| VM 89-92 (6/2017): The 2015 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze shows a lot of new oak today, which masks the fruit. But there is good depth, power and richness. Here, too, the wine gives the impression it needs time to fully come together. The new oak is a bit prominent at this stage, but there is good depth of fruit in the background. BH 91-93 (1/2024): Moderate wood influence can be found on the exuberantly spicy and smoky nose of mostly dark currant and violet scents. There is good energy to the delicious if not especially dense middleweight flavors that conclude in a firm finale that exudes focused power as well as a touch of warmth. (Drink starting 2032).
VM 91-93 (1/2024): The 2022 Echézeaux Les Loachausses Grand Cru (not the easiest lieu-dit to pronounce but is actually a monopole of the Gros family) is the most taciturn on the nose amongst Anne Gros' cuvées. There is a touch of crushed stone that develops in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a lot of sucrosity on the entry. It has fine depth and is quite linear, and maybe it needs to muster a little more complexity and terroir expression on the finish. I'm sure it will. (Drink between 2027-2042). Neal Martin. |

VM 94-96 (1/2024): The 2022 Grands-Echézeaux Grand Cru is the maiden vintage under the Anne Gros label, the parcel having previously been vinified by Bernard Gros (Gros Frère & Soeur) under a fermage. It has a very well-defined bouquet, dark berry fruit intermixed with crushed limestone and wilted rose petals, understated at first and only gradually gaining intensity. The medium-bodied palate has filigree tannins, tensile from the start, with a keen thread of acidity. It fans out wonderfully towards the finish with a saline aftertaste. Precision is the keyword here rather than power. Superb. (Drink between 2028-2052). Neal Martin.
BH 91-94 (1/2024): This is also aromatically attractively airy, pretty and cool with its array of red cherry, raspberry, sandalwood and exotic tea scents. I very much like the seductive texture of the solidly powerful medium weight flavors that display better power and length on the dusty and youthfully austere finale. This could use better depth but more should reasonably develop over time. (Drink starting 2034). |

| BH 93 (4/2015): A brooding yet softly perfumed nose features a pretty mix of both red and dark berry aromas that are just beginning to display some secondary development along with background nuances of spice and exotic tea. The delicious and relatively accessible medium-bodied flavors exude a discreet minerality on the complex, balanced and lingering finish where the buried structure arrives just at the end. For my taste this definitely hasn't yet arrived at its peak though the excellent mid-palate density would easily allow this beauty to be enjoyed now. That said I would advise holding this for another 5ish years first. In sum, this is altogether lovely as about the only nit is a finishing hint of warmth. (Drink starting 2021) |

| VM 94 (5/2022): There are five instead of eight barrels of the 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru, which is still more than there will be next year. This takes its time to open, revealing wild strawberry and black cherry scents entwined with hints of graphite and crushed stone. The palate is framed by very fine tannins, the palate sweet and concentrated with dark cherries, fig and damson. | VM 95 (10/2024): The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru left me perplexed out of barrel, but it proves its mettle in bottle. It has quite an intense bouquet with more black than red fruit, a little musky in quality, though it is well-defined. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. With a mixture of red and black fruit, brown spices and tobacco, this Clos de Vougeot is well-structured with a controlled, focused, sapid finish. Very fine. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting. WA 93-95 (1/2022): The 2020 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru is more ethereal, unwinding in the glass with scents of raspberries, violets, rose petals and sweet soil tones. Full-bodied, taut and concentrated, it's deep and multidimensional, with lively acids and a layered core of ripe fruit, framed by fine, powdery tannins.
BH 92-95 (4/2022): Ripe if restrained aromas of violet, plum liqueur and dark berry coulis are trimmed in hints of spice and the sauvage. The super-sleek and almost painfully intense large-scaled flavors brim with both minerality and sappy dry extract that serves to buffer the dense if relatively fine-grained tannins shaping the hugely long, serious and youthfully austere finale. This is an imposingly scaled Clos du Roi that should age gracefully for the better part of the next two decades. (Drink starting 2037).
VM 91-93 (12/2021): The 2020 Corton Clos-du-Roi Grand Cru, containing 100% whole bunch, has the most perfumed and floral of the trio of Corton’s from the Domaine, seductive, quite feminine. The palate is fleshy and rounded, very smooth and quite polished with hints of mocha and dark chocolate towards the finish. This is deceptively approachable - give it five years in bottle to fully come together. (Drink between 2025-2040). Neal Martin. |

JM 97 (11/2023): In bottle. Made as three cuvees, then assembled. A rich mid purple with a deliciously heady bouquet, the sumptuous side of dark raspberry, perfumed yet precise, purple fruit with some redder layers beneath, a little white pepper spice, multiple layers of fruit, very engaging with just a very slight youthful bitterness. Irreproachable.
BH 94 (1/2024): An even spicier and more floral-suffused nose is comprised mostly by blue pinot fruit and discreet earth wisps. The succulent, refined and vibrant medium-bodied flavors aren't especially concentrated though they do possess impressive power on the beautifully long and equally well-balanced finale. This is a wine that is certainly built to repay extended keeping but it's not so compact that it couldn't be reasonably approached after only 5 to 7 years. |

BH 94 (5/2008): 94 at its best. I have had this wine many times and it has always been one of my favorite '91s. Unfortunately, a number of bottles tasted within the last 3 years were already on the decline, having lost that wonderful velvety quality that I once so much admired. While not unpleasant, it's clear that these bottles are not what they should be as there is a toastiness that comes up on the finish and renders it ever so slightly bitter. However, a bottle tasted in Los Angeles that was air freighted from the Domaine only 3 weeks prior was simply Outstanding with a wonderful nose of exotic spices and subtle yet seductive game and smoky hints followed by rich, warm and pure flavors of superb depth and length with plenty of finishing velvet. As the note suggests, I have encountered significant bottle variation with scores ranging from 87 to 94. Drink now.
WA 93 (12/1993): Wealthy collectors should not miss the opportunity to see whether the 1991 equals or surpasses the 1990 Musigny-Vieilles Vignes made at the Comte de Vogue. The saturated, dense purple color is magnificent. The big, yet unformed bouquet of framboise, cassis, vanillin, and minerals suggests the wine is loaded. It is. Powerful, rich, concentrated, and marvelously clean and pure, this irrefutably impressively endowed, large-scaled red burgundy exhibits a Medoc-like austerity and structure, as well as a squeaky clean, international style. It will be interesting to see what develops over the next 15-20 years. Do not drink it before the turn of the century; it should last an uncommonly long time for modern day burgundy. Very impressive! |

BH 93 (10/2005): Extravagant, very ripe spice aromas explode from the glass with remarkable complexity that frame superbly elegant, gorgeously textured flavors that are intense and vibrant. This is really quite powerful for the vintage and incredibly long yet remains classy and fine. It is not especially big or dense as de Vogüe Musigny goes but is tautly muscular and defined. Extremely impressive for the vintage. Drink 2010+.
WA 93 (6/2003): There is an enthralling sappy richness to the floral and blackberry-scented 2000 Musigny. Supremely elegant, it is not quite as dense as the 2001 yet reveals Outstanding depth, purity, and concentration. Lush, stony red and black fruits are interspersed with violets and tangy raspberries in its exceptionally long, expressive, plump character. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2012.
VM 92+ (4/2003): Saturated dark red. Deep, nuanced nose combines dark fruits, minerals and underbrush. Sweet and highly concentrated but tight and backward, even a bit sullen today; fruit and stone flavors are quite primary for the vintage. Finishes with substantial broad tannins and very good grip. May ultimately merit an even higher rating. |

VM 95-97 (1/2023): The 2021 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru underwent a picked piecemeal from the 30 different plots to find the best order that actually was linked to vine age. It has a gorgeous bouquet with brambly red fruit, loam, blood oranges and subtle graphite aromas. Superb delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, fresh citrus like acidity, tensile and focused. This is a very classic, mineral-driven Musigny with surfeit of salinity that gets the saliva flowing on the finish. So bright on the finish. Neal Martin.
JM 95-97 (11/2022): Three tanks were made, in order of picking, then assembled as there is no terroir logic to them, though this has changed for 2022. A fine bright and reasonably deep purple. Classy with just a touch of pepper. Less immediately compelling that some previous vintages, but it is growing steadily in the glass. There is a huge volume of red and black fruit intertwined with a fresh mineral streak running through the middle, supplying excellent length to complete the job. Splendid stuff! A firmer finish but there is plenty of time for that to resolve. Drink from 2030-2040.
BH 92-95 (1/2023): This is compositionally similar to the Chambolle "1er", but the brooding nose only grudgingly displays both notably better complexity and more floral nuances as well a background hint of kirsch. As is always the case, there is markedly more size, weight and density to the bigger-bodied and notably more powerful flavors that conclude in a very backward, compact and even more mineral-driven finish. This is still in need of additional élevage, but it should ultimately be quite impressive. Drink 2036+. |

BH 94 (1/2013): (produced from two large parcels of differing vine age - one that is approximately two-thirds of the blend and is now 45 years of age and a second, smaller group of vines that is approximately 20+ years of age; vinified with 100% whole clusters.) A highly expressive and very broad nose of superb aromatic complexity that includes earth, game, spice, red currant, plum, violets and a hint of the sauvage. The round and supple flavors possess outstanding detail and while the complexity doesn't quite match that of the exquisite nose, it's not far behind and this culminates in a beautifully balanced and harmonious finish that delivers striking persistence. I also had a chance to retaste the 2009 and it is bigger, richer and more powerful while the 2010 is much more of a wine of finesse and refinement. In a word, beautiful. Drink 2022+.
VM 93+ (3/2013): Good bright, deep red. Very closed but pure and stylish nose hints at cherry liqueur and spices, with elements of mulch and pepper emerging with air. Dense, tactile and large-boned, but with its flesh somewhat suppressed today. Finishes saline, concentrated and thick, with substantial granular tannins. This needs at least six to eight more years in bottle to expand, and may well deserve an even higher score by 2020. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 94 (3/2016): Medium-deep red. Complex, high-pitched perfume melds blackberry, cherry, wild herbs, black pepper, underbrush and dried flowers. Classic Clos des Lambrays in its combination of red and black fruits, dried flowers, minerals, spices, licorice and earth and its pungent inner-mouth energy. This wine actually reminded me of a 1978! Finishes with firm, noble tannins and terrific piquant length. This is actually easier to taste today than the village wine but should evolve very slowly. Stephen Tanzer.
WA 93 (9/2016): Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru is a divisive wine, not one for those seeking layer upon layer of fruit. It is more mature in appearance than its peers, perhaps missing the fruit intensity one would anticipate from a grand cru of this stature. There is something a little "dusty attic" here although that ebbs away with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly leafy entry, gentle and elegant, full of personality. It is missing the weight and volume that a more benevolent vintage would have lent and it does not quite possess the structure or substance to suggest long-term. Yet, it remains a well-crafted and to put it prosaically, is absolutely delicious.
BH 92-94 (1/2015): (produced from two large parcels of differing vine age - one that is approximately two-thirds of the blend and is now 50+ years of age and a second, smaller group of vines that is approximately 25+ years of age.) Here too there is gentle wood setting off a similar if more complex nose that displays more prominent floral and spice scents. There is very good volume to the utterly delicious medium weight and wonderfully vibrant flavors that possess really fine delineation before culminating in a mineral-inflected, saline and focused finish. I very much admire the sleek mouth feel as well as the impeccable balance. Lovely juice that is moderately structured and a bit less youthfully austere than usual. Drink 2025+. |

WA 93-95 (12/2015): The 2014 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru is matured in 50% new oak and is 100% whole bunch fruit. It is blessed with a winsome bouquet. As usual, there is something very natural, unimposing and refined on the nose: blackberry and briary, a hint of graphite, a subtle leafiness maybe, and yet delineated and very pure. The palate is lively and energetic with crisp tannin, black rather than red fruit, linear and very classic in style with what you might call a "cool" marine-influenced finish that has fine salinity. What a great Clos des Lambrays that will put a smile on the face of those that adore refined Burgundy.
VM 92-94 (1/2016): (Taupenot makes less than a barrel of wine annually from a tiny parcel planted in 1975 at the bottom of the Clos des Lambrays): Slightly hazy medium red. A deep earthy perfume complements aromas of raspberry, spices and dried flowers. A bit imploded but surprisingly fresh and vibrant on the palate, with flavors of raspberry and flowers tweaked by a pungent blood orange note. The very long, slowly mounting finish features slightly tight tannins, a subtle saline quality and considerable finesse."This is never a powerful style, but more about length and charm," noted Taupenot. Still, this beauty will need at least seven or eight years of bottle aging.
BH 91-94 (1/2016): (produced from two large parcels of differing vine age - one that is approximately two-thirds of the blend and is now 50+ years of age and a second, smaller group of vines that is approximately 25+ years of age; made with 100% whole clusters.) A notably spicy, fresh, cool and floral nose displays mostly red berry fruit scents that are trimmed in discreet wood notes. There is excellent cut and definition to the nicely rich and attractively textured flavors that culminate in a presently austere finale though I doubt that austerity will persist. This is a relatively fine and forward vintage for Clos des Lambrays and one that should be approachable after only 7 to 8 years of bottle age. Drink 2026+. |

VM 90+ (3/2009): Bright, dark red. Black cherry, smoked meat, mocha and underbrush on the soil-inflected nose. Lush, broad and sweet, with noteworthy complexity of flavor. A substantial wine that finishes with serious tannins. Needs at least five to seven years of patience.
WA 91 (12/2009): The tender, ripe cherry fruit; marrowy, clean meatiness; and subtle creaminess of its immediate palate impact mark the Dujac 2006 Charmes-Chambertin as a contrast with the corresponding Combettes. Vanilla and licorice add allure. This lives up to its name until a point where some faintly drying tannin creeps into its finish. That said, it should prove memorably perfumed and delicious in the proper contexts over the next 4-5 years.
BH 90-93 (1/2008): (from both Charmes proper and Mazoyères). This is shut down tight with thick reduction blocking any reasonable evaluation of the nose though the relatively big and weighty flavors are concentrated, serious and solidly structured. VM 90+ (3/2009): Bright, dark red. Black cherry, smoked meat, mocha and underbrush on the soil-inflected nose. Lush, broad and sweet, with noteworthy complexity of flavor. A substantial wine that finishes with serious tannins. Needs at least five to seven years of patience.
WA 91 (12/2009): The tender, ripe cherry fruit; marrowy, clean meatiness; and subtle creaminess of its immediate palate impact mark the Dujac 2006 Charmes-Chambertin as a contrast with the corresponding Combettes. Vanilla and licorice add allure. This lives up to its name until a point where some faintly drying tannin creeps into its finish. That said, it should prove memorably perfumed and delicious in the proper contexts over the next 4-5 years.
BH 90-93 (1/2008): (from both Charmes proper and Mazoyères). This is shut down tight with thick reduction blocking any reasonable evaluation of the nose though the relatively big and weighty flavors are concentrated, serious and solidly structured. This seems quite promising as the underlying material is impressive but note that this will not be a precocious example of Charmes. Drink 2016+. |

BH 93 (10/2001): This is a wine that I have enjoyed many times and it is one of those rare grands crus that has shown magnificently from day one and has never missed a beat since. Earthy yet exquisitely complex nose showing more than a trace of secondary aromas. The flavor profile is deep and broad with sap, wet earth, iron, minerals and a pure, intense, terrifically long finish. An Outstanding Clos de la Roche that is enjoyable now though it will continue to hold for many years. Drink 2001-2012.
WA 89 (8/1995): The light to medium ruby-colored Clos de la Roche offers an earthy, mineral, and sweet berry fruit-scented nose. What follows is a wine of moderate constitution, undeniable elegance, and graceful Pinot fruit. Some hard tannin is noticeable in the finish, but it is not cause for concern. This wine should age gracefully for a decade or more, offering complex aromatics, and sweet, gamey Pinot fruit in a medium-bodied format. |

BH 90 (5/2007): As elegant and pure as this wine usually is, the '89 doesn't seem to have quite the freshness that it should and while the rapidly maturing aromas are typical, which is to say there is plenty of earth, spice and game, it lacks real vibrancy. The flavors, by contrast, are rich, structured, beautifully textured and complex and the backend offers solid length. That said, 1989 is merely a very good vintage by the superb standards of this wine. Consistent notes.
VM 87 (9/2018): The 1989 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru frankly pales against the majestic 1990. It feels a little under-nourished on the nose, a vein of greenness that cannot be ignored. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly coarse tannin, improving midway towards the rigid, menthol-tinged finish, but you cannot help feeling that it falls away a little short. I was not impressed when I first tasted this in 2010 and those sentiments remain. Tasted at the Roumier vertical in London. Neal Martin. |

VM 84 (6/2020): The 2004 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru offers light, smudged mulberry and decayed leaf scents on a nose that pales against Christophe Roumier’s other vintages. There is something quite Oriental about the aromas, (hoisin emerges with time) but also the greenness that I remember when I first tasted it from barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannins. Quite a hollow Bonnes-Mares, to be frank, ending in a severely attenuated and raw finish. Tasted at Sarah Marsh’s 2003/2004 tasting in London. Neal Martin.
BH 90 (4/2007): A discreet hint of wood spice frames a potent mix of violet, red and black fruits, earth, herb aromas and hints of game that give way to textured, sappy, firm and intense flavors that are both serious and firmly structured. This will require time to come around though there is reasonably good phenolic ripeness and, in the context of the vintage, solid finishing power and pop. Drink 2012+. |

This is unapologetically built-to-age and a wine that's going to need at least a decade first. Drink 2035+.
WA 95+ (1/2020): Another of the highlights of the range is the 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, a striking wine that soars from the glass with notes of raspberries, red berries, rose petals, sweet spices, violets and forest floor. On the palate, it's full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with striking cut and definition, concluding with a long, mineral finish. This is an exquisitely refined Bonnes-Mares that is worth a special effort to seek out. |

There is a lovely sense of delicacy and refinement to the reasonably concentrated flavors that possess a gorgeous acid/fruit/tannin balance on the hugely long finale where a touch of wood slowly emerges. This is not what I would describe as a classic Bonnes Mares but it is nonetheless a gorgeous wine, indeed calling it a Bonnes Mares of finesse would be apt. Drink 2035+.
JM 94-96 (10/2024): A crimson ruby. A little wilder than the Chambertin duo, a little plummier, softly ripe raspberries, a range of interesting complex aromatics. Builds fascinatingly on the palate, possibly a higher pH but thoroughly rewarding, with a complex texture as well, multi-layered, and very long. Drink from 2032-2040. |

This does though need more depth so at least some cellaring is in order. Dink 2032+.
JM 89-92 (10/2025): Medium crimson in colour. I am needing to coax out the nose which is not as sublimely explosive than it has been in certain riper vintages. Tougher and tighter with grainier tannins, more difficult. The acidity pokes through. Not the same level as the last two Volnay 1ers Crus, nor indeed up to its usual standard as this is often a sublime cuvée chez Henri Boillot. |

WA 92 (2/2014): The 1982 Echezeaux Grand Cru from Henri Jayer is one of those wines where I am so glad to have been able to assess it over the course of a couple of hours, here, at a splendid lunch in Hong Kong. This mercurial wine commences with a typical 1982 nose: a little diffuse and ferrous, musky with Girolles and black truffle. The palate is nicely balanced but rustic and loose-knit, and over the course of 60 minutes those threads tend to loosen and it feels like it is falling apart. Then it miraculously seems to embroider itself back together, like a ragdoll coming back to life. It gains cohesion, weight and intensity, and by the end of the lunch it is probably drinking better than ever. This is quite an astonishing, cerebral wine.
BH 87 (4/2018): I have had mixed luck with the Jayer '82s over the years with some bottles showing quite well in the context of what is typical for the vintage and others showing moderately funky aromas that appear to be rot-tinged and this most recent bottle was unfortunately one of them. Moderate bricking. A sous-bois dominated nose is funky and vegetal with a hint of barnyard. On the plus side the mid-palate texture of the middle weight flavors is appealing but the acceptably long finish is slightly dry and warm. Tasted twice in the last year and while both bottles were certainly drinkable, it would be fair to say that neither was special. (Drink starting 2018). |

BH 94 (1/2016): A background application of wood is sufficiently subtle to allow the notably spicy and ripe yet quite cool aromas of both red and black pinot fruit, herbal tea and floral elements to shine. There is excellent volume to the intense and tautly muscular middle weight plus flavors that culminate in an explosively long, mouth coating and moderately austere finale where a hint of bitter cherry arises. Grivot is one of few domaines where their Ech is easily a match for their Clos de Vougeot in terms of size, weight and power and overall this is potentially terrific.
VM 93 (10/2023): The 2013 Echézeaux Grand Cru was picked around 3 October. It has an intense redcurrant, raspberry and marmalade-tinged bouquet. There's fine focus, and graphite touches come through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly rugged tannins, fine acidity and dark red fruit laced with black olive and sea salt. It has a muscular finish with just a slight but welcome bitterness. This Grivot is a little too assertive, yet I cannot help falling for its charms. Very fine. Neal Martin. |

BH 92 (1/2009): (50% of the vines in this .35 ha parcel were planted in 1980 and 1988, with the remainder planted in the '50s; the vines are planted in both terres rouges and terres blanches but there is a slight majority in the latter.) Here the nose actually quite resembles that of the Fuees though the fruit spectrum is slightly more deeply pitched and runs slightly more toward the bluer end with just the barest trace of herbal while sliding gracefully into powerful and impressively broad-scaled flavors that are rich, full, sweet and textured, underpinned by ample minerality on the focused, detailed and solidly long finish. Mugnier agreed with me that this vineyard appears to be hitting its stride as of late and while not quite as good as he would like to see, certainly better than it was only a few years ago. Drink 2016+.
WA 93-94 (12/2009): Chateau de Chambolle's 2006 Bonnes Mares – which I was unable to re-taste after bottling – smells strikingly of boysenberry and blueberry, accompanied by bittersweet, high-toned herbal concentrates, black tea, crushed stone, and peat. In the mouth this is velvety yet displays invigoration of tart fruit skin, cardamom, white pepper, and mineral impingement, as well as uncanny lift, and its pure blue fruits are transparent to myriad finishing nuances. This shares with the corresponding 2005 its density, dark mystery, and stony mineral depth, but practically crackles with static electric energy and boasts mysteriously levitational length. I see no reason to defer the pleasure of its company, but at the same time this impeccably balanced and refined version of its cru should be worth following for at least 12-15 years.
VM 93 (3/2009): (from a blend of 60% white and 40% red soil, says Mugnier) Bright, medium red. Perfumed nose of blueberry, mocha and crushed stone. Plush on entry, then wonderfully fresh in the middle and less plump than the Fuees, with terrific stony verve and mineral intensity to the crushed black fruit flavors. Very broad on the back end. This will rely more on its serious tannins than on its acids for longevity-and it will require at least 10 to 12 years of cellaring. |

JM 96 (5/2024): The domaine is blessed with a heritage of ancient vines, in part because Lalou Bize-Leroy never grubs up and replants All the wines are aged in François Frères barrels which have been air dried for three years. They are neither fined nor filtered – “sediment is the jewel in the bottle”. Not the densest but a fine even gentle red across the glass. Some smoky notes from the stems. Then a super svelte glowing mouthful of alpine and gariguette strawberries, and fresh white pepper, light acidity but adequate, just a few tannins, impeccable length. The smokiness and peppery aspect did not diminish with time. Drink from 2022-2037.
BH 96 (6/2009): A deep, brooding and almost taciturn nose of ripe black berry fruit, intense violet notes and spice hints and warm earth gives way to sweet, rich and exceptionally fresh big-bodied flavors that are textured and completely saturate the palate with buckets of dry extract while at the same time buffering the ripe but very firm tannins, all wrapped in a stunningly long finish that has some of the best overall complexity of the entire range. This too will need ample patience but should more than reward the wait. A knock-out. Drink 2022+.
WA 94 (6/2010): Its forward, succulent sweetness of red raspberry and purple plum fruit accompanied by blond tobacco and smoked meat set Leroy’s 2007 Richebourg apart from its Romanee-St.-Vivant sibling, whose utterly contrasting personality may convey more alluring mystery and complexity, but cannot compete with the sheer sappy concentration and particular energy and exuberance on display. There is a meaty savor, smoky tang, and brightness of berry fruit that truly stains the palate. I expect this is another Leroy wine that will defy its vintage by retaining stamina for two or more decades, and in the process will almost certainly reveal further facets. |

BH 91-94 (1/2016): This is markedly more floral on the equally cool and airy red and dark currant scents that are also laced with discreet spice and earth nuances. There is excellent intensity and power to the broad-shouldered flavors that deliver even more minerality on the impressively complex and persistent finish that is a bit less youthfully austere than it typically is. Patience will be required. (Drink starting 2029).
VM 91-93 (1/2016): Bright red with ruby tones. Distinctly wilder on the nose than the Vigne au Saint, offering scents of cherry, raspberry and animal fur. At once juicier and deeper, displaying terrific flavor intensity and inner-mouth perfume but kept tight by sound underlying minerality. Méo finds this wine less strict than usual but it will still need at least four or five years of aging upon release. Stephen Tanzer.
WA 91-93 (12/2015): The 2014 Corton les Perrières Grand Cru has a very pure red cherry and fresh strawberry-scented bouquet with superb delineation and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, quite grippy in the mouth and with more density than the 2014 Corton la Vigne Au Saint. The fruit turns toward dark red/black at the finish that has fine salinity. It does not quite match the Corton Clos Rognet, yet it is still a grand cru in the true sense of the word. |

BH 91-93 (1/2018): A completely different aromatic profile is present here with its cool, restrained and much redder fruit that is laced with soft nuances of earth and a hint of the sauvage. The overtly muscular broad-shouldered flavors brim with both dry extract and minerality on the firm, youthfully austere and mildly rustic finish. As is virtually always the case, this is going to require at least some patience so that the mid-palate can flesh out. (Drink starting 2028).
VM 90-92 (1/2018): Deep ruby-red. Superripe, even slightly roasted aromas of black raspberry and chocolate are at the verge of extreme. Hugely sweet, creamy wine with adequate acidity but a distinctly candied fruit character for the year. Finishes very long and a bit aggressive but not quite warm, with big, chewy tannins accentuated by a stem element. A bit of a caricature but has the structure too age. Méo noted that this vineyard needs to be harvested late, but admitted that he may have waited too long in 2016. (His fruit from Corton La Vigne au Saint, situated on the Pernand-Vergelesses side of the hill of Corton, was wiped out by frost in 2016.) VM 93-95 (1/2024): The 2022 Echézeaux Les Loächausses Grand Cru is the maiden release from a 0.38-hectare strip that hitherto was part of the cuvée produced by Gros Frère & Soeur and is matured in 100% new oak. [Readers should note that Paul Gros, son of Anne, is farming the same lieu-dit to be released under his own name.] It has a tightly wound nose at first. Then it opens with ebullient red berry fruit, Japanese yuzu, a smear of Seville orange marmalade, and sous-bois aromas. The palate is smooth and harmonious, quite plush in style - lots of rondeur here. It’s quite toasty toward the finish due to the oak, but it feels long and sumptuous. BH 92-94 (1/2024): A touch of wood toast sets off the pretty and very fresh red and dark currant and poached plum aromas that display top notes of Asian-style tea and lovely spice nuances. The cool and restrained middleweight flavors exude a distinct minerality on the linear, youthfully austere and sneaky long finish where the wood reappears. This is a bit oaky today but it appears to have the necessary density to integrate it in time. (Drink starting 2034) |

VM 94-96 (1/2024): The 2022 Richebourg Grand Cru is another new cuvée added to the Domaine's portfolio due to the end of Colette Gros's lease agreement. This parcel is located in the lieu-dit of Les Vérroilles, where there was originally a wall, parts of which remain. This 0.41-hectares is sandwiched between rows owned by A.F. Gros and Gros Frère & Soeur. Aged entirely in new oak, the refined bouquet gradually builds in the glass: mainly dark berry fruit, forest floor, hints of morels and light graphite aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins. This is a more elegant take on Richebourg. It is harmonious with a satin texture, a peacock's tail towards the finish, and a dash of white pepper on the aftertaste. This marks a very impressive debut. (Drink between 2030-2060). Neal Martin.
BH 92-95 (1/2024): Here too there is a touch of wood toast lurking in the background of the wonderfully spicy, airy and cool array of mostly dark berry fruit and floral aromas. The tautly muscular and intensely mineral-driven bigger-bodied flavors possess innate power that carries over to the driving and exceptionally firm finale that is compact, serious and very much built-to-age. VM 93+ (6/2018): The 1996 Ruchottes-Chambertin was cropped at just 27hl/ha. Now with 21 years on the clock, atypical for this vintage, it has a sensual bouquet with scents of red fruit, cassis, quince and violet, though with continued aeration it develops a subtle earthiness. The palate is marked by very fine tannin, well judged acidity and quite a structured second half. This is still quite backward, but there is something very stylish here and for those with extraordinary patience it may well blossom...eventually! Tasted at the Ruchottes-Chambertin vertical in London. (Drink between 2018-2032). Neal Martin.
BH 92 (4/2016): At 20 years of age this is finally just now coming into its own as the truffle-inflected nose remains fresh yet there is good secondary development in evidence on the mostly red berry fruit and earthy aromas. There is excellent detail to the mineral-driven flavors that, like many '96s, are not particularly dense but on the plus side they are refined and this sense of elegance continues onto the balanced, lingering and delicious finale. To my taste this has arrived at its peak though it should easily hold here for years to come. By the way, there is a trace of the '96 style acidity present but it is not so prominent to detract from the overall sense of balance provided that there is an appropriate food pairing. Tasted twice in the past year with consistent results. |

The 2010 is all about finesse and elegance. Slight elements of fragility come through on the finish, but the vulnerable side of the wine is equally compelling. I look forward to tasting this once it is in bottle. There is an element of mystery and intrigue in the glass that in many ways sums up so much of what Burgundy is all about. WA 93 (6/1997): I often prefer Engel's Grands-Echezeaux over his Clos Vougeot, but in 1995 found them to be equally spectacular. Dark-colored and with a brooding, tight, muted nose, the massively endowed Grands-Echezeaux explodes on the palate with powerful, huge, black, roasted fruits. Rugged and dark, this full-bodied, muscular, rich, and spicy behemoth demands to be held for 8 or more years before being drunk over the following decade. It is unfiltered and unfined. This note is the result of tastings I did in Burgundy between January 7 and January 29.
BH 88 (3/2006): I quite liked the expressive, spicy and nicely complex nose but the intense and still very firmly structured flavors are on the angular side and it's not clear that there is sufficient mid-palate depth to ever completely buffer the tannic backbone. As such, this finishes with moderate astringency yet the complexity is such that there is more than medium interest here. I would continue to cellar this to allow the tannins to mellow somewhat and then serve it with appropriate food and it should offer moderate enjoyment. Try from 2009+. |

WA 95 (6/2004): Lachaux’s 2002 Clos de Vougeot, from a large well-placed parcel, is an exceptional example of this grand cru’s rarely seen potential. Its deep, intense aromas display licorice-infused blackberries and spices. On the palate, this wine’s power, depth, and concentration are matched by its purity and detail. This huge, medium to full-bodied effort coats the mouth with tar, black cherries, blackberries, licorice, and cassis. Its prolonged, harmonious finish reveals copious quantities of prodigiously ripe tannin. Drink this beauty between 2008 and 2018.
BH 92 (1/2005): Very ripe and earthy black fruit aromas followed by dense, dusty, backward flavors and a structured, long, intense, slightly austere finish. This is a robust and masculine wine that has so much mid-palate density that it should be able to absorb its oak without difficulty. Drink: 2012+
VM 90-93 (4/2004): Bright ruby-red. Perfumed, bright aromas of black cherry, violet and bitter chocolate. Big, chewy, sweet and rich, with nicely delineated dark fruit, mineral and smoke flavors. Finishes firmly tannic and long. The crop level here was just 32 hectoliters per hectare, according to Lachaux, who told me his parcel is adjacent to the Grands-Echezeaux of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti. |

While this can be enjoyed now, it will be better in 5 years and should drink beautifully for another 10 after that. A very classy wine. |

The bouquet is surfeit with red berry fruit, briary and crushed stone aromas, all well defined and beautifully assimilated with the new oak. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black and red fruit, well judged acidity, clean and crisp with gentle grip on the finish. BH 93 (1/2019): An equally deft application of wood is present on the reticent aromas of plum, black cherry, earth and a whiff of the sauvage that with aggressive swirling have no trouble being appreciated. I very much like the sleek, even polished mouthfeel of the bigger, richer and more powerful broad-shouldered flavors that display excellent persistence on the palate coating, dusty and beautifully long finale where hints of bitter cherry pit and oak can be found. This is very firmly structured and will need at least a few years of bottle age first but in time it should be excellent. (Drink starting 2031). |

This is unusually refined for Echezeaux yet it will be capable of at least two decades of age. Drink 2014+.
VM 88 (4/2007): Full, bright red. Redcurrant, raspberry, dried flowers, mocha and nutty oak on the nose. Juicy, firm and penetrating, with mint and menthol nuances to the clean, tangy berry and oak flavors. Falls down a bit on the finish, which shows a dry, peppery edge. |

BH 93 (5/2007): A marvelously complex nose that is just beginning to display the first hints of secondary aromas (though no sous bois) leads to concentrated black cherry flavors with firm but harmonious tannins underpinned by firm acidity and excellent length where the structure comes across as a dusty element. This is a big wine by the standards of the domaine and is very classy juice that continues to positively evolve and as such, I have extended my suggested drinking window. Drink: 2012+.
WA 90-92 (6/1997): The day I tasted the dark-colored Musigny, it was extremely muted aromatically. On the palate it revealed tightly wound (almost nervous), super-delineated and polished fresh cherries, cassis and violets. Medium-to-full bodied, supple and very long, it is obviously an Outstanding wine but it is closed. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2010. |

Impeccably balanced grand cru, with powerful extract, powerful structure and terrific grip.
BH 89 (2/2001): Beautifully complex, spicy black fruit aromas introduce remarkably supple, medium weight flavors that display plenty of pinot sap and a wonderfully broad range of flavors. This is very intense and quite long with a clear sense of breed to it. This is very young with excellent potential and while this will probably never be a truly great Jadot Bèze, it should be a lovely wine in 10 years or so. Try from 2008+. |

VM 96 (4/2009): Bright, full red. Vibrant but brooding nose shows a medicinal austerity to the pungent aromas of raspberry, flowers and botanical herbs. Penetrating, high-pitched and brilliantly delineated, with uncanny energy and lift to the red berry, floral and mineral flavors. This saturates every square millimeter of the palate, then explodes with perfume on the expanding aftertaste. The overall impression is of pure soil-driven energy in a rather uncompromising style, but when I drank the second half of my bottle two days later with food, it showed a deep cherry flavor and compelling sweetness. Splendid Clos de Beze.
WA 95 (12/2009): The 2006 Chambertin Clos de Beze is in another league from Jadot's other 2006 vintage Chambertin grand crus, or for that matter any wines that went before it in that collection. A complex and classic Clos de Beze nose of rose petal, black raspberry, peat, licorice, dark chocolate, and smoked meats leads to a correspondingly multi-faceted palate of silken textural refinement, underlain by savory, saline minerality. In the best manner of the vintage, this marries soothing and invigoration, concentration and elegance, finishing with lift and refinement as well as riveting, vibratory interplay and extraordinary reach. It should be exciting to plug into a bottle of it anytime over the next 15 years, if not longer.
BH 94 (4/2009): Here the nose is as reserved as the Latricières and only grudgingly gives up glimpses of the spicy and earthy red pinot fruit nose that is quite cool with obvious minerality, which continues onto the textured, intense and nervy big-bodied flavors that are textured and classy with highly sophisticated tannins on the long finish. Despite the reserved character of the nose, I was very pleasantly surprised at the relative accessibility this already displays due to the ample buffering sap yet make no mistake, the '06 Bèze will successfully age for years. A knockout that is noticeably better in-bottle than it originally showed from cask. Drink 2018+. |

BH 92-94 (4/2018): A broad-ranging nose is comprised by notes of earth, spice, plum, dark cherry, violet and more moderate though hardly subtle wood. The rich, round and impressively-scaled flavors possess fine density and evident power that carries over to the sappy and palate coating finish that is admirably persistent. This isn't quite as complex as the Bèze but there is excellent underlying material such that this should ultimately transform into an excellent CdlR. (Drink starting 2034).
WA 93-95 (12/2017): The 2016 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru was showing a little more reduction on the nose compared to the Clos Saint-Denis, although I felt that there is more detail and complexity in situ. The palate is very refined with filigree tannin, great tension and focus, a gentle grip in the mouth with an almost tart, tensile finish that lingers in the mouth. I also appreciate the spiciness on the aftertaste. Superb. |

WA 93-95 (8/1998): This saturated and dark colored wine, with its extraordinarily spicy nose of sweet red and black fruits, sent me soaring. This massive, intense, broad-shouldered, masculine, structured, and chewy wine is crammed with super-ripe, rich, and layered blackberries, cassis, licorice, earth, and Asian spices. As if that were not enough, its dense fruit comes roaring back after expectoration, lingering on the palate for nearly a minute. This is an extraordinary Clos Vougeot! Projected maturity: 2006-2014. Bravo! to Jacques Lardiere and Pierre-Henri Gagey.

Wonderfully pure, inviting nose combines strawberry, raspberry, rose petal, spices, white pepper and blood orange: I might have picked this essence of Burgundy as a Chambolle-Musigny! Plush, silky and fine-grained but tactile and substantial as well, boasting terrific energy for its vintage. (The vines benefited from the cooler temperatures and well-timed rainfall in August, which enable the wine to retain freshness, noted Frederic Barnier.) The wine's very primary red berry, spice and floral flavors display seductive sweetness but a strong element of saline minerality accentuates the overall dry impression. A great wine in the making, showing an almost peppery vibrancy today; I would not be surprised if this shut down in the bottle in the near future. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 94 (2/2019): Palish medium red with little or no amber at the rim. Wilder on the nose than the 2002, with aromas of raspberry, cedar and fresh blood complicated by leather and game nuances. Offers a superb combination of intensity and weight, with its fruit and saline mineral flavors energized by surprisingly fresh acidity and firming minerality. This densely packed midweight is still a bit youthfully imploded, finishing with a tannic firmness. Perhaps most impressive today for its slow-building, rising length, this soil-inflected wine does not narrow on the back half. (Drink between 2020-2039). Stephen Tanzer.
BH 90 (3/2006): Beautifully detailed fruit that is quite feminine in character and remains very fresh and elegant while introducing rich, sappy and intense flavors displaying grand cru intensity, length and structure as well as a really lovely finishing minerality. There is solid if not terrific density here to go with a sweetness that comes from the thick pinot extract. I quite like this and while it presently lacks that "wow" factor, the balance is impeccable and it should gracefully age for a number of years to come; note that I have extended slightly my initial suggested drinking window. | VM 92-95 (1/2018): (there was a lot of frost here, but the Boillots' two parcels of very old vines in Grand Maupertui suffered less than vines at the bottom of the clos; 25 hectoliters per hectare produced; 75% new oak): Good dark red; more deeply colored than Boillot's estate wines from the Côte de Beaune. Lovely perfumed lift to the aromas of red cherry, licorice, spices and flowers. Then fat and thick in the mouth, with dark berry and black cherry flavors energized by salty minerality. Lovely inner-palate tension and flavor complexity here. The tannins are firm but not dusty or dry on the long, rising finish. Boillot does a fermentation integrale for most of his Côte de Nuits wines, vinifying them in barrels, then pressing them and returning them to barrel. This technique makes for gentler extraction and results in an earlier integration of fruit and oak elements, typically yielding rounder, more voluminous wines with silkier tannins but also more structure without dryness. BH 96 (11/2023): Still good color with only minor bricking. An exuberantly spicy and floral suffused nose displays ample amounts of sous-bois, earth, underbrush and a whiff of sauvage character. There is first-rate density and power to the succulent, vibrant and seductive mineral-driven large-bodied flavors that deliver outstanding depth and persistence on the slightly grippy finish. Notwithstanding how well the bottle in this tasting showed, I would add that I have had noticeable bottle variation as some examples seem incredibly burly and tannic. As such, my scores that have merited scores ranging from 93 to 96. As an aside, I have at times wondered if there were multiple sources for the '85 Chambertin as this would potentially account for the bottle variation. (Drink starting 2023).
WA 96 (10/1992): This should prove to be one of the great successes of the vintage. The dark ruby/purple color is followed by an unevolved nose that smells like a barrel sample given its big, grapy, jammy black fruit character intertwined with aromas of prunes, damp earth, spices, and meat. In the mouth, there is superb concentration, medium body, integrated soft tannins, and a whoppingly long finish. I would opt for drinking this wine in about 3-4 years. It will keep for 20 or more. |

WA 92 (8/1998): Displaying a medium-to-dark ruby color and a lovely nose of spicy red berries, cracked black pepper, Asian spices, and distinctive notes of cedar, this is a medium-to-full-bodied, velvety-textured, and complex wine. Its enthralling flavor profile offers layers of rich black pepper-laced blueberries and blackberries that are intensely spiced with cinnamon, juniper berries, and hints of eucalyptus. Drink it between 2001 and 2008.
BH 87 (11/2009): Some lightening of the robe though the center remains intensely ruby. An earthy and distinctly floral of black fruit, in particular cassis, complements the very rich and full-bodied flavors that display excellent volume and power before driving toward a chewy, firm and mouth coating finish that while solidly persistent, is a bit tough and dry. While the tannins will of course continue to evolve, it's hard to see this coming together. In sum, a delicious and complex effort that definitely needs food to buffer the evident structure. | BH 89 (3/2013): I have had two distinctly different experiences with this wine. The most recent example was notably better than the first as it displayed none of the acidic dryness of the first and while, like most '96s, the flavors are not especially dense, there was excellent depth, length and overall balance. Moreover there was a really lovely perfumed and highly complex character to the nose. An excellent Clos de Tart and one that has basically arrived at its peak. | VM 93+ (2/2018): Dark red color; looks like a young wine. Expressive if slightly medicinal aromas of dark berries, purple flowers, spices and crushed-stone minerality. Dense and rather powerful if a bit unrefined, with very rich flavors of redcurrant, tobacco, spices and wild herbs conveying a strong impression of extract (perhaps a bit too much saignee here?). A bit less brisk in the mouth than it is on the nose, but with no shortage of acidity. Finishes with a serious dusting of tannins and strong saline persistence. (The tannins in today's Clos de Tart are finer.) This wine may be passing through an awkward stage of its evolution in bottle. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 92-94 (1/2017): A pungent nose consists of wood and reduction today. Otherwise there is excellent volume and an overt muscularity to the powerful, rich and imposing flavors that brim with minerality and dry extract, all wrapped in a textured and velvety finish that is notably firm but not hard and I very much like the overall depth on the balanced and beautifully persistent finish. This will require at least some patience yet should drink well after only 6 to 8 years. (Drink starting 2027).
VM 92-94 (1/2017): Healthy medium red. Initially deeply pitched, earth-bound aromas of very ripe strawberry and raspberry showed pungent stony minerality with aeration. Fatter, fleshier and sweeter than the young Clos Saint-Denis, offering more volume but less detail to its red fruit flavors in the early going. Finishes very long, with fine-grained tannins and a surprisingly juicy quality. The Clos Saint-Denis is finer while this wine is more muscular. Stephen Tanzer. |

| JM 96-98 (11/2018): Powerful weighty colour. The nose is not there at first, just a sense of weight and wood. Then some delicate dark raspberry notes start to emerge. A little sterner than the lacy grace of Clos de Bèze. Magical and detailed little dark fruits, bilberries, a feeling of very small berries. This wins in the middle of the palate whereas the Clos de Bèze showed better out of the blocks. Dense, darker slightly more concentrated fruit at the back, a little closer to black, then the stems provide refreshment for the finale. Tasted: November 2018. |

BH 91-93 (1/2014): Here the wood is more discreet if not invisible as it sets off the earthy and quite somber mix of red and dark currant, spice and distinctly sauvage nuances. There is good energy and precision to the focused, intense and overtly mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors that culminate in a saline, moderately austere and impressively persistent finish. (Drink starting 2024).
VM 91-93 (1/2014): Medium red. Sexy, soil-driven aromas of red berries, flowers, earth and mint. Sweet, fine-grained and delicate, with a touch of herbs to the raspberry flavor. Not at all a fleshy style but prettier than usual for this wine, which tends to be severe in the early going. Finishes with very good length and cut. Stepehn Tanzer. |
