WA 100 (5/2022): Marvelously complex, deeply fruited and massively concentrated yet wonderfully drinkable, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin challenges the number of superlatives that can be thrown at it. Scents of violets, tree bark, truffle, purple raspberries and blackberries all appear on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is rich, dense and velvety, and the finish shows enormous richness and length. Breathtaking stuff. JD 99 (11/2021): The tiny production 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Hommage A Jacques Perrin is the customary blend of roughly 60% Mourvèdre, 15% Grenache, and the rest Syrah and Cinsault that’s brought up in foudre. One sexy, powerful, full-bodied Southern Rhône, it sports a dense purple hue as well as a kaleidoscope-like array of blueberry, scorched earth, candied violets, pepper, and some almost northern Rhône-like meaty, smoky nuances. Full-bodied and incredibly pure, with a stacked mid-palate and ripe, supple tannins, it’s another vintage of this cuvee that will undoubtedly offer pleasure in it youth yet won’t hit prime time for a solid 7-8 years, and it should see its 30th birthday in fine form. WS 98 (2/2022): This is really packed, with a stunning core of pure violet, raspberry and plum pâte de fruit flavors that glide through seductively, belying the power that's in reserve, thanks to a well of singed alder and mesquite, worn leather and warm stone notes. The finish cuts a broad and deep swath, with the fruit showing serious staying power and superior definition. Mourvèdre, Grenache, Counoise and Syrah. Best from 2025 through 2045. 400 cases made, 210 cases imported. JS 96 (8/2021): Such beautiful black cherries, fresh earth, sage, basil and flowers on the nose, following through to a medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and an attractive, lightly chewy finish. This is very long and fresh with balance and purity. Give it five or six years to come around and show itself. |

| JD 96 (11/2021): Tons of garrigue, Provençal spice, pepper, and kirsch liqueur aromas and flavors emerge from the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Barbe Rac, a quintessential 100% Grenache revealing full-bodied richness, the ripe, concentrated style of the vintage, building tannins, and a great finish. All Grenache that was destemmed and aged 18 months concrete, it’s going to benefit from 3-5 years of bottle age and cruise for 15-20 years in cold cellars. (Drink between 2024-2045). |

| JD 97-99 (2/2022): A potential candidate for the wine of the vintage, the 2019 Hermitage is a massive, full-bodied, yet mineral-laced and undeniably classic wine from this estate. All of the components showed incredibly well, with the Le Méal offering classic sexiness, the Hermite being straight and focused, and the Bessards just as good as any Syrah out there. It shows the ripeness of the vintage, yet the purity of fruit is incredible. It’s another magical wine in an incredible series of awesome Hermitage from this family. |

| JD 98 (11/2021): Tasted out of bottle, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape is a stunning example of this estate as well as the vintage. Gorgeous kirsch, flowery incense, spice box, and garrigue-like notes define the nose, and it hits the palate with classic Clos des Papes elegance and finesse backed up by a great mid-palate, fabulous concentration, and a monster of a finish. Don’t miss this beauty. It can be enjoyed today with incredible pleasure or cellared for two decades. |

WA 93 (1/2022): The 2019 Cote Rotie La Vialliere starts off deceptively silky and fine, with charming scents of cherries and herbs and a pleasant, medium-bodied mouthfeel, then turns a bit drying and tannic on the finish. Despite its charm, it deserves some time in the cellar and should drink well through 2040. VM 96 (12/2022): Deep violet color. A hugely perfumed bouquet evokes ripe, mineral-accented black and blue fruits, licorice, exotic spices and smoky bacon. Offers deeply concentrated yet lively dark berry, kirsch, star anise and candied violet flavors that show excellent clarity and back-end thrust. The mineral and floral notes drive an impressively long and detailed finish that is given shape by steadily building, well-judged tannins. Josh Raynolds. |

WA 95+ (1/2022): The intense, tannic 2019 Cote Rotie les Grandes Places—from vines planted in 1935, 1960 and 1984—needs lots of time to come into a more pleasurable state of drinkability. It's full-bodied, concentrated, dense and tannic, but it shows promising notes of grilled plums and salted licorice on a long, long finish. It's a terrific effort, but one that will require serious patience. VM 96 (12/2022): Glass-staining ruby. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes ripe dark fruits, baking spices, smoked meat and potpourri, accompanied by building olive and licorice notes. Sappy, sharply delineated blackberry, bitter cherry, licorice and espresso flavors turn sweeter with air and pick up a smoky mineral quality that adds support and back-end cut. Chewy and spicy on the impressively persistent finish, which shows excellent detail and gripping tannins. One-third whole clusters. Josh Raynolds. |

| JD 97 (1/2022): The 2019 Gigondas Les Claux is one of the powerful yet elegant wines and offers a great bouquet of red and black fruits, graphite, crushed stone, and spice. It’s full-bodied and tannic and needs time, but the balance is spot on, the tannins are perfectly ripe and polished, and it has a gorgeous finish. Give it 2-4 years and enjoy over the following 15+ |

Hermitage Les Bessards |
$165 |

|
| |
JD 99 (8/2022): My favorite release from this estate is consistently their Les Bessards Hermitage, and their 2019 is no exception. Coming from the western part and pure broken granite soils on the west side of this magical hill, it sports a dense purple hue to go with a brilliant perfume of cassis, graphite, scorched earth, burning embers, spring flowers, and peppery herbs. Incredibly complex, layered, and nuanced, with classic Hermitage characteristics, it still stays firmly planted in the ripe, sunny, sexy vintage. Full-bodied, concentrated, and structured on the palate, it has a wealth of tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. This is pure Hermitage magic that needs to be forgotten for 4-5 years and will evolve for 20-30 years in cold cellars. Hats off to the team at Delas for another incredible wine. VM 97 (12/2022): Opaque ruby-red. A highly perfumed and expansive bouquet evokes dark berry and cherry preserves, Indian spices, olive and incense; a smoky mineral nuance emerges as the wine opens up. Fleshy and broad on the palate but surprisingly energetic as well, offering intense, mineral-driven black raspberry, boysenberry, kirsch, allspice and licorice flavors, with a suave touch of candied flowers. Finishes chewy, vibrant and impressively long, with resonating florality and youthfully firm tannins that don't detract from the wine's intense fruit. (Drink between 2029-2039) Josh Raynolds. |

| VM 93 (12/2022): Inky ruby. Dark berries, potpourri, exotic spices and a strong suggestion of smoky minerals on the expansive nose. Juicy, penetrating and finely detailed, offering densely packed, intense blackberry, cherry compote and violet flavors that are underscored by a vein of juicy acidity. Steadily building tannins add grip to an impressively long, mineral-driven finish that strongly repeats the floral and spice notes. Josh Raynolds. |

JD 94 (1/2022): The 2019 Gigondas Cuvée Florence is more concentrated and layered, and this is one of the finest vintages of this cuvée I can remember. Blackberries, sandalwood, cedary garrigue, and hints of tobacco give way to a medium to full-bodied, elegant, yet concentrated 2019 that offers silky tannins and a great finish. Give bottles a handful of years in the cellar and enjoy over the following two decades. VM 94 (1/2023): Deep ruby. Heady dark berry, cherry-cola, vanilla and floral aromas are complicated by hints of white pepper, incense and espresso. Powerful, smoke-laced blackberry compote, kirsch, mocha and fruitcake flavors show impressive depth and gain sweetness with air. This finishes sweet, broad, youthfully tannic and long, leaving behind intense dark fruit and peppery spice notes. This was aged for two years in barriques, 50% of them new. Josh Raynolds. |

JD 98-100 (12/2022): As always, the 2019 Côte Rôtie La Landonne is all Syrah that was not destemmed and will spend four years in new French oak. A wine with perfection written all over it, it's one of the most impressive barrel samples to ever pass this critic's lips. Deep purple/black-hued with a massive, full-bodied, brooding style, it has classic smoky, meaty black fruits, a touch of iron, graphite, tobacco, and pepper, building tannins, and a huge finish. This is pure brilliance in Syrah, yet as with just about every vintage here, it will require a solid decade of bottle age. WA 98-100 (2/2022): The impenetrably dark 2019 Cote Rotie La Landonne represents the essence of this fabled lieu-dit, combining peppery, herbal notions with espresso and roasted meat, all carried by ample plum and black cherry fruit. It's full-bodied, concentrated, richly tannic and long on the finish—simply a superb wine that should be flirting with perfection when it is released in a couple of years. VM 96-98 (5/2020): Powerful, spice- and mineral-accented black/blue fruit liqueur, exotic spice, olive and incense aromas show superb clarity and pick up hints of smoky bacon, mocha and candied licorice with aeration. Sweet, seamless and penetrating in the mouth, offering densely packed boysenberry, cherry liqueur, fruitcake and vanilla flavors and a touch of salty olive paste. Shows outstanding energy on the strikingly persistent finish, which features polished tannins and resonating floral, blue fruit and smoked meat qualities. Josh Raynolds. |

JD 96-98 (2/2022): A more finesse-driven, elegant example of this cuvée, the 2019 Côte Rôtie La Mouline includes a solid amount of Viognier and will see a total of four years in new French oak. Classic La Mouline notes of black raspberries, spring flowers, incense, and pepper give way to a medium to full-bodied, silky, incredibly elegant wine that will shine with only short-term cellaring. VM 96-98 (5/2020): Bright, highly perfumed blueberry, black raspberry, violet and exotic spice aromas, along with a wild touch of blood orange. Juicy and lithe on the palate, offering intense red and blue fruit flavors that stain the palate while showing little in the way of excess weight. Finishes extremely long and sweet, with a building floral note, even tannins and a late jolt of five-spice powder. Josh Raynolds. WA 94-96 (2/2022): While just as aromatic and charming on the nose—where ephemeral floral notes join ripe cherries—as previous years, the 2019 Cote Rotie La Mouline isn't quite as impressive on the palate. It's medium to full-bodied, silky and caressing, without the same power, yet it's supremely elegant. |

WA 98-100 (5/2021): Might this be the next vintage of La Chapelle to crack triple digits? Knockout aromas of crushed stone, violets, blueberries, and cassis mark the nose of the 2019 Hermitage La Chapelle, while the full-bodied palate is undeniably more intense and powerful than the more elegant 2018. Rich and velvety, it coats the mouth with dark fruit and creamy-textured espresso, yet retains remarkable length and licorice-derived peppery freshness on the finish. Wow! JD 98-98+ (11/2020): Compared to the La Maison Bleue, the 2019 Hermitage La Chapelle is more closed, tight, and primary, with a focused, full-bodied style that carries impressive black and blue fruits, graphite, bloody meat, and ample minerality. Structured and tannic, yet wonderfully concentrated and pure, it's not for those seeking instant gratification, but it’s another stunning Hermitage in the making. |

| JD 95-98 (2/2022): Schedule to be bottled shortly after my visit, the 2019 Côte Rôtie has gorgeous, floral nuances that give way to more peppery, meaty, gamey notes that are the hallmark of this wonderful estate. Medium to full-bodied, it has considerable elegance and finesse on the palate (Jean-Paul compares this to his 2001 and 2007), silky tannins, and a beautiful finish. It’s going to have some up-front appeal as well as a broad drink window. |

| JD 96 (12/2022): The star of the show is the 2019 Côte Rôtie Terrasses, which can thought of as a hypothetical mix of the 2017 and 2018, with perhaps a nod to the 2017. Both red and black fruits, peppery herbs, dried flowers, graphite, and a beautiful sense of minerality define the bulk of the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied on the palate, with fine, building tannins, terrific overall balance, and a great finish. From a vintage that produced ripe, tannic wines, this stays balanced and pure and is loaded with potential. |

| JD 98+ (11/2021): I was able to taste the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvee Chaupin on two occasions, rating it one point higher on one of those as well. Incredible notes of red and black fruits, violets, scorched earth, ground pepper, and Provençal garrigue notes define the nose, and it’s a darker, richer, slightly more powerful wine than usual, while still showing the inherent elegance and finesse this cuvee always shows. Give bottles 2-3 years and enjoy over the following 15-20. Don’t miss it! |

| JD 96-99 (10/2020): Lovers of brilliant Châteauneuf du Pape should snatch up bottles of the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes, which comes mostly from the northeastern sector of the appellation, from the La Janasse lieu-dit as well as from the La Crau lieu-dit. Revealing a deeper ruby/plum color to go with a spectacular bouquet of peppery garrigue, smoked meats, blackcurrants, black cherries, and truffly earth, this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness and has no hard edges, with building tannins and another blockbuster of a finish. While this wine is always rich and powerful, it’s the level of elegance and purity that really sets it apart in this vintage. Give bottles 2-3 years in the cellar and enjoy over the following 20+ years or more. |

JS 95 (2/2022): This youthful Chateauneuf has a very complex nose of graphite, raw meat and lilies. With aeration the black-cherry note steadily grows in intensity. Bold, leathery and earthy palate with fine tannins that build steadily on at the extremely long and straight mineral finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2024. WA 95-97 (5/2022): The 2019 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Réservée looks set to rival the best examples of this bottling. Made up of approximately 80% Grenache, with 6% Syrah, 4% Mourvèdre and smaller amounts of other permitted varieties, it's impressively complex on the nose, with scents of black cherries, blackberries and black olives, plus mysterious wafts of violets and garrigue. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, it finishes long and velvety, a sure-fire bet for cellaring. |

VM 94 (12/2022): Deep violet color. Ripe blackberry and cherry on the floral- and spice-accented nose. Shows fine definition and appealing sweetness on the palate, offering juicy dark fruit and floral pastille flavors and a peppery overtone. Closes long and lively, with repeating cherry and spice notes and even tannins that lend subtle grip. (Drink between 2024-2032). Josh Raynolds. JD 93 (2/2022): Moving to the 2019s from bottle, the 2019 Côte Rôtie Ampodium offers lots of peppery herbs, flowers, bacon fat, and sweet black raspberry fruit in a medium to full-bodied, meaty, straight-up classic Côte Rôtie style. It’s well worth seeking out as a multi-bottle purchase, as it will offer loads of pleasure over the coming 15 years. (Drink between 2022-2037). |

JD 97 (2/2022): The 2019 Côte Rôtie Côte Blonde is as seamless and silky as they come and is just a quintessential Côte Rôtie. Black raspberries, flowers, ground pepper, and subtle meatiness all emerge from this beauty, and it’s full-bodied, has remarkable tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. It certainly offers pleasure today, but smart money will hide bottles for 4-5 years. It will knock your socks off over the following two decades. VM 97 (12/2022): Opaque ruby. Intensely perfumed, spice- and mineral-accented blueberry, kirsch, fruitcake and floral aromas are complemented by suggestions of incense and botanical herbs. Shows superb clarity and mineral thrust to its sweet black and blue fruit, cola, violet pastille and spicecake flavors, which deftly meld depth and vivacity. Finishes extremely long and smooth, with polished tannins and reverberating blue fruit, mineral and floral notes. Josh Raynolds. |

JD 98+ (2/2022): More black raspberry, camphor, graphite, peppered meat, and powdered rock notes emerge from the 2019 Côte Rôtie Le Vialliere, another flat-out incredible wine from this family. Much straighter and more focused than the more opulent La Landonne, it has a dense mid-palate, ultra-fine tannins, full-bodied richness, and perfect balance. It’s singular, heavenly wine that needs to be forgotten for 5-7 years, and it should see its 30th birthday in fine form. VM 97 (12/2022): Glass-staining ruby color. Smoke- and mineral-accented cherry and blackberry scents show superb clarity, and licorice and olive nuances build in the glass. Gently sweet, penetrating dark berry, bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors are underscored by a smoky mineral element and pick up an exotic spice nuance with air. Fleshes out slowly on the fabulously long well-delineated finish, which is framed by solid (but in no way severe) tannins that blend very slowly into the wine's deep, dark fruit. Note that there is no 2020 bottling of this wine as there was too little quantity; thus, it was all blended into the Ampodium, much to that wine's benefit. Josh Raynolds. |

WA 92-94 (10/2020): Deeper and more concentrated than the 2018, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape is as impressive as I can remember this cuvee ever being. Dark in hue, overflowing with dark fruit, full-bodied and velvety in texture, with a long, licorice-tinged finish, this looks very promising. JD 91-93 (10/2020): Moving to the 2019 reds, the classic 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape offers a textbook Clos Saint Jean perfume of kirsch liqueur, blackcurrants, toasted spices, graphite, and peppery garrigue. This carries to a medium to full-bodied Châteauneuf with beautiful tannins, a great mid-palate, and just an overall sense of balance paired with plenty of richness and length. Beautifully done, it’s going to offer 10-15 years of prime drinking. |

JD 97-99 (10/2020): Always the most elegant cuvee in the lineup from this team, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Combe Des Fous checks in as a normal blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and the rest Vacqueyras and Cinsault. It just screams Provence on the nose, with loads of blackcurrants, lavender, white chocolate, ground pepper, and assorted Asian spice-like aromas and flavors all jumping from the glass. With full-bodied richness, a multi-dimensional, layered mouthfeel, building tannins, and a great finish, this is another beautiful, seamless, elegant yet also incredibly powerful wine from this estate that will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and keep for 15-20 years or more. WA 94-96 (10/2020): Plummy and chocolaty yet remarkably vibrant, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape La Combe des Fous comes across as richer and more powerful than the 2018. I'm not sure that's a good thing in this cuvee, as it's full-bodied, dense and a bit chunky at the moment—certainly enormously impressive, but without the elegance of the previous vintage. It will be interesting to see how it compares once it's in the bottle. |

JD 97-100 (10/2020): The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Sanctus Sanctorum is going to be one of the wines of the vintage. All Grenache sourced from a single parcel in the La Crau lieu-dit and raised all in demi-muids, it sports a more ruby/purple hue that’s not completely opaque and has an incredible bouquet of kirsch liqueur, ripe blackcurrants, scorched earth. graphite, ground pepper, and assorted cured meats. With an incredibly singular character, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness and carries incredible power and richness, yet it nevertheless still glides over the palate with no sensation of weight or heaviness, ultra-fine tannins, and a remarkable sense of purity and elegance. This is another magical Grenache from this team. It’s going to benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and knock your socks off over the following 20 years or more. WA 96-98 (10/2020): The 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Sanctus Sanctorum—a 100% Grenache cuvee (from vines planted in 1905) matured in new demi-muids—looks to have the concentrated fruit to handle the oak better than the 2018. Dark and intense, it delivers waves of purple berries and black cherries, barely touched by vanilla and cedar. It's full-bodied and rich, and although the wood tannins do leave an impression, it's a gentle one relative to the wine's overall profile. While it may not quite equal the near-perfect 2016, it's close. |

| JD 100 (11/2021): Lastly, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Reserve is another magical wine, and I might have rated this cuvee a perfect score more than any other Southern Rhône. Unquestionably in the same realm as the 2017, 2016, 2010, 2005, 2003, and 2001, it has an incredible, full-bodied, massive style that somehow stays perfectly balanced, with flawless integration of its fruit, tannins, acidity, and alcohol. Lots of red, blue, and black fruits, loamy earth, Asian spice, licorice, and violet nuances emerge from the glass, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, building yet polished tannins, and a great, great finish. It’s a sexier, more opulent wine than the Les Hauts-Lieux release yet has the same perfect tannins that are so rare to find in the vintage. This required at least 4-5 years of bottle age and will drink brilliantly for 20-25+ years. |

| JD 94+ (11/2021): The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape is ruby/purple-hued and has the classic translucent color of the domaine. It's more precise and focused than the Telegramme and will need more time, but it offers a complex, gorgeous bouquet of red and black fruits, crushed stone, wild fennel, and ground pepper. Pure, medium to full-bodied, and elegant, do your best to hide bottles for 5-7 years and it's going to keep for two decades. |
