of espresso all emerge from the 2022 Chapelle D'Ausone, which is based on 60% Cabernet Franc, 33% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Sauvignon. With a vivid purple hue, medium to full body, ripe, present tannins, and a great finish, it's one hell of a second wine that will probably have 20-25 years of longevity. VM 92-94 (5/2023): The 2022 Chapelle d’Ausone is a powerful but also embryonic wine. Here, too, the wine’s balance is impeccable. Super-ripe red cherry fruit, blood orange, spice, menthol and rose petal all meld together. Chapelle is a powerhouse second wine, if that term can even be used. The blend is 60% Cabernet Franc, 35% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Antonio Galloni. WA 91-93+ (5/2023): A blend of 60% Cabernet Franc, 35% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2022 Chapelle d'Ausone offers up aromas of cherries, raspberries and rose petals mingled with subtle hints of incense. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's taut and youthfully firm, concluding with a mineral finish. JA 95 (5/2023): An impressive Chapelle that opens with a wave of opulence, rich and confident in its construction. Majors on tobacco, cigar box, liqourice, chocolate, creamy damson, black cherry puree, velvety tannins. Incredible to think that this character can be teased out of pure limestone soils, but their fingerprint, with a welcome edge of salty cracker, comes in on the finish. Takes the character of the vintage and leans right in to it. Highly accomplished. 3.5ph, 100% new oak. Conversion to organic farming since 2020, Philippe Baillarguet cellar master, Pauline Vauthier owner and winemaker. |
