| WA 89 (3/2018): The 1998 Le Pergole Torte offers strong floral notes and evident notes of oxidation. This vintage is not as full or generous as the 1997 expression. But it does show a graceful and silky disposition with rose hip and dried violets. This was a cool growing season that produced a compact and thinly textured mouthfeel as a result. If you have a bottle, I would not suggest waiting much longer. The 1998 vintage is nearing the end of its drinking window. |

VM 97 (7/2022): The 2019 Le Pergole Torte is all class and refinement. At the same time, the 2019 is quite reticent at this stage. In this tasting, the Pergole Torte comes across as more refined and aromatically expressive than the Montevertine, with lovely brightness driving the red berry fruit. Elegant and sophisticated, the 2019 is a wine to treasure for the next several decades. Time in the glass brings out the floral upper register and red Sangiovese fruit of Pergole Torte. WA 97 (2/2023): Holding back initially, this wine simply needs more time in bottle, and I have adjusted the drinking window accordingly. The 2019 Le Pergole Torte is a long-term proposition showing initial stirrings of tart cherry fruit, plum, licorice, tobacco and crushed stone. There is a pretty floral tone of violet or rosemary flower even now. Winemaking takes this special selection of 100% Sangiovese though cement and Allier and Slavonian oak. The balanced acidity stands out nicely. |

VM 98+ (7/2024): The 2021 Le Pergole Torte is a real stunner. Rich, deep and beautifully layered in the glass, the 2021 is captivating from the very first taste. In bottle, this is quite a bit more reticent than it was as a barrel sample, which, in my view, is a positive. Even so, readers should be prepared to cellar the 2021 for a number of years at a minimum. (Drink between 2028-2046). Antonio Galloni.
WA 97 (7/2024): Beautifully saturated and rich in terms of complexity (but not in extraction), the Montevertine 2021 Le Pergole Torte remains focused and elegantly streamlined with a very bright-red cherry element that defines this classic vintage. There are tart fruit flavors to close, followed by firm but silky tannins. A hint of the skins also comes through on the bouquet and adds a little more weight and substance. This wine (which is worked in cement vats, oak cask and Allier barrique) finishes with polished slate-like mineral nuances. |

VM 95 (2/2019): The 2015 Montevertine has closed down massively since it was bottled in February 2018. Beams of tannin dominate over the radiant fruit that was much more expressive when the wine was in barrel. Readers will have to be patient with the 2015, as it needs at least a few years in bottle to show the natural richness of the vintage that was so evident when the wine was in barrel. This should be an especially cellar worthy 2015. Antonio Galloni.
WA 94-96 (3/2018): This beautiful wine grabs your attention from the start. Tasted as a barrel sample, the 2015 Montevertine opens to a rich and beautifully saturated color. The wine's density is more extracted and dense, and the aromas are abundantly generous and opulent as a result. Yet, all that excess is carefully contained within the elegant and nuanced approach so perfectly expressed by this historic estate. Blue flower definition with violets and lavender segue to dark fruit, spice and white pepper. The blend is 90% Sangiovese with smaller parts Canaiolo and Colorino. The wine is fermented in cement and then ages in oak for two years. Montevertine sees fruit sourced from the same vineyard that makes Pian del Ciampolo, but fruit here represents a first selection. |

WA 95+ (7/2024): Made with mostly Sangiovese plus tiny parts Canaiolo and Colorino, the 2021 Montevertine reveals a very tight textural approach with pinpoint aromas of blue currant, iris root and red rose. The wine takes a moment or two to open, but it does succeed in showing its full bouquet in little time. Montevertine remains elegantly tight and streamlined in terms of mouthfeel.
VM 95+ (7/2024): The 2021 Montevertine is a huge, potent wine. Dark, rich and explosive, the 2021 possesses tremendous depth, maybe too much. Readers will have to be patient. The inclusion of new vineyards in the Docciole sector have altered Montevertine; it’s now a darker, more virile wine from mostly younger vines, in relative terms. In bottle, I find it a bit stylistically different from the house style. (Drink between 2028-2041). Antonio Galloni. |

Mocha, espresso and sage are some of the many notes that add complexity. Hints of white truffle, lavender, smoke and licorice are laced into the exotic, racy finish. In 2011, Solaia has a dollop more of Cabernet Franc in the blend, added to give the wine a touch of freshness. Ripe and flashy to the core, the 2011 needs time to lose some of its youthful exuberance. At times, the 2011 could be easily mistaken for a wine from Napa Valley, such is its intensity. |

VM 95 (3/2015): As it usually is, the 2011 Barolo San Rocco is the darkest and richest of the Azelia Barolos, but it too is quite polished in this vintage. Dark red cherries, licorice, spices and new leather flesh out in a Barolo that shows the depth of Serralunga, but with gorgeous mid-palate pliancy, silky tannins and soft contours for a young Barolo. Here, too, the wine's balance is incredibly alluring, especially since the San Rocco has a history of drinking well throughout its entire life. Antonio Galloni.
JS 93 (9/2015): A young Barolo with floral, cherry and citrus aromas that follow through to a full body, firm tannins and a tangy, lively finish. This is an energetic young Barolo that needs time to soften in the bottle. Drink in 2016.
WA 92 (1/2017): The 2011 Barolo San Rocco shows focused intensity with a pretty array of varietal characteristics. Boasting the best of Nebbiolo, the wine shows dark fruit nuances with smoke, tobacco, tar and black olive. This expression also offers lasting structure with evident tannic firmness and long persistence. |

WA 93 (8/2017): 2011 Barolo Riserva Vignolo is a dark and succulent expression that showcases the characteristics of the warm vintage. The bouquet puts forth a compelling set of dark fruit characteristics with Morello cherry, dried blackberry, mocha and delicate accents of sweet spice. The vineyard team was careful to keep the clusters under the shade of the canopy for as long as possible during the summer months to prevent the grapes from ripening too fast or bleaching their color pigments. The results are very nice indeed. |

Over the last few years consulting oenologist Emiliano Falsini has moved towards a gentler approach in the cellar, which includes, among other things, lowering temperatures during fermentation. WA 95 (6/2016): The Domenico Clerico 2011 Barolo Aeroplan Servaj boasts an almost unreal level of richness and intensity. You feel the heat and power of the vintage, but the wine never feels jammy or flat. In fact, it moves across the palate with elegance, power and an impressive sense of balance. At its core, this Barolo reveals a tightly knit textural fabric based on good acidic integration and smoothly polished tannins. This wine shows no rough edges and it promises a long bottle evolution. |

| VM 97 (12/2015): Conterno's 2011 Barolo Francia lifts from the glass with the most finessed, exquisite aromatics imaginable. Over the last decade, Monfortino has not been made three times; 2003, 2007 and 2009, all warm vintages for Piedmont. In each of those years, the Francia was a big, racy Barolo. But the 2011 is totally different. Readers will find a sublime, aromatically lifted Barolo that has virtually nothing in common with 2003, 2007 or 2009. Freshly cut flowers, mint, hard candy and a hint of vanillin are some of the notes that are woven together. In 2011, the Francia is a Barolo of nearly indescribable class. As a reminder, in 2011 Roberto Conterno did not bottle his flagship Barolo Riserva Monfortino. The French oak is also totally fused with the fruit in a way I have not seen before. In keeping with the style of the vintage, the Colonia is ripe and opulent to the core. JS 95 (9/2014): This is so layered and complex with dark chocolate, mineral, wet stone and black cherry character. So much fruit and polished tannins in this wine yet tight and composed. It needs another three to four years to completely open and show what great quality it truly has.
VM 94 (9/2014): Black stone fruits, smoke, tobacco, incense and sweet spices jump from the glass in the 2011 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo. The 2011 is going to need a few years for the baby fat to melt away. Today the flavors are ripe, dark and resonant, while the tannins are quite silky, but the best is yet to come. Even with all of its richness, the 2011 clocks in with acidity above 6%, which is virtually unheard of for a wine with this much dry extract, but, then again, we are talking about Sangiovese.
WA 94 (10/2014): The plush and ripe 2011 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo shows a Type-A personality with bold nuances of black cherry, sweet espresso and baking spice. It is comprised of 95% Sangiovese and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and ages for two years in French barrel (half the wine) as well as two months in large oak cask. The opulence and richness definitely stand out (the label registers 15% alcohol). Sweet tannins and rich extraction make up the finish. |

WA 95 (10/2014): The 2011 Flaccianello della Pieve is 100% Sangiovese aged 24 months in new French oak and two months in large oak cask. I’m not sure how Fontodi does it, but this edition of Flaccianello is simply beautiful. It is a seamless expression with lingering tones of red cherry, coffee, spice, truffle and red rose that flow harmoniously into unison. In the mouth, the wine shows great opulence and textural richness that is pushed forward by the stylistic softness of the tannins and the wine’s inner freshness. Pretty menthol tones appear on the finish. Drink: 2015-2030.
JS 95 (9/2014): The blackberry, currant, nutmeg and chocolate aromas follow through to a full body, with velvety tannins and lots of savory fruit. Some balsamic and citrus fruit underneath it all. Needs a little time to soften. Pure sangiovese. From organically grown grapes. Better in 2016.
VM 94 (9/2014): Violets, crushed flowers, licorice, cloves and menthol wrap around the palate in the 2011 Flaccianello. A soft, seamless wine, the 2011 retains gorgeous freshness within the context of the year. Today, the Flaccianello is more expressive than the Sorbo, but it was also bottled two months earlier. This is another wine with off the charts levels of both polyphenols and acidity. |

The wine opens to a light garnet color and immediate fruit tones that veer towards the jammy side with sun-dried strawberry and raspberry. It shows a good level of freshness and acidity to counter the warmer tendencies of the bouquet. The tannins deliver a smooth, silky quality and the wine starts to show pretty aromas of wet earth and black truffle after a few minutes in the glass. Drink: 2015-2030. |

The wine successfully, and somewhat magically, turns the tables on the overdone exuberance of the warm vintage and the natural heft that is inherent to Serralunga d'Alba. It does a great job of reining in all that power and transforming it into streamlined elegance instead. The wine opens to a dark and penetrating color and an immediately expressive bouquet. Thick layers of dark fruit, iron-rich earth, balsam herb, Darjeeling tea, dried ginger and cherry cola rise from the bouquet. The wine's Falletto signature is very strong. VM 94 (6/2023): The 2011 Barolo from Bartolo Mascarello is such a surprise. Bright, translucent red, the 2011 immediately impresses with its captivating freshness and precision. There’s so much vibrancy. Given the warm, dry year, I was expecting to see a Barolo with some early signs of maturity, but the 2011 is incredibly young, not to mention an absolute delight. Time in the glass does start to reveal a bit less polish in the tannins relative to the very finest vintages, but that is expected in a very challenging vintage. This is a terrific showing. WA 94 (6/2015): The 2011 Barolo is a very expressive wine with more determination and muscle than you usually get in the wines of Bartolo Mascarello. The bouquet opens to plush flavors of red fruit and cherry with grilled herb, tobacco and mineral delineation. Its structure is yielding and round and the finish is ripe with soft fruit flavors. Make no mistake, it doles out complexity and an ethereal sense of balsam herb, cola and licorice that is the hallmark of this historic estate with a tiny garage winery in the town of Barolo. The alcohol reading here is 14.5% compared to 14% in the 2010 vintage. |

VM 93 (3/2015): Oberto's 2011 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata captures all the signatures of this site from its floral, perfumed aromatics to red-fleshed fruit and silky, polished tannins, all delivered with the feminine sensuality that is the truest essence of what Rocche is all about. Freshly cut roses, mint and vivid red berries grace the super-expressive finish. In my view, Rocche is Oberto's flagship. The 2011 has come together quite nicely since I last tasted in barrel. VM 97 (9/2014): Another dark, intense wine, the 2011 Ornellaia boasts superb depth, richness and power. Here, too, the 2011 has tightened up quite a bit over the last six months. Today, the searing tannins are quite prominent, giving the 2011 an element of gravitas and muscle that argues for cellaring. How long? I am not sure, but the 2011 is built for the long haul. Savory herbs, new leather, menthol and cloves resonate on the huge finish.
JS 94 (10/2014): This shows incredible concentration with dark-berry, dark-chocolate, mint and rosemary character. Full body with a superb depth of fruit and polished tannins. It's chewy but caressing. This needs at least four or five years to come around. Powerful and intense. Yet it remains fresh and bright.
WA 94 (10/2014): The 2011 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia lives up to the legacy of this important wine, thanks to its extreme intensity and its skillfully crafted bouquet. The excellent quality of fruit stands clear, despite the heat of the vintage, with pristine notes of dark cherry, exotic spice and chocolate. This expression of Ornellaia is composed of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot. The results are nothing short of exuberant and this vintage will reward both those who decided to drink it early, as well as those who have the patience to wait. The only slight ruffle in this otherwise gorgeous presentation is the 2011 tannin that feels a touch aggressive. For that reason, its probably better to put the wine aside in your cellar. |

VM 93+ (2/2016): The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is rich, sensual and inviting. Wonderfully open-knit and polished, the 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is one of the most intriguing wines of the year. High-toned aromatics, with a touch of volatile acidity, give the wine much of its unique personality. Macerated cherries, licorice, hard candy new leather and mint are all pushed forward. Readers should expect a somewhat eccentric Brunello. I have seen Brunellos with elevated volatile acidity develop into spectacular wines with years in bottle, but readers should know what they are getting into. Antonio Galloni.
WA 93 (3/2016): The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino offers an immediate sense of generosity and openness that makes it attractive on first impact. In this regard, 2011 is very different from the slow-to-reveal-itself 2010 vintage that proceeds it. Bold tones of dark cherry, plum, spice and resin rise to the top with enthusiasm and intensity. The wine holds back nothing. It shows a velvety texture that is rich and enduring. All the while, this Brunello remains faithful to its time honored traditions and its territorial roots.

WA 95 (3/2016): Il Poggione has done a terrific job with its 2011 Brunello di Montalcino. The wine is soft, yielding and charged with a velvety and smooth texture. It is deeply redolent of dark berry, black cherry, spice, leather and tobacco. The wine's sunny personality never feels flat or too dense. In fact, the wine offers a very tight and steely backbone that gives the wine stature and strength. This is one of my favorite Brunellos from the 2011 vintage.
VM 94 (2/2016): A dark, powerful wine, the 2011 Brunello di Montalcino offers notable depth and intensity. Il Poggione's 2011 is one of the richest, most powerful wines of the year. Black cherry, plum, lavender, cloves and new leather are some of the first nuances that open up. With time in the glass, the 2011 becomes more lifted, as brighter red cherry and raspberry-infused flavors gradually release. This is a rare 2011 that demands at least a good few years in the cellar. VM 97 (9/2015): The 2011 d'Alceo is fascinating to taste next to the Sammarco, as it is much more open-knit, silky and expressive. Cherry jam, pomegranate, spice and new leather flesh out in the glass. The integration of fruit, tannin and acidity is further along than in the Sammarco. The 2011 d'Alceo should open up pretty early, which should be welcome news to readers cellaring some of the more tannic vintages. JS 97 (8/2015): This is very firm and dense with fantastic structure and a superb depth of fruit and silky tannins. Full body showing a core of ripe fruit featuring currants and blackberries. Minerals and fresh mushrooms to add. Better in 2018.
WA 95 (10/2015): The 2011 D'Alceo is a stunning blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon with 15% Petit Verdot. The bouquet is perfumed and enticing with dark rose, cherry fruit, spice, leather, cola, grilled herb and so much more. Fruit comes from a six-hectare single vineyard (whereas fruit for the Sanmarco represents a special selection from various vineyards.) The intensity and purity is what sets this wine part. Both are impeccable. In the mouth, D'Alceo feels long, linear and meaningful. Castello dei Rampolla practices biodynamic farming. |

WA 93 (6/2015): The 2011 Barolo Brunate shows dazzle and pizzazz with a good sense of density and structure at the back. Its tight, svelte texture wraps smoothly over the palate. Bright aromas of cherry, dark fruit, balsam herb, rosemary oil, cola and crushed mineral appear with clear definition and energy. Because of the warm vintage, this wine went into bottle six months earlier than average to allow for a longer evolution in glass.
VM 92 (3/2015): The 2011 Barolo Brunate has finally begun to awaken from its post-bottling slumber. Surprisingly open for a young Rinaldi Barolo, the 2011 is round, spherical and supple. Leather, smoke, menthol and tobacco wrap around a plump, juicy core of dark Brunate fruit. The 2011 is almost shockingly accessible. The breadth and creaminess of Brunate is evident, but at the same time, the Brunate is also clearly marked by the ripeness of the vintage. It will be interesting to see if the pedigree of Brunate comes to the fore with further time in bottle. At this point, the Barolo Tre Tine is fresher and better balanced. |

VM 94 (9/2014): The 2011 Carbonaione is another gorgeous wine in a line of successful vintages that goes all the way back to 1992. Blackberry jam, cloves, menthol, licorice, new leather and sweet spices flesh out in a voluptuous, racy wine that beautifully expresses the personality of the vintage. Today, the 2011 is rich, layered and voluptuous to the core. It is also incredibly primary. Readers who want to experience the 2011 in its full glory will have to wait at least a few years, but there is little question the 2011 is a worthy follow up to the epic 2010.
VM 91 (10/2014): (100% sangiovese): Inky ruby. A perfumed violet nuance complicates dark plum and blueberry syrup on the enticing nose, with red fruit notes emerging with aeration. Dense, rich and suave, with harmonious acidity providing clarity and cut to the very deep red berry and cocoa flavors. Finishes pure and very long, with silky tannins. This develops more of a red berry profile with aeration. An Outstanding wine, but I would have scored it even higher had it reminded me more of sangiovese. |

VM 94 (10/2014): An overachiever in this vintage, the 2011 Barbaresco Cottà is one of the most refined wines I have tasted from this site, where the wines are usually much more overt and powerful in style. Sweet floral and spice notes meld into a core of dark red and black hued stone fruits, tobacco, smoke and new leather. The characteristic pliant, juicy Cottà fruit is there, but it is complemented by expressive floral overtones. There is a pure immediacy to the Cottà that is impossible to miss.
JS 93 (12/2014): The aromas of flowers, ripe fruits and citrus are extremely enticing. Full body with firm, silky tannins and a dried-strawberry, light cedar and nutmeg aftertaste. Better in 2016 when the tannins soften.
WA 89 (6/2015): The 2011 Barbaresco Cottá shows more obvious oak and toasted spice with dark layers of blackberry, Morello cherry and cola at the back. Stylistically speaking, this expression delivers a modern approach with bold lines and opulent contours. The balance is there in terms of acidity and tannins. |

VM 95 (10/2014): The 2011 Barbaresco Currà is fabulous. Rich, deep and expressive, the 2011 impresses for its nearly seamless personality and exceptional balance. Here, the warm vintage has softened some of the more angular contours that are often present. Sweet floral and spice notes resonate on the finish, but above all else, the Currà is a wine of texture. Over the last few years, the Currà is the most improved wine at Sottimano, so it's hardly a surprise it is often the last Barbaresco poured at the estate. I tasted the 2011 twice from bottle; it was compelling on both occasions. Readers should not miss the 2011, as it is fabulous!
JS 92 (3/2015): Extremely aromatic with dried strawberry and rose petals. This red is full-bodied and shows dusty tannins and a chocolate-powder and dried-berry aftertaste. Better in 2016 when the tannins soften.
WA 92 (6/2015): From a warm vintage, the 2011 Barbaresco Currá exhibits a bold and fleshy style with dark fruit aromas of blackcurrant and plum. In keeping with Sottimano's house style, the wine never feels heavy or bulky despite the summer heat. Instead, it shows elegance and nuanced tones of spice, blue flowers and white truffle. It wraps around the palate with grace and power. Barbaresco Currá does a great job of presenting the elegant side of the 2011 vintage. |

It delivers volume, intensity and rich texture. This Sassicaia is a wine of enormous craftsmanship.

This silky, very graceful Sassicaia might not be as long-lived as the most famous vintages of the past but is irresistible owing to its impeccable balance. “Lovely” is the word that dominated my tasting note. |

| WA 95 (10/2009): Donnhoff's 2007 Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Auslese leads with an unusually floral aromatic display, and the palate impression is so honeyed you'd think it were Bienenauslese (selected by bees). There is remarkable density here, with site-typical layering of flowers, orchard fruits, citrus, berries, along with smoky, peat-like, stony mineral suggestions that become more prominent as the wine takes on air. The finish is almost luxuriantly rich by Hermannshohle standards. But I am sure this wine will find more to say with time and not fall silent for 30 years or more. |

VM 94 (2/2012): Rich golden yellow. Luscious aromas of candied pineapple, lemon oil and acacia honey on a bed of smoky botrytis. The succulent weight of papaya fruit is levitated by crisp minerality on the palate. A fine balance of creamy fruit and herbal spice on the seductive, very long finish.
WA 93 (12/2011): Smoky black tea wafts over quince preserves and almost overripe pear on the nose and the glossy, subtly creamy, yet bright palate of Donnhoff's 2010 Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Auslese Gold Capsule. Nut paste and a savory smoked meat dimension contribute complexity to this lusciously lingering Auslese, but one that " like its Brucke counterpart' does not capture the dynamic spirit of the 2010 vintage to quite the extent of its Spatlese siblings, and would benefit (might well, in time) from a bit more focus. Still, this will impress regardless for at least two decades. |

| VM 95 (6/2020): Like its Brücke counterpart, this Auslese reflects genuinely botrytis-free grapes, said Dönnhoff, but ones that were too numerous and too high in sugar to use elsewhere, “and certainly not in the Grosses Gewächs, which would then have ended up with 14% alcohol.” Sea breeze on the nose intimates the sweet-saline savor of raw scallop that emerges on this wine’s lusciously lingering, mouthwateringly umami-rich finish. White peach and quince preserves feature throughout, reinforced on the soothingly creamy palate by nougat-like nut essences. There is an animating, juicy fresh-fruit aspect as well, and a wonderful sense of both focus and transparency to stony and ore-like nuances. (Drink between 2020-2050). Dvid Schildknecht. |

WA 96 (10/2009): Gardenia, peony, and resinous herbs in the nose of Donnhoff's 2007 Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Spatlese give way to a palpably extract-rich palate of vibratory intensity, suffused with stony, saline, and tactile suggestions of mineral matter, yet at the same time rich orchard fruits. If the Krotenpfuhl was painted with water colors, the medium here is definitely oil, exhibiting both dynamic and intricate brush work as well as dense layering. This masterpiece - picked simultaneously with the corresponding Grosses Gewachs - was only beginning to show its depth in the spring and needed almost six months in bottle to really shine forth. Take as long as fate permits you to savor this; I can't imagine it disappointing a quarter century or more from now.
VM 93+ (2/2009): Tantalizing aromas of papaya, sweet herbs and incense. Discreet but intense black cherry fruit rises from the mid-palate, accompanied by brilliant acidity. Animated and finely spiced, with a deep, long finish. I may be underrating this. |

| WA 93 (1/2015): Only made in vintages with a high ripeness (a pre-selection of the GG) the 2013 Norheimer Dellchen Riesling Auslese offers ripe and shortly cooked apple as well as pineapple aromas along with some volcanic rocks on the nose leading to a sweet, rich and piquant Riesling which shows its great talents not before the finish which is pure and salty but again sweet and sensual. The finish displays citric flavors and black bread but there is no heaviness or botrytis opulence at all in this wine. |

| WA 94 (12/2011): Picked-out, like its Hermannshohle counterpart, in the last, early-November days of harvest, Donnhoff's 2010 Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Auslese gold capsule was, he estimates, "perhaps 50% affected by botrytis, and dry botrytis, no mere rot." Candied lime rind and marzipan; lily and honeysuckle; white peach and salted caramel inform this wine's haunting nose and rich yet buoyant palate, with the mouthwatering savor that characterized the corresponding Spatlese undiminished. This needs some time in bottle to better focus, and it will be interesting to see whether it develops more sense of cut and brightness. But it's already irresistible, and almost sure to prove worth following for a quarter century or more. |

| WA 96 (2/2013): High-toned, distillate-like herbal extracts along with ripe fresh strawberry, apple and quince inform the scintillating nose and electrical charged palate of Donnhoff’s 2011 Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Spatlese. “We were able to just keep waiting on this site," he explains, “so that even this lightest wine from the Brucke was picked only in the last days of (regular) harvest." Hints of pits and seed, along with black tea, nut oils, zesty citrus, and myriad mineral impingements add to a sense of quickening that goes well beyond mere invigoration in this gem’s strikingly persistent, shimmeringly vibrant finish. I was left with salivary glands palpitating and arms covered in gooseflesh. It will probably be hard to resist such a wine at any point over the next quarter century, but those with the requisite remaining life expectancy should make an effort to defer for the duration the pleasure of at least the last bottle or two. |

WA 99 (10/2009): The over-ripe pear and quince featured in other nobly sweet wines of this collection are very much present in Donnhoff's 2007 Schlossbockelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Beerenauslese, along with aromas of distilled gentian, gardenia, lemon oil, freshly baked bread, and white truffle. The intensity of inner-mouth perfume here - orchard fruit, floral, and herbal distillates - is nearly beyond belief. Pear nectar, quince preserves, apple jelly, liquid gardenia, brown spices, and a certain saline and smoky suggestions of things mineral inform a finish of trance-inducing duration. This amazing elixir - harvested largely in the Turmchen section of the site - should be worthy of 40 years cellaring. When Donnhoff laughingly referred to this as the year of Felsenberg, he was not in fact kidding, nor was he referring just to the sheer number of bottlings!
