| BH 93 (4/2015): (from a 1.07 ha parcel of 35+ year old vines; note that .4 ha was just grubbed up for replanting.) A touch of reduction is just enough to shave the top notes off the otherwise pure and elegant nose so I would suggest decanting this if you're tempted to try a bottle young. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension and excellent delineation to the mineral-driven and overtly saline flavors that display fine depth on the impressively persistent and well-balanced finish that exhibits plenty of the classic austerity of a young Taillepieds. In the category of a very minor nit there is a hint of warmth but I quite liked this anyway. drink 2024+. Outstanding! |

VM 94-96 (1/2014): In most vintages, there are three distinct cuvees that make up the final blend for the flagship Pommard Clos des Epeneaux, but in 2012 there are just two. The first cuvee, from the top of the vineyard, is intensely tannic and structured. Floral notes lead to dark red cherries and crushed rocks in a wine that is all about crystalline purity and delineation. The second cuvee, from the bottom of the hill, presents more depth and volume. A representation of the final blend is striking. Sadly, the entire production will be bottled only in magnums, of which there will be just 4,000 to go around, versus the normal production of about 22,000 bottles. Readers who can find the 2012 should not hesitate, as it is shaping up to be one of the wines of the vintage. Antonio Galloni. BH 91-94 (4/2014): ( the 5+ ha Clos is composed of approximately 80% Petits Epenots and 20% Grands Epenots; the vine ages run from 18 to 75+ years of age; this will be bottled only in magnum.) An exceptionally fresh and relatively elegant nose features notes of various red berries, earth and a discreet spiciness. There is a beguiling mouth feel to the medium-bodied, concentrated and powerful flavors that are shaped by very firm yet ripe tannins on the palate coating finish that is sneaky long. Note that the suggested initial drinking window is based on magnum format. WA 91+ (10/2015): Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux from Domaine Comte Armand has more red rather than black fruit on the nose with plenty of wild blackberry and raspberry aromas coming through, though there is some new oak still to be resolved. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannin, good acidity but again, the oak still conspicuous and more expressive than the terroir at the moment. Then again, with knowledge of the producer, I know how this wine sheds its tannins and benefits from several years in bottle. This is one of those Burgundy wines that could go either way, but given the grower, will give it the benefit of the doubt because of those aromatics. Drink 2030+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

WA 88-90 (6/2015): The 2012 Bourgogne comes from two parcels in “Les Pressonnier” and “Les Grand Champs” and sees no new oak. It has a captivating bouquet of brambly black fruit that is very well defined. The palate is well balanced with sappy black fruit on the entry, nicely judged acidity and a natural, pastille-like finish. This is uncomplicated but astutely crafted, downright delicious Burgundy. VM 88-90 (1/2014): A great introduction to the vintage here, Bachelet's 2012 Bourgogne is endowed with superb depth and purity in its class. Red stone fruits, plums, spices, menthol and licorice inform this striking, expressive beauty. There is a surprising amount of structure for a Bourgogne. (Drink between 2014-2020). Antonio Galloni. BH 87-89 (1/2014): There is a gentle touch of wood to the spicy red and dark berry fruit aromas that convey a real sense of earth that carries over to the impressively rich and utterly delicious flavors that despite the obvious ripeness retain a fine sense of energy and freshness on the lingering finish. This is a really good Bourgogne and absolutely worth a look. (Drink starting 2016). |

| BH 89-91 (1/2014): (from vines averaging between 60 and 70 years of age.) There is enough wood to be easily perceptible though not so much as to impede an appreciation of the spicy dark berry fruit, earth and underbrush suffused nose. The seductively textured medium-bodied flavors possess a velvety mouth feel thanks to the abundance of palate coating dry extract that also does a fine job of buffering the moderately firm tannic spine on the ever-so-slightly rustic finish. A fine Gevrey villages. Drink 2018+. Outstanding Top Value! |

VM 95+ (3/2015): Full medium red. Cool, aristocratic aromas of cherry, pepper, espresso and medicinal herbs complicated by notes of game, smoky minerals and crushed stone. Utterly seamless on the palate, showing an exotic fruit quality to the perfumed flavors of red berries and flowers. Boasts wonderful energy for 2012: this really glistens on the palate and on the rising back end. A wine of great definition and grip, finishing with noble, smooth tannins and superb sappy length. VM 94-96 (1/2014): A wine of endless layers of flavor, the 2012 Chambertin Clos de Bèze, wraps around the palate with gorgeous depth and pure texture. Sweet tobacco, wild flowers, new leather and succulent red cherries all blossom on the close. The inclusion of 50% whole clusters gives the Bèze gorgeous aromatic lift that works as a counterpoint to some of the richer flavors. An exotic melange of blue and black-toned fruit, violets, spices and menthol all blossom on the finish. I very much like the intensity here. BH 91-94 (4/2014): There is plenty of floral character to the markedly spicy mix of very fresh red berry fruit liqueur aromas that are trimmed in a background application of oak. The cool, pure and restrained middle weight flavors exude a fine minerality that adds lift to the delicious, round and impressively long finish. I like the underlying material and while this is a good deal less complex than several wines in the range, my score offers the benefit of the doubt. Drink 2024+. WA 91-93 (12/2013): The 2012 Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru has a perfumed, floral bouquet with scents of black cherries, creme de cassis and minerals that is very attractive, even at this primal stage. The palate is medium-bodied with a firm, introspective opening and henceforth it never really goes out to entertain: broody and saturnine, piqued that it is being viewed so prematurely. Like the Mazis-Chambertin, it needs just a little more warmth of personality to filter through and indeed, returning to my sample after just three of four minutes aeration, there are some interesting spicy notes surfacing towards the finish. Give this grand cru five or six years in bottle. |

VM 93+ (3/2015): Bright medium red. Fresher and less roasted than the Chevrets, showing lovely mineral lift to the complex aromas of red cherry, iron, underbrush and spices; the Boillots benefited from the energy provided by the portion of their vines that are located in Rugiens du Haut. A sappy expression of soil on the palate, with red fruit, wild herb and white pepper flavors lifted and carried by a menthol quality. Finishes sappy and fresh, with firm tannins and strong soil character. A terrific showing, but built to age. BH 92 (4/2014): (From equally sized parcels in both Rugiens Hauts and Bas that measure <1 ha). This is a notable step up in both aromatic elegance and complexity with its layered nose of plum, anise, violet and spice nuances. There is a wonderfully intense and refined mouth feel to the broad-shouldered and punchy medium weight flavors that are built on a base of firm minerality. I very much like the depth and length here and while there is still enough unabsorbed wood to notice on the beautifully persistent finish it should be completely integrated with a few years of bottle age. Good stuff. Drink 2022+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

VM 90 (3/2015): Bright, dark red. Sweet red berries, nutty oak and subtle soil tones on the nose. Fat, sweet and spicy, showing good fullness for village wine. Savory, serious Volnay with good vinosity and density and a saline complexity. Finishes with broad, building, ripe tannins and good savory persistence. Antonio Galloni. BH 88 (4/2014): (Entirely from 5 different 1ers). An earthy and distinctly ripe nose of cassis, plum and soft floral aromas gives way to equally earthy middle weight flavors where once again the supporting tannins are relatively fine-grained. The finale is firm without being rustic though there is enough youthful austerity to notice. This should reward mid-term cellaring. Drink 2018+. |

| VM 93-95 (1/2014): Violets, licorice, blueberries and graphite are some of the many notes that take shape in the 2012 Volnay Les Santenots. There is more than enough structure to support the fruit in a dramatic, large-scaled Burgundy that captures the essence of the year in its explosive personality. This intense, powerful Volnay need serious time in the cellar. A generous, beautifully resonant finish rounds things off. Antonio Galloni. |

| VM 92 (2/2019): Medium yellow. Very sexy scents of ripe stone fruits, minerals, clove and menthol, plus a suggestion of redcurrant and a Batard-like toasty nuance. Large-scaled, plush and powerful but also quite fine-grained, with salty minerality and a repeating menthol element carrying through to a palate-staining finish. There's lovely supporting acidity here for such a rich, ripe wine. A touch of sweetness gives this complex, chewy premier cru some early appeal but there's much more to come here. (I should note that my first bottle showed a deeper yellow color. It was sweet and silky but displayed more evolved notes of ripe apricot, marzipan and white chocolate, as well as a balsamic element, almost certainly due to a bad cork or cork seal. Veronique Drouhin admitted that her family had some cork problems in 2012.) Stephen Tanzer. |

| BH 90 (1/2015): The reduction this displayed last year from barrel is still present even if there is less of it. There is good freshness and energy to the supple and well-concentrated medium-bodied flavors that are shaped by relatively fine-grained tannins on the balanced finish where a trace of austerity is present. This possesses outstanding depth and length for its level and while the reduction is a concern my score assumes that it will ultimately dissipate with a few years of bottle age. Drink 2020+. BH 92-95 (1/2014): (from .89 ha parcel planted in 1910). This is more elegant still with an exuberantly spicy, airy and cool mix of raspberry, cherry, red currant and plenty of wet stone character. There is superb intensity to the mineral-driven, pure and ultra-refined middle weight flavors that are shaped by very fine-grained tannins on the moderately austere, balanced and wonderfully persistent finish. A classic Clos St. Jacques. Drink 2024+. Don't miss! Outstanding! WA 94-96 (12/2013): The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint Jacques has a very precise bouquet with raspberry pastille, wild strawberry and a distant marine influence that is very pure. The palate is medium-bodied with a clean and pure opening, the mineralite only surfacing midway and then flourishing towards the complex, quite compelling finish. This is a very nuanced Clos Saint Jacques with a long spice tinged tail on the aftertaste. VM 94-97 (2/2014): Bright dark, fresh red. Pungent, high-pitched aromas of raspberry, minerals, rose petal and blood orange. Incredibly sappy, vibrant and imploded, showing Outstanding lift and cut to its red berry and floral flavors. Not quite opulent but utterly seamless wine, finishing with explosive length and fine-grained tannins. This wonderfully juicy Clos Saint-Jacques is hiding its underlying density today. This is now 12.8% alcohol, without chaptalization. |

WA 93-95 (12/2013): The 2012 Richebourg Grand Cru comes from the family’s 0.60-hectare parcel whose oldest vines are approaching retirement. It has a very refined, elegant bouquet that is actually more like a Romanee-Saint-Vivant at the moment. There are lovely scents of orange-blossom and quince emerging with time. The palate is well-balanced with a rounded, harmonious entry. It is silky smooth at the moment with a fine thread of acidity. It remains sedate, distant even but very sophisticated and the oak is very well assimilated towards the finish. Excellent. BH 91-94 (4/2014): (The Richebourg parcel now totals .6 ha after it was combined with the vines that formerly belonged to Michel Gros, which he agreed to exchange so that he could keep the Vosne 1er Clos de Reas as a monopole of Domaine Michel Gros. The Richebourg vines have been replanted 3 times and they are now 15+, 25+ and 70+ years of age.) In much the same fashion as the Pezerolles this is presently very toasty and it's enough where the wood pushes the spicy black pinot fruit to the background if not completely hides it. The supple and very round large-scaled flavors possess excellent concentration and an intense minerality on the powerful and moderately austere finish. My predicted range offers the benefit of the doubt in this case because the wood does not alter the texture or sweeten the finish and thus there is a good chance that this will ultimately harmonize. Drink 2024+. |

VM 91-94 (1/2014): Saturated deep red. Superripe yet sappy aromas of black and red fruits, crushed stone and smoky minerality. Then extremely suave and refined on the palate, and distinctly red in character, with dense strawberry, raspberry and crushed stone flavors nicely framed by harmonious acidity. Ripe but classically dry wine, finishing with lovely tangy floral lift, fine-grained tannins and terrific cut. This is Jadot's vinification, and it shows! Stephen Tanzer. BH 90-92 (4/2014): A cool and pure black cherry suffused nose displays background hints of menthol and spice. There is an unusually lush, even opulent palate feel to the attractively mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors that are supported by fine-grained tannins that are quite dense so this will definitely require extended cellaring. This is less austere than it usually is and should be approachable if desired after only 5 to 7 years. Drink 2024+. WA 90-92 (12/2013): The 2012 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuees has a slight reduction on the nose, but with aeration it opens up and offers tertiary, briary aromas; then later broody black fruit and wild hedgerow. The palate is medium-bodied with a juicy, succulent opening: plenty of redcurrant and tart red cherry fruit. It demonstrates admirable tension and length on the finish to crown this fine Les Fuees that should age with style. |

WA 92-94 (12/2013): The 2012 Echezeaux Grand Cru has a sensual, expressive, kaleidoscopic bouquet with wonderful vibrant blackberry, cassis and blueberry scents infused with minerals. The palate is beautifully balanced with fine, sappy red berry fruit, a citric thread of racy acidity that neatly offsets the extravagant finish. There is plenty to savour on the vibrant, vivacious Echezeaux. VM 92-94 (2/2014): (from Les Rouges; like the Grands-Echezeaux, this is aging in 30% new oak): Bright dark red. Dark raspberry, bitter chocolate, violet and pungent graphite minerality on the nose. Juicy, spicy and youthfully imploded, with powerful spine to its intense dark fruit and mineral flavors. Its sappy, building finish saturates the palate with saline minerality. Distinctly grand cru Echezeaux. BH 92-94 (4/2014): (from Les Rouges du Bas that is worked by horse because it is so steep). A spicy and well-layered nose of dark berries, cassis, earth and game nuances are all framed in just enough wood to notice. There is a beguiling velvety mouth feel to the round and supple yet remarkably well-concentrated big-bodied flavors that possess impressive intensity on the palate coating and notably firm finish where the tannins are clearly present. This is a big Ech that will need all of 15 years to arrive at its full majority. dRINK 2027+. |

| VM 92-94 (1/2014): Layers of blue/purple fruit, violets, spices, menthol and new leather blossom in the 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers. Today, the 2012 is expressive and beautiful, with exceptional balance and a total sense of class. The Cazetiers is going to be virtually impossible to resist young, but it also has more than enough depth to develop nicely in bottle for many years. Antonio Galloni. |

WA 93+ (10/2015): Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 La Grande Rue Grand Cru from Lamarche has a fabulous bouquet that gently unfurls in the glass: fine mineralite and tension, wonderful precision here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tensile tannin, crisp and poised, tightly wound and certainly needing several years to really show its mettle, but a great wine that is both understated yet intense. I'll be cautious now, but I would not be surprised to see this gain more favourable reviews in the future. BH 93 (1/2015): There is just enough wood to notice framing the red currant, black cherry and plum aromas that also display pretty floral and spice notes. There is fine concentration, power and punch to the refined and classy middle weight flavors that possess excellent intensity on the balanced, mouth coating, velvety and beautifully persistent finish. This too will need at least a decade plus of bottle age. Drink 2027+. |

BH 94 (1/2015): (produced from two large parcels of differing vine age - one that is approximately two-thirds of the blend and is now 50+ years of age and a second, smaller group of vines that is approximately 25+ years of age.) A markedly floral nose exhibits a broad array of spice and red and dark berry fruit aromas that include plum, cassis and earth. There is excellent detail and plenty of punch to the mineral-inflected flavors that are shaped by ultra-refined tannins on the balanced and gorgeously persistent finish that is firm and serious but not really especially austere. This is seriously good with a lovely sense of harmony plus the perfect balance suggests that this will mature over a very long time. Drink 2027+. VM 93 (3/2015): (100% vendange entier; the village fruit was destemmed in 2012): Superripe aromas of red fruits, peony, mocha and balsamic spices. Plush, full and seamless, offering a pliant texture and terrific depth to the flavors of red fruits, dried spices, coffee and flowers. A tad warm on the back end but the dusty tannins melt into the wine's fruit. Less minerally than usual for this grand cru but there's no denying its richness and depth. This will need time to burn off some of its baby fat. Stephen Tanzer. WA 90 (10/2015): Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru has a classically lined, slightly herbaceous bouquet, perhaps even ferrous though well defined with dusky black fruit emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannins, open-knit, a little herbaceous again but balanced, though I would prefer more flesh to come through on the bony finish. For me, it is not in the same class as Clos de Tart, but it is always intriguing to see how this wine develops and surprises in bottle. |

| VM 97 (4/2015): The 2012 Vosne-Romanee Les Beaux Monts is simply magnificent. It's impossible not to stop for a moment to consider that this tasting is only at about the halfway point, and the wines are now into the stratosphere. Smoke, lavender, blood orange and plums saturate the palate in a rich, enveloping Burgundy that simply towers. Sensuality and power collide as the Beaux Monts shows off its pure pedigree. There is excellent volume and mid-palate concentration to the fleshy and generous medium-bodied flavors that possess controlled power on the beautifully complex, balanced and long finish that is a bit less austere than that of the Reignots. There is a hint of tea-like nuances to the floral, spice, earth and sauvage notes on the broad-ranging dark berry fruit scents. The punchy and intense big-bodied flavors possess a subtle touch of minerality as well as fine concentration, all wrapped in a linear and wonderfully long finish. Here the nose isn't quite as spicy as that of the Chezeaux though it's otherwise similar with terrific depth that continues onto the lacy yet punchy middle weight plus flavors that possess fine size, weight and power. This is a classic example of a wine that displays power without weight because it's really quite refined plus the length is remarkable. One to strongly consider. Drink 2022+. Outstanding! |

| BH 94 (1/2015): (from old vines of an indeterminate age.) A markedly ripe yet fresh and cool nose offers up a beguiling array of spice, floral and stone elements that confer serious depth onto the red, blue and black pinot fruit aromas. The mouth feel of the medium-bodied flavors is also silky and mineral-driven and the palpable sense of refinement is enhanced by the super fine-grained tannins on the hugely long, firm and beautifully balanced finale. BH 97 (1/2015): A highly spiced and exceptionally fresh, ripe and airy nose mixes a wide variety of mostly red berry fruit aromas though there are background notes of plum, cassis, lavender and oak. The broad-shouldered flavors possess a seductive texture thanks to the copious amounts of dry extract that push the very firm tannic spine to the background. I very much like the concentration here as well as the vibrancy and this is very, very dry in the best sense of the term, indeed it is presently almost crisp yet the very dense supporting tannins are clearly quite ripe. This should be a fantastic Bèze in time and eventually the 2012 could rank among the great vintages for this storied wine. Drink 2032+. WA 96-98 (12/2013): The 2012 Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru is being matured entirely in new wood as usual. That comes through strongly on the nose but there is sufficient fruit to absorb that after one more winter in barrel. The palate is extremely well balanced with that hint of licorice present right from the entry. The acidity is superbly pitched and it effortlessly glides to a long, lightly spiced, candied finish that Frederic himself commented reminded him of “Zan” (a French confectionary). This is a cerebral Clos de Beze that will deserve a decade in the cellar. VM 93-95 (1/2014): Layers of blue/blackish toned fruit, cloves, smoke and licorice from the backdrop for Rousseau's 2012 Chambertin Clos de Beze. There is plenty of Beze explosiveness and structure in the glass to match the wines' brooding personality and persistence. |

WA 94-96 (12/2013): The 2012 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has an exquisite bouquet with fragrant wild strawberry, bergamot and forest floor that simmers with tension, subtle touches of cassis unfolding in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp, slightly chalky tannins, over a layer of effervescent candied fruit – mandarin and apricot enriching the finish. This is such a pretty thing, surely destined to be irresistible in its youth. VM 92-94 (1/2014): Intensity and volume are the first things that come to mind in the 2012 Charmes-Chambertin. Layers if blue/blackish fruit blossom in a wine that is beautifully textured and vibrant throughout. I very much like the intensity here. I tasted two different barrels of Charmes, both in different states of their evolution, which is why generally speaking I feel the wines aren't fully formed just yet. BH 90-93 (1/2014): (from a 1.4 ha parcel of roughly 20 year old vines that is situated one-third in Charmes proper and the remainder in Mazoyères) A beautifully elegant essence of red berry fruit nose enjoys added breadth in the form of spice, earth and gentle floral nuances. I very much like the sense of freshness and vivacity to the medium weight plus flavors that possess fine detail and a hint of minerality that continues onto the silky and saline-inflected finish. This wine has made a great deal of progress over the past 5 vintages or so and 2012 continues that trend. Drink 2022+. |

VM 88-90 (1/2014): The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin is soft, silky and delicate on the palate. Sweet red berries, mint and floral notes meld together nicely in the glass. Today the 2012 is solid, if not quite the overachiever it can be. BH 87-90 (1/2014): (from 7 different vineyards located primarily in the dejection cone east of the village.)An elegant and pure nose features aromas of various wild red berries and plenty of earth and sauvage character. A restrained and cool mouth feel characterizes the lightly mineral and saline-inflected middle weight flavors that possess both good balance and delineation on the lingering finish. This will be approachable young if desired. Drink 2019+. WA 87-89 (12/2013): The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin Village is a blend of seven parcels and from this year, two less than previous years since they have now been rented to other producers, reducing the village cru from 2.4ha to 1.8ha. It has a fresh bouquet with lifted raspberry and fresh strawberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with sweet red cherry, quite candied fruit and a long licorice-tinged finish. Fine. |

WA 95-97 (12/2013): The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint Jacques was raised in 80% new oak. It has a very fragrant bouquet with pure raspberry and wild strawberry fruit interlaced with minerals, forest floor and hints of iodine. This premier cru is imbued with a sense of completeness on the nose, as if anything more would be superfluous. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins on the entry. There is real tension here from the very start: supreme focus and a brooding sense of power towards the long, insistent finish with touches licorice on the aftertaste. VM 93-96 (1/2014): (70% new oak): Bright medium red. Red cherry, rose petal and lots of spicy oak on the scented nose. Silky, sappy and vibrant, showing an urgent, sweet crushed red fruit character complicated by flowers and spices. Displays an almost candied character but remains magically fresh, savory and light on its feet. The wonderfully horizontal, utterly suave finish leaves the mouth vibrating. Eric Rousseau told me that he and Sylvie Esmonin were the last of the five owners of Clos-Saint-Jacques to harvest in 2012. BH 92-95 (1/2014): (from a 2.2 ha parcel raised in 70% new wood) There is a deft touch of wood to the ultra-elegant essence of red pinot fruit, floral elements and wet stone scents. This is splendidly well-detailed with a terrific sense of underlying tension adding energy to the medium weight flavors that brim with a fine minerality before culminating in a balanced and stunningly long finish. This isn't necessarily more complex than either the Clos de la Roche or the Clos des Ruchottes but it is longer and the additional length gives the Clos St. Jacques a slight edge. Drink 2024+. Don't miss! Outstanding! |

WA 93-95 (12/2013): The 2012 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has a well-defined bouquet with lively red berry fruit mixed with bergamot and fresh strawberry. It does not quite have the presence of say Bernard Dugat’s example: more introverted and bashful. The palate is medium-bodied with candied red fruit on the opening, luscious red berries laced with orange zest and a hint of vanilla. The finish is nigh irresistible – full of vigor and tension with peach on the aftertaste. After a slow opening this finishes with grandeur and ambition. VM 92-94 (1/2014): Delicate and lithe on the palate, the 2012 Mazy-Chambertin is intensely perfumed and sensual. This is typical Mazy. High-toned aromatics and bright red fruits abound in a pretty, sophisticated Burgundy. Vibrant saline notes linger on the finish. BH 91-93 (1/2014): (from Mazis-Bas) There is enough reduction present to hide the underlying fruit though it does appear to be quite ripe. There is excellent punch and power to the big-bodied, intense and muscular flavors that brim with palate coating and tannin buffering dry extract on the pungently mineral-driven and beautifully long finish. This is very Mazis in character yet it's not especially rustic. Drink 2024+. |

BH 94 (1/2015): This is beautifully elegant with its airy and cool yet markedly ripe nose of lavender, black raspberry, truffle and spiced plum scents. The sleek, well-delineated, intense and mineral-driven medium weight plus flavors possess fine mid-palate concentration before terminating in an attractively vibrant, harmonious and strikingly persistent finale. Lovely stuff that should age brilliantly well. Drink 2024+. WA 94-96 (12/2013): The 2012 Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru comes from the domain’s monopole: populated by one-third vines aged around 30-years and the remainder around 65-years old (see December issue for more details.) This year it sees 20% new oak. It has wonderful delineation on the nose with heightened mineralite from the limestone soils. The palate is medium-bodied with a precise opening. There is a wave of pure, clinically defined fresh raspberry and wild strawberry notes that dovetails into quite a stern, very linear finish. This is uncompromising at the moment, an aloof yet compelling Ruchottes-Chambertin that does not quite possess the completeness of say, Mugneret-Gibourg’s, but clearly as the substance to age extremely well. VM 93 (3/2015): Bright medium red. Superripe aromas of black and purple fruits, violet and licorice, complicated by leather and game nuances. Highly concentrated, very ripe and palate-staining, with the black fruit and menthol flavors lifted by a note of violet. Finishes with a suggestion of chocolatey ripeness and Outstanding breadth. Perhaps not as classy as its 2013 sibling but surprisingly easy to taste today. |

VM 97+ (4/2013): (bottled in March of 2012; this and the Bonnes-Mares were aged in 35% new oak): Deep, bright red-ruby. Brilliantly pure aromas of black raspberry, cherry and crushed limestone. Sharply chiseled, sappy and weightless in the mouth, with uncanny limestone cut to the flavors of raspberry, flowers and wild herbs. Spreads out insidiously to saturate and perfume the palate. Judging from this wine's tactile, bracing finish, endless perfume and firm tannic spine, it should gain in nuance for two or three decades in a cool cellar. WA 96-98 (12/2013): The 2012 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is initially mild-mannered on the nose, unassuming at first but unfolding with each swirl of the glass to reveal scent of dark cherries, Dorset plum, blueberry and licorice. But it is very contained like the Bonnes-Mares, the bouquet strongly advising to return in a decade’s time. The palate is very well balanced with filigree tannins, brambly red berry fruit and a marine-influence from start to finish – hints of brine and seaweed; shucked oyster shell on the finish. This is a very accomplished, fascinating Musigny from de Vogue. BH 94-97 (1/2014): A gorgeously spicy nose is comprised of liqueur-like dark berry fruit scents that also display plenty of floral influence that includes notes of lavender, violet and, somewhat curiously, honeysuckle. There is Outstanding concentration and punch to the seductively textured and marvelously intense big-bodied flavors that are borderline robust as the supporting tannins are dense but refined. I really like the Zen-like sense of harmony to the explosively long finish that really stains the palate. In a word, terrific. Drink 2027+. Don't miss! |
