BH 94 (4/2012): A superbly fresh and beautifully layered nose of cool red berry fruit, floral notes and wet stone, the latter of which is present in abundance on the rich yet beautifully detailed middle weight flavors brimming with minerality and energy, all wrapped in a focused, linear and precise finish of huge length, which remains at present youthfully austere. A classic Ducster that will require 10 to 12 years to be at its peak and readers should note that unlike some '08s, this will not be especially approachable young. Drink 2020+. VM 93+ (3/2011): Bright medium red. Pungent aromas of raspberry, cherry, minerals and spices. Lush and silky in the mouth but with terrific energy and a weightless character to the flavors of red fruits, spices and flowers. This round but very young wine has a terrific spine for development in bottle. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins and noteworthy vibrancy. Has the most dimension of this set of 2008s. Stephen Tanzer. |

| BH 91 (1/2011): ( from an enormous 7.5 ha parcel of vines planted in the early 1950s.) The fresh and densely fruited dark berry nose is quite ripe with an intensely earthy and sauvage character that extends to the impressively rich, even opulent full-bodied flavors that possess so much extract that there is a chewy aspect to the mouth coating and concentrated mid-palate, all wrapped in a long, powerful, rustic and dramatic finish. This is an impressive effort though note that patience will be required. Drink 2018+. Outstanding! |

WA 89 (6/2010): Smoky Latakia tobacco and bittersweet herbs accent the bright, fresh red berry fruit of Lachaux’s 2008 Chambolle-Musigny, with the decadent side of this appellation revealing itself in suggestions of forest floor, well-hung game, and faded lily inner-mouth perfume. Refined tannins underlie a finish tinged with smoke, fruit pit bitterness, and considerable intrigue for a village-level wine. I would expect this to provide admirable satisfaction for at least a half dozen years. BH 87-89 (1/2010): Very mild reduction cannot suppress the otherwise lightly spiced high-toned and cool red pinot fruit that gives way to supple but precise flavors that possess ample verve and a touch of minerality on the dusty, long and linear finish. I very much like the mouth feel here and this has the potential to be a very good villages. Drink 2014+. VM 87 (3/2011): Good medium red. Pure aromas of blackberry and blueberry lifted by mint and menthol. Juicy and supple, with moderate intensity and ripe, harmonious acidity. Nicely balanced wine with a savory finish featuring slightly dry tannins. Pascal Lachaux believes that 2009 will be a "mid-term vintage," while the 2008s "will be good early and late" and may never shut down. |

Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Les Chaumes |
$369 |

WA 90 (6/2010): Like most of the premier crus in this collection, 50% new wood was employed here and it’s a tribute to the wine, Lachaux, or tonnelier Stephane Chassin – perhaps to all collectively – that there isn’t any overt woodiness in evidence. The deeper, more clay-rich soils in this site vis-a-vis most of his others is, opines Lachaux’s, the reason for a slightly more rustic tanninity in his 2008 Vosne Romanee Les Chaumes. Ripe purple plum and blackberry are allied to alkaline and overtly chalky elements and shadowed by their distilled counterparts. Despite this wine’s prominent tannins, an unexpected sweetness and mouth-watering savor wells-up in its seriously sustained finish, convincing me that this will be worth cellaring for a few years and is likely to deliver fascination up to at least age 8. That said, one will need to bear in mind the tannins and overt minerality in pairing it, and those not enamored of Pinot’s dark side or of unapologetic tannins will be less impressed than am I. VM 90 (4/2011): Deep red with ruby tones. Complex aromas of dark berries, flowers and spices, complemented by sweet oak and lifted by a peppery nuance. Not a fleshy wine but juicy, firm and aromatic, with lovely balancing acidity giving the wine vibrancy. Not the last word in concentration but finishes with sweet tannins and very good length. Pascal Lachaux noted that in most of his premier and grand crus, he made more wine in 2008 than in either 2009 or 2007. BH 89-92 (1/2010): A more complex and, not surprisingly, notably spicier nose of layered red and blue pinot fruit with plum and violet nuances that complement well the rich, full and concentrated medium-bodied flavors that are on the somber side today before culminating in a firmer and more obviously structured finish that delivers excellent length. This should improve for up to a decade. Drink 2016+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

| BH 89-91 (1/2010): ( from vines averaging between 60 and 70 years of age.) A background hint of wood spice frames the intensely earthy and slightly animale red and blue pinot fruit aromas that also display violet notes that lead to delicious, rich and quite forward flavors that possess a supple mouth feel and excellent depth and length. This is a first rate effort for a villages level wine and recommended. Drink 2015+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

WA 88-89 (6/2010): Smoky black tea, pungent brown spices, and tart cherry inform a Barthod 2008 Chambolle-Musigny of enervating brightness yet incipient textural richness. Tart and pungent in its lasting finish, this will no doubt strike some tasters as leaning toward austerity, but I anticipate an exuberant, highly versatile and stimulating performer at table over the next half dozen years if not longer. “Especially in a challenging vintage," notes Barthod, “my village Chambolle benefits from originating in so many and such diverse locations." VM 87-90 (4/2010): Full, bright red. Pretty aromas of raspberry and flowers. Juicy, intensely flavored and perfumed; with its sappy acidity, this really stimulates the salivary glands. Finishes with suave tannins and noteworthy energy. As strong an early showing for this straight village wine as I can remember. Of course, this wine had the advantage of having been racked at the beginning of September, whereas the premier crus had been racked just a couple weeks before my early November visit. BH 86-89 (1/2010): A more elegant and ever-so-slightly riper nose also displays very high-toned red pinot fruit that is in keeping with the lacy, textured, detailed and minerally middle weight flavors that are racy, linear and precise on the firm and persistent finish. This is not overly complex, at least not yet though this may come with a few years in bottle. Drink: 2013+. |

WA 92-93 (6/2010): Peat, wood smoke, leather, and soy in the nose of Chevillons’ 2008 Nuits-St.-Georges Les Cailles are joined and complimented by rich cherry and plum on the stubbornly gum-coating palate. A tart fruit skin edge; fruit pit piquancy; brown spices; chalky underpinnings; and saliva-inducing salinity all contribute to the invigoration and vibratory, lip-quivering intensity of a multi-faceted finish. There is certain handsome leanness here - bordering on austerity - but what a lot of energy as well! Lock some away for half a dozen years and expect it to perform impressively until at least age 18. VM 91-94 (4/2010): (racked in July) Deep, bright red. Superripe, complex nose melds berries, violet, damp earth and a whiff of balsamic vinegar. Wonderfully silky and suave on entry, then spicy and pure in the middle, with a very fresh black cherry flavor dominating underlying earth and floral notes. This spreads out impressively on the back end, with broad tannins saturating the palate. BH 91-94 (1/2010): (from a 1.12 ha parcel of 75+ year old vines). The most complex array of aromas to this point with an airy, elegant and classy nose brimming with violets, anise, earth and red currant notes that complement to perfection the rich, full-bodied, generous and round medium weight plus flavors that explode onto the hugely long and powerful finish. A wine that manages to pull off the rare feat of being at once imposing yet highly refined. Drink 2017+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

| BH 94 (1/2011): (two-thirds of the vines were planted in 1912 and the remainder in 1973.) Discreet wood influence surrounds the intensely spicy and earthy nose that is at once elegant yet animale and this sauvage character extends to the very rich, powerful and well-muscled flavors that possess a seductively textured yet firm finish of imposing length. This is a big but focused Bèze that has already begun to shut down. Patience will be required. Drink 2023+. |

VM 92+ (4/2011): Medium red. Reticent aromas of raspberry, strawberry, licorice and menthol show a medicinal reserve. Dense, supple and a bit youthfully folded in on itself, with strong stony minerality keeping the red fruit and floral flavors under wraps. A bit less sweet than the Beaux Monts. But this impeccably balanced and energetic wine builds impressively on the back half and saturates the palate with smoky, minerally perfume. BH 91 (1/2011): (planted to vines of 20 and 65 years of age that sit directly above Musigny). A highly complex nose of minerally, cool and sublimely rendered pinot fruit that runs primarily toward the red side of the spectrum is followed by beautifully detailed, racy and remarkably fine middle weight flavors that culminate in a linear and borderline austere finish that offers Outstanding length. This delivers a striking combination of power and finesse with excellent finishing drive. Drink 2016+. Outstanding! WS 88 (9/2011): There's purity to the cherry and strawberry flavors, but also an earthy diesel note that struggles for attention. Tightly wound, with a crisp finish. Best from 2013 through 2021. 20 cases imported. |

| BH 92 (1/2011): Here the ripe and distinctly earthy somber red berry fruit aromas are very much in keeping with the rich, serious, earth-infused and ever-so-slightly rustic full-bodied flavors that are powerful, muscular and culminate in an austere, focused and strikingly long finish. A classic and presently brooding Clos de Vougeot that should age extremely well. (Drink starting 2018). |

VM 90 (3.2023): The 2008 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, poured from magnum, has matured admirably in bottle, losing the new oak that shrouded its birth, revealing more sprightly red fruit, more Pinoté. The palate is medium-bodied with a candied, pastille-like entry. Caramel hints permeate the red fruit; very smooth, but it feels just a little monotone toward the finish. Enjoyable, but it lacks a bit of intellectual heft. Tasted at the Clos Vougeot tasting at Château de la Tour. Neal Martin. BH 94 (1/2011): An especially ripe nose features a spicy mix of earthy red berry fruit aromas that are trimmed in discreet oak. The earth-suffused, serious and strikingly textured full-bodied flavors possess plenty of sève and a youthfully austere, linear and impressively persistent finish. In sum, this is an outstanding Clos de Vougeot though one that will require ample patience. |

BH 95 (1/2012): This too evidenced a hint of reduction that almost immediately dissipated. Otherwise, a background touch of wood highlights an expressive and impressively nuanced nose of red berry fruit that displays a broad range of spice and earth note. At present, this is really very backward though there is very good richness to the full-bodied and quite serious flavors that possess plenty of mid-palate extract that renders the dense but fine tannins almost invisible on the moderately austere and superbly long finish. This knockout Bèze has the balance and material to effortlessly improve over the next 12 to 15 years. Drink: 2020+. VM 93+ (4/2011): Medium red. Multidimensional nose offers red fruits, menthol, smoked ham and wild herbs. Silky and tactile but classically dry. This showy, glyceral wine comes across as almost weightless, thanks to a powerful impression of smoky minerality. With aeration this very long and savory wine showed a compelling deep sweetness. But I wouldn't go near a bottle for at least eight years. |

| BH 93 (4/2012): (From a .63 ha parcel). There is a hint of vegetal here that actually adds breadth to the sauvage, cool and wonderfully fresh and complex nose of red currants, earth and humus. The silky yet focused, intense and overtly austere big-bodied flavors possess an excellent sense of underlying tension on the still exceptionally tight finish that is supported by a very firm tannic spine. This is terrific as it has a strikingly sophisticated mouth feel and superb aging potential. Drink 2023+. |

BH 92 (1/2011): A more elegant but cool and reserved nose of exceptionally pure red berry and plum aromas also possesses notes of earth and underbrush that transfer seamlessly over to the rich, full and focused medium weight plus flavors that are actually quite supple and round but where this really distinguishes itself from the Vaucrains is the seriously impressive depth on the moderately austere and mildly herbal but hugely long finish. Like the Vaucrains, this will need plenty of time. Drink 2018+. Outstanding! WA 92 (6/2010): Another vividly red-fruited as well as red meaty and tight, bright, yet silken-textured essay, the Gouges 2008 Nuits-St.-Georges Les St.-Georges incorporates piquant sage, black pepper, toasted nuts, salt, and fruit pits in its long, lip-smacking finish. There are low-toned dimensions of roasted red meats and peat as well as an emerging, decadent inner-mouth aura of floral perfume that take one beyond the complexities of the corresponding Vaucrains, and at the same time - notwithstanding bright fresh fruit vivacity - lend a sense of substantiality note found in any of the other Gouges 2008s. I would expect this to perform well for 15 or more years. VM 92+ (4/2011): Moderately saturated medium red. Tight, pure nose offers restrained scents of cherry, flowers and peppery spices. Then sweet but taut in the mouth; impressively concentrated owing to the very low yield here but quite closed and hard to taste today. Perfumed and powerful wine but ungiving, and showing less sweetness than the Vaucrains. I'd hold this for five years. |

VM 92 (4/2011): Good bright red. Complex, highly aromatic nose offers redcurrant, tobacco, game, iron, leather and peppery herbs. Sweeter in the middle and more powerful than the Pruliers but with lively spiciness and peppery lift. Finishes ripe and long. A lovely wine, seemingly less austere than the 2009 version. WA 91 (6/2010): Raw red meat and tart cherry in the nose of Gouges’s 2008 Nuits-St.-Georges Les Vaucrains are accented with sage, white pepper, and salinity, all of which combine in the mouth for a pungency, vivacious, saliva-inducing, and deeply-concentrated impression. Here are both the meat and the meat-tenderizing acids, herbs, and brine in one, handy glass! This displays a surprisingly caressing, silken texture to compliment its brightness, and finishes with vibratory intensity as well as invigoration and refreshment such as one doesn’t expect from its genre. The strongly mineral and carnal elements as well as the slightly acerbic personality will excite some of us more than they will others. I think this will prove delightfully and intriguingly versatile over the next 12-15 years. BH 91-93 (1/2010): (a 1 ha mix of younger and older vines that average about 50+ years of age). Gouges noted that they harvested only 18 hl/ha in 2008. Mild reduction does not completely hide the herb-infused ripe red berry fruit aromas that are nuanced by hints of earth and underbrush, both of which can be found on the rich, full and very serious flavors that are tautly muscular and possess real tension on the mouth coating, concentrated and impressively persistent finish. This is not a big Vaucrains by the usual standards of this wine but it's focused and powerful. Drink 2018+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

BH 95 (1/2011): (from Richebourg proper). The '08 Richebourg is blessed with the most complex and most complete nose that features a wonderfully fresh and spicy aromatic profile that includes red and blue pinot fruit, plum, kirsch and an herbal hint that introduces intense, pure and mineral-driven large-bodied flavors that possess a beautiful sense of relief and tension on the hugely long finish. This very stylish effort should be great in time but it will require plenty of it. Drink 2025+. VM 94+ (4/2011): Dark bright red. Wonderfully pungent, soil-driven aromas of minerals, cocoa powder, pepper and smoke. Sappy and densely packed, with terrific mineral lift to the dark berry and saline flavors. Plenty of fruit intensity and juicy energy here, but this backward wine needs a good decade of aging to reveal itself. The long, slowly building finish displays superb grip. WA 93 (5/2011): The 2008 Richebourg is big, powerful and, not surprisingly, rather shut down. Today the tannins are quite imposing, but there is enough richness in the fruit to get a sense of where this wine is headed over the coming years. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2033. WS 92 (6/2011): This is very backward and tight, with a core of rose, black currant and cherry straining to be heard. The fruit is surrounded by firm tannins keeping a grip on everything, virtually shutting down the finish. Gets better with air, yet requires patience. Best from 2015 through 2032. 20 cases imported. |

VM 88+ (3/2011): Palish medium red. Reticent, polite aromas of cherry, raspberry and minerals. Juicy, tight and youthfully imploded, with floral and spice elements emerging on the palate. In a very dry style but more refined than the Charmois. The pure finish features attractive floral/mineral lift. WA 88 (5/2011): The 2008 Vosne-Romanee reveals good inner tension in its sweet crushed flowers, tobacco and incense. This, too, could use a little more complexity. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2016. | VM 96 (3/2011): Medium red. Pungent red berry and mocha aromas are lifted by powerful crushed-stone minerality and complicated by an ineffable floral/earthy perfume. A real essence of 2008 on the palate, with Outstanding sappy cut and penetration to the flavors of cherry, red berries, minerals and spice oil. The building finish spreads out inexorably to saturate the palate. Rigorous and stimulating: a wine of extraordinary complexity, energy and depth. This was one of my top 2008s from barrel a year ago and it's at least as impressive in bottle. Stephen Tanzer. |

| BH 93 (1/2011): (produced from two large parcels of differing vine age - one that is approximately two-thirds of the blend and is now 45 years of age and a second, smaller group of vines that is approximately 20+ years of age.) The deeply pitched nose evidences obvious earth and floral influences on the mostly ripe red pinot fruit aromas that complement the rich, pure and detailed medium weight flavors that culminate in a dusty and mouth coating finish where the supporting tannins display a clear stem influence. This is an excellent wine though it may not be to everyone's taste due to the obvious stem character. Drink 2020+. |

WA 94-95 (6/2010): Brown spices, blond tobacco, sandalwood, and nutmeg mingle with red raspberry confiture on the nose of the Le Moine 2008 Clos De La Roche. A sweet, saline savor of lobster shell reduction wells up on the palate, reinforced by richness of texture. Fine layers of smoky peat and crushed stone add to the complexity and oscillating finishing dynamic of a wine almost certainly destined for 15-20 years of fascination and delight. VM 92-95 (4/2010): Good full red. Outstanding smoky depth to the wild aromas of game and crushed stone; soil is currently dominating fruit here. Then fat, sweet and savory in the mouth, with an umami-like tex ture and a subtle smokiness that is all about terroir Finishes with Outstanding smoky persistence. This is more Clos de la Roche than pinot noir: I can imagine a wine lover weaned on New World pinot being utterly mystified by this. BH 92-94 (4/2010): Noticeable wood adds nuance to the otherwise fresh, earthy and relatively somber plum and red pinot fruit where notes of anise, underbrush and a hint of animale are also present. The big and well-muscled flavors possess fine concentration and a seductive texture on the brooding and youthfully austere finish that is not only very firmly structured and generously wooded but delivers Outstanding length. This is a powerful wine in the context of the vintage and one that will need plenty of cellar time to be at its best. Don't miss! Drink: 2023+ |

BH 93-96 (1/2010): (from a .37 ha parcel in Les Veroilles of 40+ year old vines save for a very tiny parcel in Richebourg proper.) A very fresh, expressive, pure and stunningly spicy nose of notably ripe black and purple pinot fruit and a host of subtle Asian spice nuances, including star anise, hoisin and soy that are in keeping with the deep, serious, tautly muscled and mineral-suffused broad shouldered flavors brimming with dry extract that really coats the palate on the vibrant, precise, mineral-driven and hugely long finish that is linear but less austere than usual. An excellent '08 with terrific development potential. Drink 2023+. WS 94 (12/2010): Reserved now, this nascent red is concentrated, displaying black currant, violet, spice and mineral aromas and flavors, all matched to a silky texture. This is elegant and a picture of finesse, though there's structure on the back end. Shows fine harmony and length, but needs time. Best from 2015 through 2035. 1 cases imported. VM 93-96 (4/2010): Good full red. Wonderfully sappy aromas of raspberry, orange peel, rose petal and flinty, smoky minerality. Compellingly sweet but utterly primary, with terrific energy and definition to the flavors of red fruits and pungent minerals. Perfectly balanced wine; less creamy today than the Brulees but even more sharply delineated. Perhaps most impressive on the explosive rising finish, which shows more fruits and minerals than tannins. WA 92-93 (6/2010): Meo-Camuzet’s 2008 Richebourg strikes me as their most obviously tannic wine of the vintage, despite the confitured intensity and plush richness of its black fruits. The effect of wood - whether or not this includes amplification of tannin - comes out here in a flattering way via a maple syrup-like amalgam of resin and caramel. Sweet, decadent floral perfume; brown spices; and crushed stone add palate interest, though the staining concentration of this wine’s finish is at least as yet somewhat undifferentiated and accompanied by gum-numbing intensity of tannin. When racked, this was “explosive" reports Meo, and the metaphor of a bomb sunk into the earth and topped with sandbags does strike me as potentially useful for a Pinot grand cru I would not want to touch for 5-7 years and which seems built to last for more than twice that long. |

BH 96 (1/2011): Mild but not invisible wood frames very ripe yet cool and airy dark fruit aromas that speak of earth, violets, underbrush and a hint of menthol that leads to reserved, intense and tautly muscular broad-shouldered flavors that are textured, naturally sweet, sappy and concentrated while being supported by a notably firm but not aggressive tannic spine and excellent length on the balanced and palate staining finish. This should require between 15 to 20 years to arrive at its apogee as it's noticeably more structured but unlike some less successful '08s, the phenolics here are quite ripe as the low yields and late picking date are clearly in evidence. This resembles the great 2001 more than a little yet there is even more overall depth of material. In short, this should be truly great in time. Drink 2028+. WA 94+ (5/2011): The 2008 Clos de Tart is all class and elegance. It boasts fabulous inner perfume and endless layers of fruit. The nuance, purity and sheer breed are breathtaking. The 2008 shut down quickly in the glass, but not before leaving a lasting impression. The tannins possess incredible elegance, but that may not be fully apparent for a number of years. This is a gorgeous wine in every way. Anticipated maturity: 2023-2043. VM 93+ (4/2011): Good deep medium red. Aromas of musky wild berries, bitter chocolate and smoky oak. Broad, round, sweet and pliant in the middle palate; in fact, deceptively open-knit today owing to its phenolic ripeness. But despite the cool, humid year, this shows plenty of underlying structure. More saline and peppery than primary-fruity on the finish, which features broad tannins. These grapes were picked beginning on October 6, with minimal sorting being done. Needs time in bottle but does it have the energy for a long-term evolution? WS 90 (12/2011): There's an herbaceous side to this red, along with cherry and sandalwood flavors. Balanced on the dry, tannic side overall, with an astringent finish. Needs time to show its pedigree. Best from 2015 through 2027. 1,700 cases made. |

WA 92 (5/2011): The 2008 Nuits St. Georges Clos de la Marechale offers up black cherries, sweet spices, flowers and licorice, all of which meld together beautifully in a weightless, impeccably elegant style. Floral, minty notes add complexity and nuance on the refined finish. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2020. VM 90 (4/2011): Good medium red. Ripe, aromatic nose of dark berries, licorice and flowers, complicated by musky leather and earth nuances. Much sweeter and richer, not to mention refined, than the Clos des Fourches, which is made mostly from younger vines in the Clos. Spice and pepper notes contribute to this wine's juiciness, and a whiff of blood orange adds lift. Finishes long and firm but not dry. Youthfully tight but sexy wine. BH 90 (1/2011): A distinctly earthy and anise-infused mix of sour cherry and blue berry fruit that displays whiffs of crushed herbs and pepper merges into detailed, pure and almost delicate middle weight flavors that possess a sophisticated mouth feel and fine length. I should point out though that while there is no rusticity present, the very firm tannins are not as refined as those of the Fuees. Drink 2016+. |

WA 91-92 (6/2010): Blueberry fruit and citrus oils inform a surprisingly creamy yet also vivacious palate on Ponsot’s 2008 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes, which displays a textural and tannic refinement; near creaminess; as well as bright length reminiscent of - yet going beyond - those exhibited by the corresponding village cuvee. Saliva-inducing salinity and suggestions of chalk add enticing and intriguing mineral dimensions, while star anise, black tea, and peat add a metaphorically dark aspect. This long-lined, energetic, exuberantly-finishing exemplar of its great site ought to be worth following for at least a dozen years. BH 90-92 (1/2010): This is a very ripe yet wonderfully elegant '08 with an expressive and densely fruited nose of cassis and black cherry that introduces rich, full and equally serious flavors that are not as firmly structured as the Alouettes but more seductive and almost as long. This too is a fine effort and despite the high level of ripeness, it loses none of it Chambolle character. Drink 2016+. Outstanding! |

VM 96 (5/2011): The 2008 Clos de la Roche Cuvee Vieilles Vignes is a silky, elegant wine. Freshly cut roses, dark red fruit and minerals sit on a core of utterly refined tannins. This shows stunning balance in a weightless style that gains energy on the clean, focused finish. This is a fabulous effort from Ponsot. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2033. Antonio Galloni. BH 91 (4/2016): There is a subtle but certainly not invisible touch of brett to the otherwise cool, ripe and complex aromas of plum, red and dark berries, earth and plenty of spice nuances. There is both good volume and energy to the well-detailed broad-shouldered flavors that culminate in an edgy and mildly drying finale. It's hard to know how much of the problem with the finish is attributable to the brett as often there is gas when there is brett which causes the supporting tannins to seem more prominent. My score is a compromise as this is not a bad wine but it's obviously not technically perfect. Moreover it's entirely possible that other bottles would show quite differently if there was no brett. I will have to try another bottle to see if the problem is limited to just this bottle or whether it's systemic. Try from 2023+. |

WA 94 (9/2011): The 2008 Echezeaux is a noticeable step up in quality from the Vosne-Romanee. This is a decidedly rich, powerful Echezeaux endowed with considerable muscle. The aromas and flavors build beautifully towards a dazzling, harmonious finish. The 2008 is a big Echezeaux that could use further time in the cellar. There is plenty of underlying structure to support a long life in the cellar. The 2008 is seriously impressive. If any wine can be said to represent ‘value’ among the Domaine’s 2008s, the Echezeaux is it. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2038. BH 93 (1/2011): (approximately 45 year old vines from 2 different climats, 90% of which is in Les Poulaillères and the other 10% is in Clos St. Denis) A notably riper, intensely spicy, airy and extremely fresh nose blends both red and blue berry fruit aromas as well as warm earth notes that continue onto the rich, velvety and mouth coating medium-bodied flavors that display a bit more minerality than I typically find, all wrapped in a firm, racy and driving finish that delivers Outstanding length. This is a dramatically good effort because this is always very good, it is rarely great but in 2008, it's first rate. Drink 2023+. VM 91 (4/2011): Good full. red. Expressive, deep aromas and flavors of raspberry, strawberry, smoke and underbrush. Has enough flesh to support its rather firm acid structure. This dry, persistent wine finishes juicy but not tart, with excellent thrust and a subtle saline note emerging on the back. |

Sweet on entry, then taut and penetrating in the middle, with superb energy to the flavors of tangy, crunchy red fruits. At once dense and light on its feet, finishing with a saline nuance and lingering cherry flavor. This serious, structured wine really lifts the palate and stimulates the taste buds. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 90-93 (1/2010): A surprisingly high-toned nose of cranberry and raspberry trimmed in a bit of warm earth introduces very forward yet precise flavors that are quite round and supple yet deliver excellent authority and impressive depth on the balanced and lingering finish. This is not a big example or even especially muscular but it's harmonious and should age well. Drink 2018+. VM 90+ (4/2011): Pale-medium red. Musky cherry, fresh herbs, brown spices and menthol on the nose and palate; more primary than the Mazy-Chambertin. Then sweeter and larger-scaled but backward today and showing a medicinal austerity. I like this wine's intensity of flavor and palate presence. Finishes with a broad, fine dusting of tannins that spread out to saturate the palate and leave the taste buds vibrating. WA 89-90 (6/2010): New leather, black tea, and bright cherry and plum scent Rousseau’s 2008 Clos de La Roche, which comes to the palate bright and with tart chew of fruit skins and smokiness of black tea serving for invigoration in a finish of impressive persistence. Less exuberant and multi-faceted today than the corresponding Mazy, this also displays more aggressive - faintly gum-numbing - tannins than the several wines that preceded it in the present line-up. |

VM 94+ (4/2011): Medium red. Blueberry, minerals and spices on the nose, lifted by notes of rose and white pepper. Pure and silky but with terrific inner-mouth tension to the sappy crushed fruit flavors. Denser than the Latricieres, but every bit as vibrant--and more backward today. Finishes with ripe tannins and subtly complex notes of fruit, game and saline, smoky underbrush. Superb. BH 93 (1/2011): (from a 2 ha parcel that runs from the bottom to the very top of the slope.) A pure, airy and very cool nose of pungent minerality and slightly sauvage red berries is the epitome of aromatic elegance and serves as a graceful introduction to the broad-shouldered and sleekly muscular flavors that possess good freshness and plenty of vibrancy while culminating in an intensely mineral-driven, focused and powerful finish that is wonderfully persistent, linear and extremely tight. This too will need plenty of time to unwind, which I estimate at between 14 to 18 years. Drink 2023+. WA 92+ (6/2010): Cedar, licorice, ripe dark berries, and raw beef mark the nose of Trapet’s 2008 Chambertin. Berry skin tartness and peaty pungency convey invigoration, while pure sweetness of berry fruit and vivid meatiness vie for one’s primary attention. There is a crushed stone note that lends a hint of austerity to otherwise energetically bright and decidedly palate-staining finishing proceedings. Like several of the 2008s here, this may have been suffering a bit from recent bottling as there is a slight sense of constriction where I would otherwise expect the wine to open up more. Still, this is impressive juice with at least 12-15 year potential. |

WA 94 (6/2010): Savory sirloin juices are suggested on the nose and palate of the Tremblay 2008 Chapelle-Chambertin (tasted from bottle) to an extent that makes you shake your head wondering how such a thing could come from grapes. (We’re talking here about especially tiny berries and millerandage-riddled clusters, as is the case every year from these ancient vines.) That said, plenty of ripe cassis, dark cherry, and licorice is present to compliment this wine’s remarkably vivid carnal side. Dense, fine-grained tannin allied to energetic intensity of fresh fruit suggest the rippling of well-developed muscles in a torso that some (including me) would say is inherently testosterone-laden as a matter of terroir. Expect at least 12-15 years of vigor, but don’t look for charm. While few could enjoy the combination of expendable income and luck it would require, a comparison of this Chapelle with that of Claude Dugat will make for a startling combination of truth-in-terroir with stark stylistic divergence. WS 94 (5/2011): Deep, rich and smoky, this delivers ripeness and complexity. Black cherry, blackberry and black currant flavors reign, with spice and mineral adding dimension. The aftertaste of sweet fruit and spice is long and refined. Best from 2013 through 2028. 15 cases imported. VM 93 (4/2011): Deep red-ruby. Reticent but pure aromas of dark fruits, smoked meat, minerals, pepper and sexy oak, plus a whiff of garrigue. Concentrated, aromatic and sweet, with enticing herbal and peppery lift to the dark fruit and licorice flavors. Not as fleshy as the Beaux Monts but very pure, scented and long. Always the best-looking grapes along with the Feusselottes, notes Tremblay. BH 90-93 (1/2010): ( from a .38 ha parcel). Like the Beaux Monts, this is also beautifully complex with an earthy and serious yet elegant nose of red pinot fruit, underbrush and a hint of the sauvage that is also reflected by the pure, detailed and powerful middle weight plus flavors that possess ample dry extract that coats the mouth on the lingering finish. Drink 2018+. |

VM 95 (5/2011): The 2008 Bonnes Mares is totally classy and elegant. It shows gorgeous inner liqueur-like sweetness, expressive aromatics and a rich, textured finish that is a marvel to behold. The sheer depth, density and incisiveness of the fruit is fabulous. Expressive floral notes round out the finish. This is very much an understated Bonnes Mares from de Vogüe. Antonio Galloni. Anticipated maturity: 2023-2048. BH 94 (1/2011): A more deeply pitched nose of cool and reserved red and black cherry aromas that are quite fresh and pure and are laced more with warm earth than stone though both are present. The focused and detailed broad-shouldered flavors are blessed with ample dry extract that cuts a bit of the austerity on the linear, serious, mouth coating and hugely long finish. As is often the case, this is still quite primary and will need plenty of time to unwind. Drink: 2023+ VM 93 (4/2011): Deep red. Briary raspberry, blueberry, mocha and menthol on the nose, lifted by peppery spices; a real essence of this grand cru. Then creamier and larger-scaled than the Chambolle premier cru, with the sweet berry fruit flavors enlivened by the peppery component and savory soil tones on the back. This really tickles the taste buds on the broad, firmly tannic, very long finish. Steph |

WA 94 (5/2011): The 2008 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru (from young vines in Musigny) is a powerful, inward wine. There is lovely depth to the fruit, but the wine remains tightly coiled at this stage, even if occasional glimmers of richness emerge over time. Cloves, cinnamon and a host of other spiced notes add complexity on the finish. This is another superb, textured wine from de Vogue. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2028. BH 92 (1/2011): (all from younger vines Musigny). Classic ruby. An elegant and still restrained nose features pure and high-toned red pinot fruit, stone and a hint of spice that gives way to gorgeously detailed, precise and energetic medium-bodied flavors that possess a textured mouth feel that sweeps into a focused and sappy finish of controlled power and mild austerity. In sum, this is a highly intense wine of finesse. Drink 2018+. Outstanding! VM 91+ (4/2011): Bright medium red. Higher-toned on the nose than the village wine, offering aromas of cherry, raspberry, spices and mint, lifted by menthol and anise. Suave and silky but youthfully tight, with its sweet fruit under wraps today. A piquant element of orange zest gives the firmly tannic finish a distinctly bracing quality. This is made from young vines in Musigny. |

Musigny Grand Cru Cuvee Vieilles Vignes |

WA 97 (5/2011): The 2008 Musigny Vieilles Vignes is a wine I could smell all day. The explosive bouquet literally jumps from the glass, followed by deep, beautifully delineated layers of fruit. This shows terrific concentration and depth, dazzling finesse, and a nicely pointed, direct finish. It is an eternal wine. Anticipated maturity: 2023-2048. BH 96 (1/2011): This is also quite reserved at present with an elegant, airy, cool and pure nose that is kaleidoscopically complex as it offers red currant, plum, black cherry and a panoply of floral and spice notes, in particular violet and anise, before marrying seamlessly into mineral-driven and alluring big-bodied flavors that explode on the powerful and almost painfully intense finish that delivers genuinely stunning length. I love the way Musigny can so effortlessly combine a silky palate impression with serious muscle. This should be quite impressive in time though note that it will need a minimum of 18 to 25 years of cellar time. Drink 2028+. Don't miss! VM 95+ (4/2011): (bottled in April of 2010): Good full medium red. Pungent aromas of wild red berries and crushed stone complicated by mint and pepper. Juicy and extremely intense but youthfully imploded today, showing a medicinal reserve and a crystallized quality to its sharply delineated fruit and mineral flavors. Finishes with serious tannic spine, but the wine's energy and subtle building perfume are utterly captivating. Almost painful today but showed building fruit even in the brief time I had it in my glass. Enologist Francois Millet believes that the freshness of the 2008s "will collapse if the wines are served too warm" as the syrupy fruit character of the vintage is needed to balance its brisk acidity. He suggested a serving temperature of under 60 degrees. |
