| BH 91-93 (4/2019): A softly spiced nose grudgingly reveals wafting and perfumed aromas of plum liqueur, violet and a hint of sandalwood. The medium weight flavors are not quite as dense as those of the Frémiets but they're finer still with plenty of the hallmark minerality suffusing the classy and impeccably well-balanced finale. This Zen-like effort should be approachable after only 5 to 7 years of cellaring if that's your preference. |

WA 91 (1/2020): The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes is also showing beautifully, wafting from the glass with aromas of cassis, plums and cherries mingled with sweet soil tones, grilled meats and dark chocolate. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, broad and textural, with a velvety attack, lovely purity of fruit and a long, precise finish.
BH 89-91 (1/2019): Soft wood sets off the pretty and ultra-fresh aromas of dark currant, spice and distinct earth scents. The sleek and very rich medium weight flavors possess a caressing yet powerful mouthfeel, all wrapped in a saline-inflected finish that offers very fine depth and persistence. This should drink well young but have no problem rewarding mid-term cellaring. (Drink starting 2025)
VM 90-92 (1/2019): Matured in around 50% new oak, the 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes has (another) gorgeous and pure bouquet with small dark cherries, raspberry preserve and subtle violet notes. The new oak is seamlessly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with supple red and black fruit, lightly spiced with a slightly confit-like finish. Divine. Neal Martin. |

BH 90-92 (4/2019): A markedly spicy nose is again not super-fresh but neither are the aromas of plum, violet and Asian-tea dull. The middle weight flavors possess slightly better freshness than the nose while displaying lovely delineation on the stony and lightly austere finish where a hint of bitter cherry arises. (Drink starting 2029).
VM 89-91 (1/2019): The 2017 Echézeaux Grand Cru, from the lieu-dit of La Combe d’Orveau, just feels a little overdone on the nose, figs and dates suffusing the glossy red fruit. The palate is ripe and powerful. An intense Echézeaux, but lacking the grace and finesse that I have found in some of it peers. Maybe it will ameliorate with bottle age. (Drink between 2022-2036). WA 86-88 (1/2019): The 2017 Echézeaux Grand Cru offers up aromas of grilled meat, ripe fruit and dark chocolate, followed by a full-bodied, ample and fleshy palate that's somewhat figgy and firm. It's seemingly somewhat overripe in profile this year, though it may just have been out of sorts when I tasted it. |

VM 92 (2/2020): I very much enjoyed Thibaud Clerget’s 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Verseuil. It’s a lighter vintage for Clerget, so I was not surprised to see the wine showing so well. I especially admired the wine’s focus and delineation. Classic Volnay. Antonio Galloni.
BH 92 (4/2019): While the nose isn't quite as fresh as the best in the range, there is a lovely spiciness to the various dark berry fruit scents. The wonderfully refined, intense, stony and beautifully delineated middle weight flavors possess a lilting mouth feel while the balanced finish tightens up noticeably on the focused and relatively powerful finish. While this could be enjoyed after only 5 years or so, this will likely require 10 to 12 years to be at its best. |

| BH 90 (1/2020): This too is a very ripe wine in the context of the 2017 vintage with its lightly wooded nose of plum, spice, earth and forest floor. As usual, there is more power and mid-palate concentration to the sappy medium-bodied flavors that also exude a discreet minerality onto the more complex and slightly more structured finale. As it usually is, this is an excellent Gevrey villages and well worth your interest. |

There is good muscle, punch and power to the middle weight flavors that exude a fine bead of minerality on the beautifully persistent if youthfully austere and well-detailed finish. This is a blend of power and refinement as the supporting tannins are admirably fine-grained.
VM 92 (1/2020): The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Murgers 1er Cru offers dark cherry, black tea, sous-bois and traces of truffle on a nose that opens nicely with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit (cranberry and raspberry) and lightly spiced with orange peel and even hints of marmalade toward the firm, quite "serious" finish. Good potential. WA 92 (1/2020): The 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Murgers is open and demonstrative, bursting with aromas of cherries, red berries and plums mingled with savory notes of grilled game and raw cocoa. | BH 91-93 (4/2019): Here too the wood and menthol influences are anything but subtle though it detracts only mildly from the elegant, cool and admirably pure aromas of red and dark currant trimmed in a soft spice nuances. The equally round and succulent middle weight flavors are a bit less mineral-driven before culminating in a firm and serious finish that is shaped by relatively fine-grained tannins. This is a bit woody today but otherwise lovely. Drink 2029+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

The palate is medium-bodied, with supple tannin framing pure dark berry fruit laced with brown spice, tobacco and sage. The bouquet is nicely defined, offering perfumed dark cherry, cranberry and orange blossom aromas. The palate is crisp and well-defined on the entry with a fine bead of acidity, and quite linear and correct – toward the finish, I begin missing the sensuality and voluptuousness that I expect from this Premier Cru. BH 92-95 (1/2019): (from a .60 ha parcel in En Gemeaux.) An elegant, pure and ultra-fresh nose displays riper aromas of various red berries with plenty of spice, earth and lavender/lilac nuances. There is both excellent volume and mid-palate sappiness to the delicious and vibrant medium weight flavors that culminate in a youthfully austere, highly complex and impressively long finish. This is terrific but note well that it's going to require the better part of 20 years to reach its full maturity. Drink 2035+. Don't miss!

There are plenty of red cherries and cassis scents on the nose, which just needs a little more terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and slightly chalky. On the final third of this wine, the terroir belatedly comes through with clarity. Fine. Neal Martin.
BH 88-90 (1/2019): (from the 1er portion of Monts Luisants; an alouette is a lark.) A cooler and more restrained nose evidences notes of red currant, spice, floral and plenty of earth influence. The supple, round and reasonably precise middle weight flavors exude a hint of minerality that also adds a touch of lift to the dusty if slightly drying finish. There is more density and power but it's not immediately clear if the finish will harmonize. Drink 2025+. |

VM 90-92 (1/2019): The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis Village Cuvee des Grives comes from just below the woods above the village. It has a clean, precise bouquet of pastille-like blackberry and bilberry fruit, tightly wound at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, quite focused and very well balanced. This is an unassuming but effective Morey Village with a wonderful saline finish. Superb. Neal Martin.
BH 88-91 (1/2019): (from vines replanted in 2005 in the villages portion of Monts Luisants.) An equally fresh is somewhat more deeply pitched aromas consist of dark cherry, raspberry and whispers of violet and newly turned earth. The attractively vibrant medium weight flavors possess an almost creamy mid-palate along with a hint of minerality that adds a bit of lift to the delicious, balanced and refreshing finale. BH 97 (1/2020): (2.55 ha; 100% new wood.) Discreet wood is present on the ultra-fresh and incredibly spicy though even more restrained nose that reflects notes of red berries, the sauvage, earth, floral and exotic tea wisps. The gorgeous mouthfeel of the imposingly constituted and admirably concentrated flavors is one of contrasts as the mid-palate is quite supple yet the powerful, driving, austere and muscular finish is robust, serious and austere. This almost painfully intense wine is jaw droppingly good and somewhat curiously relative to how the Chambertin and the Clos de Bèze typically show at this stage, the Chambertin is the flashier of the two. We'll see in time though as it's usually the Chambertin that goes into a shell only to emerge 20+ years later. Be that as it may, today this is a genuine 'wow' wine. Drink 2037+.
WA 96-98 (1/2019): The king of the cellar is the 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru, a beautiful wine that offers up aromas of sweet cherries, wild berries, raw cocoa, warm spices and candied peel, complemented by ineffable savory nuances and a classy top note of peony. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and vibrant with juicy acids and a deep core of vibrant fruit that largely cloaks its fine structuring tannins. The Clos de Bèze may be richer and heartier, but the Chambertin is finer, longer and more complete.
VM 96-98 (1/2019): The 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru has an extraordinarily detailed and intense bouquet with a cornucopia of vibrant red cherries, crushed strawberry, cranberry and stony aromas, the latter becoming more and more intense with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with impressive body and depth. It is beautifully balanced with svelte tannin, velvety smooth with ample red fruit and spicy finish that lingers for 60 seconds in the mouth. Noble and aristocratic - just as Chambertin ought to be. VM 92-94 (1/2019): The 2017 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a not dissimilar bouquet to the Les Amoureuses, though here there is slightly more red fruit and perhaps a heightened sense of Pinote. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly grippy tannin, good backbone (as usual) and a saline influence that becomes more accentuated toward the fresh finish. This feels a little tight-lipped at the moment compared to others tasted from barrel, but it also feels persistent and, for want of a better word, enigmatic. Neal Martin.
BH 91-94 (1/2019): (from a 2.67 ha parcel situated entirely in terres rouges soil in the south-west portion of the vineyard.) A very ripe yet agreeably fresh nose reflects notes of blue berry, plum liqueur and violet that are cut with spice and earth hints. The exceptionally rich and impressively full-bodied flavors evidence a taut muscularity, all wrapped in an overtly powerful and lingering finish that is naturally sweet. As one would reasonably expect this is quite firm but the 2017 version appears to be a bit less structured than it usually is. Drink 2029+. |

VM 94-96 (1/2019): The 2017 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru has a very expressive, complex bouquet, the melange of red, blue and black fruit making it difficult to identify a single dominant color. Blueberry, wild strawberry and black currant intermingle, and hints of sea spray and touches of orange blossom develop with time. The harmonious, silky palate is almost like a Romanee-Saint-Vivant in texture, offering great depth and an energetic, peppery finish that lingers long in the mouth. A divine Musigny that will deserve some bottle age. Neal Martin.
BH 93-96 (1/2019): (from an incredible 6.46 ha parcel, which doesn't include the .67 ha section planted to chardonnay.) An openly exotic nose offers glimpses of black cherry liqueur, ginger, Asian-style tea, sandalwood and orange peel. The tighter and much more mineral-driven big-bodied flavors also possess evident muscle on the powerful and dense yet beautifully refined finish that goes on and on. This is also a bit less structured though with that said, this is going to need at least 15 years to reach its apogee. In a word, terrific. Drink 2032+. Don't miss! |
