BH 94 (4/2012): (the 5+ ha Clos is composed of approximately 80% Petits Epenots and 20% Grands Epenots; the vine ages run from 18 to 75+ years of age.) This is also quite ripe but agreeably fresh with pure aromas of mocha, red currant, cassis, black cherry, warm earth, violets and subtle spice hints. There is good energy to the intense and admirably rich full-bodied flavors that envelope the palate with velvety sap on the beautifully balanced and impressively persistent finish. I very much like the sense of underlying tension because despite this being a big wine with plenty of concentration, the balance is impeccable and there is absolutely nothing ponderous about this complete effort. There is a hint of backend warmth but otherwise, this is really most impressive. Note however that this very firm effort will require plenty of cellar time. Drink 2029+. Outstanding! WA 94 (4/2012): The 2009 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux is flat-out beautiful. Layers of racy, exotic fruit caress the palate as the wine opens up in the glass. The 2009 is quite typical of the year, yet possesses fabulous overall harmony. Although exuberant today, the Clos des Epeneaux will deliver tons of pleasure for many years. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2030. VM 93 (4/2012): (this was racked only once, a month before being bottled in June of 2011): Good bright medium red. Fresh red berries, licorice and truffle on the nose, complicated by tobacco and iron. Dense, lush and packed with fruit; really showcases the richness of a sunny year without turning heavy. Deep, saline, seamless wine, with a thick, soil-driven finish. Finishes with surprising verve. Very impressive. Stephen Tanzer. |

| BH 86-88 (1/2011): A fruity and very fresh nose of red berry fruit and earth nuances that carry over to the detailed, pure and vibrant middle weight flavors that possess notably better depth than is usually found at this level plus a lingering and firm finish. Lovely. (Drink starting 2013) |

BH 94 (1/2012): (from a .85 ha parcel). This is also exceptionally fresh and bright with relatively deeply pitched aromas of primarily red and blue pinot fruit that are in keeping with the rich and intensely mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors that possess excellent depth of material on the firm, long and gorgeously balanced finish. This is terrific juice though note that patience is part of the price of entry. A knockout. Drink 2019+. Outstanding! WA 94 (4/2012): The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras is loaded with class and energy. There is tremendous energy in the glass as layers of dark cherries, mint, graphite, crushed rocks, spices and licorice gain volume and breath through the mid-palate and finish. I very much like the intensity and focus here. The Cras is going to need at least another few years in bottle, but it is shaping up to be truly stellar. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029. VM 93+ (4/2012): Good medium red. Aromas of musky raspberry, coffee and earth, with a note of sappy cherry emerging with air. Large-scaled and silky in texture but utterly unevolved today, coming across as dry and uncompromising. This youthfully imploded wine is distinctly linear today and will need extended aging to ripen in the bottle. Strong mineral and menthol notes carry through to the long aftertaste. An austere 2009 with substantial dusty tannins, but built for long life. |

| BH 92 (1/2012): (From a .26 ha parcel of 70+ year old vines.) An intensely floral nose with perfumed and pure aromas of red pinot fruit gives way to textured, precise, intense and quite serious flavors that are again built on a base of firm minerality, all wrapped in a dusty, intense and mouth coating finish. This does evidence a touch of austerity but there is so much sap that buffers the structure that it stops well short of being severe. I especially like the impeccable sense of balance as well as the fact that this is very fresh for the vintage. Drink 2017+. Outstanding! |

| BH 90-93 (1/2011): ( from both Charmes and Mazoyères.) A very ripe nose speaks of mocha, coffee and blueberry liqueur that is followed by rich, intense and dense flavors that possess excellent power and weight as well as a textured mouth feel, particularly on the remarkably persistent finish. This is well made and balanced though I confess that it's riper than I personally prefer. Drink 2021+. |

BH 90 (1/2012): A mix of wood and natural spice sits atop red and blackberry liqueur aromas that merge into rich, concentrated and pure flavors that happily possess plenty of extract as the tannins are robust and quite firm. This is a relatively powerful effort that isn't an exercise in finesse but it most impressive nonetheless. A big Vosne villages. VM 88+ (4/2012): Good medium red. Reticent but lively aromas of black cherry, cassis, licorice and menthol, with some riper notes of mocha and chocolate coming up with air. Juicy but a bit youthfully aggressive; in a rather powerful, chocolatey style for village wine. No shortage of energy here, but this needs time to harmonize in bottle. |

| VM 93+ (3/2012): Medium red, a bit lighter than the Clos Saint-Jacques. Captivating raspberry, spice and wild herb aromas are accented by blood orange and an exotic whiff of white fruits. Wonderfully bright and intense for 2009, showing an almost saline impression of extract to the bitter cherry and mineral flavors. Much more imploded than it was from barrel, this very long, strongly mineral but slightly disjointed grand cru calls for eight to ten years of cellaring. Stephen Tanzer. |

WA 93 (5/2011): The 2009 Beaune Clos des Mouches is totally beautiful. It shows gorgeous inner perfume and a weightless, gracious personality. The inner sweetness of the fruit flows nicely to the sensual, radiant fruit. A lovely vein of minerality underpins the subtle finish. Drouhin has a total of 7 hectares planted with Pinot Noir in the Clos des Mouches. The house’s harvest starts and ends here. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2039. BH 92 (5/2011): Very mild reduction is not enough to completely hide the otherwise pretty nose of red berry fruit, violets and earth aromas though if you're going to drink one young, I would recommend 20 to 30 minutes of aeration first. The rich but well detailed and quite finely mineral-inflected flavors possess a fleshy mouth feel as well as excellent volume and length. This is quite ripe but not over the top and this should age well. Drink 2017+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! WS 92 (6/2012): A touch of reduction—smoke, rubber—signals this cherry-flavored red, which is silky, dense and firm, with a lingering sweet fruit- and spice-tinged finish. Opens up with air, so decant if you drink now. Best from 2015 through 2032. 500 cases imported. VM 90 (4/2012): (30% vendange entier): Medium-red. Aromas of dark cherry, minerals, licorice and smoke; much more soil-driven than the Greves. Ripe and deep, with a saline quality to the mineral, mocha and chocolate flavors. Nicely concentrated, sweet Beaune wine with the lush texture of the year. This has turned out well. |

BH 95 (5/2011): (from a .47 ha parcel). A ripe yet airy and fresh nose speaks of spice and pure plum aromas that display background hints of cassis and floral aromas that are followed by intense, powerful and broad-shouldered flavors that possess superb depth of material and knockout complexity on the hugely long finish. This is very serious juice that is most impressive. Drink 2024+. Don't miss! WS 92 (5/2012): Shy aromatically, this rich, silky red boasts incisive smoke- and spice-tinged cherry flavors on a harmonious frame. Appealing now, but requires time to reveal its class and depth. Fine length. Best from 2015 through 2032. 27 cases imported. WA 92 (5/2011): The 2009 Grands-Echezeaux is an opulent, full-bodied wine for the house. This is all about texture and richness, as the fruit is very much on the overt side. It will be fascinating to see how the Grands-Echezeaux will develop in the coming years. This finishes with substantial energy and polish. The Grands-Echezeaux is all estate fruit from old vines. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039. |

| BH 90 (1/2012): This is very ripe yet fresh with the stems contributing a distinct floral influence to the pure black pinot fruit, earth and wet stone aromas. There is excellent richness to the dense and very serious medium-bodied flavors where the underlying structural elements are notably ripe. One aspect of this that I very much like is that despite the high level of ripeness, there is good energy and freshness. A fine villages that could be drunk young. Outstanding! Drink: 2016+. |

WA 92-95 (5/2011): The 2009 Echezeaux (from one of the cooler sites in the vineyard) hovers on the palate in a weightless expression of grace and class. It is impeccably refined from start to finish, with delicate layers of white flowers and sweet spices that add complexity and nuance to the fruit. The wine’s gorgeous inner fragrance and impossibly fine tannins are first-rate. This is another dazzling wine from Dujac. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2034. BH 92-94 (1/2011): (from the climat Champs Traversin). An intensely floral, spicy, earthy and ripe nose offers up a densely fruited mix of black pinot fruit, black cherry and cassis aromas. The big-bodied flavors are exceptionally cool and fresh yet the tannins are fully mature as they support and shape the restrained, minerally and impressively persistent finish. Like the Malconsorts, this will require at least 15 years to arrive at its peak. Drink 2024+. VM 91-93 (2/2011): Good deep red-ruby color. Musky black cherry, black raspberry, chocolate and underbrush on the nose. Then higher-pitched on the palate than the nose would suggest, cool and filigree in style, with limited fat (this is the lowest in alcohol of the Dujac grand crus at 12.6%). Slight gamey complexity. Finishes with firm but suave tannins and a light touch. |

| BH 92-94 (1/2011): Mild wood influence sets off a highly complex nose comprised of fresh red currant and blue pinot fruit aromas that are liberally laced with warm earth and a sauvage hint that carries over to the relatively refined and supple yet entirely serious, powerful and concentrated flavors that deliver outstanding length. Despite the fact that the underlying tannins are finer than usual, this is not to say that it is an elegant wine though it is less youthfully austere than I typically find with this wine. VM 97+ (4/2012): Good bright dark red. Perfumed, profound aromas and flavors of red cherry, rose oil, minerals and crushed stone, with darker berries emerging with air. Like liquid velvet on the palate--lush dense and incredibly fine-grained. Most impressive today on the extraordinary expanding, palate-staining finish, which rises to a crescendo of spices and minerals. A wine of great thrust and chewiness, this is hard to scrape off the palate. An essence of Corton grand cru. BH 93-96 (1/2011): This sports one of the ripest noses in the entire range with distinctly spicy notes adding interest to the admirably fresh plum and mocha suffused aromas that precede highly energetic, concentrated and big-bodied flavors that are extremely concentrated and the dry extract imparts a seductive texture to the mildly austere, balanced and hugely long finish. This is one of the most promising vintages of this wine that I have ever seen but note that this will definitely not be an early drinker as the supporting structure is more than simply firm. Drink 2029+. WS 95 (2/2012): Enticing aromas of black cherry and black currant introduce this silky red. As the fruit unfolds, smoke, spice and mineral elements emerge, persisting through the long aftertaste. This is harmonious and suave, with the class and complexity worthy of its status as a grand cru. So fleshy, the tannins are buried now. Best from 2014 through 2030. 300 cases imported. |

VM 92 (5/2011): The 2009 Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Perrières is one of the more vibrant, fresh wines in this lineup. Wild cherries, violets, spices and licorice emerge from the glass in a taut, focused expression of Nuits. This shows terrific energy on the wiry finish, where high-toned, floral notes add the final layers of nuance on the mineral drenched close. (Drink between 2017-2027). Antonio Galloni. BH 89 (1/2012): A very ripe yet fairly fresh nose speaks of blue berry and cassis aromas cut with extremely subtle hints of earth and stone, both of which are also reflected by the full-bodied and palate staining flavors that are shaped by relatively fine tannins and solid length. This is a bit too ripe for me personally but the balance is good and overall, this is a quality effort despite being rendered in a style that I have trouble warming up to. (Drink starting 2017). |

VM 91 (3/2012): Good deep red. Musky aroma of raspberry, blueberry, smoke, crushed rock and game. At once sweet and taut, with an impression of lift and energy rare for the vintage. Really lovely fruit here. Fourrier told me he liked the effect of elevage in mostly older casks in 2009. "More new oak would have speeded up the evolution of the wines," he explained. "That would have required using more sulfur dioxide but we still would have lost fruit." BH 89-91 (1/2011): (from Champs Perrières in Brochon.) An earthy and very Gevrey nose offers up dark berry fruit and game-infused aromas that complement well the brooding, robust and complex medium weight plus flavors that possess fine mid-palate density, all wrapped in an intense and driving finish. This is a lovely villages and worth your consideration. Drink 2016+. Outstanding! |

| BH 95 (4/2012): (from a .63 ha parcel.) An overtly sauvage nose features game-inflected aromas of dark berries, plum, floral and earth nuances that also exhibit a hint of smoke. Somewhat unusually, this is also quite finely detailed and while this is openly powerful, it's not at all rustic or tough though it is exceptionally tight and backward at present on the impeccably well-balanced finish. This is even more restrained than the Rugiens and like its stable mate, it's pointless to acquire this without the express intension of forgetting it in your cellar. That said, this offers fantastic upside potential to those who have the patience. Drink 2030+. |

BH 95 (1/2012): (50+ year old vines). A discreet touch of wood spice adds aromatic breadth to the earthy and reserved red berry fruit nose that also offers up a suggestion of the sauvage that carries over to the rich, powerful and admirably concentrated big-bodied flavors that culminate in an impressively long, energetic and youthfully austere finish. This is a big and muscular but not rustic example that will require plenty of cellar time. Drink 2024+. WA 94+ (4/2012): The Clos de Vougeot is gorgeous in 2009. This is an especially dark, brooding Clos Vougeot. Dark red cherries, plums, tar and licorice are some of the many notes that take shape in this explosive, beguiling Burgundy. The sheer energy and drive make the Clos Vougeot a standout. Graphite, mint and licorice linger on the pointed, focused finish. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039. VM 95 (4/2012): Bright medium red. Vibrant aromas of black cherry, licorice and minerals. Seamless, sappy and explosive on the palate, conveying an impression of silkiness without weight. Really explosive mouthfilling perfume here, even if there's plenty in reserve for a long and positive evolution in bottle. The wonderfully fresh, mounting finish features substantial dusty tannins and resounding black cherry and dark chocolate flavors. "The 2009s are to drink anytime," noted Grivot. "Even this Clos Vougeot would be great with grilled beef now." A great vintage for this bottling, which is partly from vines located in the so-so northeast corner of this vineyard. WS 93 (6/2012): Muscular and rigid, exhibiting a well of black cherry, currant and spice flavors, this red gains in both freshness and elegance from attack to finish. Shuts down in the end, with strong tannins and a tactile sensation. Be patient. Best from 2017 through 2035. 135 cases imported. |

WA 94 (4/2012): The 2009 Clos de Vougeot-Musigny is a beautifully centered wine that expresses the personality of the vintage while retaining plenty of freshness. An exotic concoction of racy, floral-infused raspberries, spices, mint, rose petals and hard candy emerges from this seductive, alluring Burgundy. This is a flamboyant wine full of intrigue for the future. The open, radiant finish is backed up by plenty of energy. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029. WS 92 (5/2012): Sandalwood, burning vine cuttings, dill and cherry flavors abound in this beefy red. This is almost lacy in texture, until the firm tannins take over, asserting their grip on the long finish. A masculine style that needs time. Best from 2016 through 2032. 40 cases imported. BH 91-93 (1/2011): ( from a 1.5 ha parcel that was replanted sequentially - 1985, 1988 and 1989; the wine carries the qualifier of Musigni because it comes from a parcel of vines at the top of Clos de Vougeot, directly across from the vineyard of Musigny). Here the less obviously oaked nose runs more toward the red side of the fruit spectrum before merging into rich and seductively textured broad-shouldered flavors that are also blessed with ample amounts of dry extract that renders the supporting tannins almost invisible on the detailed, youthfully austere and solidly persistent finish. Drink 2019+. |

| BH 94 (1/2012): ( from a .7 ha parcel that was partially replanted in 1985 and the remainder in 1989.) A restrained but elegant and very floral nose also speaks of red currant, plum, blue berry and hoisin is trimmed in a relatively curtailed application of oak. The equally reserved but powerful and big-bodied flavors brim with dry extract that renders the dense tannins less obvious than they would otherwise be on the firm and hugely long finish. This is a big but classy effort that should require around 15 years to arrive at its full majority. Drink 2024+. |

| BH 91 (9/2012): This anniversary wine commemorating Jadot's 150th year or operation is a much more interesting effort than the name would suggest. I say this because they have blended together some 19 different Beaune premiers crus. I would start by explaining that when I first opened the bottle it was very closed and reticent and this note is based on a decanted bottle that was kept at cellar temperature while seeing approximately 2 hours of air first so please calibrate your impressions accordingly. The natural ripeness of the 2009 vintage is less apparent with the air though at the same time it accentuates the underlying structure. While the nose is certainly ripe it is not over ripe and is actually quite pretty with attractive red berry fruit, earth and very subtle mineral hints. There is good volume and reasonable concentration to the fleshy and delicious medium-bodied flavors that possess fine intensity and detail, all wrapped in a moderately structured, dusty, mouth coating and firm finish that displays a touch of youthful austerity. This should reward 6 to 8 years of upside and need 2 to 3 before it could at least be drunk with pleasure as it's a bit tight today even with air. Drink 2017+. Outstanding! |

| BH 93 (4/2012): (from the oldest vines of the entire Jadot portfolio of owned vineyards.) A pretty and cool but distinctly ripe mix of upper and lower register aromas includes notes of red currant, wild red berries, earth and stone hints. The attractively energetic and focused medium weight plus flavors possess very fine mid-palate concentration with a silky yet firm mouth feel. There is excellent depth and length to the palate staining finish that is an exercise in harmony and balance though there is some youthful asperity present. Lovely and this should age exceptionally well. Drink 2024+. |

BH 92-94 (5/2011): A ripe yet noticeably reserved and cool nose offers up notes of raspberry, cherry and stone hints. There is good richness to the detailed, intense and vibrant big-bodied flavors that display excellent delineation on the overtly austere, mouth coating and impressively complex finish. This is still very tight and will require plenty of bottle age to shed the considerable tannins though it should be well worth the wait. Drink 2024+. VM 92-94 (2/2011): Good full red. Deeply pitched nose hints at smoke and licorice. Deep, powerful and rich but very closed. Quite full-bodied and ripe but not a sweet style, displaying the medicinal aspect characteristic of the cru. Finishes very long, with substantial chewy tannins. From a crop level of just 32 hectoliters per hectare. This was vinified in a new vat, which is responsible for the impression of smoky oak today, says Lardiere, noting that the wine was chaptalized a half degree. WA 91-94 (5/2011): The 2009 Chambertin flows across the palate with explosive yet silky layers of fruit. The wine continues to build impressively, showing the radiant personality of the vintage. Everything is in the perfect place in this sublime Burgundy. Sweet inner fragrance lingers on the eternal finish. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2034. |

| BH 93 (1/2012): (produced from two large parcels of differing vine age - one that is approximately two-thirds of the blend and is now 45 years of age and a second, smaller group of vines that is approximately 20+ years of age; vinified with 100% whole clusters.) An intensely floral and spicy nose that is wonderfully elegant and admirably pure speaks of red currant, blue berry, game, smoke and warm earth. The silky-textured, precise and mineral-inflected medium-bodied flavors possess copious extract that does a fine job of buffering the very firm tannins and allowing for perfect balance on the mouth coating and impressively persistent finish. A seductive and relatively accessible Clos des Lambrays that should be approachable with only a decade of cellar time yet last for 25 to 40 years. Drink 2021+. |

WA 94-97 (5/2011): The 2009 Clos de la Roche is drop-dead gorgeous. It shows remarkable depth and polish in its elegant, impeccable bouquet and harmonious, layered fruit. This is all finesse, all the way. My notes read: extraordinary! Anticipated maturity: 2019-2034. WS 94 (6/2012): This firm, focused red delivers a beam of cherry and raspberry flavors, along with Asian spice and tea leaf accents. Elegant, with pinpoint tannins and a burst of energy on the lingering aftertaste. Builds from beginning to end. Best from 2016 through 2035. 20 cases imported. VM 94 (3/2012): Good bright medium red. Complex, expressive nose offers blackberry, game, flinty minerality, rose petal and smoky oak. Pure silk and soil tones in the mouth, with harmonious ripe acidity contributing to the impression of Outstanding intensity and early sex appeal. The saline, ripely tannic finish displays superb persistence. A classic expression of Clos de la Roche terroir. Stephen Tanzer. BH 93-95 (5/2011): Reduction. The broad-shouldered flavors are bigger, richer and deeper as the underlying material seems to have endless waves of depth on the extremely ripe and mocha-infused finish that delivers simply huge length. To its credit, this well-endowed effort underscores perfectly the difference between a fine Clos St. Denis and a great Clos de la Roche. Patience will also be required here. Drink 2024+. WA 96 (4/2012): The 2009 Vosne-Romanee Les Reignots explodes onto the palate with dazzling richness and power. Black fruit tar, licorice and smoke are just some of the many aromas and flavors that stain the palate as this dark, brooding Burgundy shows off its pedigree. Layers of fruit build effortlessly to the huge, intense finish. Underlying veins of salinity give the wine its sense of proportion. In 2009 the Reignots is superb Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029. BH 94 (1/2012): (the Liger-Belair vines in this small vineyard run from top to bottom whereas the others are situated in segments; Cathiard is on top, Grivot in the middle and Arnoux at the bottom.) This is not quite as floral as the Brûlees though it is perhaps even a bit fresher with a highly spiced nose that is very Vosne in character. The supple, round and beautifully well-delineated middle weight flavors seem to exude both a liquid minerality and plenty of dry extract that buffers the firm but sophisticated tannins on the tension-infused, focused and highly complex finish. This should be terrific and I really like the impeccable balance of this long and powerful yet strikingly refined effort. Drink 2024+. Outstanding! VM 93 (4/2012): Deep red. Strawberry and mocha aromas display hints of surmaturite. Creamy-sweet but firmly structured, with an almost candied quality to the red fruit and chocolate flavors and big, tongue-coating tannins. Outsized for this bottling but manages to maintain its balance. |

| BH 91-94 (1/2011): (from vines adjacent to those of Domaine de la Romanee Conti in Richebourg proper totaling .31 ha; 80% whole cluster vinification). A notably floral, spicy and very cool nose is trimmed in noticeable but reasonable wood and leads to very rich, round and velvety big-bodied and powerful flavors that culminate in a moderately oaked but strikingly long finish. BH 98 (1/2012): As brilliant the nose of the Amoureuses might be, this ups the ante considerably as this offers fireworks in a glass with its positively kaleidoscopic array of spice, violets and ripe fruit elements that if anything are even fresher. The rich, dense and overtly powerful broad-scaled flavors possess a tight muscularity yet remain elegant and refined with a linear, palate staining and explosive backend that delivers simply huge length. An incredible effort that should live for a very long time indeed. The word fabulous does not do this monument in the making complete justice. Drink 2029+. WA 98 (4/2012): The 2009 Musigny is a huge, structured wine within the context of the domaine. Big, tannins support a highly expressive core of dark fruit, smoke and licorice. This is a decidedly powerful, almost extreme style of Musigny that will require considerable patience to settle down. An explosive, mineral-drenched finish lingers on the palate. The 2009 is flat-out dazzling. Wow. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039. VM 93-95 (2/2011): Good deep red. Very dark, complex aromas of blackberry, violet and licorice, lifted by a peppery nuance; slightly liqueur-like. Then powerful and large-scaled, with confectionery dark berry and pepper flavors saturating the entire mouth. With so much baby fat here, I don't yet find a great deal of detail. Mugnier notes that this is 14.5% alcohol. |

BH 92 (6/2012): I clearly misjudged this because while this is slightly riper than its 2010 counterpart with its mildly exotic yellow fruit aromas of honey, straw, peach and mango, there is genuinely excellent depth to the textured and opulent middle weight flavors that really coat the palate with dry extract. But it's the impressive length that really sets this apart from the 2010 because while this is a powerful vintage for the Clos de la Marechale, it is the moderately firm acid spine that shapes the finish and imparts a real sense of focus. Drink 2014+. Outstanding! WA 92 (4/2012): The 2009 Nuits St. Georges Clos de la Marechale shows the more virile side of Pinot. Black cherries smoke, tar and licorice all come to life in this intense, broad-shouldered wine. Layers of fruit build to the muscular, virile finish. The wine’s masculine personality is quite a contrast to the seductiveness of Mugnier’s other 2009s. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029. VM 89-92 (2/2011): Good deep red-ruby. Blackberry liqueur, minerals and crushed stone on the nose, along with an earthy nuance. Large-scaled, lush and sweet, with a creamy, chocolatey flavor saturating the palate. This big, slightly rough wine benefits from its substantial tannins, which help to balance the sweetness of the alcohol. The pHs of these grapes was the highest to date, noted Mugnier, but as there was so little malic acidity, the post-ML pH is now just a bit higher than average. Mugnier told me there would probably be no Clos des Forches bottling, as he needed to include some of the less-ripe juice in the Clos de la Marechale. (Incidentally, the very promising 2009 Marechale blanc, which had been racked into stainless steel tank in September and will be bottled in January, was dry, powerful, complex and gripping, with excellent energy and acidity for the vintage.) |

BH 91-93 (1/2011): A wonderfully elegant nose of notably ripe red cherry liqueur cut with wet stone and warm earth notes that can also be found on the utterly delicious, concentrated and sappy middle weight flavors that possess excellent depth on the balanced and strikingly persistent finish. Like the Cuvee des Alouettes, I can't ever remember seeing a better vintage for this wine at this early stage. Drink 2017+. Outstanding! WA 90-92 (5/2011): The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes is an immediate wine. The aromatics alone are beautifully open and expressive. This is a really impressive effort and if the palate complexity can eventually match that of the nose, this should be able to achieve, or perhaps even exceed, the upper end of my predicted range. Drink 2024+. WA 91-94 (5/2011): The 2009 Griotte-Chambertin is another big, super-ripe wine loaded with dark fruit. | VM 94+ (4/2012): Good deep red. Very ripe aromas of cherries macerated in alcohol, mocha and wild herbs. Generous, pliant and highly concentrated, with lovely floral, mineral and minty high notes lifting the ripe cherry fruit. Finishes tactile, chewy and very long, with noble, sweet tannins and hints of game and menthol. These vines date back to 1885, but Philippe Roty is quick to point out that there has been a lot of repiquage (replanting of individual vines as they die) along the way. I would not be surprised if this wine merited a higher score 10 or 15 years down the road. |

WA 98+ (4/2012): Roumier’s 2009 Bonnes-Mares is without question one of the wines of the vintage. Firm yet beautifully integrated tannins provide the backdrop for the highly nuanced, expressive aromas and flavors that emerge from the glass. All the elements are in the right place in this extraordinary, moving wine. At times the Bonnes-Mares comes across as very powerful, at other times it is quite sensual. In other words, it is pure magic in the glass. Burgundy fans will flock to the Musigny because of its rarity but there is a very real possibility that the Bonnes-Mares will outshine it over time. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039. WS 98 (6/2012): Complex, fragrant aromas of sandalwood, jasmine and black cherry, with flavors to match, converge in this tightly grained, muscular red. Detailed and pure, showing balance and energy. The lingering finish promises the full potential, leading to a long sweet fruit and mineral aftertaste. Best from 2016 through 2036. 0105 cases imported. BH 96 (1/2012): This is also remarkably fresh with very ripe but not over ripe aromas of cassis, spice, stone and raspberry liqueur. There is a palpable sense of energy running through the rich, powerful and brooding broad-shouldered flavors that benefit from a huge dollop of dry extract that pushes the very firm tannic spine to the background on the explosive and youthfully austere finish that possesses genuinely Outstanding length. I very much like the balance here and this should age effortlessly for decades. Drink: 2027+ VM 95+ (4/2012): Bright medium red. Distinctly blacker on the nose than the Amoureuses, offering scents of blackberry, blueberry and peony. Wonderfully sweet and energetic on the palate, showing terrific stuffing but coming across as tightly coiled today. At once creamy and structured for long aging. Most impressive today on the firmly tannic, palate-staining finish. Roumier compared this to the 1990 version but says this one has firmer tannins. A great and long-lived wine in the making. |

WA 91-93 (5/2011): The 2009 Charmes-Chambertin emerges from the glass with lovely radiance and openness in its ripe, juicy fruit. The Charmes is already rather forward, and at this stage appears to be a relatively early-maturing wine. The oak is also a bit pronounced. Sweet, textured floral notes wrap around the long, polished finish. Rousseau’s Charmes is technically 60% Mazoyeres. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2029. BH 89-92 (1/2011): A high-toned and fresh nose of wild raspberries, cranberries and warm earth aromas gives way to round, supple and unusually sophisticated medium-bodied flavors that possess lovely detail on the persistent finish. This is actually less complex than the Cazetiers though it might catch up in time. Drink: 2019+. VM 87-90 (2/2011): Medium red. High-toned aromas of cherry and rose petal. Very sweet and ripe but not quite fat, conveying a distinct impression of surmaturite Seems higher in volatile acidity than the foregoing samples, with the warmth of the vintage currently overshadowing the terroir Rousseau told me he always picks these vines second, following the Gevrey villages. |

| BH 98 (1/2012): This is also ultra-pure and densely fruited with notes of anise, mint, wet stone and a sauvage hint that introduces intensely earthy and mineral-driven big-bodied flavors that are rich, powerful, serious and densely concentrated, all wrapped in a silky, palate staining, explosive and colossally persistent finish. This is actually relatively expressive and approachable for a young Cham yet the balance and harmony is present for this to age for decades. A brilliant effort and one of the best vintages ever for this justifiably revered wine. Drink 2029+. |

| BH 95 (1/2012): A ripe yet restrained, cool and surprisingly airy given the nature of the vintage displays a highly complex nose of red currant, blue berry, dark berries and ample minerality that continues onto the relatively accessible medium weight plus flavors that possess a plenitude of mouth coating dry extract. This is gorgeously, indeed almost painfully intense with explosive power to the austere and driving finish. This does a slow but inexorable build from the mid-palate and despite all of the muscle, this is actually a wine of balance and refinement. Most impressive. |

| BH 89-91 (1/2011): (from a .53 ha parcel of 45 to 50 year old vines in Jacquines.) This offers a big step up in aromatic elegance with its pure and very spicy mix of red berry liqueur and dark cherry aromas that complement well the seductively textured middle weight flavors blessed with an abundance of dry extract that buffers the moderately firm tannins and coats the palate on the sneaky long finish. Recommended as this is a quintessential Vosne. Drink 2016+. Outstanding! |

WA 97 (4/2012): The 2009 Musigny Vieilles Vignes fleshes out beautifully with endless layers of fruit that caress the palate in stunning style. Sweet floral notes meld into expressive dark red fruit in this mysterious, evocative Burgundy. There is a weightless intensity to the Musigny that is achingly gorgeous. BH 96 (1/2012): A fantastically complex nose offers up aromas of rose petals, violets, mint, cassis, black berry and a plethora of spice nuances that continue onto the intense and remarkably powerful imposingly constructed flavors that are blessed with buckets of dry extract that render the presently rigid tannic spine almost invisible on the impeccably and palate staining finish that seems to persist without end. As was the case from cask, I could still taste this several hours later and if given sufficient cellar time, this should be a very fine vintage for this storied wine. Drink 2029+. VM 95+ (4/2012): Good bright, deep red. Raspberry liqueur, crushed rock and vanillin oak on the suave, subdued nose; shows the greatest lift of these 2009s. Superconcentrated and creamy but light on its feet, displaying terrific energy and sappiness for 2009. Gained in verve with aeration, with high-pitched, tangy flavors of raspberry, pomegranate, flowers and minerals spreading out to saturate the mouth. With its finishing perfume and taste of limestone, this really transcends the vintage. |
