VM 92 (3/2017): Full red. Aromas of dark cherry, smoky minerals and sexy soil tones. Very sweet and broad on entry, then suave and nicely delineated in the mid-palate, displaying complex saline soil tones and cherry and dark berry fruit flavors. This savory Volnay finishes with building toothcoating tannins and terrific chocolatey length. Needs time, but this wine strikes me as more harmonious than the excellent 2013 version was at the same stage.
WA 91-93 (12/2015): The 2014 Volnay 1er Cru Champans has a more pointed and angular nose at the moment when compared with the Taillepieds. It is probably the most primal of the Volnay, black cherry and cassis fruit suffused with tangible mineralite, but it needs to be knitted together during the remainder of its elevage. The palate is very well balanced, the wood component again needing time to enmesh, but there is good substance here -- even if I prefer the elegance of the Caillerets on the finish (at the moment).
BH 91-93 (4/2016): ( from a huge 3.98 ha parcel.) Once again there is a deft touch of wood apparent on the restrained, cool and pretty array of red berry, earth and softly spice-inflected nose. The wonderfully refined, layered and sleek middle weight flavors possess a polished mouth feel while delivering Outstanding length on the moderately austere and dusty finale. Like the Taillepieds this is quite firm and will need at least 6 to 8 years of cellaring before it will be approachable. Patience required. Drink 2026+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

WA 91-93 (12/2015): The 2014 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru has a very composed bouquet with intense red cherries, wild strawberry and raspberry preserve aromas, offering that sensuality Burgundy-lovers seek from a Charmes-Chambertin. The palate is medium-bodied and showing the hand of the oak a little at the moment, but it is in proportion with the fruit and the finish maintains fine delineation.
VM 90-92 (1/2016): (from vines in the highest part of Mazoyères): Healthy dark red. Aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, licorice, anise and bitter chocolate show less floral character than the Combottes. Rich, fine-grained and deep, conveying a chocolatey ripeness but coming across as a bit earth-bound, with a slightly more rustic texture than the Combottes. This plush wine finishes with big, ripe, chewy tannins.
BH 92-95 (1/2016): (from a 1.13 ha parcel in Mazoyères that abuts the Route des Grands Crus.) A more deeply pitched and notably earthier nose also displays plenty of sauvage character. This gamy element continues onto the concentrated medium weight plus flavors that possess a caressing mouth feel despite the evident muscularity of the austere and explosive finish. This is very Mazoyères in character yet it is a bit less rustic than usual. Worth a look provided that you have the patience to cellar it. Drink 2029+. |

VM 92 (3/2017): Good medium red. Captivating aromas of cherry, minerals, black olive and rooty underbrush. Densely packed, ripe and seamless, but with an impression of calcaire weightlessness. Still a bit youthfully medicinal but this saline premier cru boasts serious inner-mouth tension and finishes with sweet tannins and very good savory persistence. Stephen Tanzer.
WS 91 (12/2016): Ripe, with cherry, currant and floral flavors, this red is supple, backed by solid tannins. Remains elegant and balanced, presenting a chalky, peppery finish. Best from 2018 through 2032. 75 cases imported.
BH 91-93 (1/2016): (from 40+ year old vines.) There is yet again excellent volume to the solidly concentrated medium weight flavors that possess more refinement but less muscle and power before culminating in a lingering and harmonious finish where the supporting tannins are dense but fine. Good stuff and worth a look. Drink 2026+.
NM 89 (9/2017): Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, Domaine Arlaud's 2014 Morey St Denis 1er Cru les Ruchots has a fairly straightforward but appealing nose of brambly red fruit and light gravelly aromas. The palate is soft on the entry, more Chambolle-like than Morey, and it just loses a little depth and vigor toward the tapered finish. This is not bad, but in present company it comes across a tad nondescript and needs more weight and presence. |

| BH 91 (4/2017): ( the 5+ ha Clos is composed of approximately 80% Petits Epenots and 20% Grands Epenots; the vine ages run from 18 to 75+ years of age.) This is markedly reduced at present so I would strongly suggest decanting it if you are tempted to open a bottle young. Otherwise the supple, round and utterly delicious medium-bodied flavors possess a sleek muscularity and solid intensity, all wrapped in a lingering finish that presently displays a hint of an edge that may or may not ever round off. As such my rating is a compromise as I suspect that this will develop even better complexity with age and thus even if the balance isn't perfect, the '14 Clos des Epeneaux should still make for a lovely wine. Drink 2024+. |

VM 93-96 (1/2016): (100% vendange entier; 80% new oak): Deep red-ruby. Alluring aromas of black raspberry, licorice and minerals show a noble, deep vegetal nuance that reminded me of a young Romanee-Conti. The youthfully unevolved middle palate displays the depth, pliancy and freshness of the vintage at its best. Finishes extremely long and ripely tannic, with palate-saturating sweetness and mineral pungency. These 90-year-old vines were originally planted by the father of Robert Arnoux, according to Pascal, who added that the estate's vines in Suchots are even older, at 94. Stephen Tanzer.
BH 95 (1/2017): (from a .375 ha parcel situated by La Grande Rue.) An even more elegant nose of spicy and floral red and black pinot fruit is nuanced by subtle traces of sandalwood, Asian-style tea, soy and anise. There is fine concentration to the relatively powerful sappy and mouth coating flavors that are shaped by wonderfully fine-grained tannins on the hugely long, balanced and moderately austere finale. This terrific and notably powerful effort is also quite silky yet it should have zero difficulty rewarding at least 15 to 20 years of cellar time. Drink 2029+. |

BH 93 (4/2016): (from equally sized parcels in both Rugiens Hauts and Bas that measure <1 ha.) A wonderfully elegant and slightly fresher nose is composed by notes of cool wild red berries, stone and intense floral aromas that are also trimmed in discreet wood. There is really lovely detail to the refined yet muscular and powerful medium-bodied flavors that possess plenty of minerality on the firmly structured and youthfully austere finish. This is definitely going to need at least 7 to 8 years of cellaring and should easily reward 10 to 12. Drink 2024+. Sweet Spot Outstanding!
VM 91-93 (1/2016): (50% of the crop was lost to hail, but Volnay production in 2014 was down closer to 75%, according to Guillaume Boillot; half from Rugiens Hauts and half from Rugiens Bas; 50% new oak):Bright, dark, healthy red. Inviting iron-y perfume of redcurrant, red cherry, rust, spices, white pepper and minerals. Silky in texture and intense, communicating insinuating soil salinity to its red fruit and mineral flavors. Finishes with noble tannins and rising spicy length. For such a fine-grained wine, this boasts terrific thrust.
WA 91 (1/2016): The 2014 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens has a fragrant bouquet, almost Volnay-like, gentle and caressing with scents of raspberry and cranberry, contained but pure. The palate is fresh and vibrant on the entry, sappy red berry fruit here with a pleasing saline element towards the finish. There is very prudent use of new oak here and the wine really shows its terroir to good effect. Very fine. |

BH 91 (4/2016): A deft touch of wood sets off the ripe, pure and elegant aromas of spice and floral-inflected dark pinot fruit and plum scents. There is excellent delineation and energy to the tension-filled, rich and complex medium-bodied flavors that possess a lush, even opulent mouth feel yet the finish is borderline robust. In sum this is a Santenots of contrasts but I like the interplay of different elements. Drink 2021+.
VM 89-92 (1/2016): Bright, dark red. Subtly complex dark red fruits, flowers and chocolate on the nose. Plush and silky on the palate, possessing good buffering material to support the fairly strong tannins. This seamless, vinous wine shows no easy sweetness but boasts excellent sappy vinosity. Incidentally, the Boillots recently sold their vines in Savigny-lès-Beaune and Beaune in order to buy some Puligny-Montrachet. |

Though this is an overtly powerful and muscular wine the seductively textured mid-palate is velvety thanks to the copious amount of dry extract that also buffers the notably firm tannic spine on the gorgeously long finale. This strikingly good effort will be approachable somewhat earlier than usual but make no mistake this is still going to require a long stay in a cool cellar. |

| BH 93 (4/2016): (typically made from 6 or 7 different 1ers depending on whether the parcel of Les Baudes is included.) As one would reasonably expect this is much more elegant with its highly perfumed and ultra-pure essence of red currant and wide ranging floral elements that are trimmed in sandalwood and anise nuances. The stony and saline middle weight flavors possess laser-like delineation along with good richness and volume, all wrapped in a firm and ever-so-mildly austere finale that also makes it clear that this is built-to-age, indeed it will very like require 10 to 12 years of bottle age to reach its apogee. BH 90-92 (4/2016): An all but mute and softly wooded nose requires considerable swirling at this early stage to coax the aromas of plum, tea, spice and dried floral notes to reveal themselves. There is Outstanding vibrancy to the wonderfully fresh and intensely mineral-driven flavors that possess fine mid-palate concentration where the supporting dry extract does a fine job of buffering the notably firm tannins on the focused and lingering finish. Textbook Taillepieds. Drink 2024+.
WA 88-90 (12/2015): The 2014 Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds has a terse, stony nose that is tightly wound at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp, slightly rigid tannin that, like the Pitures, needs to develop a little more flesh and corpulence on the finish. It is actually quite Pommard-like in style at this juncture, so we will have to see if it gains more flesh by the time of bottling. |

WA 93-95 (12/2015): The 2014 Vosne-Romanee 1Er Cru Malconsorts is more opulent and generous on the nose compared to the Beaumonts with blueberry and black cherry fruit, more red plum and strawberry notes evolving with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a gentle grip in the mouth, the whole bunch fruit lending freshness and subtle sous-bois character on the finish. There is a little new wood to be subsumed on the finish, but it has great potential and represents one of the best Malconsorts you will find this year.
VM 92-94 (1/2016): Deep, bright red. Soil-driven aromas of raspberry, blackberry, blood orange and iodiney minerality, with a complementary element of sexy oak. Juicy and intense but still youthfully imploded; totally different in grain and texture from the more pliant Beaux Monts. Finishes with terrific sappy energy and serious tannic spine. This will need a minimum of seven or eight years of cellaring.
BH 92-94 (1/2016): ( from a 1.57 ha parcel.) The intensely floral-suffused nose is not quite as spicy as that of the Beaux Monts but it is arguably even more complex with its layered aromas of red and dark currant, sandalwood and lilac nuances. There is Outstanding power and punch to the beautifully delineated broad-shouldered flavors that possess a beguiling texture on the complex, balanced and driving mineral-inflected finale. This is terrific but plenty of patience will be required as I suspect that this will close down once it's bottled. Drink 2026+. Outstanding! |

The muscular big-bodied flavors possess real power and punch along with ample minerality before terminating in a hugely long, complex and well-balanced finale. As it always is this is distinctly old school in style and will definitely require extended cellaring. Drink 2026+. Outstanding!
VM 91-94 (1/2016): Dark red-ruby. Tight, medicinal aromas of black cherry, bitter chocolate and menthol. Very rich and deep, with captivating sweetness cut by medicinal menthol and minerals. Highly concentrated, dense and broad but uncompromisingly dry. Finishes very long and perfumed, with serious saline tension. This very impressive premier cru has a big tannic structure and may well close down after the bottling. Stephen Tanzer.
WA 90-92 (12/2015): The 2014 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru les Vaucrains, cropped at 26 hectoliters per hectare, was just a little loose-knit on the nose when I tasted it at the domaine, perhaps missing the cohesion of the Pruliers. The palate pulls things together with slightly savory red berry fruit, fine tannin and well judged acidity. There is a chalky note coming through on the finish and a spiciness that comes through on the aftertaste. Again, classic in style, at the moment the palate is leading the way and waiting for the nose to catch up. |

As is usually the case this is both bigger and more powerful if not quite as elegant with a similar level of mid-palate concentration where the copious dry extract does a reasonably good if not perfect job of buffering the firm tannic spine on the impressively long if slightly edgy finish. This has many positive attributes but the balance isn't quite perfect. Drink 2022+. |

VM 93 (3/2017): (13% alcohol; less than 20 hectoliters per hectare produced): Good bright red. Pretty aromas of dark cherry, menthol and dark chocolate. Rich, broad, ripe and dry; more mouthfilling than the foregoing samples but still with a light touch. (The pH here is 3.4, but Lafon noted that the '15s have lower pHs and higher acidity.) Lovely depth to the fruit, spice and soil tones. Finishes very long, with refined tannins, superb energy and excellent balance. This will probably be accessible relatively early, like the Monthelie. BH 92 (4/2017): (from 40+ year old vines planted in shallow, high clay content soil sitting on a bed of solid rock.) An elegant, cool and beautifully complex nose displays a discreetly spicy array of red berries plum, violets, tea and a wisp of warm earth. There is really lovely delineation to the concentrated and vibrant medium-bodied flavors that exhibit a taut muscularity while remaining refined and well-balanced on the firm but not austere finale. This is often a very impressive wine chez Lafon but in 2014 it is a bit more elegant than usual. Drink 2022+. Outstanding! |

WS 97 (5/2017): An expressive, cherry- and raspberry-flavored red, wrapped in a layer of smoke, vanilla and toasted spice. Intense, with assertive tannins, but the elements come together on the expansive finish. Firm now, gaining suppleness with air and showing excellent potential. Best from 2022 through 2045. 41 cases imported.
VM 96 (3/2017): Deep, bright medium red. Knockout nose combines dark raspberry, clove, licorice, white pepper, minerals and earth. Conveys incredible inner-mouth lift considering its thickness of texture and spicy intensity. Really spreads out to saturate the palate. Saline, superconcentrated, pungently mineral wine with a firm tannic spine, integrated acidity and extraordinary rising length and solidity. This is almost painful today. A great Bonnes-Mares: in the end, Mounir Saouma blended his lots from the Chambolle (two-thirds) and Morey (one-third) sides of the cru. Stephen Tanzer.
WA 93-95 (4/2016): The 2014 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, a blend of the north and south parts of the vineyard (here blended together) has a plush redcurrant, cranberry and strawberry scented bouquet with fine delineation. The palate is crisp and taut with red cherries and wild strawberry, steely and focused with a touch of white pepper on the long finish. This is one of the best reds from Lucien Le Moine in 2014, not a flamboyant Bonnes-Mares, but correct and blue-blooded. |

BH 91 (4/2016): An appealingly fresh and airy nose features ripe aromas of violets, plum, dark cherry and a discreet hint of various spice elements. There is lovely energy and underlying tension to the mineral-inflected, sleek, intense and delicious flavors that culminate in a dusty and moderately austere finish that also displays a hint of bitter cherry. (Drink starting 2021).
VM 89-91 (1/2016): Dark ruby-red. Very primary, ripe aromas of black raspberry, blueberry and chocolate show a touch of animal fur reduction. Sweet and chocolatey in the mouth but a bit chunky today. The wine's substantial tannins are still somewhat unrefined. Although the Pousse d'Or wines were in tank in November, they remained on their fine lees. Stephen Tanzer.
WA 89-91 (12/2015): The 2014 Volnay 1er Cru En Caillerets comes from vines mostly planted in 1976 and sees 30% new oak. It has a charming and quite seductive bouquet: blackberry and griottes, those wet limestone notes percolating through with gentle aeration. The palate is supple on the entry, quite high-toned compared to its peers with a succulent, candied cassis and black cherry finish, then a saline aftertaste. Give this a couple of years in bottle to shave off the edges. |

Pungent and extremely intense but utterly weightless owing to its near-perfect balance of sweetness and juiciness. Best today on the explosive, building back end, which offers a powerfully chewy, sappy impression but no rough edges. Winemaker François Millet suggests waiting at least 10 to 15 years. BH 95 (1/2017): (from an incredible 6.46 ha parcel, which doesn't include the .67 ha parcel planted to chardonnay.) While highly complex this is cool to the point of only grudgingly revealing a strikingly layered combination of violets, rose petals, sandalwood, anise, clove, plum and dark currant scents. This is a big and overtly muscular wine with broad-shouldered and admirably concentrated flavors yet for all of the impressive size, weight and volume, the massively long finish is serene, even Zen-like. 2014 is a relatively seductive and forward vintage for this storied wine, and I appreciate that calling a wine "forward" when it will likely need 20 years to fully mature is a relative concept!
