VM 90 (8/2003): Full red-ruby color. Fragrant, wild and exotic, with distinctive viognier-scented aromas of apricot and peach blossom over spicy white pepper, cassis and raspberry. Silky, velvety and long, bursting with briary black fruits. Its sumptuous and fleshy mid-palate culminates in a lingering, savory, earthy finish of concentration and balance.
WA 89 (8/2003): Aged in used French oak casks for 18 months prior to being bottled unfiltered, the 2001 Descendant is a 1,000 case blend of 92% Shiraz and 8% Viognier cropped at approximately 1.5 tons of fruit per acre. This spectacular Australian red offers an aromatic smorgasbord of honeysuckle intermixed with blackberry and creme de cassis liqueurs, licorice, coffee, and spice. There is fabulous fruit purity, tremendous intensity, and great balance with flavor, power, and elegance all combined into a riveting example of Barossa Valley wine. It should drink well for 10-12 years. |

WA 95 (2/2009): The Shiraz for the 2006 The Descendant is sourced from a single vineyard and co-fermented with 8% Viognier. It was aged for 18 months in seasoned French oak. Opaque purple-colored, it emits an expressive, sexy perfume of violets, wood smoke, black pepper, espresso, blueberry, and chocolate. Full-bodied, on the palate, this voluptuous effort has great concentration with a noticeable uplift from the Viognier, tons of spicy black fruits, enough ripe tannin to evolve for a decade, and 60-second finish. It should provide pleasure from 2016 through 2036.
VM 93+ (10/2008): Inky violet. Powerfully scented, brooding aromas of boysenberry, cherry compote, licorice and smoky minerals; aeration brings up brighter black raspberry and blackberry qualities, which carry onto the palate. Broad and deeply concentrated, presenting a seductive array of sweet dark berry liqueur flavors and a late jolt of tangy minerals. Clings tenaciously to the palate and finishes with lingering blackberry and candied plum flavors. This really deserves some patience. |

WA 95 (10/2002): The 2000 The Factor (1,000 cases) has benefited from the fact that Powell decided not to produce a Run Rig in 2000. It is a compelling wine of great richness, multiple dimensions, and glorious levels of blackberry liqueur-like fruit intermixed with creme de cassis, melted licorice, espresso, and leather. Sweet, expansive, and opulent, it is a lusty, hedonistic, mouth-staining Shiraz that should drink well for 10-15 years.
VM 91 (8/2003): Deep red-ruby. Leathery, herbal, spicy, slightly evolved aromas of small black and red berries, with restrained cedar and vanilla oak notes, licorice, musk and clove. Medium to full in weight, with tannins that are firm but not aggressive. A vibrant core of slightly jammy small berry and plum flavor coats the length of the palate, while the oak is understated and supportive. Finishes spicy and long. Should reach its peak in two to five years. |

WA 96 (8/2003): Although the 2001 Shiraz The Armagh will not be released for another year, readers should keep an eye out for it as it is a profound Shiraz. It boasts an opaque purple color in addition to a tremendously rich bouquet of melted licorice intermixed with scents of camphor, blackberry liqueur, and new saddle leather. Massive and full-bodied, yet impeccably well-balanced, this enormous 2001 should provide riveting drinking for 15+ years.
VM 90 (8/2004): Saturated bright ruby. Pungent, perfumed nose dominated by chocolate, espresso and mint. Superripe and thick but distinctly porty, with some greenness lurking beneath its wave of fruit. Impressively sweet and liqueur-like, conveying an impression of low acidity. I'd locate this in the "too much ain't enough" school. Finishes very rich, thick and long, but needs more verve. This X-treme wine might not make for civilized company at the dinner table. |

A restrained, ultra-fresh and distinctly floral nose reflects notes of various white orchard fruit aromas, lemon zest and discreet wood toast. There is outstanding volume to the rich and succulent broad-shouldered flavors that possess focused power on the beautifully long and sappy mineral-infused finish that is shaped by citrus-tinged acidity. This isn't quite as structured as the Chevalier, but it too is promising. Drink 2028+. |
