|
| |
| VM 96 (6/2024): The fantastic 2008 Shiraz The Armagh is a bull at the gate, displaying dense and muscular aromas of blackberry, chocolate and coal dust with a slaty minerality. Tightly packed and energetic flavors follow with well-matched, chewy T-Bone tannins. It concludes with a picture-perfect finish, showcasing superb power, weight and length. Angus Hughson. |

| |
VM 89+ (8/2003): Medium red-ruby. Expressive nose melds raspberry, currant, smoked meat, truffle and espresso, with a very ripe smoky element. Sweet but quite firm in the mouth; the bright berry fruit seems a bit youthfully hard, owing to the wines strong spine of acidity. Juicy finish shows firm but fine tannins. WA 88 (8/2003): The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Brookmans Vineyard is a dense, chewy, full-bodied effort revealing plenty of cassis, a multi-layered texture, and moderately high tannin in the finish. Patience will be required as this seems to be a slightly leaner version of Cabernet Sauvignon than the other examples. |

Patience will be a virtue. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020. |

| WA 93 (8/2003): The 2001 Syrah Moritz Vineyard comes across as a more elegant version of the 2002. It is profoundly concentrated with floral notes intermixed with blackberries, creosote, earth, and background oak. Although fabulously rich and long, it appears a bit undersized next to the 2002. The large-framed 2001 will hit its peak by 2007, and last until 2020. |

The Dead Arm Shiraz |
$59 |
3 |
|
| |
WA 93 (10/2005): After re-tasting the 2002 The Dead Arm Shiraz, I believe my initial rating is correct. It still plays it close to the vest, exhibiting loads of cassis, asphalt, smoke, and barbecue spice-like aromas along with full-bodied flavors. While well-made and impressive, it remains backward and restrained, and does not appear to be up to the quality of either the 2003 or the great 2001. VM 91+ (8/2004): Bright full ruby. Varietally expressive aromas of currant, espresso, smoke, gunflint and sexy oak, with a distinctly feral note. Highly concentrated, dense and smoky, with a strong syrah note of gunflint. Broad, mouthfilling shiraz with lovely framing acidity, intriguing minerality and impressively sweet tannins. |

| WA 95+ (2/2009): D’Arenberg’s flagship is the 2006 The Dead Arm Shiraz. Opaque purple-colored, the nose is reticent but gives up aromas of meat, bacon, game, truffles, blueberry, and blackberry. Firm, layered, and complex, this beautifully rendered Shiraz demands a decade of cellaring. It will be superb from 2018 to 2036. |

$55 |
3 |
|
| |
| WA 93 (8/2003): The 2002 The Laughing Magpie Shiraz/Viognier (93% of the former and 7% of the latter) is the La Mouline of McLaren Vale. An exotic, heady, flamboyantly-styled red, it boasts an inky/purple color as well as a gorgeous nose of lychee nuts, acacia flowers, blackberries, and creme de cassis. Supple-textured and opulent, with pepper, licorice, and blackberry liqueur-like flavors, this beautiful wine is made in a modern, progressive style with terrific fruit intensity along with notions of sweet French oak in the background. It should drink well for 10-12 years. |

|
| |
WA 96 (12/2010): Medium garnet in color, the 2004 Shiraz Command Elderton Estate is a little mute at this stage, revealing subtle to moderate aromas of leather, sandalwood and spice over warm blackberry plus some mocha. Full-bodied with medium-firm fine tannins, complex evolving flavors and a great line of acid, the finish is very long. Give it another year or 2 for the nose to emerge from this closed stage and drink it 2012 to 2022+. WS 94 (12/2008): Supple, silky and appealing for its cherry pie, cherry jam and dusky spice aromas and flavors, showing enough transparency to hint at licorice and coffee around the edges. Lingers impressively on the polished, harmonious finish. A lithe, focused, ageable red. Drink now through 2016. 600 cases imported. VM 92+ (10/2007): Dark purple. Bright red and dark berry scents display impressive focus and clarity, with subtle baking spice and vanilla notes adding complexity. Very fresh-in fact almost painfully young-with nervy raspberry and cherry flavors supported by silky tannins and a jolt of acidity on the back. This opened up a bit with air, but really should be cellared for at least another five years. |

Command Shiraz |
$55 |

|
| |
WA 93+ (12/2011): The 2008 Command Shiraz comes from 1894 Shiraz plantings of a single estate owned block of 8 acres. It spends 3 years in 100% new oak, 65% American, 35% French. Deep garnet-purple colored, it displays moderate to intense blackberry preserve and dried mulberry aromas with an undercurrent of anise, Indian spices, yeast extract and black pepper. Full bodied, rich and opulent in the mouth, it has a medium level of velvety tannins, refreshing acid and a very long, very spicy finish. Drink it now to 2021+. JD 93 (6/2011): A step down from the ’06, but still impressive, the 100% Shiraz 2008 Elderton Shiraz Single Vineyard Command delivers a ripe, upfront bouquet of sweet blackberry styled fruits, menthol, spice, and underbrush. This is followed by a full bodied, round, supple wine that possesses excellent balance, sweet fruit, good acidity, and ripe tannin on the finish. Seemingly not as age-worthy as the ’06, this will still drink beautifully for a decade or longer. VM 93 (7/2012): Glass-staining ruby. High-pitched aromas of crystallized black and blue fruits, violet and allspice, with suave vanilla and mocha qualities adding richness. Deeply concentrated dark fruit flavors are impressively lithe and precise, with peppery spice and minerality providing lift. Finishes smooth and sweet, with lingering blueberry and floral pastille notes and striking clarity. Josh Raynolds. |

Amon-Ra Barossa Valley Shiraz |
$89 |

|
| |
| WA 95 (10/2004): The flagship offering, the 2002 Shiraz, is produced from 90- to 100-year-old dry-farmed vineyards that yielded a microscopic .25-1 ton of fruit per acre. Aged 15 months in 100% new American oak barrels and hogsheads, its inky/purple color is accompanied by tantalizing aromas of charcoal, acacia flowers, blackberry liqueur, blueberries, and cassis. This deep, full-bodied, smoky, rich, full-throttle Shiraz is remarkably well-balanced as well as intense. Give it 1-3 more years of bottle age, and drink it over the following 10-15. |

| WA 93 (10/2005): This dense ruby/purple-colored wine exhibits a sweet nose of vanilla, graphite, blackberry, and cassis. Full-bodied and pure, with decent acidity and a moderately tannic, silky finish, it is accessible enough to be drunk now, but will be even better in 1-3 years. It should last for a dozen years or more. |

Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon |
$59 |

|
| |
VM 93 (8/2006): Dark red. Gorgeous bouquet of cassis, red cherry, tobacco, mocha, oak spices and minerals. Deeply concentrated flavors of redcurrant, cherry, licorice, vanilla and cured tobacco are impressively juicy and deep, with a distinct mineral tone adding nerve and focus. This has serious weight but also poise and elegance, like first-class St. Julien but with American oak accents and more power and fruit expression. Should age and improve effortlessly for at least a decade. WA 90 (10/2005): From the cooler climate region of Margaret River, the 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon, made from 27-year-old dry farmed vines, aged in primarily French oak, and bottled unfiltered, exhibits a dark ruby/purple color in addition to a French-like bouquet of tobacco, cedar, plums, and red as well as black currants. A finesse-styled, slightly austere effort with loads of complexity and stature, it should drink well for 10-15 years. WS 89 (12/2006): Firm, a restrained red with a generous bead of blackberry, currant and spice at the core, shaded with earth and herb notes as the finish lingers. Drink now through 2012. 500 cases made. |

|
| |
| WA 96 (2/2009): The 2005 Alice’s Shiraz spent 28 months in seasoned American oak hogsheads. Aromas of smoke, asphalt, meat, game, truffle, and blueberry soar from the glass. On the palate this full-bodied Shiraz is velvety-textured, layered, spicy, and richly fruity. While not quite as riveting as the 2004 edition, it has enough structure to evolve for several years and should drink well through 2025. |

|
| |
WA 95 (4/1997): Other than the top cuvees of Penfolds' Grange, and the old vine Grenache and Astralis from Clarendon Hills, no Australian wines are richer than these offerings from Henschke - a winery that gets my nod as one of Australia's two or three finest producers. Each of these wines coats the mouth with glorious levels of jammy fruit, extract, glycerin, and silky tannin. They are all dense ruby/purple-colored, full-bodied, and capable of lasting at least a decade, and in the case of the 1991 Shiraz Hill of Grace, possibly 20+ years. WS 91 (6/1995): Marked by minty currant aromas with flavors to match. A bit rustic and still tannic, but it unfolds some complex flavors and holds together. Should be even better by 1997. 1,000 cases made. |

| WS 94 (11/1997): Earthy, almost decadent-tasting, but there are plenty of ripe plum, prune and black cherry flavors to accompany the gamy streak and hints of black pepper in this distinctive wine. Impressive now, better in 2000 or 2002. |

| WA 91 (4/2013): Deep brown in color, the 1993 Hill of Grace shows dried herb characters over notes of dried cherries, earth and pencil lead. Crisp and concentrated, it has firm, chewy tannins and offers a good expression of what fruit remains, even if it is a little under-ripe and lean in the long finish. It is mature. |

VM 92+ (7/2000): Deep, bright ruby-red. Extremely subtle, complex nose combines black raspberry, smoked meat, orange peel, dark chocolate, earth and game. Large-scaled and powerful on entry; then silky and voluminous. Really expands on the palate and builds on the aftertaste, with the fruit outlasting the ripe tannins. I would have scored this wine even higher except for a hint of disjointed acidity. Stephen Tanzer. WA 91 (4/2013): Deep garnet-brick in color, the 1995 Hill of Grace has a slightly leathered, dried fruit nose that is a little tired though highlighted by notes of sandalwood, tree bark and earth, hints of leather and meat. There's a touch of barnyard on the palate and it is a bit past its peak, fading slightly with crisp acid and firm, chewy tannins through a long finish. |

VM 94 (4/2023): The 2006 Shiraz Hill of Grace is still young and feels far from its peak. It already displays significant volume and rich aromas of primary mulberry, blackberry, clove and cedar in a riper frame that have not yet been fleshed out. The palate also remains a little closed with spicy dark berry fruits wound up in mouthcoating tannins. However, the length and balance are immaculate, suggesting it just needs time. Angus Hughson. WA 97 (4/2013): Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2006 Hill of Grace has some oak poking through the red and blue fruit aromas, with underlying toast, marmite and sage hints. Medium to full-bodied, it is a very tight knit and youthful wine with crisp acid, medium to firm, finely grained tannins and a long finish. Drink it 2014 to 2030+. |

WS 98 (6/2015): This sings like a chorus that never runs out of breath. Layers of currant and dark plum fruit harmonize with black walnut, licorice, smoke and coffee notes, weaving through the long and immensely expressive finish. Has depth and great presence. Shiraz. Best from 2018 through 2030. 25 cases imported. WA 97+ (2/2014): Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the nose on the 2009 Hill of Grace is a little closed, though it reveals notes of warm black plums, blackberry coulis and cloves with subtle nuances of dried Provence herbs, forest floor and lavender. Medium to full-bodied, it possesses layers of medium to full-bodied black fruit and earth-laced flesh elegantly structured by a medium to firm level of finely grained tannins, nicely balanced acid and a long finish. Drink it now to 2026+. JS 97 (5/2017): One of the most triumphant top tier South Australian reds from the 2009 vintage, this has a layered and luxurious feel to it — a trademark array of spice and fruit characters with a lot of sage, fresh blackberry and toasty oak, some more meaty fermentation-derived notes and a graphite edge, smoky too. The palate is supple and even. Tannins have a polished sheen to them, layered and supple, great fleshy volume and drive. It is deeply ripe and the tannin structure is both subtle and profound. It resonates long, a very deep wine that's enduring, supple and fleshy with a sapid, purring finish. VM 96 (7/2014): Inky ruby. Explosive spice- and smoke-accented black and blue fruits and incense on the intensely perfumed nose. Palate-coating, very primary blackcurrant, floral pastille and fruitcake flavors reach every corner of the palate, with juicy acidity providing lift and verve. Smoothly combines power and vivacity, and finishes with Outstanding clarity and thrust, the supple tannins building slowly. I suspect that this remarkable, deeply concentrated shiraz will still be alive and kicking a couple decades from now. Josh Raynolds.viding lift and verve. Summer’s Block Ancient Way Shiraz |
$269 |

|
| |
| WA 94 (12/2018): Deep garnet colored, the 2007 Ancient Way Vineyard Summer's Vineyard sings of preserved plums, Christmas pudding, figs and incense with suggestions of spice cake, licorice and Morello cherries plus a waft of tobacco. Rich, spicy and full-bodied in the mouth, it offers an alluring texture of soft, rounded tannins and just enough freshness, finishing very long and with loads of savory nuances coming through. |

Old Vine Shiraz |

|
| |
| WA 90 (8/2003): The exceptional 2001 Shiraz Old Vine (from 110- and 40-year old vines) was aged 24 months in French and American oak, and bottled unfiltered. A saturated ruby/purple color is followed by sumptuous aromas of creosote, blueberries, blackberries, melted licorice, and a hint of espresso. Sweet and full-bodied, with copious fruit as well as style and grace, it is tempting to say these wines are too big and rich, but they are controlled, with surprisingly fine definition. This 2001 should drink well for 10-15 years. |

| WA 93 (8/2003): Even better than the Old Vine, is the 2001 Shiraz The Bogan, produced from a 40-year old vineyard situated near the Greenock Creek Winery. Aged in 100% new American oak for 20 months prior to being bottled unfiltered, this is a hedonistic, full throttle, pedal to the metal, top-class Australian Shiraz. Sweet vanilla and caramel notes intermingled with smoky black currant and blackberry fruit jump from the glass of this hedonistic, opulent, voluptuously-styled Shiraz. With decent acidity, ripe tannin, and a layered, blockbuster finish, this stunning effort will drink well for 10-12 years. |

| WA 98 (10/2006): There are 1,400 cases of the flagship cuvee, the Block 6 Shiraz, which is aged 28 months in 60% new American oak and 40% new Hungarian oak. Typically, it possesses between 15-16% alcohol and is always a candidate for twenty or more years of cellaring. The 2004 Shiraz Block 6 is the finest example of this cuvee since the 1998. It is an awesomely concentrated Shiraz with an inky/plum/garnet/purple color and a sweet nose of roasted meats, dried herbs, ground pepper, blackberries, and cassis. This intense, full-bodied effort boasts a profound depth and richness as well as layer upon layer of awesome concentration and length. While approachable, it should hit its peak in 5-6 years, and last for two decades or more. |

| WA 93 (7/2023): The 2017 vintage has been responsible for a wide variation in quality in Cabernet Sauvignons across the region. Here, the 2017 Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon is more minty and structural than the glossy 2016 that preceded it. It it savory and leafy and fine. I recall this being one of the best Cabernets produced in this vintage. It is holding well, and it has plenty of time ahead of it; however, I would drink it before many of the other vintages that surround it. |

WA 96-98 (10/2006): The 2005 Shiraz 9 (a 4,000-case cuvee that spends 18 months in new and one-year-old American oak) reveals a big, toasty, smoky nose, but the oak is beautifully absorbed by extravagant quantities of blackberry and cassis fruit intermixed with licorice, incense, and spice. This full-bodied, powerful, rich, layered stunner should drink well for a decade. VM 87+ (8/2007): Saturated ruby. Powerful, room-filling aromas of dark berry compote, vanilla, chocolate, cola and espresso aromas show a head-spinning quality (this says 16.5% alcohol on the label). Fat, soft and oily, with sweet cassis, plum and blackberry flavors sweetened by mocha and vanilla. Doesn't seem especially tannic but maybe they're lurking underneath the wine's confectionary quality. An unctuous, jammy example of shiraz that could use more energy, but this style has its fans. |

It possesses amazing intensity, great equilibrium, a fabulous, multi-layered mid-palate, and a blockbuster finish. | WA 92 (7/2020): The 2018 Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of fruit from Coonawarra, Padthaway, Wrattonbully, McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley and Robe. Classically built, it begins with scents of mint, cigar box and cassis, later adding nuances of olive and chocolate. It's medium to full-bodied, with a smooth, silky yet unyielding feel on the palate, and it ends in a wash of dusty tannins. While approachable now, cellaring 2-3 years should result in greater harmony, and this admirably concentrated wine appears capable of aging well for more than a decade. |

WA 90 (6/2001): The Outstanding 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 707 is a thick, rich, full-bodied Cabernet emphasizing copious quantities of cassis fruit. Pure, with nicely integrated oak, acidity, and tannin, it cuts a broad swath across the palate. While still young and grapy, this 1998 is loaded with potential. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2015. |

WA 97 (2/2014): The 2009 Grange Shiraz is a comprised of 84% Barossa, 8% McLaren, and a little Clare Valley and a little Magill fruit with a small 2% of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. At this youthful stage, this deep garnet-purple colored wine puts forward a vivid expression of blackberry preserve aromas amid underlying cassis, black cherry, spice box, char-grilled meat and chocolate box notes. Surprisingly medium to full-bodied (it smells much fuller!) with taut flavors that are very closed in the mouth, it has firm, chewy tannins to structure through the long and earthy finish. 406 cases imported to the US. Drink it 2018 to 2035+. JS 95 (3/2014): A tiny 2% Cabernet component in 2009, this is sourced from the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley and Magill Estate and has spent 18 months in exclusively new American oak hogsheads. The depth and complexity on offer is straight up impressive, blue and black fruit aromas unwind, meaty at times, some dark green herbal notes and a cedary layer of oak lurking below. The palate has a core of essence-like flavour with plenty of oak-derived spice framed around blackberry, blood plum and cola. Tannins are smooth and even, flavours are gently glazed around the dark fruit spectrum, some blue fruits too. This is a wistful Grange that, as always, faithfully reflects the vintage. VM 94 (7/2014): 98% shiraz and 2% cabernet sauvignon): Inky ruby. Intense spice- and mineral-accented aromas of cherry pit, blackberry and plum, with smoke and floral qualities adding complexity. Taut and linear on entry, then fleshier in the mid-palate, offering zesty dark fruit and violet pastille flavors and hints of licorice and vanilla. Finishes smoky, spicy and very long, with youthfully firm, building tannins adding grip. In a relatively taut, wound-up style for this wine; by all means give it some age. WS 94 (8/2014): Aromatically pure, with beautiful focus to the blueberry, black currant, espresso and cream character. In the mouth this sprouts prickly tannins and picks up a distinct tomato leaf note that sends the wine in a different direction. This has depth, length and plenty of ripeness without excess weight, but lacks the complete harmony of the best vintages. Best from 2016 through 2030. 406 cases imported. |

JS 100 (2/2015): The 2010 Grange arrives with much expectation and does not disappoint. This is a powerhouse, structurally superior to both the 2009 and 2008 vintages and breathtakingly dense, long and precise. The nose has cola, blackberry, vanillin, hard brown spices of all kinds, coal smoke, meaty charcuterie elements and a strong tarry, savory note that speaks of the 85% Barossa Valley componentry. The palate has super deep tannins that fan out through flavorsome black fruits. These are purposeful tannins - they bristle on the palate, tantalizing and assertive yet playful; strong not aggressive. The power here is the thing: This has mouth-coating density and terrific drive, so tightly coiled, it gives enough away to suggest a very, very long cellaring wine is here. This is a classic Grange that will please the serious collectors. A wine of genuine pedigree. Drink in 2026. WA 99 (10/2014): The 2010 Grange is a 4% Cabernet Sauvignon and 96% Shiraz blend made from Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale and Magill Estate fruit that was aged 17 months in 100% new American oak hogsheads. Very deep purple-black in color, this is classic Grange - amongst the finest produced - replete with fresh, vibrant and youthful black fruit notes showing some blueberry aromas and accents of camphor, anise and the slightest floral hint plus a whiff of oak in the background to lend a cedar-laced lift to this textbook Shiraz nose. Medium to full-bodied in the mouth, it is very taut and finely constructed showing typically firm, grainy, uniform tannins, great concentration and wonderful persistence on the finish. If I have any very slight complaint of this near perfect wine it is that it seems a little too clinical and appears to speak less of the land and the heart of South Australia and more of the very skilled winemaking than did the Grange from the magical 2008 vintage. WS 98 (12/2014): Focused, elegant, powerful and layered, exhibiting plum, currant, floral, spice and coffee flavors that come together seamlessly and persist on the long, complex finish. This has presence and deftness in equal measure, with well-integrated tannins. Best from 2018 through 2030. 371 cases imported. |

WA 99 (10/2017): Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2012 Grange sports an earthy/meaty nose with notes of tree bark, dusty earth, underbrush and chargrill over a core of dried mulberries and Christmas cake, plus hints of pepper and baking spices. Rich, medium to full-bodied and seductive, it has spicy layers and a long meaty/savory finish. JS 98 (1/2017): A simple split between the Barossa Valley (81%) and McLaren Vale (19%), this has all the hallmarks of a great Grange. Deep and ripe dark-plum and black-cherry aromas lead the nose, and there's plum cake here too that's really ripe and deeply spicy. The 100% new American oak has been thoroughly subsumed below tarry and savory brooding notes of black licorice and olive tapenade. The palate's incredibly poised and has richness with composure driven by tight-knit tannins and plenty of ripe dark-plum and cherry-fruit flavors. It is neatly crafted, powerful yet contained and smoothly rendered into the finish. This is a powerful vintage that has been cleverly polished and tamed in the winery; it will live long. Best from 2025 and for two decades after that. WS 97 (2/2017): Powerful and impressive, this seamless expression offers chai tea, sandalwood, dark chocolate, gingerbread and tobacco notes that complement the juicy black cherry fruit flavors at the core. Gains momentum on the finish. Intense but polished, revealing an air of weightlessness that lingers. Drink now through 2035. 357 cases imported. |

WA 100 (10/2017): Remember that old Heinz Ketchup “anticipation” ad from the 1970s? The palate of this 2013 Grange does just that. It makes you wait with so much delicious promise being drip fed into the mouth at first—and then it bursts forth and delivers! WS 97 (3/2018): This is bold, with plenty of power and grace. Dense and lush up front, featuring aromatic notes of espresso and milk chocolate, with a core of fresh, juicy raspberry coulis, wild blackberry and maraschino cherry flavors. Perfumed gingerbread, licorice, sandalwood and Kalamata olive details emerge on the epic finish, showing tremendous harmony. Drink now through 2037. 897 cases imported. JS 96 (10/2017): A good Grange, approachable yet impressive, it is reminiscent of the 2009. Smells of deep ripe dark plum and redder fruits, the oak jumps in and out of the nose, quite rich blackberry compote, dark spices, tar and earth. There’s density and depth in the palate, this embraces the full bodied and fully ripe capacity of the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Coonawarra and Magill Estate fruit. The fruit is persistent, commanding and dense, it delivers power in a more traditional shape. Best from 2022 and two or more decades hence. |

| WA 98 (10/2018): Rich, concentrated and intense, the 2014 Grange delivers exactly what we've come to expect from this Penfolds icon wine. It's full-bodied, velvety in feel and loaded with plummy fruit, framed in vanilla and cedar. Dense, powerful and tannic, it should prove to be long lived, even by Grange standards. Gago doesn't rate the vintage overall that highly, but he says the selection this year for Grange was a bit more stringent and that production levels were just average. There are still over 1,000 cases for the United States. |

JS 100 (7/2019): Much anticipated vintage for Grange and it is a powerhouse of concentration and complexity. Aromas of orange and lemon peel to start, then graphite, blackberries, plum paste, black cherries, boundless sweet oak spice, fresh cedar, tar, mahogany, roasted coffee and chocolate - the list goes on. Such complexity. Classic Grange, offering such deep, dark intensity. The palate has immense richness and depth with a super succulent and very long, fleshy, deeply weighted array of dense, velvet-wrapped tannins that run so long. The fruit flavors sit in the blackberry, blood-plum and blueberry zone with succulent, long and assertive structure, carrying through in an utterly seamless mode. The finish is tightly wrenched, in spectacularly powerful style, locking this wine in for a very long haul. Best from 2030. JD 99 (11/2019): The flagship 2015 Grange is a monster of wine and one of those rare wines that blends power and elegance perfectly. Revealing a saturated purple color, it’s seemingly more forward and seductive than past great vintages, which I suspect is due to the incredible purity of fruit as well as the wine’s flawless balance than any change in winemaking or stylistic shifts. I also think the acidity is healthy, and the 2015 tips the scales at 14.5% alcohol, which is certainly in the sweet spot, if not tame, for beautifully ripe Syrah these days. A blend of 98% Shiraz and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon that spent 20 months in new American oak hogsheads, it offers an extraordinary perfume of sweet crème de cassis, lead pencil shavings, camphor, Asian spices, licorice, and wildflowers. This is followed by a full-bodied, powerful yet incredibly seamless and elegant Shiraz that has no hard edges, a big, dense mid-palate, ripe tannins, and a great finish. Coming close to rivaling the 1986, which has always been a benchmark vintage of Grange for me, the 2015 offers a more polished, elegant, approachable style. Vintage comparisons aside, this is a legendary example of Grange in the making. The savvy wine lovers out there will give this 7-8 years of bottle age (I’ll probably be out of bottles by then) and enjoy over the following 2-3 decades. WA 98+ (8/2019): The nose of the 2015 Grange features the wine's characteristic lifted aromas, joined by pronounced American oak influence and bold blackberry fruit, plus hints of red meat, raspberries, asphalt and vanilla. It's dense and concentrated on the palate, full-bodied yet balanced and firm, with a rich, velvety texture and long, plush finish. Don't expect great complexity at this stage—it's much too young to show much more than the primary fruit and oak elements—but this is a Grange that should easily go three or four decades. WS 97 (11/2019): Distinctive and powerful, yet still elegant, showing restraint despite the dense and generous flavors. Precise notes of dark chocolate, maraschino cherry, mahogany and toasted coconut complement the core of wild blackberry and blueberry fruit. The tannins are smooth and polished, delivering some tug on the finish, which persists as subtle hints of dried lavender and white pepper linger. Drink now through 2040. 879 cases imported. |

WA 99 (7/2020): The 2016 Grange includes 3% Cabernet Sauvignon and was sourced from Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Clare Valley, with a little bit from Magill Estate, in the suburbs of Adelaide. Aged in 100% new American oak (as always), it offers up trademark lifted aromas plus scents of vanilla, toasted coconut, cedar, raspberries and blackberries. Impressively concentrated and full-bodied, with an extraordinarily long, velvety finish, it's nevertheless reasonably fresh and tight, with decades of cellaring potential if properly stored. Certainly at least on a par with such vintages as 2010 and 2012, the big question is whether it will ultimately reach triple digits. JS 98 (7/2020): This is a very intense Grange with such rich black-fruit, tar and coal-smoke aromas together with iodine and black-olive notes and an array of wild dark herbs. Almost impenetrable dark plums and licorice, as well as bacon fat. The palate has such seamless delivery of intense blackberry and plum flavors with some redder tones emerging, too. The power here is countered by such freshness and an almost elegant feel. This has such impressive, vibrant, long and seamless fruit power. Really is exceptionally complete, but tight, needs time to open. Very enjoyable now, but better after 2023. VM 96 (12/2021): Saturated ruby. Displays highly perfumed aromas of dark berry preserves, cherry-cola, pipe tobacco, smoky oak and vanilla, along with exotic spice and floral topnotes. Smooth, broad and appealingly sweet, intense, spice-laced blackcurrant, cherry, candied violet and mocha flavors show outstanding depth and energy. The dark fruit and floral notes resonate on a strikingly long, seamless finish that features well-integrated tannins and building spiciness. (Drink between 2027-2039). Josh Raynolds. |

Highly pungent, smoke- and mineral-accented aromas of cherry pit, violet candy, cured tobacco, savory herbs, coconut and exotic spices on the kaleidoscopic nose. Shows superb clarity and spicy lift to its spice-laced bitter cherry, cassis, blueberry and floral pastille flavors, which take on black cardamom, menthol and cola nuances as the wine slowly stretches out. Shows superb delineation and spicy thrust on the youthfully tannic finish, which features resonating cherry, blue fruit and floral notes. Josh Raynolds. |

RWT Bin 798 Shiraz |

WA 95 (8/2019): Red raspberries abound on the nose of the 2017 RWT Shiraz, which—as usual—is all Barossa fruit aged in French oak (70% new). It's full-bodied and velvety, with appealing notes of dried spices, beef and plenty of red fruit. There's a cedary veneer to this vintage, which looks as if it will need a couple of years to come together, then drink well for up to two decades. VM 94 (12/2021): Inky ruby. Spice-accented black and blue fruit, vanilla, pipe tobacco and cola aromas are complemented by a smoky mineral overtone. Palate-staining cherry liqueur, blackcurrant, mocha and spicecake flavors show impressive depth and are braced by a spine of juicy acidity. Gains energy with air and finishes gently sweet and long, displaying persistent cherry and spice notes and harmonious, slowly building tannins. (Drink between 2026-2036). Josh Raynolds. JD 93 (11/2019): The 2017 Shiraz RWT, also known as the Bin 798, is all Barossa Valley Shiraz that’s always brought up in French oak, with 70% being new in 2017. It checks in behind the magical 2016, but nevertheless it’s still a beautiful Shiraz that offers everything you could want from this variety. Sporting a deep purple color as well as a beautiful perfume of crème de cassis, black raspberries, toasted bread, vanilla bean, white flowers, and plenty of spice, it’s full-bodied, elegant, and silky on the palate, and what it lacks in density and depth, it makes up for it with its incredible purity and elegance. It’s approachable today (give bottles an hour in a decanter), yet I suspect it will benefit from short-term cellaring and keep for 15+ years or more. It’s a class act. (Drink between 2019-2034). |

VM 92 (8/2006): Ruby-red. Potent aromas of bitter cherry, pepper, licorice and tobacco show excellent varietal accuracy. Tangy and vibrant, with strong cherry and cassis flavors complemented by subtle notes of minerals, cured tobacco and spicy oak. A focused, youthfully restrained cabernet that has the concentration and balance to reward cellaring. Offers impressive potential. WA 90 (10/2005): The deep ruby/purple-colored 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits a restrained, elegant bouquet of black fruits, minerals, and toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, with excellent concentration, purity, and texture, it should be consumed over the next 7-10 years. Former winemakers Sarah and Sparky Marquis have left Shirvington and the wine is now being made by Kim Johnston. Little has changed, although the 2004s appear to be more streamlined and delicate than their 2003 and 2002 counterparts. |

WA 95 (10/2005): The sensational 2004 Shiraz’s inky/purple color is followed by aromas of graphite, blueberries, and creme de cassis. It offers wonderful purity, plenty of stuffing, toasty espresso notes from new oak barrels, admirable intensity, and a tremendous finish. Drink it over the next decade. Former winemakers Sarah and Sparky Marquis have left Shirvington and the wine is now being made by Kim Johnston. Little has changed, although the 2004s appear to be more streamlined and delicate than their 2003 and 2002 counterparts. VM 90 (10/2007): Dark purple. Ripe blackberry and boysenberry on the nose, with a strong vanillin overtone lending a confectionery character. Sweet dark berry and kirsch flavors teeter toward the liqueur side but are firmed by silky tannins, gaining a pleasingly bitter licorice quality with air. A captivating blend of sweet, ripe dark berry fruit and oak spice, with surprising poise and energy on the close. Not for those with old-fashioned tastes but undeniably alluring, with impressive concentration and a luscious personality. |

WA 95 (10/2004): A brilliant effort, the 2001 Shiraz (Second Release) was aged 30 months in 3-year-old French casks. Full-bodied, powerful, rich, and well-balanced with well-integrated wood, acidity, and tannin as well as spectacularly pure blackberry and cassis fruit infused with touches of charcoal, smoke, and new saddle leather, it should drink well for 10-15 years. WS 88 (7/2004): Ripe, broad and generous with its earthy berry and plum flavors, a touch of something like beet root coloring the profile. A sturdy wine that should develop with cellaring. | WA 99 (10/2006): The 2003 Shiraz (100% Shiraz from a 90-year-old Vine Vale vineyard) was cropped at .5 tons of fruit per acre, and was aged 32 months in old French oak. It is a magnificent effort boasting tremendous ripeness as well as abundant blueberry and creme de cassis notes intermixed with flowers, graphite, and crushed rocks. With amazing concentration, purity, and richness, but no heaviness (the alcohol is only 14.5%), and a finish that lasts well past a minute, it is accessible now, but should age effortlessly for two decades or more. |

WA 95 (2/2009): The Shiraz for the 2006 The Descendant is sourced from a single vineyard and co-fermented with 8% Viognier. It was aged for 18 months in seasoned French oak. Opaque purple-colored, it emits an expressive, sexy perfume of violets, wood smoke, black pepper, espresso, blueberry, and chocolate. Full-bodied, on the palate, this voluptuous effort has great concentration with a noticeable uplift from the Viognier, tons of spicy black fruits, enough ripe tannin to evolve for a decade, and 60-second finish. It should provide pleasure from 2016 through 2036. VM 93+ (10/2008): Inky violet. Powerfully scented, brooding aromas of boysenberry, cherry compote, licorice and smoky minerals; aeration brings up brighter black raspberry and blackberry qualities, which carry onto the palate. Broad and deeply concentrated, presenting a seductive array of sweet dark berry liqueur flavors and a late jolt of tangy minerals. Clings tenaciously to the palate and finishes with lingering blackberry and candied plum flavors. This really deserves some patience. WS 73 (12/2008): Strange, green, bitter flavors turn gamy on the finish. Shiraz and Viognier. 900 cases made. |

Purple-colored, it exhibits an enthralling nose of smoky oak, roses, garrigue, lavender, black cherry, and black raspberry. It conceals enough ripe tannin to support 5-7 years of additional cellaring. This layered, lengthy effort should be at its best from 2012 to 2024. VM 94 (10/2009): (100% grenache) Deep, vivid ruby. Strikingly perfumed bouquet of black raspberry, cherry pie, incense and anise. Lush and creamy, with deep, sweet red fruit and bitter cherry flavors complemented by notes of exotic candied flowers and licorice. Supple tannins frame the expansive fruit and add definition to the long, focused, spicy finish. WS 92 (2/2010): Ripe and generous, offering a supple mouthful of cherry, black pepper, bacon and spice flavors that rocket through a layer of fine tannins. The Laird Shiraz (1.5 L) Lightly Scuffed Label |
$1,800 |

| WA 100 (12/2010): The Laird is Powell’s new baby, coming from a single 5 acre / 2 hectare vineyard of Shiraz in the Marananga sub-region planted in the 1960s that recently became available for contracting. This is a very different wine from Run Rig. What is most striking about it is the combination of power and elegance in this first vintage, coming from a very good year in the Barossa. Matured for 3 years in new Dominique Laurent “Magic Casks” (Troncais French oak barriques with thicker staves designed for the long aging of Shiraz), 2005 The Laird gives a deep garnet color and pronounced nose that shows savory and spice notes over the fruit, with aromas of hung meat, Peking duck, fertile loam, underbrush, tree bark, anise, cumin seed, menthol, dried roses and lavender over warm black cherries, crush blackberries and fruit cake. The tight-knit, full-bodied palate is very fine with a high level of silt-like tannins and crisp acid running through the concentrated fruit and savory flavors, finishing very long with lingering earth and spice notes. At 14.8% declared alcohol, this is by no means one of the biggest wines in the Barossa, but it is most certainly one of the best. It’s an absolute joy to drink now but it is recommended readers give it 4-5 years more in bottle to soften and marry and enjoy it to 2030+. |

WS 95 (2/2006): Dark, deep and impressively focused, a massive wall of delicious fruit -- cherry, pomegranate, raspberry and red plum are among the first to appear -- tempered with refined tannins that let the flavors sail on and on through the extended finish. Best from 2007 through 2020. 1,500 cases imported. WA 94 (10/2006): From the Barossa, the inky/ruby/purple-hued 2004 Shiraz Bella’s Garden offers notions of mint, blackberries, smoke, dusty earth, and a distinctive licorice and creme de cassis character. This layered, full-bodied, powerful (all of these wines have 15-16% alcohol), stunningly complex, rich, impressive Shiraz requires 2-3 years of cellaring, and should keep for 10-15. VM 91+ (8/2006): Dark purple. Powerful red fruit scents, with strong suggestions of kirsch and white pepper. Densely packed flavors of candied strawberry and raspberry preserves are given focus and definition by bracing acids and fine tannins. This very young shiraz finishes on bright, tangy notes of pomegranate and rhubarb. I'd give this wine at least a few years in the cellar to flesh out. |

WA 92 (2/2009): The purple-colored 2006 Shiraz Bella’s Garden from Barossa Valley offers a brooding bouquet of wood smoke, pepper, damp earth, blueberry, and licorice. WA 95 (10/2006): Even better than the Harry & Edward’s Garden is the 2004 Shiraz Lily’s Garden from McLaren Vale. With this cuvee, about 25% new American oak is added to the regime of French wood. Full-bodied with stunning, dusty, loamy soil characteristics interwoven with blackberry, cassis, cherry, and plum-like fruit, this rich, pure, intense Shiraz should be consumed over the next 10-12+ years. WS 94 (2/2006): Lithe, almost elegant, with impressive depth of flavor and fine texture. The flavors center on blackberry, cherry, dried tomato, exotic spices and mineral notes as the finish sails on and on against refined tannins. Best from 2007 through 2016. 1,500 cases imported. VM 93 (7/2006): Lily'S Garden Mclaren Vale Saturated violet. Smoky, chocolate-tinged blackberry and cassis on the nose, with accents of vanilla and fresh flowers. Firm and youthful, with dark berry flavors showing impressive sweetness and depth. Gains richness and volume with aeration, taking on a candied plum quality on the finish. Fine-grained tannins come up on the back end. A great combination of structure, power and sweet fruit. This was raised in 23% new American oak hogsheads but the wood influence is subtly sweet and not at all intrusive. |

Deep and chewy, with sappy dark berry flavors and slow-building spiciness. Really fills the mouth, but this isn't exactly heavy, or too sweet. Definitely give this densely packed shiraz some age. Josh Raynolds. WA 92 (2/2009): The 2006 Shiraz Lily’s Garden comes from McLaren Vale. It reveals a complex aromatic array including balsam wood, spice box, violets, earth notes, pepper, blueberry, and blackberry. Layered and rich, it conceals enough ripe tannin to evolve for another 2-3 years. It has outstanding grip, depth, and a lengthy, pure finish. |
