| VM 92-95 (1/2018): (the entire bottom of this vineyard was fried by frost, according to regisseur François Duvivier): Bright, dark red-ruby. Medicinal blueberry and licorice aromas are lifted by a minty high note; less showy and more restrained on the nose than the Taillepieds and Caillerets today. Then wonderfully dense, primary and pure on the palate, but more vertical and less opulent than the Taillepieds and Caillerets. Strong mineral energy accentuates the impression of vibrancy. VM 94 (10/2019): The 2016 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru has a classic, undergrowth infused bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, hints of stewed black tea emerging with time, tobacco and rose petal. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, succulent and juicy with a fleshy, almost Volnay-like finish that is very appealing. This is a well crafted and comparatively approachable Pommard. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. (Drink between 2021-2040). Neal Martin.
BH 93 (3/2023): An agreeably fresh and still relatively primary nose freely reveals its aromas of both red and dark berries, newly turned earth and a hint of wood spice. There remains very good vibrancy to the velvet-textured medium-bodied flavors that flash a touch of bracing bitter pit fruit character on the still firm and sneaky long finale. This balanced effort is coming along nicely and while it could certainly be enjoyed now with 30 minutes of air, I would be inclined to hold it for another 5ish plus years first. (Drink starting 2028). |

| VM 93-95 (1/2018): (just 20 hectoliters per hectare produced; 50% new oak): Medium bright red. Denser, darker and more serious on the nose than the other Volnay premier crus at this address, offering mineral-driven scents of black cherry, spices and licorice. Wonderfully elegant and fine-grained, combining Outstanding volume and an impression of finesse and weightlessness. Conveys a small-berry concentration and near-perfect balance, finishing with refined tannins and terrific length and lift. This stunning Volnay is wonderfully approachable today but I suspect it will shut down a bit by the time it's bottled and benefit from five to eight years of cellaring. Stephen Tanzer. |

| VM 91-93 (1/2018): (from four parcels of vines between 40 and 60 years of age; fruit in the lower section of the vineyard was wiped out by the frost): Healthy medium red. Slightly reduced nose conveys and medicinal dark raspberry aroma. Then fine-grained and graceful in the mouth, conveying an impression of delicacy to the flavors of raspberry, currant and flowers. Brooding aromas of dark fruits and menthol. Chalky and penetrating but youthfully tight, conveying a stronger impression of medicinal reserve than the Volnay Les Caillerets. A distinctly masculine, classic Pommard, juicy but imploded in the early going. The mounting finish features firm, mouth-saturating tannins, hints of spices and white pepper, and savory soil suggestions. JS 94-95 (2/2018): The chalky and stony notes are intermingled with pastry and red to dark cherries, all leading to a palate that shows good acidity, impressive depth and weight of tannins. A cool vintage expression with more intensity at the finish. This will age very well. Try from 2024.
BH 93-95 (4/2018): Very, very generous wood treatment is sufficiently toasty to presently dominate the otherwise layered nose of dark cherry, raspberry, earth and sauvage-inflected aromas. There is superb concentration, power and richness to the big-bodied flavors that possess excellent reserves of dry extract that helps to buffer the exceptionally firm tannic spine shaping the superbly long mineral-driven finish. This is at once impressive as hell but it's also very woody and while the underlying material appears to be more than sufficient to eventually integrate the oak, it will require time for this to happen. Drink 2036+. Don't miss!
VM 92-95 (1/2018): (these high-altitude vines produced a normal crop in 2016): Moderately saturated dark red. Sexy if slightly reduced aromas of black raspberry, tarte au prune and game, with some new oak showing. Very rich, dense and pliant, conveying a distinctly relaxed quality for the vintage. This plump, large-scaled grand cru finishes with superb restrained sweetness, noteworthy finesse of tannins, and serious building length, with its lightly saline black raspberry fruit complemented by an almost chocolatey ripeness. | NM 93-95 (12/2017): The 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru comes from a 0.65-hectare parcel next to those of Anne Gros. Matured in 50% new oak, it has quite a healthy, deep ruby color. The bouquet had just a little reduction, but underneath there is plenty of tightly knit blackberry, cranberry and redcurrant fruit, chalk and light incense aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, vibrant red and black fruit with just a faint licorice edge, not enormously long in the mouth but it fans out with style. Give this 3 or 4 years in bottle, and you will have a great Clos de Vougeot on your hands. |

BH 89-92 (4/2018): An expressive nose speaks of essence of raspberry, earth, sauvage and a hint of wood. The dense super-ripe flavors brim with dry extract that coats the palate and imparts a velvety mouth feel to the mocha, bitter cherry pit and slightly warm finale. This muscular and mildly rustic effort is a very ripe 2016 yet the overall impression is one of freshness and energy.
VM 89-92 (1/2018): Good dark red. Very ripe scents of dark raspberry and chocolate. Quite powerful but youthfully bound-up, with the impression of chocolatey richness carrying through the palate. Finishes with big but fine-grained tannins and a serious structure. Perhaps a bit overconcentrated but not out of whack. This wine will clearly need time in bottle to absorb some of its baby fat. Here the nose plays on the edge of reduction and while it doesn't completely mask the floral-scented nose of dark berries and earth, it does render it less expressive. The rich and notably denser medium-bodied flavors also flash a lovely minerality that adds a sense of lift to the much firmer, even robust finish that is presently somewhat youthfully austere. Patience required but this should ultimately be excellent. Drink 2028+. Outstanding! |

WA 95 (1/2019): One of the more reserved wines in the range, the 2016 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru unfurls in the glass with a youthfully reticent bouquet of dark wild berry fruit, licorice, coniferous forest floor, grilled meats and spices. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with an elegantly satiny attack and a deep, immensely concentrated mid-palate that's framed by ripe tannins and brisk acids, concluding with a long and expansive finish. This is an understated but profound Latricières which numbers among Faiveley's best in 2016.
BH 93-95 (1/2018): (from a very large 1.21 ha parcel.) Here too the wood treatment is subtle yet just prominent enough to warrant pointing out on the cool, pure and notably more sauvage nose of both red and dark wild berry and earth scents. There is a really lovely sense of underlying tension suffusing the much more mineral-driven middle weight flavors that are not quite as rich but notably more precise on the chiseled and wonderfully refined finish. Textbook. Drink 2031+. Don't miss!
VM 92-95 (1/2018): (from very old vines; no frost here): Healthy dark red with ruby tones. Aromas of dark berries and coffee with cream on top. At once densely packed and perfumed in the mouth, with crushed raspberry and cranberry flavors lifted by violet. Spreads out horizontally on the back end, finishing with terrific class and ineffable rising perfume of spices and flowers. The tannins here are linear and firm but not hard. Then fine-grained, suave and sweet, with flavors of black cherry, blackberry and licorice pastille. Considering the wine's medicinal coolness, this midweight is also quite ripe. BH 90-92 (1/2018): Moderate wood influence can be found on the overtly sauvage-inflected red currant, plum and earth-scented nose. The supple and round medium-bodied flavors possess a velvet-textured mid-palate that is really quite seductive though the natural muscle of a Gevrey 1er shows up on the saline and ever-so-mildly rustic finale. This quality effort is firm enough to require at least 5+ years of cellaring and it will need at least a decade to arrive at its apogee. (Drink starting 2026) |

NM 92-94 (12/2017): The 2016 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru les Pruliers, aged in 20% new oak like Gouges’ other premier crus, has more red fruit on the nose than the Clos des Porrets, a little ferrous in style with subtle damp earthy aromas developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin that feels a little chalkier and sharper at the moment. This is replete with wonderful freshness and tension toward the finish that is tensile and linear, captivating from start to finish. Superb.
BH 91-93 (1/2018): (a 2 ha parcel with a mix of 80% 75+ year old vines and the remainder of 15 to 20 year old vines.) A beautifully layered nose offers up notes of both red and black pinot fruit, spice, warm earth and evident sauvage nuances. The rich, delicious and caressing medium weight plus flavors possess a velvety mid-palate mouthfeel that contrasts somewhat with the very firm, saline and lingering finish. This is muscular but not really rustic. Drink 2028+. Outstanding! |

NM 92-94 (12/2017): The 2016 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru les Roncières has a delightful bouquet: red cherries, strawberry, a touch of black truffle and smoke, all understated at first but unfolding with each swirl of the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. This is extremely pure and tensile, strangely not unlike a Morey-Saint-Denis in terms of structure, and you can feel the chalkiness coming through on the marine-tinged, saline finish. Excellent—and I suspect this will be very long lasting. There are just five barrels instead of the usual 11 due to frost.
BH 91-93 (1/2018): A slightly fresher if earthier and less obvious spicy nose displays notes of essence of red currant and a discreet floral touch. There is a sleek muscularity to the much more mineral-inflected middle weight flavors that deliver excellent punch and persistence on the beautifully well-balanced and complex finale. This is quite firm and a bit youthfully austere as well but I suspect that the impeccable balance will allow it to be enjoyable young. Drink 2028+. Outstanding!
VM 90-92 (1/2018): Slightly reduced and a bit lower-pitched than the Rouges, offering aromas of black raspberry complicated by soil tones. Plusher, sweeter and more pliant on entry than the Rouges, then juicy and alive in the middle palate but a bit inexpressive in the early going. Tightens up on the back end, finishing with a firm edge. A bit disorganized today and in need of further elevage. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 93 (10/2019): The 2016 Echézeaux Les Loachausses Grand Cru has a very detailed and focused bouquet. My instinct tells me that this is already beginning to close down compared to its showing from barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. There is a fine bead of acidity, silky smooth in texture with a caressing white pepper tinged, black cherry and bilberry finish. There is still a little oak to be subsumed, but given the frost that affected this vineyard, this is a great success for Anne Gros. Tasted at the Domaine Direct Tasting in London. (Drink between 2021-2042) Neal Martin.
WA 93 (1/2019): The 2016 Echezeaux Grand Cru exhibits aromas of dark berries, baking chocolate, grilled squab, Asian spices and a subtle framing of toasty new oak, followed by a full-bodied, ample and expansive palate with a nicely layered, concentrated core, juicy acids and fine structuring tannins. Fifty percent of the crop was lost to spring frosts, so it's no surprise that the wine is deeper and more intense than the 2017 rendition. |

The rich, full-bodied, naturally sweet and lightly mineral-suffused flavors possess good freshness and a seductive texture before culminating in an impressively complex, driving and palate staining finish. This is more refined than it usually is yet a wine that doesn't lack for power and punch. In short, this excellent effort is promising but notably backward. |

Distinctly darker and more medicinal on the nose than the Musigny, hinting at blueberry, blackberry and licorice. Then very ripe and densely packed on the palate, with its flavors of black fruits, medicinal cherry, brown spices and crushed rock lifted by a floral topnote and framed by insidious ripe acidity. Finishes with broad, dusty tannins and terrific lift. This wonderfully savory, super-concentrated Bonnes-Mares is actually remarkably sweet and sexy today, but it's hard to believe that it won't shut down in bottle at some point. Stephen Tanzer.

The flavors add wild strawberry, incense and kirsch notes, while remaining persistent on the kaleidoscopic finish. Feels tense now, yet should develop nicely over time. A mineral element lingers. WA 93 (1/2019): The 2016 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot) is showing well from bottle, unwinding in the glass with a youthfully primary bouquet of ripe cherries, red berries, candied peel and cassis that's subtly framed by some nicely integrated new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and satiny textured, its broad-shouldered chassis of impressively fine-grained tannin cloaked in a succulent, even tangy core of vibrant fruit, concluding with a long and nicely defined finish. While the structure is sufficiently refined that drinking a glass now isn't a brutalizing experience, a decade of patience is recommended.
VM 91-93 (1/2018): (Jadot's vines in the lower part of the clos produced a normal yield in 2016): Bright, dark red. Medicinal red cherry, licorice, herbs and a strong element of spicy oak on the nose. Concentrated, savory and flavorful, communicating an impression of medicinal reserve. A classic, rather old-fashioned, masculine style of Clos Vougeot but not rustic or hard. Still, its tight, dusty tannins will require extended cellaring. Technical director Frederic Barnier believes that Jadot's Clos Vougeot has been getting steadily softer, as this site has benefited from climate change; he also noted that he has not changed the vinification. Still, this is a seriously tannic, rather saline wine without any easy sweetness. Stephen Tanzer.
BH 92-94 (4/2018): An intensely earthy nose of a wide range of red berry aromas is surrounded by an abundance of menthol and wood scents. The muscular and sizably-scaled flavors possess a rounded and relatively supple mid-palate that contrasts considerably with the robust, serious, rustic and exceptionally firm finish. I like the depth as well as the persistence of this youthfully austere finish that makes clear that this too is going to require extended cellaring. Drink 2036+. |

VM 92-94 (1/2018): (the crop was reduced 30% by the frost): Bright, full, dark red. Some very ripe notes to the aromas of cherry, raspberry coulis, strawberry and smoky minerals (technical director Barnier believes that Jadot was the last of the five owners of Clos Saint-Jacques to harvest in 2016). A step up in creaminess of texture from the foregoing Gevrey premier crus, but with terrific precision and acidity for all its density and richness. This very deep Clos Saint-Jacques conveys a restrained sweetness and lovely inner-mouth floral lift. While the medium weight flavors do not have the same size and power of the Clos des Chênes, they are notably finer with a sleek muscularity and terrific length on the highly refreshing and energetic finish. | BH 92-95 (1/2018): (from a .16 ha parcel in Charmes proper of vines planted in 1885 that have never been pulled up though Roty points out that all those that have died over the years have been replanted.) Much more moderate, though hardly invisible, oak influence can be found on the notably ripe aromas of cassis, black cherry, plum and a panoply of spice and earth elements. The detailed, powerful and punchy imposingly-scaled flavors possess first-rate mid-palate density as the sappy dry extract coats the mouth on the very firmly structured finish that flashes both better depth and persistence. Excellent quality though note well that this is very serious and will need extended aging. Drink 2033+. |

Here too there is a background hint of wood framing the super-fresh if cool and restrained aromas of liqueur-like red cherry, rose petal and subtle spice whiffs. There is excellent concentration to the succulent yet well-detailed and intensely mineral-inflected flavors that are blessed with plenty of sappy dry extract that also serves to buffer the moderately firm core of tannins shaping the beautifully persistent finish that also flashes a suggestion of warmth. This is terrific and should age gracefully yet the copious level of sap should permit it to drink reasonably well young too. Drink 2028+. Outstanding! |

| VM 92-94 (1/2018): Bright red-ruby. Slightly medicinal aromas of blackberry, licorice and violet complicated by a rocky quality. Pungent, tangy and high-pitched, offering a very fine-grained texture to its flavors of cassis, black cherry and violet; aeration brought a slightly less black note of raspberry and sexy savory soil tones. From vines on very shallow soil just across the Route des Grands Crus from Chambertin, this wine offers terrific punch and building sweetness. Both these vines and those in Mazoyères-Chambertin were planted shortly after World War II but a small part of the Charmes was replanted in 1998. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 93 (10/2020): The 2016 Clos de Vougeot Vieilles Vignes, Francois Labet's old-vine cuvée, is dark, dense and powerful. Black cherry, plum, gravel, spice and licorice give the 2016 a real feeling of gravitas. The Vieilles Vignes is an imposing, brooding Burgundy. It comes across as heavy and overextracted. I prefer the straight bottling for its greater aromatic depth and finesse. (Drink between 2026-2041). Antonio Galloni.
BH 93 (1/2019): Here too there is a pretty maraschino cherry note sitting atop the slightly riper array of super-fresh plum, black cherry, cassis and violet-scented aromas that are again trimmed in enough wood to warrant commenting on. The naturally sweet and beautifully concentrated broad-shouldered flavors brim with sappy dry extract before culminating in an overtly powerful and driving finish where the intensity really builds from the mid-palate. The old vines are very much apparent and this should also age effortlessly for years. (Drink starting 2031). |

However there is excellent freshness and underlying tension to the superbly well-concentrated and intensely mineral drive big-bodied flavors that flash plenty of classic Chambertin muscle on the youthfully austere and very backward finish that is explosively long. This is seriously good and the density is such that this is pretty much a block of stone today. Patience, and a lot of it, ist going to be needed here but if you have it, this is potentially a great Chambertin. Drink 2036+. Don't miss! |
